Vaani
Race: Yaeli Gender: Female Occupation: Apprentice Lens Crafter Significant Other: N/A Parents: Amira (NPC) x Valin (NPC) Sisters: Varshana, Laksha, Nakia, & Zahira Children: None Physical Description: Vaani has a pear shaped body with a little pudge around the middle.
3 Base Traits: Active, Naïve, Monophobic Personality: Vaani was raised in a very hands-on household and it shows. Laziness was never tolerated so she’s grown into the type of girl that is constantly on the move. Whether it’s taking up chores, tending to household repairs or her studies she’s constantly up to something. With a large family she’s grown rather used to taking lots of breaks to play outdoor games.
Due to her semi-isolated childhood Vaani developed a tender heart. Underneath the layers of suspicion is a willingness to believe in the good natured smiles of others and hope that those that treat her with kindness really are being kind. It’s led to a lifetime of bullying, but she can’t seem to break herself of it. At least when she’s being ‘asked’ to tend to someone else's chores or to do their work for them she’s being included.
Vaani is terrified of being on her own. As part of such a large family there aren’t many chances for her to be alone, but even when she is she hates it. There’s a comfort in being in a quiet room surrounded by others, even if no one is speaking, but once they’re gone her anxiety takes over. Shadows become monsters, her thoughts are spirits coming to claim her and every little sound is evil. So, despite her general mistrust of people as a whole, she would still prefer to be on the fringes of society than a complete outcast.
Interesting Facts -Her unique eyes are not a trait of hybridity, but rather the after effects of a potion!

History Valin and Amira fell into each other’s arms early in life. The pair were nearly inseparable from the moment they saw one another and as soon as they were able to they solidified their union by getting married. Valin was a scholar, one who adored collecting as much information about the new world as possible and the two traveled for years. During that time neither made any efforts to prevent the start of a family and even hoped for it! They wanted nothing more than to share their love with a little one, or three!, but as time passed their dream seemed to slip away.
Months turned into years and years turned into a decade. Soon enough their youth was slipping away without any sign of a baby. The pair saw healer after healer, witch doctors and priests, all across Tendaji for help. Amira drank a plethora of teas to help with fertility, and they tried every trick they could think of with no success. At long last they saw an older Oban woman who claimed to have just the cure.
”Drink this every night for a year and on the last night you will conceive.”
Valin didn’t believe it would work, but Amira was desperate. As ready as her husband was to simply give up, Amira held strong. She drank the miserable concoction every night, making it a part of her nightly routine and soon found her nerves slipping away. Valin suspected the roots that were supposed to ‘aid in fertility’ were simply a drug to help with her nerves, but Amira wouldn’t hear it. She believed it worked so he kept his peace.
And sure enough a year later Amira was with child.
To ensure a safe pregnancy the pair moved back home to Yael. When Amira’s stomach began to grow round the pair were understandably excited, but ultimately cautious. The sheer size of it was daunting. Surely she shouldn’t be that big this early on? When seeking out a healer the best the healer could say was that all was healthy and good, but that there were multiple aura’s coming from within her. Suspecting twins, the happy couple settled into their new routine.
They prepped for two infants, but when Amira went into labor early they soon learned the truth.
That night, under the light of a New Moon, Amira gave birth to five tiny daughters.
Amira’s mother, who had been present at the birth, panicked. Seeing it as an ill omen she ran to get the closest priest while the new parents simply tried to process it all. Five daughters?! After so long they couldn’t believe their eyes. The midwife assured them that not all five would survive; how could they? With as small as they were? All five seemed sickly, practically near dead already, but the parents wouldn’t believe it. The priest saw it as an ill omen, given the moon outside and the sheer number of children, but Amira saw it as a blessing.
And the girls thrived. It was a hard road, one filled with much heart ache and sickness, sleepless nights and spiked emotions, but they grew. Their tiny village, however, prayed for their end. To be born on a moonless night...What could they be if not ill omens? The identical girls were spat at as they passed, had salts and dried herbs tossed at them, and were outright yelled at if they came close to a building. Valin, sick of it all, did his best to help his daughters but one man could hardly fight back against societal pressures. As much as Yael was changing over the years due to outside influence the superstitions still reigned and it left its mark.

Prentice Solo 1 Valin and Amira were merchants by trade. They were always an adventurous duo before the birth of their daughters and only the ‘curse’ placed upon them had held the couple back. Over time Amira saw more truth in the words of the people around her whereas Valin simply wanted out. He didn’t want his daughter’s growing up under the shadows of horrid lies and bad tidings. The New Moon had blessed them with a healthy brood so why not just be happy with it and move on?
Each of their five daughters had their own separate hobbies, agendas, and areas of success. Vaani watched as their talents grew, as isolated as they were, and eventually her sisters started trying to branch out a little more. One day Varshana left for Pajore to become a dress maker. She’d always shown a unique eye for fashion that Vaani could never understand, but Varshana just seemed to thrive under. She promised to make sure that Vaani was always dressed in the best of trends and that as soon as word came of new silks from Oba she would be sure to save some back for her.
Laksha was much stronger and thus her force of will carried her much further. She’d taken an apprenticeship upon a ship bound for Oba. As much as her father had praised her for taking charge of her life, Vaani worried for their mother. Amira was just…so sullen after Laksha left and honestly, so was Vaani. Already she was down two sisters and the thought of losing the others caused her heart to clench. Why couldn’t they all find their paths in life together? Surely there was something they could all get involved in that would keep them around!
A few weeks later Zahira announced she planned on marrying a young man from the south end of the island as soon as they were of age. She didn’t want to work – why should she? He was rich! – and Vaani just…felt herself crack. They would all be turning eighteen within a few weeks so the whole house was in a rush trying to prepare a modestly decorative wedding and she didn’t want any part of it.
She’d even tried going to speak with Rawiri, but she’d been told that her friend was doing training with the other elaria. Everyone was moving on with their lives and she was just…stuck.
In all honesty Vaani had never once thought about what life would be like as an adult. She always assumed she, her sisters, and her parents would stay in their little cottage, tucked away from the world, for the rest of their lives. It was simpler there, without the eyes of the world on them, but each of her sisters swore that once they were out on their own things were different. So long as they weren’t around each other no one even knew about the curse and they could finally live their lives. She should have been happy, really she should have, but Vaani was terrified. Just because they pretended it didn’t exist didn’t mean it went away!
“…It’s a New Moon.” Startled, she turned to see Nakia sitting beside her by the windowsill. Her sisters hair was loose around her shoulders and hung in waves after being pinned back in a braid all day. “Mother said that the curse will either break or get stronger after our birthday.”
“…She told me that too.” It was horrific to think about. How could things get worse? They were already shunned in their village and if it extended into the capital then the entire priesthood might come after them. “Aren’t you afraid? You never seem worried about it.”
“If I said I was would it change anything?” Ah, and that…was so like Nakia to say. “We can’t just roll over and die, Vaani. Zahira’s making the best of it by trying to force something positive to happen and I’m...leaving for Zena as soon as the wedding is over.”
“You’re what?! Why?” Vaani reached over and grasped her sisters hand. “Why wouldn’t you tell anyone before now? The weddings in three days!”
“If I told someone then you would just try to stop me.” Nakia turned her hand just enough so that she could grip her sister’s hand in a comforting hold. “I’m going to Zidel to study magic. There’s a mage in Pajore who saw me and he wants me to come study with him . He has all the right credentials; this could be my shot at a better life.” Why was this happening? Now, of all times?! When it felt as if her heart was at it’s most fragile?! All four of her sisters – gone – in a matter of months! Maybe THAT was the curse. The fact that they would no longer be able to stay together as they had for eighteen years.
“What do you want me to say, Nakia?” Vaani murmured. When she lifted her gaze her eyes were full of tears. “That I’m happy for you? I’m not! I-I-I just…I don’t want you to go, okay? Can’t you study magic here? Yael has PLENTY of mages!”
“They do, but none that will take me because of who I am. I’m going Vaani; and that’s that.” With a calm finality, Nakia pulled her hand away and stood. For a moment she looked down at her sister with a cool, calculating gaze before leaving her entirely.
Under the light of the new moon Vaani slumped back into her seat and sobbed. She pulled a pillow up to her chest and buried her face lest she wake up the others. All her life she’d been yelled at, spit on, cursed at and all because she looked like THEM. She’d grown so attached to the safety that came with having her other sisters to shield her that the idea of suddenly being alone made her physically ill. She could never leave now. That was just it; Vaani would be stuck in this house for the rest of her life! All the time she’d spent with Rawiri, doing her best to break out of her shell…what good would it do? She wasn’t a fighter so if a few determined yaeli with stones decided to take her out just to be done with it…
Vaani clutched the pillow tighter and screamed.
Maybe it wasn’t too late! Maybe if she got to the others in time she could convince them to at least hold off for a year until they made better plans. Zahira could even move HERE with her husband, and Laksha could work on a farm! Maybe Eudom’s! So long as she stayed quiet he might not mind having her around, right? Nakia could study from books for a while and…and…and… It all sounded so STUPIDLY DESPERATE even to her own ears. What was she supposed to do without them? Who was Vaani, if not one of a quintuplet? She just…she just honestly had no idea anymore. The endless night seemed to swallow her whole as Vaani’s heart descended into despair. At the time she didn’t see an end to it at all, but maybe…maybe with time…there would be if only she were brave enough to look for it.

Affinity Solo - Lens Crafter Dear Nakia,
It’s been some time since you’ve left and I thought I would write to you. I’m sending this to your last known address and I hope that it finds you well. I’d like to start off by saying how sorry I am about the way things left off with us. In the weeks since you’ve been gone I’ve been able to think about it, and I know that at some point it was only natural for the five of us to split I just…didn’t want it to happen now. That sounds pretty childish, doesn’t it? The house is unbearably quiet without all of you in our room, but I won’t have to adjust for long.
I’ve taken on an apprenticeship in Pajore. It’s a big move to the capital and one that is as exciting as it is scary. I’ll miss the trees dearly, but I thin it’s for the best. If I stayed in this house – without you all – I think I may go mad. The way mother and father look at me is akin to pity and I don’t want that. I want them to be happy just like you are so it’s time for me to find my own path. I’ll be working under a Lens crafter to create spectacles! Isn’t that interesting? You remember Ovren, don’t you? Father’s old friend? His son was set to inherit his shop from him, but he unfortunately passed shortly before you left. Father sent me over to help mind the shop while they tended to business and when I showed some skill he offered to teach me. It’s a great honor and a profession that I think I could really do well at.
Besides, it would be nice to be sought after, don’t you think? I could make lens for my friends and family, to help people to see and that’s just as important as grand adventures. I was never one for sea faring, battles or grand romances like the rest of you, but by doing this I can help.
I hope it’s alright but I’ve taken one of your old pairs to use as practice. I’ve been studying the glass so that I can craft a new pair for you and maybe once you’re settled in Zena I could visit? If you’ll have me, that is. I miss you more than words can ever say and even if traveling that far is a little scary I wouldn’t mind it.
How are your studies? Were you able to meet up with your tutor? You’ve always been so determined that I know you’ll become a powerful sorcerous in no time at all. I’m sure everyone back home will be talking as soon as word spreads about your skills. Mother still worries about you being so far from home, but you should see the way father talks about you. He’s so happy that you were able to get away; almost like you broke your own curse all on your own!
Maybe one day I’ll have that kind of strength.
I’m going to include the address where I’ll be staying and the name of the shop you can reach me at. I’m sending some coin too so that you can buy whatever sort of supplies you need. Yaeli gold is just as good as Tendaji gold, isn’t it? I’m also sending a shawl I bought in the market yesterday. The colors reminded me of you and I don’t want you catching a chill in the mountains.
Take care of yourself and come back to us in one piece, alright?
Your loving sister, Vaani

Prentice Solo 2 Rawiri,
Greetings! It’s been so long since I’ve been able to talk to you that I decided to write. I hope that’s okay! The last time I stopped by your father told me you were in training with your mother and grandmother so I didn’t want to be a bother. What sort of training are you doing? I’m not as familiar with elarian culture, but I’d like to learn! Whatever you’re willing to tell me I’d be happy to hear.
I myself have been studying as an apprentice lens crafter in Pajore. It’s a long way from home, but I believe it will be worth it in the end. My master says I have an eye for detail and a great deal of patience which is apparently a good sign. You’ll have to visit sometime and let me design a new pair for you! Maybe a few if we really get carried away.
The most peculiar thing happened recently and that’s the real reason I’m writing to you. A man from Sauti was in the capital selling his wares. I stopped by to see what he had and I saw it was mainly magical herbs and potions. You know I don’t have a talent for magic so I kindly told him I wasn’t interested and tried to move on. He kept saying all these nice things about how pretty I was, how sweet I sounded…really, he was a very good salesman. Eventually I bought a vial of what I thought was an elixir to clear out my skin. He assured me it would make me as pretty as I wanted to be.
I drank it. Oh, it was so stupid of me! I should have just left it on the shelf! At first I felt nothing, but when I woke up the next morning I was transformed! My eyes…Oh, Rawiri my eyes have CHANGED. I’ve always loved the color of your mother’s eyes and Kahukura’s…It just looked like such a pretty seafoam color that the potion must have known! That’s the only thing that’s changed about me but what a change! I haven’t even shown my master yet. What’s he going to say? What’s he going to THINK?
Is it bad that I like the way they look, though? I can’t stop looking at myself in the mirror! It feels horribly vain but also…thrilling? Exciting? I’ve always felt so plain compared to you and my sisters, but now I just feel like it was right. I should have thought it through before doing it! But I don’t exactly regret it. I just wanted to write to you to tell you before we saw each other next. A part of me wanted to keep it a surprise, but I also don’t like hiding things from people. With my sisters gone I’ve been trying to write more and I’d like to do the same with you. Just because we’re working toward our futures doesn’t mean we have to drop off, does it?
I’m including the ingredients to some honey rolls and the recipe, for when you have time. I’m sorry I didn’t make them for you, but I wasn’t sure when you would get them and I didn’t want them to go bad. I’m also sending a necklace I found at the market – don’t worry, it wasn’t at that same stall! – but it was made by an alkidike crafter. She made beautiful pendants out of glass and the colors inside are supposed to represent Aisha. I thought it was pretty, and I hope you like it as well.
Please, don’t be a stranger! When you have a moment come visit me in Pajore. I’d love to show you around the city.
With love, Vaani

Prentice Solo 3 Nakia,
Why didn’t you ever tell us you were running away from your boyfriend? Do you have any idea how embarrassing it was to be chased down in the street by a man I didn’t know?! I was trying to run errands when I kept hearing your name over and over and over until I was nearly run over! He grabbed my shoulders and started crying because he hadn’t heard from you in weeks! I tried explaining to him that I wasn’t you – that my name was Vaani- but he wouldn’t listen! It wasn’t until my master came to break it up that he even calmed down!
No wonder you wanted to leave in such a hurry! He was such a wreck, Nakia. Honestly, you could have at least told him you didn’t want to be in a relationship anymore before ditching him. As far as he was concerned you were dead or something. He’d even gone to Pajore to ‘mourn’ you by praying at the Sanctum and then he was SURE he was seeing your spirit! It was awful! I wanted to crawl into a hole and die!
I’m sure you’re having a great big laugh reading this, but I want you to know that if he comes back I’m telling him where to find you. He seems the sort to go all the way to Zena to profess his love so don’t try me. How could you ever date someone like that? I thought you’d be a little pickier, but still! You should be ashamed for playing him like that. It’s bad enough that I have to deal with this from Varshana and Laksha, but now you! Yael isn’t even safe for me anymore. I’ll be hard pressed to find a partner that one of you hasn’t already dated.
Ever suspicious, Vaani

Prentice Growth Solo [Learning to live on your own for the first time is hard, especially for a quintuplet whose always clung to her sisters' sides! As strong as Vaani is trying to be there are still fears and the inevitable loneliness to contend with. So, to combat it all, she decides to get a pet. Having Biscuit around will help to give her a sense of purpose when she comes home, a reason to see some light in it, as well as someone to love and have that love reciprocated]
As much as she wanted to become an independent young woman Vaani was, admittedly, far too frightened to do that. The idea of living on her own was enough to put a chill in her blood and as much as she wanted to prove herself to her family she just…didn’t want to be on her own. She already missed being at home and she hadn’t even left yet!
Weeks turned into a month and soon enough Vaani was facing living on her own in the city. It was easy enough to forget the loneliness of a rented room when she was working. Being around her master helped distract the young yaeli and the constant hustle of the city gave her something to hear. When she came home, however….Vaani just couldn’t handle it. She would sob and was constantly heart sick over what she didn’t have. She needed someone there with her…but who? She couldn’t ask her sisters to come back or that her parents move to the city. This was her struggle and yet…what was she supposed to do?
Ovren noticed her struggles and a simple suggestion from an old man turned the tide. A pet; something to give her company and for her to care for. Honestly, at first she wanted to deny it’s practicality because she’d never owned a pet before, but…well, Vaani was willing to try.
She thought over all the creatures she’d seen over the years and none really called out to her. None, save for a perzi she’d seen in town. Vaani came across an Oban trader who happened to have a litter of perzi he was trying to find homes for. The little thing was cream in color with crystals that looked like the rising dawn. When Vaani lifted her from the crate the little perzi instinctively hissed and at first she almost put it back. However, the longer she held the creature the more it started to purr and Vaani just couldn’t turn away at that point. Biscuit, is what she called her, and from that moment on adjusting to life on her own was infinitely more tolerable. There was someone to talk to when she was home; someone to care for, to look after and to give as much love as she. While not entirely on her own Vaani was happy with the compromise.
She no longer spent as much time writing to family members or going out of her way to visit them in her down time. In the beginning Vaani had been convinced that she could do it all on her own because she was grown, but she’d severely overestimated her ability to acclimate. It was going to take time, but having Biscuit here with her would help. She got the perzi a sweet little ribbon to act as a collar and made sure to feed her only the best that she could afford. After all, if she didn’t have her sisters around to spoil anymore, why not spoil her precious pet? The little thing was sure to gain a few pounds, just like her mistress, but with as much as she was purring Vaani didn’t think she cared.
