“I do not understand,” Aliez frowned as he stared up at the large photograph of what he assumed was supposed to be an attractive female specimen of the human species. “Why would anyone advertise that they have a secret? Is that part of the appeal? Do you think she is a senshi? She has wings,” he pointed out to Vyn, staring very hard at the woman. There were others, of course. “Are they all Senshi?” He didn’t realize that there were people around them, watching the two young men as they stared hard at the photos in front of them. Aliez turned his head this way and that, and then lifted up his wrist so he could use the camera on his ComTech, just in case it was important to show the Commodore. “Maybe King Caedus would know this person if they are important here,” he explained his reasoning to Vyn beside him.

Vyn stared with his head tipped to the side. Perhaps, if they learned more about Victoria and her secret, they would understand why what appeared to be middle aged mothers and their adolescent daughters seemed to flock to her clothing. “They cannot all be named Victoria,” he said, looking from one large picture to the next, each appearing to show a different person; unless it was the same person wearing different faces, but Vyn did not think Earth had such technology. Unless that was the secret? Did this Victoria peddle in rare Earthen technology and conceal her activities by pretending to be a purveyor of clothing? “That deep veridian would suit you,” Vyn pointed to a display at the front of the store, “but I do not think this attire is practical.”

Aliez’s attention shifted from the woman with the wings and her strange attire, to the veridian piece of fabric on display. “I agree that color is appealing,” he said, curiously approaching the articles. There were many strange articles of clothing in that store, and many humans were around, picking out what he could only assume they liked the most. “This is softer than I expected,” he said to Vyn as he picked up the silky piece of triangular clothing and felt it between his fingers. And because he couldn’t recall feeling something like that before, he held it up to his cheek to feel it there as well. “Do you think the Commodore would like a gift from this place? He has been working very hard. I think that turquoise brings out his eyes,” Aliez nodded to the rack with another type of attire.

Some of the Earthlings were staring. One of them cringed when Aliez put the cloth to his face. Others muttered and scurried away. Vyn would have liked to peruse Victoria’s wares a bit longer, but he got the impression that he and Aliez were making themselves stand out too much. Despite the glamours they both wore, they were drawing attention when they were supposed to be discrete. When a woman dressed head to toe in black threw a glare in their direction, Vyn grabbed Aliez by the arm and tugged him away. “We may not be welcome here,” he said, directing Aliez back out into the open area where Earthlings walked to and fro. They were in a place called “the mall” and there were storefronts in every direction. Certainly, Earth was full of wondrous places, even if the people often left something to be desired.

“How can you tell?” Aliez blinked in confusion, the silky piece of fabric still in his hand as he let Vyn pull him away. He frowned at the piece of fabric because he really did like the color, but it had one of those tag things that seemed to indicate that currency was supposed to be exchanged for it. They would just need to find another place to use their Earth currency. They were still inside the building, so it was okay, right? They had to have a place before leaving to make purchases, a concept that was completely foreign to him. “What is that fragrant smell,” he asked when they were several store fronts away from the place where Victoria kept her secrets. In the window of another store were clear cylinders with colorful plastic or wax inside. “That smells delicious. Are they portable food sources?” he wondered, because there were pictures of what looked like Earthen fruits and other things on the labels.

Vyn approached the next store with an equal amount of curiosity. The mix of aromas drifting from it was pungent. The closer they drew, the stronger the smell, until it was almost headache inducing. But they must learn and explore. It might be important to understand such things, even if it didn’t seem important at the moment. Vyn drifted into the fragrant store and began to look amongst its wares. Some of the waxy substance was stored in clear jars with tight lids. Some of it was stored in canisters with lids that were easy to pull off. Others were merely wrapped in some sort of clear film. Vyn wondered if each type of container denoted which was more valuable, or if it was merely an aesthetic choice. Aesthetics seemed to be important to the Earthlings. Vyn picked up one of the canisters and pulled the lid off, getting a stronger whiff of the substance inside. It certainly smelled appetizing. Was it food? Against his better judgment, Vyn licked it. Hastily, he set it back down. “It’s fragrant smell does not correspond with a palatable taste.”

Aliez held the silky, colorful piece of fabric from the previous store in his hand as he followed Vyn into the waxy food store. The aromas together did make it somewhat dizzying, but he was too curious not to follow Vyn’s lead and he picked up one of the colorful waxy canisters so he could also try to lick one. “You are correct. That does not taste pleasant at all,” Aliez picked up another to look at the colorful picture on the front, unsure what the advertising had to do with anything. It was a picture of the Earth’s moon in a dark setting. “Surely this is not supposed to taste like their moon, do you think? And I am unsure what this hard piece is,” he indicated to the wick, but carefully set it down, since as Vyn observed, it was not likely supposed to taste as the pictures show, or how they smelled. But for some reason there were humans staring at them once more. Did they not have good enough disguises? One of them audibly announced their displeasure, and their face was wrinkled with disgust. “Perhaps we should look elsewhere,” he suggested to Vyn and quickly moved once more towards the exit.

One of the Earthlings muttered something about teenagers. Vyn did not understand the bitterness and resentment in their voice, or the disgust in their eyes, but he had nothing against making a hasty retreat. As they scurried out, Vyn still held the canister with the colorful vax inside. He would return it to its proper place once the unfriendly Earthlings had dispersed from the store, or perhaps he would purchase it before leaving, so as to study it later. “These people are strange,” Vyn muttered as he and Aliez began to wander again. In their short time here so far, Vyn had come to this conclusion: he liked Earth, but not its people.

Earth was definitely a strange place, but it was not without its charm. In fact, they found a lot of charms shortly after leaving the strangely pungent store. Aliez stopped and looked in the window, pointing to some of the flowery accessories some of the human youth were trying out in their hair. “I do not understand the purpose of additional ears of… I believe they call it a cat… but I find the color and texture appearance appealing,” he said, wondering if Vyn would also be curious about this sparkly looking store that seemed to be filled with different things to wear, all made by someone named Claire, if his translator was reading the sign correctly.

Vyn stared into the next store and wondered if they should leave. The Earthlings were strange people who looked at he and Aliez as if they were strange people, even though they both wore their glamours to fit in. Either they did not know how to behave appropriately in order to pass as Earthlings (but how hard could that really be?), or Earth was not home to friendly people. Given that even the Commodore had a difficult time winning some of them over, Vyn chose to assume the latter. But some of the wares sold in the store owned by Claire called out to him. There were all sorts of trinkets and knick knacks, some which Vyn could not predict the purpose of. Many of them gleamed and glittered in the light. Others sported ribbons and flowers. Flowers. Vyn drifted over to a display which bore dozens of flower crowns. He touched them with gentle, reverent fingers, and found that the flowers were not real flowers at all, but imitation flowers. Was that not better? With flowers like these, he would not have to waste natural resources, and the crowns he made for his friends would never die. “This would be lovely on Fae-Fae…”

“That would look lovely on Fae-Fae. You should obtain it for her,” he suggested, although it seemed as though Vyn already had that same idea. What interested Aliez was all the trinkets that were supposed to decorate ears. The humans must have been fascinated with ears. They had fake animal ears, and decorative things for their ears, and -- “Look, these look like they are meant to be Velencian,” Aliez pointed out to the obviously fake ear that humans could put on theirs to make them pointy. He didn’t understand why they would have something like that. He hadn’t heard of any other humans with Velencian ears, and yet they were being sold in this strange store by a human named Claire. “We should try to purchase an item for the Commodore as well. Something that would match this,” he suggested, holding up the piece of fabric he was still carrying from the first store.

Vyn removed the flower crown from its display. He would purchase it as soon as they found the best place to exchange their Earthen currency for it. In Claire’s shop as in all the others they’d seen, there were people gathered around some sort of device, passing objects over a counter before having them returned to them in bags. Perhaps that was when the exchange of currency happened? But there were so many people. They should find one of those devices elsewhere, where there were less people to observe them as they fumbled their way through the unfamiliar exchange. Searching for an item to present to the Commodore was no easy task. What would he find most appealing about Earth? What would best convey Vyn’s appreciation, his devotion? There were so many items to choose from. He wasn’t even sure what all of them were meant for. In the midst of wandering the store with Aliez, a portly Earthling came upon them, putting himself directly in their path so that they were forced to come to a stop. He wore a frown with his rather severe and official looking attire. “Apologies,” Vyn said, and moved like he meant to scurry out of the way. The brooding Earthling man stopped him. “I’m going to need you kids to come with me.”
