(1/7) Mom was alive. That was, at least, what dad's most recent letter back to Zadia said. His sister had taken over most of his care now, and as more and more family members of victims came to bring their loved one's home, the news came that some of those who had stayed to help in the recovery were picking up and heading home themselves. Immediately, Isaia's thought went to Vaani.
He knew that this infatuation was mostly trauma bonding, and because of the pain meds he'd had shoveled into his face in those first few days. At least that's what his dad and sister pointed out. While they'd tolerated his clinginess to her on their first reunion, they'd soon started to wean him off both Vaani and the medicine; he'd seen her, from a distance, but hadn't really talked much since the tea they shared when his family first came.
At the time he'd been heartbroken and angry with his family, but now that his mind was more clear, and his pain was settling somewhat, he was horribly grateful. He still felt a draw to her, but logic returned enough that he was embarrassed at himself.
Isaia was up and about, with the aid of a cane Zadia had got for him, and while he still looked pale and drawn, he'd recovered enough to bathe regularly again and get dressed in fresher clothes. So, he went out in search of Vaani, telling himself it was to say goodbye in the off chance she was one of those leaving for home.

As much as her sister insisted that Vaani take off and do what she could to enjoy the remainder of her trip the Yaeli had remained with the rest of the volunteers. It hadn't felt right - seeing what she saw, hearing their cries and the exhaustion of the healers - to pack up her things for a 'fun little jaunt' around Matori. Maybe she would go another time - or maybe she wouldn't set foot on a ship ever again - and only the Gods could know. Still, Vaani couldn't say she'd hated every moment of the trip. The vast majority of it, certainly, but the sound of the ocean at night was soothing and she'd quite enjoyed a few of the locals.
Especially the half-crazed lunatic who saw this as a sign from his Gods that the world was ending and they should all bathe in fish bladders to defend themselves. It was...oddly like home, in some ways, and the comparison was a bit eerie.
She'd extended her stay to help with the recovery efforts, but now that so many of the others were returning to Belrea so, too, was she preparing to leave. Vaani had spent the better part of the morning packing up her meager belongings and picking up little shells on the seashore. So many of her things - poultices, wraps, knickknacks and clothing - had been given to the recovery effort so she didn't have much to fill her bag. It made it seem like this was a 'real' vacation and not the traumatic event so many had been forced to live through.
And speaking of traumatic...She'd wondered, off and on, about Isaia. Now that his family was here he didn't need an outsider coddling him, especially one he'd clung to while out of his mind, and visiting just seemed...strange. What would she even say to him? 'Goodbye, hope your leg gets better?'
In a weird way it felt almost wrong not to see him at least in passing, simply because she'd done so for so many days before they'd arrived. Maybe...maybe she should go and at least talk to him before they left? Or...no...no, she definitely shouldn't. With a pensive little pout, the plump little yaeli squatted down in the sand and gave a shell a little prod with her nail, only to squeal when it stood up.
The hermit crab clacked it's pincers a few times before scuttling away.

(2/7) Surprisingly, there were a small handful of Yaeli that had been on Vaani's ship and stayed to help, so it took a bit of searching to find her. But eventually, he was pointed in the direction of the braided young lady, and on seeing her any hopes that his infatuation had abated along with his sickened fever disappeared in a puff of smoke. Isaia knew nothing about her, except she was kind and patient enough to handle a feverish fool, apparently spiritual if her charm was anything to go by, and he thought she had sisters, although he couldn't remember where he'd learned such a thing. If she'd told him, he didn't remember the exact context.
He took a moment to primp his hair, relieved that he'd been able to get it cut back to its usual style (apparently, while healing your hair could grow quite fast, and he'd felt like a shaggy mess), then moved forward, stifling a grimace at the difficulty of maneuvering his stiff leg and cane over the sand.
As he got closer, peering to try and see what had caught her attention, he bit his lip to suppress a laugh when she jolted and gave an adorable little squeal, spotting the crab as it shuffled off. "Ah well. I'm sure we could find you some prettier shells as souvenirs than that one." He said brightly.

Vaani's neck warmed when she spotted Isaia. It was bad enough to be caught crying out over a little crab, but by him of all people. "You're here." There was no denying the warmth in her surprised tone anymore then she could hide the way her heart warmed. Despite herself, Vaani's glowing eyes crinkled as she gave an awkward sort of smile, then found her lips pursing as her flush grew. "I meant here - on the sand - with a cane-" She motioned toward it, as if he wasn't aware. "You should be on steadier ground. This can't be comfortable." What if he fell and stunted his healing? He might make his limp worse.
And still - now that he'd been properly bathed, dressed and given a hair cut - Vaani couldn't very well keep her eyes downcast. She wanted too - Gods knew she was trying - but he cut a very handsome figure and she...she just...
Spirits take me now.
"If you can point out some that aren't already taken I would be very grateful." She gave a little laugh.

(3/7) Was he imagining it, or was Vaani actually happy to see him? Isaia hoped so - but deep down he wondered if he was still just reading into it, the way he had when he'd been feverish. Still, she was smiling so he'd take it as a good sign. He followed where she gestured, leaning his weight onto his good leg so he could lift the cane to inspect it with faux surprise, giving it a hefty swing as one would a sword.
Then, he carefully set it down again, giving her a jovial wink. "Don't worry your pretty head about me, you've made sure I'm well on the way to recovery. The least I can do is come thank you for all your patience." He scrubbed his free hand against the newly shaved undercut at the back of his head, laughing a bit self deprecatingly.
Instead of continuing though, he hobbled a few paces away to peer along the sand for shells, as promised.

When he made to lift the cane Vaani couldn't stop herself from taking a half step forward, hands raised to catch him just incase he fell. As he swung the cane, though, she gave a softer sort of smile and lowered her hands. "You hardly needed to do that, but it's appreciated all the same. I only wish I'd been able to do more." If she'd been a healer then how many wounds could she have cleansed before they became infected? Before the bones had to be rebroken just so magic could properly fix them? At least with Isaia she'd been a comfort and that helped soothe some of the jagged edges of her nerves.
And - wait a tic, had he called her pretty? Ah, so he's a cad then. It made sense, she supposed. He'd been awfully sweet to her while he'd been out of his mind with delirium and now - well, when Isaia had no reason to be he was still being all too kind.
She very nearly asked about his mother, but stopped herself. Vaani hadn't seen the woman personally, though she knew they'd found her at least. So, instead....She shifted her feet and crouched once again to peruse the sand. "Have you, by chance, seen your sister recently? She seemed....changed." Which was the polite way, she supposed, of stating the obvious.
While she hadn't seen Isaia's mother she'd quite literally run into his sister and hadn't even recognized the woman. A pollen had come through the camp, something that had changed so many and Zadia - Well, would it help his recovery to see her or cause him more stress?

Oh bollocks, the very last thing Isaia wanted to do was antagonize her. He lowered his cane with a chagrined duck of his head, then shook it at her modest words. He could almost hear her floundering for something to say, and had to suppress a sigh. So, he really HAD been making her uncomfortable this whole time, hadn't he?
The two fell into a brief silence that Isaia wanted desperately to fill, despite the silent assignment of looking for shells - so when she spoke again he looked up excitedly.
"My mom's gonna have a heart attack when she sees her." He agreed with a shameless grin. His dad's letter had mentioned she was a bit confused, but Isaia forced himself not to think about it. Zadia was already so stressed about it, his go to method of making her feel better was to just insist she looked more like their dad now.
"Y'know, she dyed her hair that pink before - she's reallt got dad's hair, and it always made her look washed out but maybe it'll suit her--"
Isaia froze mid step, blinking, as his cane landed with a crunch in the sand. Looking down he didn't see anything, but...
Isaia's chest wrenched guiltily as he shuffled down to his good knee, brushing the sand away to reveal a previously buried shell - which, until his clumsy steps, had been large and perfectly pristine.
Now, it was split nearly in half, with delicate pieces crumpled at the center where he'd crushed it with his cane.

"Don't say that." Despite her words there was light hearted humor in Vaani's tone. "You'll make it true." She sifted through the sand with a distracted eye and forced herself to take the task more seriously. There were cracked shells a plenty; bits and pieces, broken against ships and the stones on the shore, no doubt. Finding anything whole was proving to be a challenge.
"It was a dye? Seriously?" Vaani's eyes widened. "I've never seen a color that bright before." Giving a surprised 'hmmn' the Yaeli hazarded turning her gaze toward Isaia, only to find looking back down suddenly far more important.
Her anxious haze lasted all of a minute, which was apparently all the time Isaia needed to crack the one pure shell they'd managed to come across. At first she didn't pay it much mind, as her gaze was still turned away, but when she saw him bending out of the corner of her eye Vaani turned, only to let out an pained groan. She hadn't meant for it to slip out, but she made no move to cover it either.

Isaia couldn't explain the strange surge of humiliated frustration that shot through him as he gingerly picked the pieces of the shell out of the sand. It was... or... had been... a beautiful shell. It reminded him of the mussels he was used to slurping out of on shore leave, only instead of the dull coloring the outside was a coal black - but the inside was a gorgeous, iridescent blue.
It would have been a prize, if he had never shown up and Vaani managed to find it on her own. Now, it broke jaggedly - ruining the pearlescence of the inside.
What was worse, Vaani noticed and a sound of loss left her that made his stomach twist in disappointment. 'Maybe she never would have found it? It was buried in the sand, after all--' he thought, desperately, but he knew it was a weak defense at best.
"I ... ah. Found one?" He tried, holding the shell in his palm as he hobbled his way to her. His cheeks felt ruddy with embarassment, but he fought to keep the smile on his face. "Sorry, love, I should've listened to you before. About the cane..."

"It's alright. I can hardly blame you for something you didn't know would happen." She moved to stand and brushed sandy palms off on her generous thighs before walking to close the distance between them. Now that he was standing so close it was impossible not to notice just how much taller he was than her, but that's not what she was looking at.
The shell was a concern, of course, but his face....She couldn't help but to reach out with both of her hands; one to cup his hand from below and the other to pat his arm, just above the elbow. "Isaia, it's fine. Really. Besides, I wasn't worried about broken shells; I was worried about you."
It was still a shame, given just how gorgeous the shell could have been, but that didn't stop Vaani from offering him a soft smile. When she pulled back she took a broken piece in each hand. When she raised them, it was to catch the light so both could see. "I think it's still pretty amazing. And now it's just easier to carry."
And after a thoughtful pause, she laid one of the pieces back into his hand. "A piece for you and a piece for me."
Why did he call me love? Is that normal in Belrea? Should I be concerned or-?

(6/7) Ugh, Isaia wasn't used to caring so much what a potential love interest thought of him. If he didn't leave a good impression, he could just shrug a shoulder and try with the next pretty thing that flit through his vision. He knew, thanks to his sister's careful chiding and his own self reflection, that this infatuation with Vaani started as a distraction - the focus was unfair and likely a put off to her.
And yet - even sober and recovered somewhat, Isaia found it hard not to seek her approval and attention. And he couldn't really blame himself, when Vaani really was such a sweet thing...!
She wasn't looking at him, but silhouetted somewhat by the sunshine of the sea, her seafoam green eyes were incredibly lovely, focused so intently on the shell. He almost wasn't prepared when she looked at him again, settling half of the broken shell in his palm. He looked between her face and the shell, a small smile warming his face. "You really are a special kind of person, Vaani." He said, clasping the shell carefully in his fingers.
Really - it already seemed hard to forget about her, and then she had to pull something like THAT--!
"You know, this won't be the last time you see me! I'm determined to be your friend, so I'm gonna visit in Yael someday - if that's something you want." He tilted his head and looked at her intently - hopefully! If she said no, or seemed creeped out, then he'd back off but - he hoped she wouldn't.

"You're too kind, Isaia." Had she known him better she might have called him out for his flattery, but honestly, even then Vaani wasn't likely to be so brazen. Her cheeks warmed under his words though and when she looked up at those eyes, so strange and charming under the Matori sun, she felt her heart stutter.
He is a trauma survivor and you need to watch yourself.
And with an awkward laugh, Vaani turned her eyes down and out toward the water. She was content just to watch the waves and catch her breath, but then he had to say something like THAT-
"O-oh, it won't be?" Vaani wasn't sure if she was horrified or excited. Spirits, if a man like this came to Yael the priesthood would have fits. She couldn't very well tell him that though, not if she wanted to keep his spirits up (hers as well) so she settled on a pained smile. "O-only once you're properly healed. Yael is very damp and I would worry about infections. Still...if you're inclined to come someday I wouldn't turn you away. In the meantime maybe we could exchange letters?"
Letters were good. Letters were safe, non-committal and when he eventually bored of them it would be far less damaging.

[one more from you and we're good! ;3] (7/7) Her russet skin darkened and with some satisfaction, Isaia realized she was blushing. He had to hastily quash down the part of himself that wanted to continue to flirt and tease like he normally would have with a girl. When she looked at him again, there was a moment of hesitation in her response that he couldn't quite decipher. He arched his brow inquisitively at her at first, then beamed when she offered a compromise, nodding earnestly.
His fingertip carefully traced the broken edge of the shell before he carefully slipped it into one of his pockets, returning the grip of both hands to his new cane. "Perfect. I'll write you once we get settled. Soon, I promise."

"Just not too soon; I'm sure your trip will be very taxing and you'll want to get settled." She wouldn't be lying if she wasn't hoping he would forget her part in the entire ordeal. That kind of attention wasn't meant for her; especially when she could of so many more ladies that would be able to match his vibe, whatever...this was.
Still, there was a snippet of her heart that fluttered at the idea. Letters? From a handsome foreigner? It was every girls secret dream so maybe...maybe she wouldn't complain too much if one or two slipped their way to Yael. If he remembered to write.
