Bodytype☘ Fit and broad, Declan has defined muscle mass from all the lifting he does around home. His body type is hidden well under his clothes but standing at 6'2", he can be quite imposing with his usual serious expressions and cold exterior.
Clothes☘ Comfortable. Declan doesn't enjoy a lot of decoration and designs on his shirt. Just something as simple as a polo shirt or button-up over jeans is all he needs.
Hobbies☘Tea-Making And Collecting From an early age, tea was an big part of Declan's life. When his grandmother would visit, she'd bring along her basket of loose teas for the family. Would gift them for Christmas or birthdays. She'd mix her own flavors and taught Declan how to dry and sort so he, too, could make his own when she wasn't around. What he can't grow at home or find in the woods, he'll buy in the city after school. He used to keep a cabinet in the kitchen for his own ingredients, but was finding it too small as he began experimenting more with odder ingredients like chocolate and crushed candy cane. He turned an old, small shed in the backyard into a little tea hut to work on his own flavors. In the cabinet in the kitchen he now keeps instead the store-bought teas that the whole family enjoys.
Working With Animals Before moving to Destiny City, Declan's family had a ranch, where they trained wild Mustangs they would buy at the auctions with the purpose of selling them as fully domesticated mounts. From an early age, he had been fascinated by the process, always watching from behind the fence as his father would work with these once wild animals. He'd play pretend, or try to, with the family dogs and cats, both of which would never co-operate the way he needed them to. The dogs were too friendly, the cats jumped out of his make-shift pens. To tide him over until he was old enough to be in with his father, he worked on training the dogs to do tricks or agility. He even managed teaching the cats a few things. When he wasn't reading, he was likely spending time with anything but other human beings.
Reading When not working with the animals, Declan is usually curled up in his room or on the porch somewhere with a book. The family has internet and cellphone service, but he never was very interested in the internet. Or television for that matter. He prefers a nice, long story that you just can't find TV. Even shows don't last long enough for his tastes. Once he finds a story he loves, he wants to be in it as long as he can, sometimes even rereading the series a second time directly after finishing it if he deems it too short. What's too short? Like 5 large books. Declan devourers literature of almost any kind and just can't seem to get enough of it. He has a large bookshelf in his bedroom, plus books on his desk and side tables, of all kinds. Fantasy. Historical fiction. Fictional and non-fiction animal stories. Books on biology. Modern stories. Sci-fi. Anything short of pure romance, he'll try. Everywhere he goes, there is a book or two in his bag.
Virtues☘Responsible This was an important lesson for Declan's father to teach his kids, expecting at least one of them to take over the ranch when they got old enough. If something goes wrong in the training of a Wild Mustang and you don't fix it, this will only look bad on your reputation in the future. You must always finish the job 100% and if you can't, you hand the animal back to the association. This was a hard lesson for a young Declan to learn as he didn't understand the reasoning behind this and his father had little patience in teaching him. When he did finally learn it, he took a lot of it to heart and now applies it to more than just the animals.
During group projects in school, as much as he loathed working and being around other people, he still did his best to take on his share of the workload. If he messed up or got into trouble, he'd never lie and would take his punishment with little arguing. He is dutiful and obedient, within reason, and always tries to be fair. He also expects fair treatment returned to him. If not, this is one of the few times he might snap out of his quietness and speak up about. Knowing your duty and taking responsibilities for your actions is important to him.
Observant When working with wild animals, you learn to observe their body language very closely. Eventually, this starts to become second-nature when dealing with everything and everyone else in your life, as well.
Little escapes the notice of Declan. He might not be the best when it comes to conversation, but he can often times go off body language to know how someone feels. Normally, he treats this much like he would an animal, treating shy or timid people like skittish horses, his voice low and his movements slower. When he can be bothered to speak to someone.
A lot of the time, Declan loves to just observe people, taking note of their body language and tone of voice when addressing each other. If they're someone familiar to him, he tries to store away in his memory the way they carried themselves, in case he ever has to deal with them himself. He also likes to take note of where he is and what's going on at all times, a byproduct of being uncomfortable outside of his family's acres of land. Just in case he has need of it later. So it goes without saying that he's fairly good with given direction. And if he ever needed to make a police report or put into detail something he had seen, he's got it covered.
Neat When people avoid you because you smell like horses, you learn to be extra attentive to your hygiene. Which wasn't a hard change to make when Declan was already fairly neat of his person and living space. Once a week, he likes to give his room a thorough cleaning, usually during the weekend when he has more time to dedicate to it. He keeps his space organized and free of debris at all times, with his clothes being free of stains and wrinkles and every hair in its place on his head. Had he friends, they'd be wanting to borrow his notes.
He isn't crazy over keeping everything neat and tidy, though. He's not afraid of germs. For how can you be if you grew up on a ranch? He will get as dirty or muddy as the job requires. But the first thing he'll do afterwards is shower and change. For the most part, he tolerates dirt while on the job. Off the job and he doesn't want a single stain to ruin his clothes and make him look like a slob.
Adults often look on Declan as more mature than his age group because of how clean he keeps his space, trusting him with more work than they normally would a teenager. Even if one didn't know about how responsible he was to begin with, just the fact he takes care of himself and his surroundings is enough to set him apart from many of his age-group. If asked to help clean something up, he will without hesitation, adding to his reputation as being reliable to everyone.
Flaws☘Stiff A person's first impression of Declan would be how awkward and stiff he always seems when around other people. Having grown up being mostly by himself or working with the animals on the ranch, he's not had a lot of socializing with other people of any age. He knows his close family and a few from other branches of the tree, but anyone strange is always met with a stiff posture and a mouth closed of any communication. Even for people who know him well, he never seems comfortable. And he's not. He doesn't know how to act with others. Never knows what to say. The only time he's ever truly in his element is when he's working with an animal.
When meeting new people, Declan freezes up and gets embarrassed easily. He doesn't like talking about himself very much and when prompted, will not lie, but will not tell the entire truth about anything. Nor will he ask questions of the other person, leading many of his conversations to be cut off short and he to be left back to his own devices. Which isn't entirely a bad thing, in his opinion, but never having anyone else he feels he can talk to doesn't help him in the long run. When life does start to get to him, he opens up to one of his pets. Since it makes him feel better afterwards, he has never felt the desire to replace his outlet with a real person.
Difficult Being on your own all the time has the disadvantage of making you a difficult person to deal with sometimes. He is not very open. He doesn't like being around people. He's not used to co-operating with others. He is very set in his ways and not having to compromise with someone else who may be a bit different than him. When he wants to do something, he has no one challenging this. He has no other obligations than the ones to help his father around home. So his normal response to a lot of things is a straight up "No." No, he doesn't want to hang out with anyone. No, he doesn't even want to talk to you. No, there is no chance of a middle ground. If he doesn't want to do something, he won't do it. Stubborn, yes, but it's a bit more than that. He simply will not co-operate or work together with anyone else without a lot of headaches for the other person. He will not respect you. He will not listen to you unless you are his superior, in which case the only thing stopping him from continuing to be difficult with you is the fear of a punishment.
Critical/Judgmental Declan likes to do things himself. Declan doesn't like the way you do things. And he for sure will tell you about it. Nothing gets him chatty than doing something in a way he doesn't think is how you should do it. This also applies to himself. He wants to do everything to perfection and will get easily stressed and upset if he can't do it. A byproduct of the way his father runs the ranch, Declan isn't used to not doing everything 100%.
He's also a bit of a pessimist. He isn't interested in putting himself in someone else's shoes to understand them. He often has the habit of taking what he sees and deciding based off that who someone is. And since he's so observant of everything around him, he often feels like he's obviously in the right because he can so easily see it with his own eyes. If you try to sway him, we go back to the fact he's incredibly difficult to deal with when he sets his mind to an opinion.
