Set after this

Cybele took the younger girl's hand in hers. She thought of Earth, because getting away from space was one of the things she apparently instinctively remembered how to do.

There was the strange dizzying feeling of everything shifting around them, and then they found themselves in the park where Cybele had begun her evening. This one seemed more set up for athletics than for general family fun. There were tennis courts and a few basketball hoops to one side, and a surprisingly nice soccer field off on the other end. All that open space didn't leave too many places for youma to hide, but it had still seemed worth checking before everything else had happened.

Now, Cybele coughed a few times, her body retching against the last of the cursed, rot-infused mist that had found its way into her lungs. She took a breath of fresh air after that, and rubbed at her shoulder.

It was easier to think about her wounds than about the girl who had been grinning at her throughout the entire fight, clearly expecting some kind of response in return. It was worse because Cybele could tell that there should be something there. Fighting by her side had felt so natural, as had her magic, and yet now that they were here out of danger and Cybele could get a proper look at her face, it did not look any different than the face of any other stranger.

She sighed deeply. There was no use drawing this out any longer.

"I'm sorry," she said, her voice taking on that detached, matter of fact tone even as she tried to sound gentle. "A lot has happened, and I've lost almost all of my memories."

She released her hand and took half a step back. "What's your name?"

Anser felt all the energy of the battle leave her body once her feet landed on solid ground. She had taken a bit of a beating on Aokigahara's wonder, and unfortunately, now she could feel a bit of the aches and pains. While Cybele rubbed her shoulder, Anser did a few basic stretches to alleviate some of the tension in her body and hopefully get some of that built-up lactic acid moving. Might help with some of the stiffness--

When Cybele sighed, Anser straightened out from her stretching and glanced downward at her. Sorry. What was she sorry for--

A lot has happened, and I've lost almost all of my memories.

Anser felt like someone had just punched her in the gut.

What's your name?

It was then that some of the other pieces started to fall into place. You're stronger too! Anser and Cybele had never been on the same stage at the same time. Cybele had been a super, and then was an eternal, with white wings bursting from her lower back like her brother. Anser had been basic and then became super.

Now Cybele felt like she was at super rank all over again.

"s**t," she murmured, her voice thin and airy, eyes glancing over Cybele. Something was wrong. Something was deeply, deeply wrong.

"I-I should have known. We were never--," she gestured between the two of them, gestured low at their skirts to implicate their stages. Anser swallowed hard, swallowed around the way her emotions attempted to flood her. "Super Sailor Anser of Geese. Civilian name, Raina Araya."

All of the cheer left Anser's face and voice at once. Now she was the one staring and looking confused. Cybele bit her lower lip. It felt as though someone was poking sharpened bits of ice into her chest, and the worst part of it was that she could only guess at why.

All she knew was that she did not want to upset this girl.

"I get bits and pieces back, sometimes," she said, finally managing to get some softness into her voice. "Almost never something as concrete as a name. It's more," she waved a hand in front of her, "Feelings, I suppose."

There were park benches lined up along the sides of the tennis courts, and she slipped over to one of them now, taking a seat. In movies, they always asked people to sit down before they gave bad news. She wasn't sure how much it would help now, but it seemed worth a try.

"I remember that I liked you," she said, giving a small smile. "So it's nice to see you, Anser of Geese."

She saw where the other senshi's gaze had lingered and she reached down to brush her hips with her own fingertips, where the wings should have been. Their absence was still obvious every time she powered up.

"Oh, the downgrade?" she murmured, smile fading quickly as she thought about the things she still had to tell. "Best we can tell, it's from all the trauma that my starseed has been through."

There were only so many things Anser knew of that could cause a memory erasure of that caliber.

When she had become a senshi and, specifically, when her brother had found out, she quickly learned from him the concept of corruption. That switching sides was possible, and often, possible whether there was a desire to switch sides or not. It usually came with some loss of self. Encke hadn't much experience with anyone who had suffered that at the time, though he had met people who had been corrupted, in general...

Perhaps Cybele wasn't sure how much it would help at this point, but Anser sat down on the bench, anyway. "It's nice to see you too, Cybele," came Anser's reply, though it was quieter and more distant than she had been even five minutes prior. Was that what happened? It seemed to fit, seemed to fit with the concept of trauma to the starseed.

"God," murmured Anser, moving her ponytail over her shoulder and starting to fiddle with it in an attempt to calm the way she felt her heartbeat ratcheting up. "You said trauma. What," she could hardly bring herself to say it, and adding to the feeling of getting socked in the gut came with a sensation that something was in her throat and making it impossible for her to speak or breathe. She clawed around it. "What happened?"

The Cybele she knew was gone, maybe. Buried underneath starseed trauma. Buried underneath what happened.

Buried underneath--

"Corruption."

Cybele folded her hands in her lap and kept her eyes there, too, not sure if she would be able to keep talking about all of this if she saw the way that the other senshi's gaze had gone from bright to distant and strained.

Of course these things came up in conversation, and often. The purification was still fairly fresh, and her time in the Negaverse was the only thing from before that she was able to remember. When she talked about it all, though, she preferred to gloss over those eight months and focus on the happy ending. Her friends had coaxed her back. They'd shown her that there was so much more to her than being a broken tool of the Negaverse.

Everything was fine.

Except to Anser, who had known her before, when she was a full person with memories and a life that wasn't cobbled together, back when she was an Order Eternal, the truth had to be obvious. She was still broken.

"I was scouted for being an Order leader and a fierce fighter. I was ambushed at my own training event, from what I hear. I woke up in a General King's office with no memories." Her voice was flat, and she ran a thumb across the hem of her skirt.

"My time in the Negaverse feels distant, like a nightmare, but I know it was me doing those things. I was groomed. It took time for my friends to break through and help me purify, and that came with its own price."

She waved a hand over her outfit, at the smaller antlers and the lack of wings and everything else that had changed. "My memories are still gone, and now my power is, too."

Corruption.

She had suspected it, but the words were another punch in the gut nevertheless. It felt like she had attempted to swallow something nauseating and failed, it felt like she wanted to claw at her throat and let it escape and maybe wake up and Cybele would be fine and this whole conversation had never happened. Eternal Sailor Cybele, senshi of the Hunt, stolen by the Negaverse, wiped and forced to behave in the ways the Negaverse desired.

The smaller antlers, the lack of wings, the fact that their power felt so very much the same -- even if it was mildly different due to her continued presence as a chibi. It bothered her, that she hadn't quite figured out how to get that lock off her power yet.

Irrelevant, though.

"I imagine that'd be a nightmare," Anser couldn't even imagine, honestly. Being told about corruption and seeing the results of corruption were entirely and completely different. The effects had sounded awful. The effects were clearly awful. "You did so much good for all of us -- gathering us, allowing us to train together, and -- we were friends, too. Worked together a lot. I,"

Anser fiddled with her hair faster. She felt a few pieces coming out of it and into her hands. She flicked them aside.

"Can you get the power back? I have a feeling the memories are lost to you forever," the memories of them were lost, too, "but--"

There was a note of something else beginning to boil in her gut, hot and tight and burning.

Anger.

Cybele nodded slowly, gaze still carefully set forwards.

"It was awful in a lot of ways," she whispered. It wasn't something she talked about much. It wasn't something she thought about, if she could find something else to distract herself with. She was so, so ready to move on.

She hadn't moved on. Not yet. It had only been a few months. The nightmare still haunted her spare moments, and deep down she knew it would take work if it would ever get to the point where it did not haunt her dreams.

Although as she spared Anser a sideways glance only to see the teenager pulling out her own hair, Cybele knew that now was not the time to delve too deeply into all that.

"Oh," said Cybele, even softer, "Please don't." Perhaps the park bench hadn't been such a good idea, after all. "We can walk or something, if you need to move."

She stood. "The Princess who helped me said my power would recover in time, but I'm not sure if she was certain about it. There's only so many people who come back from corruption to ask about it."

She was one of the lucky ones, even if it didn't always feel that way to her or her friends. Instead of fidgeting with her own hair or clothes, she shifted slightly from foot to foot.

"I did actually regain one memory. It's possible I'll get more here and there, but for the most part I have to rely on other people to tell me about my own past. One of my friends calls it remembering for me." She almost smiled at the thought, although not quite, not with Anser still so clearly upset.

"Do you want to talk about it? About the things we did together?"

Cybele was still trying to figure out exactly how much of the forgotten person she'd been before counted as her, now, but it was certainly easier to hear the stories now that she was back on this side of things.

Having her hair tugging and fiddling and pulling pointed out made her freckles stand out a bit stronger against paler skin, and she quickly tried to find some other way to fidget. With her fingers, maybe, in her lap, twisting over and between each other and crackling as she pulled on the knuckles--

"Walking's good," Anser decided, standing back up and bouncing in an attempt to dispel the sensations she felt running through the entirety of her body. Didn't have a clear head. Didn't know what to think of this. Didn't know what to do-- "Or standing. You're right. Just need to move."

The Princess. Anser didn't really know of any princesses, though she knew the possibility of royal senshi existed. She had never met any of them face-to-face, and, honestly, wasn't sure what she would do if she did. Unlike the Negaverse and their general-royals, the senshi weren't beholden to the princesses. At least, that was what she understood. "Right, right. Suppose it's lucky I'm talking to you at all." She squeezed her arm with her opposing hand. "And that you're back here, in white, even if you're... downgraded."

Anser didn't like the way that word sounded.

"Still an upgrade from being in the Negaverse."

The Negaverse. The Negaverse stole her. Stole Cybele and all her memories and all her being and tried to make her into a servant for their purposes. It made her blood boil. Her fingernails started to dig into her arm until she suddenly let go and instead swung her arms back and forth.

"We met when I was still young. Like, thirteen." She wasn't sure how much older sixteen counted as, but she wouldn't reinforce it. "Was kinda super into the superhero thing then. You wanted me to maybe be a little less reckless but I think you liked my enthusiasm. Met over a bird youma. Think I called it ugly." Anser snickered, even as she clenched and unclenched her fists again. "We started working together. Going on patrols together. Seeing how our powers worked. And how they worked in combination, too. Together we could be," she snickered again, "very speedy."

Anser seemed antsy, bouncing again before pacing a small bit ahead.

"Anything is an upgrade from being in the Negaverse," said Cybele, her voice taking on that odd, flat tone again.

It would have been an upgrade to leave even if she hadn't made it out alive. That was something she knew too well, and something she tried to cling to when her weakness grated on her. It was luckier than Anser knew that she was standing here with what power she did have.

Although again, that was not something to delve too deep into.

Cybele was no longer looking away. She was watching Anser closely, now, her eyebrows slowly edging nearer and nearer to each other in concern as Anser quickly shifted from one nearly-violent gesture to the next. Of course she hadn't been sure what kind of reaction to expect, but she knew it hadn't been this.

How did you calm someone down, again? Her family mostly did spa days or movie nights when the feelings started to catch up with her, but it wasn't as if she had a face mask in her pocket that she could offer.

"I could see us being a good team. I don't even have to imagine that," she managed after a moment, offering a careful smile. "We did well together against that skeleton."

She followed quickly as the girl bounded ahead, not wanting to let her out of sight. "Would you like to try something like that now? Being speedy? I have some magic left. It's been a long night, and I could use something to clear my head." She whispered her Super attack, and the ethereal bow formed in her hands, although she kept it there for now, waiting for the other senshi's answer.

When the spa days didn't help, sometimes the moments of clarity that her magic offered made all the difference.

Anser was grateful that Cybele just followed her. She was willing to pace back and forth in general, but perhaps walking forward and not pacing would help clear her head a bit better. Clear her head before she found the nearest Negaverse source and showed them just what she thought about their friend-stealing bullshit--

Trying to steal lives, steal entire people.

Again.

Ruining lives in this city.

Again.

For what? For what purpose?--

Anser buried it down under the concept of the two of them being a good team, and she nodded an almost overly-excited agreement as she squashed the anger and questioning down with the waves of grief and the waves of reunification. She raked her hand through her hair again. She stopped midway upon remembering what she was doing and that it seemed Cybele didn't like that. "We did. A lot has changed, but some things have still stayed the same, right?"

Like Cybele and Anser making a good pair.

The anxiety eased back as her uneasy wavering on upset expression wavered instead into a smile. "Yeah. Think I'd like that. We can go on a very short run." She snickered, lifting her hand.

"Mothers Geese!"

The familiar honk of the geese echoed around them, even as Anser felt it pull at the dregs of her magic, and she eagerly bounced to get running.

Anser’s question was so simple and genuine after everything else that they’d been talking about that it pained Cybele that she could not answer it.

She knew some things that had changed, the state of her memories and her starseed being the most obvious, but there might have been more that she was missing. The handful of stories and flashes of familiarity she felt from time to time only gave her so much of a baseline for what she’d been like before all this.

She certainly had no way to know if anything could stay the same.

“Let’s make some new memories,” was all she said. That was something she could offer to both of them. When she heard the honking of geese around them, she let her arrows fly from the string.

One of the nice things about the way that her magic reigned in her focus was that the past didn’t seem to matter so much anymore. There was no room to worry about the future, either.

All that existed was the present moment. All that existed was the ground under her feet, and the wind in her face as she began to jog, and then to sprint faster and faster, quicker than she’d even been able to go as an Eternal.

All that existed was the friend by her side.

The speed was its own rush. It was the the adrenaline of battle without the fear, and while Cybele still kept a slight eye on Anser, mostly she let herself relish the moment.

As she shot off the concrete at the end of the tennis court and onto the grass, she found herself laughing.

New memories.

It shouldn't have been necessary to start over with new memories, but at this point, at this juncture, Anser was willing to take what she could get. There was no reason for her to not embrace Cybele the second time around, even if there was now an increased reason for her to wish that the scourge of the Negaverse be wiped off the planet, wiped out of the universe, wiped out of the multiverse if some of those strange physics theories she read about truly existed.

It burned within her, and perhaps it made the run more satisfying.

She set off the moment she saw Cybele's arrows fly, and perhaps it wouldn't have any particular meaning to Cybele who couldn't remember, but Anser was sincerely fast. The combination of the speed awarded to her by her magic and her own natural, long-built speed had her launching to the grass quicker than she might have even realized.

But it felt good.

She ran until the magic wouldn't let her anymore, and kept running for even a bit after that.

It distracted her from the anger and her rage and her bafflement and her deep, unexplainable sadness and let it funnel into something else.

Her feet.

The pounding of her feet, her steps gliding over the surface.

It was bliss while it lasted. There was no room in her head for worry, and that was the best part of it, but on top of that, for the first time in a while, she felt powerful.

Even seeing Anser dash ahead of her did not ruin that.

She'd felt her bruises from the monster as she ran, but she'd pushed through for her friend and for that moment of sheer clarity with the wind in her face. As the magic faded, though, she slowed quickly and rubbed at her shoulder again.

Rubbing did not help much. It had hurt before, but pumping her arms inhumanly quickly, even for a short time, had made things worse. Now her shoulder complained loudly, and a heavy sort of ache spread farther down her arm. On top of that, the exhaustion of it all that she'd been pushing through was really catching up with her after that second use of her magic.

She still managed to smile at Anser, though, as she walked up behind her. "That was amazing," she said, and there was nothing false about her words, or the hint of excitement in her voice. "We are a good pair, aren't we? We should do this more often. Fight more, too."

Cybele was learning the value of having friends at her back, and Anser's magic did pair with hers perfectly.

Anser let out an airy breath as the two of them came to a stop. She could feel the effects of blasting through so much of her magic as she stood there, but did it matter? Her mind was blank for a few blissful moments, and for a few blissful moments more, she could pretend Cybele was Cybele and nothing had changed and everything was exactly the same as it was the last time they had run past each other.

Bitterly, she realized that explained why it had been so long since she had seen Cybele.

Bitterly, stubbornly, she buried that down.

"We are!" Anser swirled around with a grin, though that faltered as she watched the way Cybele rubbed her shoulder. Cybele seemed happy though, as happy as she was, and Anser was perfectly willing to encourage that. "Our magic meshes really well! We could be like The Flash, or something. Maybe Sonic?" She paused, and then fell into a fit of snickers.

"Sorry, even now, can't stop making nerdy references."

Would those even be familiar to Cybele if she had lost all of her memories?

... Best not to think about it.

"We should do this more often. Together," Anser cracked her knuckles, "we can take them all out."

No, Cybele did not have any idea what Anser was talking about with the nerdy references, but she didn't mention that. Bringing it up just felt like rubbing salt in a wound she hadn't intended to make in the first place.

She was trying to learn a bit more about culture, but it turned out that there was a lot of culture to learn about, and she'd been starting with the classics, or things in the theater world.

She made a mental note to look up The Flash and Sonic when she got home.

"All of them," agreed Cybele at first, before she went silent for a moment and looked off into the distance with half-lidded eyes. "There's a few who I'd like to see get out first, but I want Chaos gone."

This third chance that she'd gotten was a miracle that she didn't deserve, and a small part of her wanted to try to be like Ganymede and help to reach out to the next person. A bigger part of her knew that the reality was that there were many who would never accept the offer of help. The best hope for them was sending their starseeds back to the cauldron.

She took a breath, one that was shakier than the others now that her energy was fading and her true emotions were coming to the surface a bit more. "I don't want them doing what they did to me to anyone else."
