Origin of Name: Ilaorun means "Sunrise" in the Yoruba language. Given this particular drink is known for its colors, reminiscent of a sunrise, it made sense to have this queen named after the act itself.

Inspiration: Tequila Sunrise

The Tequila Sunrise is a cocktail made of tequila, orange juice, and grenadine syrup, and served unmixed in a tall glass. The modern drink originates from Sausalito, California in the early 1970s after an earlier one created in the 1930s in Phoenix, Arizona. The cocktail is named for its appearance when served—with gradations of color resembling a sunrise.

The original tequila sunrise contained tequila, creme de cassis, lime juice, and soda water, and was served at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel where it was created by Gene Sulit in the 1930s or 1940s.

The more popular modern version of the cocktail contains tequila, orange juice, and grenadine, and was created by Bobby Lozoff and Billy Rice in the early 1970s while working as young bartenders at the Trident in Sausalito, California north of San Francisco. In 1972, at a private party at the Trident organized by Bill Graham to kick off the Rolling Stones' 1972 tour in America, Mick Jagger had one of the cocktails, liked it, and he and his entourage started drinking them. They later ordered them all across America, even dubbing the tour itself their "cocaine and tequila sunrise tour".

At the time, the Trident was the largest outlet for tequila in the United States, and in 1973 Jose Cuervo picked up on the new drink as a marketing opportunity and put the recipe for the new drink on the back of their bottles of tequila, and promoted it in other ways. Later that same year the Eagles recorded a song called "Tequila Sunrise" for their Desperado album as the drink was soaring in popularity.

Personality: Ilaorunth is a party girl, through and through. From the moment this queen rolled out of her shell, she knew exactly what she wanted out of life--and wasn't going to let anything get in the way of her good time. To say she's fun loving is a bit of an understatement-- if this gold isn't enjoying herself, than she'll do one of two things: turn it into a party, or simply waltz off to find something more fun. She's disinterested in anything that might be boring, repetitive, dry, or otherwise unpleasant. She isn't here for serious business--she's here to enjoy herself. A life without fun isn't a life worth living, at least as far as Ilaorunth is concerned.

Carefree, this dragon isn't the sort to worry about much. She has little by way of ambition, and isn't fussed over the chain of command. Let those who wish to rule do so and fight it out among themselves--Ilaorunth will enjoy herself on the beach, or up in the fireheights with her entourage. She's not the sort of queen to worry about mistakes. If she or her rider make a mistake, or things don't go according to plan, it's not something she's going to get upset about. If someone dresses her down, or has an otherwise negative opinion of her, it won't upset Ilaorunth in the least! Like water rolling off a sea-wherries back, negativity, stress, or irritation doesn't stick long with this queen. Life's too short to get hung up on all that negativity.

Sociable by nature, there are very few that Ilaorunth doesn't like--but one thing she likes, above all else, are boys. Even from an early age, this queen loves-loves-loves to be in the middle of a gaggle of boys. Flirting comes as naturally as breathing, and will only get worse as she grows. What starts out as cute compliments and keen friendships as a hatchling will turn into outright flirtation as she grows. It's much more fun when there are boys involved, after all, especially when they're paying attention to her.

Unfortunately, her fun-loving and carefree nature can cause her some trouble. As far as golds go, Ilaorunth is rather irresponsible. Hard work isn't something she'll eagerly do, which will make her life as a weyrling, or threadfighter, a bit troublesome. Oh, she knows it's her duty to fight The Enemy, but honestly, she'd much rather do anything else. If only she could have lived during the times in Pern's history where Queen's weren't expected to do anything more than clutch! If allowed, she'll happily avoid doing work, or delegate it to another, while she finds something more fun to do instead. Surely, with a little swish of her tail, or a promise for a cuddle later, one of her big, strong, bronze brothers would do the task for her? This doesn't make for great behavior, especially when the Weyr depends on their Queens following orders, or doing hard work to ensure those in the fighting wings remain safe. Sometimes life just isn't fun or easy, and that will be a hard pill for this queen to swallow.

Additionally, she's known to be superficial and more than a little self-centered. While she's a sociable queen, who does enjoy having a good time with just about any and all color dragons, she also has the expectation that the good time should be about her. She wants to be the leader of her circle; she wants to be the one in the limelight. If there was a Dancing Queen, you can bet it would be Ilaorunth, and she can be prone to stealing another's show if she thinks eyes aren't on her. This can lead to trouble with some of her clutchmates, or wingmates, because she really does want to be in the limelight at all times. While she's not prone to fits of temper, she doesn't do well when the world doesn't revolve around her.

Positive Traits: Fun Loving, Carefree, Sociable
Negative Traits: Irresponsible, Flirtatious, Self-Centered

Egg: A medium gold striped egg.

Adult Size: 44'
Physical Attributes: An averge sized queen, Ilaorunth is quite trim and muscular. Her hind legs are rather long for her body, and her tail on the shorter side--but overall she cuts quite a lovely figure.

Additional Notes: Ilaorunth will always be an early-riser, no matter how much sleep she does, or doesn't, get. If her rider wasn't a morning person, she will be now that Ilaorunth is in her life.

When it comes to Flights, Ilaorunth will likely always have a gaggle of favorites. Honestly, any male that shows even he slightest interest in her, will likely be latched upon. She loves boys, and loves knowing that they love her. She's not liable to settle down with anyone, at least not during her younger Turns, much preferring to flit from boy-to-boy-to-boy. Like any self-respecting queen, though, she will have a strong preference for bronzes.

Additionally, don't put it past Ilaorunth to be a homewrecker. If a green (or any other color dragon) has a brown or bronze she wants (or even a cute blue she'd like to spend a little time cozying up to), you can bet she'll not hesitate to find a way to get them tucked under her wing. She doesn't treat her green sisters poorly, but she isn't the type to share what should rightfully be hers. And rest assured--she is queen enough to know it IS her right.

Impression Effect: Nashwa will find herself with oodles more confidence. While she might have been born to serve, she will walk with the air less of a servant, and more that of a leader. Instead of being on the sidelines, she will be more willing to take charge. She'll leave men (and women) a bit breathless because she just gained a whole few levels to her appearance!

Why Me? Nashwa and Ilaorunth were meant for one another. To start, Nashwa is all work and no play and Ilaorunth is absolutely here to challenge that. Life is meant to be lived, and this party-gold has every intention of making sure Nashwa puts away this live-to-work attitude and shine. Alternatively, Nashwa has spent her life living to serve others--and that's not something self-centered Ilaorunth often does. She might be a friendly gold, but she's here to be the star. Nashwa should be able to keep her queen's worst behavior in check, and with time, might even rub off on the gold, and teach her to think more of others. Ah, but Ilaorunth will always think of Hers, and will make sure that her rider lacks of nothing. Nashwa might crave compliments, but you can bet now with a queen at her side, Ilaorunth will ensure she gets them--and more. This gold will make sure Nashwa spends less time on others, and have more time to focus on herself. Additionally, where Nashwa enjoys a bit of gossip, she'll find a partner-in-crime when it comes to digging up some dirt. Unlike her rider, though, this gold won't necessarily keep any secret safe so Nashwa had best be cautious on what she digs up and shares, going forward. Thankfully, you can bet Nashwa is the perfect woman to keep this handful of a gold in-line. Where Ilaorunth will want to cut corners, or not bother with certain responsibilities, Nashwa will hopefully help counterbalance that irresponsibility, especially as they grow and more and more people depend on them. While they might be as different as night and day, these two make a perfect team, balancing out one another in challenging ways that will allow both rider and dragon to grow.

Bronze Demodeth

Origin of Name: Démodé, meaning old fashioned in French.

Inspiration: Old Fashioned

The old fashioned is a cocktail made by muddling sugar with bitters, adding whiskey or, less commonly, brandy, and garnishing with a twist of citrus rind and a cocktail cherry. It is traditionally served in an old fashioned glass (also known as rocks glass), which predated the cocktail.

Developed during the 19th century and given its name in the 1880s, it is an IBA Official Cocktail.[1] It is also one of six basic drinks listed in David A. Embury's The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks.

The first documented definition of the word "cocktail" was in response to a reader's letter asking to define the word in the May 6, 1806, issue of The Balance and Columbian Repository in Hudson, New York. In the May 13, 1806, issue, the paper's editor wrote that it was a potent concoction of spirits, bitters, water, and sugar; it was also referred to at the time as a bittered sling. J.E. Alexander describes the cocktail similarly in 1833, as he encountered it in New York City, as being rum, gin, or brandy, significant water, bitters, and sugar, though he includes a nutmeg garnish as well.

By the 1860s, it was common for orange curaçao, absinthe, and other liqueurs to be added to the cocktail. The original concoction, albeit in different proportions, came back into vogue, and was referred to as "old-fashioned". The most popular of the in-vogue "old-fashioned" cocktails were made with whiskey, according to a Chicago barman, quoted in the Chicago Daily Tribune in 1882, with rye being more popular than Bourbon. The recipe he describes is a similar combination of spirits, bitters, water and sugar of seventy-six years earlier.

The first mention in print of "old fashioned cocktails" was in the Chicago Daily Tribune in February 1880.[7] However, the Pendennis Club, a gentlemen's club founded in 1881 in Louisville, Kentucky, claims the old fashioned cocktail was invented there. The recipe was said to have been invented by a bartender at that club in honor of Colonel James E. Pepper, a prominent bourbon distiller, who brought it to the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel bar in New York City.

With its conception rooted in the city's history, in 2015 the city of Louisville named the old fashioned as its official cocktail. Each year, during the first two weeks of June, Louisville celebrates "Old Fashioned Fortnight" which encompasses bourbon events, cocktail specials and National Bourbon Day which is always celebrated on June 14.

Personality: Demodeth is a man. Well, he's a dragon man. Frankly, there's not much that needs to be explained. He's a dragon of simple needs: good food, good company, and plenty of time to while away admiring all that nature has to offer. It's a beautiful place, the natural world, and he enjoys being out in it. Were he a human, he'd probably take up woodcrafting, but he's not a human, so he'll have to satisfy himself with taking in the sights. He also enjoys hunting fantastically well and he'll one day prove an exceptional hunter. What else is there to know?

Oh, you want to know what he's like? Well, isn't that presumptuous of you? If you must know, and there's no avoiding it, Demodeth is a very private dragon. He's no nonsense, and doesn't have time for dissembling as some others might do. While many bronzes might put on airs, Demodeth believes that his results speak for themselves. As committed as he is to working hard on his own terms, he will also do nothing that he doesn't believe in. He's smart enough to know how to delegate and more than willing to do so.

Although one might assume that he'd keep to himself, he does have a tendency to collect friendships. He does hold them at arm's length, never quite admitting what others mean to him. Still, he would die or probably kill for them. Those who have earned Demodeth's trust can satisfy themselves in knowing that they have it indefinitely. Once his opinion has been made, it's nigh unshakeable. Don't count on him forgiving and forgetting because the former is just as unlikely as the latter.

He has a particularly excellent eye for fine craftsmanship, though he does not possess the ability to make things himself. Perhaps it is part of being a bronze dragon - searching for the weaknesses within a thing, so as to protect against them. He will always know without trying too hard where he should be positioning himself within a Fall, for he will learn drills well and quickly. An intelligent though obstinate beast, Demodeth has considerable potential as a fighter, if not as a leader. Leading would require spending far too much time listening to the affairs of others.

Positive Traits: Self-reliant, loyal, hard working
Negative Traits: Secretive, willful, opinionated

Egg: A small butterfly egg.

Adult Size: 42'
Physical Attributes: A solid bronze, neither the most enormous or the least, Demodeth is middling in size. He is quite well muscled, although there is a plush layer of fat covering said muscles, due to his enjoyment of a good hardy meal.

Additional Notes: It may take Demodeth awhile to find the right mate. Although he can and will chase anything that catches his eye, settling down is another matter entirely. He will have above the usual amount of stamina, though, which might serve him in Queen flights. His hobbies, as listed in his personality, occupy much of his time outside of drills.

Impression Effect: Amusingly enough, Rykin will become even better at wood craft than before - perhaps because Demodeth will be lending his eye to the work. Forget extra charisma, though, because Demodeth claims to have none. Rykin will possess hidden reserves of strength to carry him though even the toughest drills - as, no doubt, befits a bronzerider.

Why Me? Admittedly Rykin drew Demodeth's eye in part due to his background in a field that quite fascinates the bronze. It is inexplicable why Demodeth might enjoy wood crafting, but perhaps it is somewhat owing to his love of the natural world. Perhaps it's for the best that Demodeth does not care one bit about what anyone might think of him, for Rykin almost cares too much. In Demodeth's opinion, it is better to do a thing right for its own sake, and not so that one receives praise or does not face a negative response. Rykin will find his sensitive emotions slightly blunted by the bronze, who takes very little indeed to his hearts.

Bronze Manahahtath
Written by Uta

User Image

Origin of Name: Manahahtath's name is inspired from the borough of Manhattan. It's name derives from the Munsee Lenape language term manaháhtaan (where manah- means "gather", -aht- means "bow", and -aan is an abstract element used to form verb stems). The Lenape word has been translated as "the place where we get bows" or "place for gathering the (wood to make) bows". According to a Munsee tradition recorded in the 19th century, the island was named so for a grove of hickory trees at the lower end that was considered ideal for the making of bows. It was first recorded in writing as Manna-hata, in the 1609 logbook of Robert Juet, an officer on Henry Hudson's yacht Halve Maen (Half Moon).

Inspiration: Manhatten

A Manhattan is a cocktail made with whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters. While rye is the traditional whiskey of choice, other commonly used whiskies include Canadian whisky, bourbon, blended whiskey, and Tennessee whiskey. The cocktail is usually stirred then strained into a cocktail glass and garnished with a dark Maraschino cherry. A Manhattan may also be served on the rocks in a lowball glass

The whiskey-based Manhattan is one of five cocktails named for a New York City borough. It is closely related to the Brooklyn cocktail, which uses dry vermouth and Maraschino liqueur in place of the Manhattan's sweet vermouth, and Amer Picon in place of the Manhattan's angostura bitters.

The Manhattan is one of six basic drinks listed in David A. Embury's 1948 classic The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks.

Popular history suggests that the drink originated at the Manhattan Club in New York City in the mid 1870s, where it was invented by Dr. Iain Marshall for a banquet hosted by Jennie Jerome (Lady Randolph Churchill, mother of Winston) in honor of presidential candidate Samuel J. Tilden. The success of the banquet made the drink fashionable, later prompting several people to request the drink by referring to the name of the club where it originated—"the Manhattan cocktail". However, Lady Randolph was in France at the time and pregnant, so the story is likely a fiction.

However, there are prior references to various similar cocktail recipes called "Manhattan" and served in the Manhattan area. By one account it was invented in the 1860s by a bartender named Black at a bar on Broadway near Houston Street.

The original "Manhattan cocktail" was a mix of "American Whiskey, Italian Vermouth, and Angostura bitters". During Prohibition (1920–1933) Canadian whisky was primarily used because it was available.

An early record of the cocktail can be found in William Schmidt's The Flowing Bowl, published in 1891. In it, he details a drink containing 2 dashes of gum (gomme syrup), 2 dashes of bitters, 1 dash of absinthe, 2⁄3 portion of whiskey, and 1⁄3 portion of vermouth.

The same cocktail appears listed as a "Tennessee Cocktail" in Shake 'em Up! by V. Elliott and P. Strong: "Two parts of whiskey, one part of Italian Vermouth, and a dash of bitters poured over ice and stirred vigorously."

Personality: If ever there was a bronze who was destined to sit at the top, it was Manahahtath. This bronze might have been born at Western, but he also knows he was shelled as part of the upper-crust of Pernese dragon hierarchy. He's important and boy ever does he know it. Not, of course, that he needs others to tell him as much--it's simply a fact. Sophistication comes easy to this bronze, and he has a keen interest in knowledge. He'll take to the weyrling lessons easily, and likely encourage His to participate in digging through the archives, and better learning about the world. If His has no craft, he'll encourage him to pick one up in their spare time; facts comes easy to him, and he'll happily share what he knows with those who care to listen. He's a clever beast, and his high-intelligence is often on display.

He's smart, but he's also handsome. Indeed, Manahahtath is a dapper and posh fellow. He expects to have the best of everything--not, of course, because he's a hedonist--but because he naturally deserves it. He might have more taste than to say as much, but His will know, and he will tastefully remind his clutchmates who they happen to be sitting with. If his rider doesn't have marks, he'll definitely need to find a way to procure them, because Manahahtath is the sort of bronze who has expensive taste. He'll want new straps made from only the finest leather, and is certain he can tell when the cheap stuff is used. His riders clothing will certain chafe his hide if cheaply made, and he will expect the two of them to be seen according to their station. He is as dapper as a dragon can get, and lives as posh a style as he's able. Pity they weren't hatched at High Reaches--for as soon as he finds out how bronzes are treated over there, you can bet he'll be wanting that same treatment in Western.

While His will find a dragon that is nothing short of high-maintenance, to his clutchmates and the world, Manahahtath will be nothing but the epitome of a fine dragon. While he certainly believes himself to be far superior to, well, just about everyone--he would never be so rude to say it. At least not around strangers or acquaintances. Those who fall into his close-knit circle might well find the truth--though if one were to really look, those closest to him tend to be fellow metallics. One must travel in circles most befitting to ones station, after all. While he can be polite and charming to those of any color, he's the sort who can't help but see himself as better. He'll take pity on those born beneath him, because honestly, they can't help they weren't born of higher rank. Any friendliness he might have with them is purely superficial--for he is a worldly dragon who knows that, as a dragon of good breeding, he will be looked upon by those who are less his equal.

Traditionalist by nature, as he grows he will chafe at the Western ideals. Still, it is his home, and he will abide by their system for now. Perhaps with time he'll convince his to go elsewhere; or perhaps he'll find a better reason to stay. Either way, this bronze might struggle under the command of a chromatic, and will certainly do what he can to encourage His to rub elbows with those of the council, or at least those with rank. Surely, their place is meant to be on top, and he'll do what he must to get there.

Positive Traits: Sophisticated, Dapper, Posh
Negative Traits: Traditionalist, Superiority Complex, High-Maintenance

Egg: A medium green tribal egg.

Adult Size: 43'
Physical Attributes: Manahahtath is a large bronze, even if he's not, perhaps, the largest out there. He is strong, buts sleekly built, and can carry himself swiftly while on wing. He is surprisingly quick in air for a dragon of his size. His wings are long and not quite as wide as some others out there, allowing for more agility and speed. His neck and tail make up much for Manahahtath, which makes his body even smaller compared to bronzes of similar size.

Additional Notes: Manahahtath knows he was hatched for a gold, and will certainly not hesitate to participate in any and all gold flights. While he might--might--chase a green for short-term interest, his eyes are certainly on all those who glitter. He has no desire to make long-term attachments to those who aren't gold. Bronzes are the proper mates of queens, after all--even if Western seems to have forgotten such a thing.

Impression Effect: Zhaydegan is going to find himself with a permanent confidence boost that's noticeable from day one. While he will still have some insecurity, naturally, he will find it's far easier to walk with his head held high and pride in his every step. He's now part of an exclusive club--even if he's at Western Weyr--or so Manahahtath will remind him. His position is secure, and he will find a new fearlessness that he might not have originally possessed.

Why Me? Zhaydegan might think that it's expected of him to become a rider, but Manahahtath knows it's his destiny. He was born to be his rider, like it or not. To start, this bronze appreciates the fact that Zhaydegan is a Weyrbrat. This bronze is full of tradition, and appreciates that His comes from a long and "prestigious" family line. The Weyr is where they're meant to be, and he will cast aside any doubt that Zhaydegan might have about his place. Why map the stars when they can fly to them? No height will be too high for Manahahtath and he will carry His straight to the to--figuratively and literally. This posh and dapper dragon needed someone who was clever and could keep up with him. Where this bronze has a drive to go up the chain of command, it's Zhay's strategic nature that will help ensure they'll make great future Wingleaders and Weyrleaders (if Manahahtath has his way). He's high-maintenance, and demanding, but Zhaydegan is known to be pushy himself, and should be able to help keep this dragon in line when he's at his worst. And there will be some days when this bronze is definitely the worst. Any insecurity within Zhaydegan will be balanced out by this bronze's sense of superiority. He will find an absolute ally in Manahahtath, and be supported anytime he starts to doubt. Together, rider and dragon balance one another and should be able to help each other grow. Manahahtath can polish up Zhaydegan and turn him into quite the sophisticated man, while Zhaydegan will be able to soften Manahahtath's worst views, or at least, keep the bronze in check. Together, this pair has the possibility to go very far, indeed.

Origin of Name: From the Ottoman Turkish kahve, which is derived from the Arabic gahwah, a type of wine that takes its name from the verb gahiya. This means "to lack hunger."

Inspiration: Irish Coffee

Irish coffee is a cocktail consisting of hot coffee, Irish whiskey, and sugar, stirred, and topped with cream. The coffee is drunk through the cream.

Different variations of coffee cocktails pre-date the now-classic Irish coffee by at least 100 years.

From the mid-19th century, the Pharisäer and the Fiaker were served in Viennese coffee houses; both were coffee cocktails served in glass, topped with whipped cream. The former was also known in northern Germany and Denmark around that time. Around 1900, the coffee cocktail menu in the Viennese cafés also included Kaisermelange, Maria Theresia, Biedermeier-Kaffee and a handful of other variations on the theme.

In 19th-century France, a mixture of coffee and spirits was called a gloria.
"Un trait de son caractère était de payer généreusement quinze francs par mois pour le gloria qu'il prenait au dessert." (Balzac, Le Père Goriot, 1834, I.)
"Il aimait le gros cidre, les gigots saignants, les glorias longuement battus." (Flaubert, Madame Bovary, 1857.)

Several places claim to have developed the modern recipe in the 1950s. One version is attributed to a Joe Sheridan, head chef at the restaurant and coffee shop in the Foynes Airbase Flying boat terminal building, County Limerick. In 1942 or 1943 he added whiskey to the coffee of some disembarking passengers.

Stanton Delaplane, a travel writer for the San Francisco Chronicle, maintains he brought Irish coffee to the United States after drinking it at Shannon Airport. His version is that he worked with the Buena Vista Cafe in San Francisco to start serving it on November 10, 1952., Sheridan later emigrated to work at the Buena Vista Cafe.

It is also told that the original maker of the now infamous Irish coffee was invented by Joseph Jackson, of Jackson’s hotel Ballybofey county Donegal, who whilst fighting in World War II made the drink in an effort to keep his fellow comrades awake through the night under attack from German soldiers. Following the war he brought the drink that he invented back to Donegal, making the first Irish Coffee.

Personality: A dragon of deep passions, brown Kahveth experiences his emotions keenly. He's a bold, strong fellow with deep convictions. One could never successfully accuse Kahveth for being a hypocrite, as it's just not in his nature. He says what he means and he means what he says, and that's that! Oh sure, you might say he has a bit of a temper, but once he's had it out, he's able to calm down fairly quickly. Although he can hold a grudge for awhile, ultimately he'll probably learn to forgive and to forget. It's just that if someone keeps doing the same sort of thing, and it runs contrary to his own values, they'll probably go right back in his bad books.

Kahveth is a friendly fellow and loves nothing more than to be surrounded by his comrades. It has never occurred to him not to be confident, as he doesn't really see what there is to be afraid of. In fact, it might be difficult to find anything at all that he truly fears. One might say he's a little bit of a dare devil, but that's just because he is a very brave dragon. Then again, he's also a bit... convinced of his own immortality. It'll take a really close call to convince him otherwise, and even then that might just be temporary. After all, dragons are known to bounce back fairly well from trauma.

When it comes to love, Kahveth is likely to be in over his head. He's a bit foolhardy, and that doesn't help him to keep a level head when it comes to the fairer sex (or his own.) What might seem like a straightforward arrangement to Kahveth may actually be something far deeper, and although he does possess quite large hearts that doesn't mean he's wise. In fact, he's very much the opposite. Not a dullard, but definitely not a sage by any means, Kahveth goes through life like a bull in a china shop. He does have a very sweet center, and the more others get to know him, the likelier it is that they'll have a chance to see it firsthand.

Deep, deep down Kahveth is a little immature. He wants so badly to be taken seriously, but it can be hard to feel as though his voice is being heard. Perhaps he has a childish way of expressing himself from time to time, but that doesn't make him any less genuine or any less serious! It's not fair, and that sense of unfairness is probably what makes Kahveth appear so resistant to growing up. He can be very, very stubborn, and once he's decided that someone was in the wrong he won't let it go easily. If it gets him in trouble, well... in trouble he'll be.

Disclaimer: Please note, Kahveth's personality is based off of the components of the drink itself as well as the method by which it is made. He is not based off of the drink's name.

Positive Traits: Outgoing, passionate, friendly
Negative Traits: Daredevil, short tempered, obtuse

Egg: A small yellow swirl egg.

Adult Size: 33'
Physical Attributes: Surprisingly sleek for his size, yet possessed of corded muscle that gives the lie to his smooth appearance. Quite a handsome fellow indeed.

Additional Notes: Kahveth is likely to get his hearts broken a number of times before he finds Mr. or Mrs. Right. He feels so deeply, but can't necessarily tell when someone is being genuine versus leading him on. They'd be foolish to do the latter, but if it were to happen he'd be devastated. Inclined to chase where his hearts take him. Medium flame length, extra strong overall in Threadfall.

Impression Effect: Handsome? No, Allamor is the most stunning man in the Weyr, thank you very much. Allamor just got +20 charisma, and... does he glow slightly around the edges? No? Maybe that's just the imagination of some swooning fanboys and girls.

Why Me? Allamor gets Kahveth! They are both romantic at heart, and no doubt will spend quite a bit of time bonding over Kahveth's woes in love. Although he has a very strong tie to his family, Kahveth's relationship with his sisters can be a little fraught, something he knew instantly that Allamor would understand. He appreciates the idealist in Allamor, and wants to meet him where he's at. Of course, it will be up to Allamor to settle his brown when he loses his temper... something which Kahveth knows he can trust his rider with.

Origin of Name: Rossoth is derived from Italian vermouth, sometimes called rosso. Vermouth is a tradition ingredient in a martini.

Inspiration: Martini

The martini is a cocktail made with gin and vermouth, and garnished with an olive or a lemon twist. Over the years, the martini has become one of the best-known mixed alcoholic beverages.

H. L. Mencken called the martini "the only American invention as perfect as the sonnet", and E. B. White called it "the elixir of quietude".

By 1922 the martini reached its most recognizable form in which London dry gin and dry vermouth are combined at a ratio of 2:1, stirred in a mixing glass with ice cubes, with the optional addition of orange or aromatic bitters, then strained into a chilled cocktail glass. Over time the generally expected garnish became the drinker's choice of a green olive or a twist of lemon peel.

A dry martini is made with dry, white vermouth. By the Roaring Twenties, it became a common drink order. Over the course of the 20th century, the amount of vermouth steadily dropped. During the 1930s the ratio was 3:1 (gin to vermouth), and during the 1940s the ratio was 4:1. During the latter part of the 20th century, 6:1, 8:1, 12:1, 15:1 (the "Montgomery", after British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery's supposed penchant for attacking only when in possession of great numerical superiority), or even 50:1 or 100:1 Martinis became considered the norm.

A dirty martini contains a splash of olive brine or olive juice and is typically garnished with an olive.

A perfect martini uses equal amounts of sweet and dry vermouth.

Some martinis were prepared by filling a cocktail glass with gin, then rubbing a finger of vermouth along the rim. There are those who advocated the elimination of vermouth altogether. According to Noël Coward, "A perfect martini should be made by filling a glass with gin, then waving it in the general direction of Italy", Italy being a major producer of vermouth. Luis Buñuel used the dry martini as part of his creative process, regularly using it to sustain "a reverie in a bar". He offers his own recipe, involving Angostura bitters, in his memoir.

In 1966, the American Standards Association (ASA) released K100.1-1966, "Safety Code and Requirements for Dry Martinis", a tongue-in-cheek account of how to make a "standard" dry martini. The latest revision of this document, K100.1-1974, was published by American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the successor to ASA, though it is no longer an active standard.

The traditional martini comes in a number of variations. The fictional spy James Bond sometimes asked for his vodka martinis to be "shaken, not stirred",(although, in books by Ian Fleming, Bond asks for "stirred, not shaken" ), following Harry Craddock's The Savoy Cocktail Book (1930), which prescribes shaking for all its martini recipes. The proper name for a shaken martini is a Bradford; however, Somerset Maugham is often quoted as saying that "a martini should always be stirred, not shaken, so that the molecules lie sensuously on top of one another." A martini may also be served on the rocks; that is, with the ingredients poured over ice cubes and served in an old fashioned glass.

Personality: There are great hidden depths within Rossoth. Depths which, truth be told, other dragons may never hope to truly uncover. Not that Rossoth will mind terribly much if no one ever figures him out. It's part of his mystique, and he's aware of that fact. It isn't something he does by design, at least not the design of seeming mysteriously alluring. He holds others at arm's length, waiting until he can truly trust them before ever letting them close enough to know even a part of him. A clever fellow, Rossoth is an excellent judge of character.

In another life, he might have made for an exceptional spy, but Rossoth is a dragon of course. As such, it is his honor and duty to be the best Threadfighter Pern has to offer. He fears becoming close to others, lest in a moment of weakness he loses sight of the target before him. What if he flinched in the line of duty when he needed to act? Such cannot be the case. He will not allow his feelings, however deep, to get in the way of doing what he must.

Where he is called upon to act swiftly, he will have no trouble at all. Yet ask Rossoth to open up, to share his feelings or to explain his behavior, he will not. He is the master of his domain, and need only answer to himself. At least when it comes to matters of the hearts. This will likely prove to be frustrating to his rider in attempts to forge weyrling bonds, but it will take an awful lot of convincing to get this boy to bend. Strategy will be another thing he excels at, and if he's obsessed with his work, well... work before play, after all.

Unfortunately, Rossoth can be a bit of a rake. It's not necessarily that he wants to run through a series of lovers one after the other, it's that he tends to fall in love easily, and often. Getting him to stay in love can be quite tricky, as his hearts are very changeable. Nevertheless, he is smooth and suave when at work, for all that he might hold himself at arm's length. This leads to misunderstandings with ladies and gentlemen alike, for his attention might seem more dedicated than it truly is. If someone were to truly secure his hearts, there is no doubt he would be devoted, but the road to such a thing would be rocky and long indeed.

Positive Traits: Intelligent, honor bound, strategic
Negative Traits: Closed-off, stubborn, secretive

Egg: A large orange galaxy egg.

Adult Size: 40'
Physical Attributes: Large but not enormous, Rossoth is average in every other way but his length. Handsome yet not striking, he blends in fairly well in a group... which is his intention.

Additional Notes: Interestingly, Rossoth has a tendency to collect things. He'd collect a piece of his shell if he thought he could get away with it. He enjoys bathing in the sun, and will spend an inordinate amount of time doing so when not on the duty roster. Rossoth will only join a Flight if he's especially interested in the other dragon, though good luck getting him to admit to it - not that that stops him from making several beauties (of the feminine or masculine persuasion) in love with him at one time.

Impression Effect: Keleres will find it much, much easier to fade into the background - even those who don't know her will at first have the impression that they've met before, though they can't necessarily put a name to her face. Actually sneaking around will come naturally, as well.

Why Me? Oh Keleres, was there ever truly any doubt that you were Rossoth's? Okay, maybe there was because he wasn't telling anyone where his hearts stood, but that's just par for the course with this dragon. But make no mistake, Rossoth will not tolerate using others for its own sake. Keleres has just inherited a very powerful conscience, and she's going to learn what it means to do right by the Weyr and those in it. Rossoth will enhance Keleres's good aspects, while honing softly away at those traits he finds less desirable - not to the point of removing them, but putting her powers to good use.

Blue Chinanazith

Origin of Name: In the Chichewa language, chinanazi is the word for pineapple.

Inspiration: Piña Colada

The piña colada is a sweet cocktail made with rum, cream of coconut or coconut milk, and pineapple juice, usually served either blended or shaken with ice. It may be garnished with either a pineapple wedge, maraschino cherry, or both.

The name piña colada (Spanish) literally means "strained pineapple", a reference to the freshly pressed and strained pineapple juice used in the drink's preparation.

The earliest known story states that in the 19th century, Puerto Rican pirate Roberto Cofresí, to boost his crew's morale, gave them a beverage or cocktail that contained coconut, pineapple and white rum. This was what would be later known as the famous piña colada. With his death in 1825, the recipe for the piña colada was lost. Historian Haydée Reichard disputes this version of the story.

In 1950 The New York Times reported that "Drinks in the West Indies range from Martinique's famous rum punch to Cuba's pina colada (rum, pineapple and coconut milk)."

The Caribe Hilton Hotel claims Ramón "Monchito" Marrero created the Piña Colada in 1954 while a bartender at the hotel. According to this account, Mr. Marrero finally settled upon the recipe for the Piña Colada, which he felt captured the true nature and essence of Puerto Rico. The hotel was presented with a proclamation in 2004 by Puerto Rico Governor Sila M. Calderón celebrating the drink's 50th anniversary.

Barrachina, a restaurant in Puerto Rico, says that "a traditional Spanish bartender Don Ramon Portas Mingot in 1963 created what became the world's famous drink: the Piña Colada."

In 1978 Puerto Rico proclaimed the cocktail its official drink.

Historically a few drops of fresh lime juice or bitters were added to taste.

In the United States, National Piña Colada Day is celebrated on 10 July.

The cocktail gained worldwide fame after Rupert Holmes released his 1979 song "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)", which became a popular hit around the world.

Jazz icon and flugelhorn player Chuck Mangione likewise released a tune titled "Piña Colada" on his 1979 album Fun and Games.

The cocktail serves as part of the title of the Garth Brooks song "Two Piña Coladas".

Personality: No shoes, no shirt, no problem. It's Chinanazith's motto, and he he lives by it every, single day. To say this blue is relaxed is probably an understatement. The world could be burning around him, and he still likely wouldn't be in a hurry to get where he was going. There's no reason to rush, after all. One must savor the moment, after all, lest the world pass you by. He's the sort of dragon who will stop what he's doing just to say hello, get a cuddle, or simply take in the sights around him. What's the rush? Whatever he's been tasked to do can probably wait a minute or two. The problem is, it isn't just a minute or two, not with him. It's... hours. Days. Turns. His rider is going to have to keep this blue on task regularly, lest his dragon simply lay down and nap, or soak up the sun. He can do his wing flappies later, right now he wants to catch some rays, and lounge. Chinanazith's the sort of blue who likes to put off until tomorrow what he could done that day, and then continue to put it off. His rider had best keep an eye on him, lest he cause problems by his indolent nature.

Good-humored and breezy, Chinanazith isn't the sort of blue who struggles making friends. He's an easy-going creature, and has little by way of temper. A temper is just too much work. This blue can always see the silver lining, and walks on the sunny-side of the street every day. If someone's feeling down, this blue is here to help cheer them up. Very little gets him down. Sure, life can be rough, but this blue can rebound very easily. It's not because he doesn't care--he just isn't the sort to be stressed, anxious, or upset for long periods. As a hachling and dragon, he's nothing but kindness and a sunny disposition.

For all his goodness, sometimes Chinanazith is indolent. On top of procrastinating most of his work, this blue can be lazy and idle on top of it. If it takes a modicum of effort, this blue stands a good chance of simply not doing at all. He might be hungry, but unless His is going to do the hunting, Chinanzith would rather go hungry. Run around with other weyrlings? Eh, he'd rather have a cuddle pile. It might take ample pushing, pleading, and ordering to get Chinanazith to move from his beach wallow, and likely will all his life.

Perhaps because of his breezy and stress-free attitude, Chinanazith can be shameless. He doesn't mind trouble, nor others judgment of him. Worries roll right off his back--but so can etiquette or local mores. No matter how great the embarrassment, this blue isn't the sort to be fussed by what others think of him or His. Shaming doesn't get him to move any faster, neither does punishment nor threat of consequence. He's a blue who moves at his own pace, and his rider is going to have to try to convince him to at least try to keep up.

Positive Traits: Relaxed, Good-Humored, Breezy
Negative Traits: Procrastinator, Indolent, Shameless

Egg: A small sunset egg.

Adult Size: 31'
Physical Attributes: Chinanazith is a beefy blue. He's not at all agile and grace and is built a bit more like a brown than some of his smaller companions. That said, he doesn't have the stamina of a brown, despite being stocky and strong. Indolent beast that he is, Chinanazith will likely wind up with a layer of fat. He's a good looking blue, mind, and isn't aware of it at all--all bodies are beach bodies, after all.

Additional Notes: Chinanazith enjoys flights, but honestly is usually too lazy to take chase. For this blue to chase will require him to have some actual attachment and genuine desire in the dragon in question. The idea of twining tails with others definitely interests him--but all the effort to get the prize can keep him grounded.

He also loves the beach and water. Any amount of free time will have him trying to take himself down to the beach. If his rider doesn't like sun and surf, they will after Impressing.

Impression Effect: Tyanan's explosive and more violent nature is going to be tempered down to the extreme. While the man always had a slow-fuse-then-explode sort of temper, he will now find that the explosion never quite happens now that Chinanazith is in his life. Sure, he might get frustrated or upset during trying times, but he will find himself amazingly calm and relaxed. That violent nature is now a thing of the past.

Why Me? To start, Chinanazith was immediately drawn to a fellow beach-lover. A Candidate who had once been a Dolphineer was a perfect choice for this water-and-sand-loving blue dragon. On a less superficial note, Chinanazith and Tyanan will help balance one another out. Tyanan has the fearless drive and duty-bound nature that will help get this blue off the ground. This lazy dragon needs someone to do the heavy-lifting, and it's clear Tyanan will ensure they stay on top of lessons, sweeps, drills, and assignments. On the flipside, Chinanazith will temper Tyanan's relentlessness, and his perfectionist nature. When things start to spiral for Tyanan, Chinanazith will remind him to relax and enjoy the moment. He doesn't need to get frustrated--everything will turn out as it should, and be all right. Together, these two will be able to challenge one another, and balance out one another's flaws. They were made for each other, and with Tyanan's drive, matched with Chinanzith's easy-affability, these two will become a very well-loved pair within Western Weyr. They can go high up the chain, if they want... Or they can simply enjoy their life at the beach. Regardless of their position, Chananazith will always be there for His.

Blue Haitanth

Origin of Name: Haitanth is named after the Romanization of the Chinese word for "beach", 海滩 (hǎitān).

Inspiration: Sex on the Beach

A Sex on the Beach is an alcoholic cocktail containing vodka, peach schnapps, orange juice and cranberry juice. The cocktail is usually consumed during summer months. It is an IBA Official Cocktail.

Sex on the Beach sports a provocative name for a harmless fruity cocktail. It’s easy to make and even easier to drink, so it’s perfect for your next tropical vacation or cocktail party.

No one can seem to agree on where the name Sex on the Beach originated, but many suggest the cocktail may have been invented when a bartender combined a Fuzzy Navel with a Cape Codder. The fruity sipper is served over ice in a Highball glass and garnished with an orange slice.

This fairly simple concoction has a few tales behind it. Some attribute this drink, and its name, to a bartender at Confetti’s Bar in Florida. Ted Pizio was challenged to sell the most peach schnapps in the area as part of the promotion for the new spirit. He created the fruity cocktail and decided to name it after the reasons why he thought tourists visited the area. Back in 1987, he decided that sex and beaches were more popular than Mickey Mouse, thinking of the spring-breakers who would be the target market for the drink, and so the name was born.

Despite this quite believable story, historians have found examples of this cocktail in recipe books as far back as 1982. The idea is that it was created by combining a Fuzzy Navel and a Cape Codder.

Regardless of how the drink came to be, it was quickly picked up by TGI Friday’s which had a great reputation for cocktails at the time. This helped to raise awareness of the drink, creating its cult classic status that it enjoys today.

The original drink was made using peach schnapps, vodka, orange juice and grenadine. However, it is much more common to see bars serving it with cranberry juice, to replace the grenadine. This cocktail has been reworked many times, with the Woo Woo possibly being the most popular derivative, simply omitting the orange juice.

Other drinks include the Sex on Fire, which uses Fireball cinnamon whiskey, instead of vodka, and Sex on the Driveway, which uses blue curacao and sprite in place of fruit juices, giving it a very bright blue color.

Sex on the Beach is very much a drink attributed to the 80s and is not as popular in modern bars as it once was. However, a fairly recent song, Cake by the Ocean, was created after the name of the drink got lost in translation with the Swedish producers working with the band DNCE.

Personality: Hello world--Haitanth is here, and he can already sense you're in love. Self-assured to the extreme, this blue walks with the confidence of any bronze of gold, and seems to believe that there is nothing he can't do. There is no challenge too great for Haitanth, and any doubters or naysayers will be laughed at and ignored. Haters gonna hate, and Haitanth knows he'll be a very disliked blue.

Does he mind? Not at all. Because he knows he broke the mold the very minute he hatched. Everyone else is just trying to keep up.

Vain though he might be--and he is quite a vain creature--Haitanth does have his charm. He's the sort of dragon born with a silver tongue, and he'll happily use it to his advantage. If he's ever in trouble, this blue can usually find a way to talk himself out of it. He's the sort of dragon who always has the right turn of phrase, and is clever enough to know how to grease the wheels of those who might cause him problems. Even his insults can go undetected when he plays his cards right. Honestly, the bigger he gets, he'll find himself with his own menagerie of dragons half-in-love with him, each vying to get his attention.

And why shouldn't they be? He is the most beautiful dragon on Pern, after all.

Ah, but Haitanth is a dragon who knows what he wants, and often times, his wants can change in a moment's notice. What he liked yesterday might not be what he likes today. He can be a fickle creature, and a demanding one at that. He likes what he likes, and wants things just so. He isn't the sort to back away from what he desires, and rest assured, he will find a way to get whatever his hearts are set on. He's known to be demanding of his clutchmates, wingmates, lovers, and even his own rider. He knows what's best, or so he thinks, and expects them to fall in line.

If charm doesn't work, demands will. Like any queen, Haitanth can be demanding in his expectations of others. Unlike the queens, Haitanth has no power to order others around, but that doesn't mean this blue won't try. Behind all his vanity and charm lies a blue that can be troublesome at his worst.

On top of being imperious, this blue tends to become obsessive. Any goals or tasks given him by those in charge will be done perfectly. If he fails, he will try, and try again. And again. He won't stop if it's not done to his standards, and rest assured, his standards are high. Additionally, as he ages, and starts dabbling with others hearts, you can bet he'll find himself quietly (or not so quietly) obsessed with any number of boys. Maybe they're ones who don't notice him; maybe they're ones he too-soon wrote off. Maybe they're his flavor of the sevenday, maybe they're happily mated to another. While Haitanth isn't one for drama, his rider will get an earful when Haitanth starts pining. He can, and likely will, spook away some potential beaus by wanting too much, too fast, just as likely as he'll write-off possible good matches simply because they aren't interesting-enough to start.

Haitanth is the sort of blue who is simply destined for complicated and messy future relationships.

Positive Traits: Decisive, Charming, Self-Assured
Negative Traits: Obsessive, Imperious, Vain

Egg: A large purple glitter egg.

Adult Size: 29'
Physical Attributes: Haitanth is on the larger size for a blue, though by no means the largest. All said, while he's possesses a muscular frame, there's a sleekness to him that's clear. His neck and tail are long, meaning his body size is actually a bit smaller than it might first look. His wings are unusually large, which adds to his bulk when they're tucked against his sides.

Additional Notes: This blue is here for the boys, sorry gals. While he'll happily gossip with his clutch sisters, and even happily fall into a cuddle pile, when it comes to flights he's here for the gents and gents alone. Capturing his hearts for the short-term is no problem--but when he's bit by the love bug, you can bet he'll be absolutely enthralled. Any who don't perform to his expectations, though, will find a cool morning after, indeed.

Complicated crushes, pining, breaking the hearts of others, writing-off of potential lovers, and trying to catch the eyes of those impossible to catch are all possibilities for this blue. He won't make a match easily, and the drama involved is likely to be high.

Impression Effect: Sivu's timidness will be a thing of the past! He will be hit with nothing but confidence and self-assurance, thanks to his blue dragon. Where he might have waffled or kept things to himself, he'll now have little trouble speaking up, or sharing his work. If that also helps enhance his good looks? Well, he is a rider now... and there's just something fine about that Impression shine. All the better to attract those boys!

Why Me? Sivu and Haitanth have the possibility to be a perfect match...or a bit of a trainwreck. Either way, this blue sees great potential within Sivu and has every desire to draw it out. Where Sivu is insecure and timid, you can bet Haitanth has the confidence and self-assurance for them both. If His can't walk with his head held high, than Haitanth will do it for them, or make any lingering insecurity some sort of trend. Where Sivu might be less inclined to lead or go places, or if he's feeling lazy and content to just be where he is, Haitanth will drag him kicking and screaming to the very top, and make sure His enjoys it. It's not that Haitanth wants to add stress to his rider--but he is certain that Sivu deserves nothing but the best of everything, and if he won't go out and get it, Haitanth will do it for them. This blue is absolutely the drive that Sivu was missing... But on the flipside, can also be the brake that Haitanth needs. Left to his own devices, this blue can push himself too far, or become far too obsessed over some task or some boy. Sivu's laid-back and lazy nature can, perhaps, help temper Haitanth when he is suffering at his own hand. He can remind the blue to take a break and breathe. Additionally, Sivu's natural approach-ability might help make both rider and dragon accessible to others who find Haitanth overwhelming, or downright too much. Admittedly, Haitanth is a lot, but Sivu will be able to help dull the sharper edges the blue possesses, and together, both rider and dragon, will thrive.

P.S. There will be much gushing about boys. Always boys.

Sivu (Spockat)

Origin of Name: Iste is the word for Ice Tea in various languages, such as Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish.

Inspiration: Long Island Iced Tea

A Long Island iced tea is a type of alcoholic mixed drink typically made with vodka, tequila, light rum, triple sec, gin, and a splash of cola, which gives the drink the same amber hue as its namesake. A popular version mixes equal parts vodka, tequila, gin, rum, triple sec, with 1 1⁄2 parts sour mix and a splash of cola. Lastly, it is decorated with the lemon and straw, after stirring with bar spoon smoothly.

Most variants use equal parts of the main liquors, but include a smaller amount of triple sec (or other orange-flavored liqueur). Close variants often replace the sour mix with lemon juice, replace the cola with diet cola or actual iced tea, or add white crème de menthe. Most variants do not include any tea.
The drink has a much higher alcohol concentration (approximately 22 percent) than most highball drinks due to the relatively small amount of mixer.

Robert "Rosebud" Butt claims to have invented the Long Island iced tea as an entry in a contest to create a new mixed drink with triple sec in 1972 while he worked at the Oak Beach Inn on Long Island, New York.

A slightly different drink is claimed to have been invented in the 1920s during Prohibition in the United States by an "Old Man Bishop" in a local community named Long Island in Kingsport, Tennessee. The drink was then perfected by Ransom Bishop, Old Man Bishop's son. This drink included whiskey and maple syrup, and varied quantities of the five liquors, rather than the modern one with cola and five equal portions of the five liquors.

The popularity of the Long Island has spawned its own family of highballs. Many drinks remain popular in their own right in numerous locales throughout the United States, while owing their existence to the success of the original Long Island iced tea. An example of a variation to the Long Island is the Grateful Dead (also variously known as the Purple Rain or the Black Superman), which uses the same mix as a Long Island but the Triple Sec is replaced with a shot of Chambord and the cola replaced with lemon-lime soda.

The Adios ******** is considered a variation of the Long Island Iced Tea with Blue Curaçao substituting the Triple Sec and lemon-lime soda substituting the cola; it has a distinctive blue color. See Blue Hawaiian. If cranberry juice is substituted for cola, the result is a Long Beach Iced Tea and has a reddish color. If Midori is substituted for the Coca-Cola the result is a Tokyo Iced Tea and has a greenish color. In the Western United States, Long Island Iced Tea is often made without Tequila. For the original recipe, one must order a Texas Tea instead.

Personality: Isteth is a blue who oozes nothing but enthusiasm. He's Pern's one-man cheerleader, and isn't afraid of pouring all of his energy into any given task or adventure. Need a little help getting up in the morning? Isteth has your back! Let's get up and go! It's time to play! Suns up, we're up! Even the most mundane of tasks will find this blue dragon throwing in his all--and he doesn't seem to realize that many of his clutchmates, or even his own rider, don't necessarily feel the same way.

Life is exciting, and will always be exciting, to this blue. He could watch the same sunrise, from the same ledge, for another fifty Turns and be thrilled about it every single time. He loves sharing his discoveries with his rider and beloved clutchmates, and rest assured, he will share them. Every. Time. That rock? LOOK AT ITS SHAPE! HOW COOL! That bit of grass? IT IS SO GREEN AND SO BEAUTIFUL! Honestly, if Isteth were a font, it would be bold and all caps. Not because he wants to be unnecessarily loud, but because he needs to make sure everyone is as excited as him.

Isteth does have a good heart, and is one of the more cheerful dragons of the clutch. He casts no judgment concerning color or rank, and treats all of his cluch and future wingmates with nothing but pleasure. Friendliness is something he has in droves, and theoretically, he should have friends in droves.

Unfortunately, he also has no filter.

Tact is not something Isteth is known to possess. He'll talk the headknobs off any of his clutchmates, and be excited about any and all subjects. But he doesn't seem to know when to shut up, or when a certain line of conversation is best to be avoided. One moment he's complimenting a sister on her most recent flight, the next he's talking about how it's amazing she managed to go for so long, given she's gained at least forty pounds since they last talked and must have been heavy to carry! --wait--where are you going? Can he go too?! Isteth's excitement just blinds him to what he should--or shouldn't be--saying. He'll put his foot in it again, and again, and again.

He's not the most self-aware of dragons, and has a tendency to miss certain social cues. His rider may have to try to keep him in line, or at least help filter him because Isteth needs a little help when it comes to slamming on the breaks--and not just in conversation. Much like his personality, this blue is only too happy to make decisions on the fly, without thinking them fully through. Certain, he can be just as heroic as any of his clutchmates, but sometimes he makes a move without realizing it might put others in danger, or his own rider at risk. One minute they're catching a stray strand of Thread, the next, they're diving well out of formation to catch an even bigger strand--and possibly getting in someone else's airspace.

While Isteth can make a formidable, fearless wingmate--he'll be a challenge to keep in line. Trouble might follow this blue often, but it's a challenge he'll meet with excitement.

Positive Traits: Enthusiastic, Affable, Excitable
Negative Traits: Tactless, Rash, Unaware

Egg: A small teal glow egg.

Adult Size: 25'
Physical Attributes: Isteth is an average sized blue when it comes to length, but he's known to be quite long of limb. His headknobs are unusually long and curve up ever so slightly. He's small of bone, and definitely built more for speed than stamina.

Additional Notes: Isteth will absolutely love flights, and will participate frequently. He has no preference when it comes to companionship, and will twine necks willingly with a handsome blue or brown, as he will with the pretty greens. He can be a loyal blue, if ever his hearts were truly captured, but until then he'll happily chase often and frequently.

Also, secrets don't last long with Isteth. Don't tell him any, because you know he's a one-man gossip mill.

Impression Effect: Orryxa is going to find all her trauma that's haunting her is suddenly, immediately, healed. While she certainly will still have the pain of her past, Isteth will ensure she's supported fully when it does rise to the surface. She doesn't have to go through the hard parts alone, and can begin to truly cope, and heal. Her joy can now be more genuine, and she will look at the Weyr and the world through new eyes--Isteth's eyes--and she might well finally find herself home.

Why Me? Isteth and Orryxa are two-peas-in-a-pod and are likely to be nothing short of trouble for Western Weyr. Isteth was immediately drawn to Orry for a variety of reasons; she is a woman of deep passions, of which this blue can absolutely, positively relate. He doesn't do anything without giving it his all, and knows that his rider can become nothing short of obsessed when it comes to her interests. Additionally, his sweet nature can act as a balm for the girl with the quiet and hidden trauma. She needn't fear anymore, or be weighted down by the pain of the past. Instead, she can look ahead to the future, with Isteth at her side, and of all the good they can do now that they're together. He's naturally buoyant and sweet, and will happily cheer her up, and share in that pain. Additionally, where Orryxa is missing the excitement of seeing the world and all its beautiful vistas, Isteth will bring new excitement to her life every single day. Every day he will find something new to gush about, to share with her, and she, in turn, will look at life with new wonder. Her immaturity and naivety will match equally with this blue's rash and unaware nature--but her experience might also help temper him at his worst. She will need to reign him in... or at least learn when to pull the brake for them both. This pair has the potential for catastrophe, truly--but also the potential for greatness. When pointed at a challenge, there is no doubt the two of them will have the drive and passion to succeed...even if the rest of the Weyr is burned down in the process.

Origin of Name: Tianxiath, for the Chinese word tianxia... which means "all under heaven." Tianxia is now used in the modern day as a synonym for the word cosmopolitan.

Inspiration: Cosmopolitan

A cosmopolitan, or informally a cosmo, is a cocktail made with vodka, triple sec, cranberry juice, and freshly squeezed or sweetened lime juice.

The International Bartenders Association recipe is based on vodka citron, lemon-flavored vodka. The cosmopolitan is a relative of cranberry coolers like the Cape Codder. Though often presented far differently, the cosmopolitan also bears a likeness in composition to the kamikaze cocktail.

The origin of the cosmopolitan is disputed.

While the cocktail is widely perceived to be a more modern creation, there is a strikingly similar recipe for a cosmopolitan which appears in Pioneers of Mixing at Elite Bars 1903-1933, published in 1934.

Jigger of Gordon's Gin (1 1⁄2 US fl oz [4.4 cl] Beefeater)
2 dash Cointreau (1⁄2 US fl oz [1.5 cl] Cointreau)
Juice of 1 Lemon (1 US fl oz [3.0 cl] Lemon Juice)
1 tsp [.5 cl] Raspberry Syrup (homemade)

Shake with ice and strain into a cocktail glass.

Made with ingredients that would have been readily available during the period, this identically named cocktail aims for the same effect. If this drink is in fact the source of the modern cosmopolitan, then it would be an adaption of a Daisy rather than a Kamikaze.

One version of the creation of this popular drink credits the accomplishment to the gay community in Provincetown, Massachusetts.

Bartender Neal Murray says he created the cosmopolitan in 1975 at the Cork & Cleaver steak house in Minneapolis. According to Murray, he added a splash of cranberry juice to a Kamikaze and the first taster declared, "How cosmopolitan." This event supposedly led to the naming of the new beverage.

John Caine is the owner of several popular bars in San Francisco and a cosmopolitan expert. He partially credits the upsurge in cocktails during the 1970s to the Cosmo being served at fern bars. Caine is credited with bringing the Cosmo west from Cleveland.

There are a number of other claims made as to the origin of the cosmopolitan. Cocktail historian Gary Regan credits bartender Cheryl Cook of the Strand Restaurant in South Beach, Florida with the original creation. Some people think that Cook is a mythical character, but in a letter to Regan, Cook related the story of how she created the drink in 1985 or 1986:

What overwhelmed me was the number of people who ordered Martinis just to be seen with a Martini glass in their hand. It was on this realization that gave me the idea to create a drink that everyone could palate and was visually stunning in that classic glass. This is what the Cosmo was based on.
Cook's original recipes called for "Absolut Citron, a splash of Triple sec, a drop of Rose's lime and just enough cranberry to make it oh so pretty in pink." Although Absolut Citron was not introduced anywhere officially until 1988, it was test marketed in Miami.

Notable bartender Gaz Regan says that the internationally recognized version of the cocktail was created by Toby Cecchini & Melissa Huffsmith-Roth in 1989 At The Odeon restaurant in Manhattan based on a poorly described version of Cheryl Cook's creation.

Cheryl Charming details the story of how in 1989 at The Odeon restaurant, the internationally recognized version of The Cosmopolitan was created by Toby Cecchini & Melissa Huffsmith-Roth.

According to Sally Ann Berk and Bob Sennett, the cosmopolitan appears in literature as early as 1993 and derives from New York City.

Whatever its origin, the cosmopolitan gained popularity in the 1990s. It was further popularized among young women by its frequent mention on the television program Sex and the City, where Sarah Jessica Parker's character, Carrie Bradshaw, commonly ordered the drink when out with her girlfriends. The film adaptation made a reference to its popularity when Miranda asks why they stopped drinking them, Carrie replies "because everyone else started."

Personality: Tianxiath is a man of exceeding refinement. He has many leather bound records, and his wallow smells of rich mahogany. Or it would, if it smelled the way he imagines that it should! Don't let any of that take away from the most important thing: Tianxiath himself. He is, and has been, and always will be the very best of the best. A blue among blues, he holds himself in high esteem. He is ready and willing to tell everyone about his favorite pursuits, and shall listen with only a modicum of interest to anything they might have to say in return.

But he is a dragon of the world! He is aware and emulates all of the latest trends from Igen and Ista, from Benden, and Fort! If there can be said to be a fashion among dragonkind, Tianxiath is already a wind of it. He might even be sporting it. Perhaps he even set it himself. A jolly fellow, if a trifle high on himself, Tianxiath will have no trouble at all making shallow acquaintanceships, although how long they'll last is purely a matter of how long the other parties can tolerate his overweening pride.

The world is his oyster, and he fully intends to wring every last bit of enjoyment and indulgence out of it. If others might judge him for it, clearly that is their mistake. Relax, sit back, and live life to the fullest! You only live once, and Tianxiath is bound and determined to live it up. What he doesn't like so much is the fact that there is all of this duty in his way. Why can't he lounge about and bury himself in pretties from all over Pern? It's certainly not fair that everything cannot simply be handed to him, as he certainly deserves it.

Positive Traits: Cosmopolitan, ambitious, confident
Negative Traits: Indulgent, hedonistic, indolent

Egg: A small purple galaxy egg.

Adult Size: 33'
Physical Attributes: An excessively large blue, Tianxiath is surprisingly fit for how lazy he is... probably due to his tendency to throw himself up into every Flight that comes his way.

Additional Notes: If there is one thing that can get Tianxiath off of his ledge, it is the promise of a good time as represented by a Flight. Blue, green, brown, bronze, gold... it doesn't matter, so long as Tianxiath is smothering himself in adoration. Namely, the adoration of others who can croon into his headknobs about what a man he is. And he is that, for it is to be noted that his Flight partners tend to go away happy indeed. If a little fed up with him.

Impression Effect: Tianxiath will immediately impart animal magnetism on Aerden along with a certain suave sophistication that is difficult to describe. There's just something about his air that is so... je ne sais quoi. A refinement inexplicable and appealing.

Why Me? Aerden needs more good times in his life, according to a certain blue dragon. Tianxiath is an unrelenting hedonist, and he is determined to spend the rest of his days wallowing in the sheers pleasures of life! However, he does need Aerden's dedication and selflessness to recenter him around his true purpose as a dragon of Pern. They are each other's balance, pure and simple. If Tianxiath adds a touch of class and sophistication to his rider, so much the better! Although Aerden balks at ambition, it is his dragon's destiny to climb, climb, climb to the top. Together they will thrive. Equal and opposing forces or yoked together, they possess qualities that will assure them the success that Tianxiath is so sure they richly deserve - if Aerden can keep Tianxiath from showboating his life away.

Origin of Name: The Valencia orange (typically available starting in March and continuing through September or so) is named for the city of Valencia in Spain, although its actual origins are unknown. Valued for their high juice content and availability outside of the typical citrus season, Valencia oranges are usually thin-skinned and have a few seeds. They are considered one of the best oranges for juicing.

Inspiration: Mimosa

A mimosa cocktail is composed of champagne (or other sparkling wine) and chilled citrus juice, usually orange juice unless otherwise specified. It is traditionally served in a tall champagne flute at brunch, at weddings, or as part of business or first class service on some passenger railways and airlines.

The cocktail is named after the yellow-flowered mimosa plant, Acacia dealbata. The combination of sparkling wine and orange juice has been consumed for centuries in Spain, especially where oranges and cava and other sparkling wines are plentiful, for example in Valencia, Castellón, Alicante and Catalonia. Sparkling wine was also consumed with the juice of apples, grapes, and other fruits. There are several mistaken theories of its origin. One such theory is that it was invented approximately in the year 1900 in a hotel in the Mediterranean.

Cocktail historians generally agree that the Mimosa is just a slightly lower-octane version of the Buck’s Fizz, created by 1921 at Buck’s Club in London by barman Pat McGarry. This drink is also made with champagne and orange juice, but with a larger quantity of the wine. The Mimosa gets its name from the Mimosa flower, aka Acacia dealbata, a yellow-orange species of Australian shrub popular with French gardeners. Like most classic cocktails and many popular American dishes, there are a lot of legends regarding the true origins of the mimosa.

The Mimosa may have come along four years later, when a bartender called Frank Meier created it in the Ritz Hotel in Paris. His drink was a slightly more diluted version of the Buck’s Fizz, with equal measures of both ingredients, however, he never actually took the credit for the cocktail, despite mentioning it in his book, Artistry of Mixing Drinks.

Some suggest that the drink was actually created in San Francisco by none other than Sir Alfred Hitchcock, who is thought to have made it in the 1940’s. While this is a less likely story, he certainly helped to popularise the drink in the US, making it the staple brunch drink that it is today.

There are so many versions of its origin that its authorship is also attributed to the famous creator of brunch cocktails. Diego Humberto Pereira. Given its ingredients (which we will discuss below), one could also think of a more Mediterranean origin. More specifically, the region of Valencia, Castellón, Alicante and Catalonia. There, orange crops and the strong tradition of producing cava (very similar to champagne) led to the combination of the two drinks centuries ago. Being able to assume this combination known as Valence water, ancestor of the mimosa cocktail.

Personality: Never has there quite been a dragon that walks on sunshine quite like Alenciath! Bright and happy, she walks with the utmost pep in her step no matter what may be happening around her. This green makes it her personal mission to bring cheer to all those around her -- her clutchmates, candidates, even her wingmates! -- everyone in her path is open to the cheer and bright words that Alenciath radiates. This dragon is a hard-worker, never shying away from a challenge. But she does so with a bright blue swirl to her eyes and a hop to her step. This little girl loves to rope others into her social group, radiating sunshine and kind words all over all those she can adore.

However, she tends to have a rather rosy-colored view about life. Even in the face of bad news or injury, Alenciath will find that shimmering silver lining to every problem, no matter how thin. This little sweetie refuses to see the bad in anyone, person or dragon. It makes her quite susceptible to those who might take Alenciath for a ride, when she refuses to see if someone may not have the best interests for her the first or ninth time. However, her positive sight has shifted, it’s very easy for Alenciath to fall into a bit of a despair.

Alenciath is always perpetually on the go, go, go. Her rider will certainly have quite a handful when she’s just a hatchling, and will have to focus that energy so she doesn’t find herself bored. When boredom strikes, Alenciath will do her best to busy herself -- going as far to invent games or find some curious corner of the Weyr to investigate -- and while she may not intend to cause mischief, sometimes her games can get a bit out of claw. Particularly when she’s bored, Alenciath will try to rope anyone she can into playing with her. It’s hard for her to refuse that someone wouldn’t want to play, and roping someone into her game until they finally play along isn’t out of her wheelhouse. Alenciath can be quite pushy to get her way, and it will take her rider to mettle down some of her attitude so her pushy attitude doesn’t get the better of her once she’s an adult.

This little green certainly lives for today, and each morning Alenciath lives each day to the fullest that she’s able to. The future is never a concern when she’d rather busy herself with thoughts of the present. In fact, Alenciath doubles down stubbornly when someone tries to get her to focus on the future. Why should she worry about flaming thread when she has a perfectly good wherry to eat?

Positive Traits: Effervescent, Happy-Go-Lucky, Energetic
Negative Traits: Rose-Colored, Headstrong, Pushy

Egg: A small pink striped egg.

Adult Size: 19’
Physical Attributes: Alenciath is a delicate creature, always touching on the small side all her life. Her tail is long and thin, almost whip-like, as her neck is thin and delicate. The shape of her head is pointed more at the muzzle tip, lending to a more arrow-like shape. Her eyes are wide, lending to the very innocent nature of this sweet green. Her headknobs are a touch too long and thicker, lending to a youthful look even after she’s reached adulthood. While her wings are delicate, there’s no doubt how large they are. Her wide sails will make her a great distance flier, and help to conserve energy once she’s up in the air. However, Alenciath will find that sharper turns mid-air will be a bit of a challenge at first.

Additional Notes: Flights are a wonderful thing to Alenciath’s mind. Whether it’s chasing or rising, she absolutely loves to have a grand time in the air. Even if she has a mate, Alenciath will enjoy being a frequent riser, waiting until she feels everything is right before joining the air -- or when another green rises, she can happily chase after. Having a reputation as a bit of a tail chaser never stops her, not when she can cheerfully adore in either direction.

Though Alenciath has a hard time looking ahead, once she’s in thread-fighting mode, she rises to fight eagerly with a joy to her eyes and hearts. Defending Pern is an honor, and what is searing thread from the sky but another game? The only downside is she lacks the stamina of browns and bronzes, and is only able to fight for half a fall -- had she her way, she’d happily stay in the air the whole time!

When it comes to love, it can be a surprisingly tricky thing for Alenciath. She tends to throw her whole self into a crush, but with her rather rosy view, she can crush on a dragon who may not have her best interests at heart. Yet she will be devoted to any that returns her feelings, though there may be some disconnection with Alenciath’s pure joy of flights.

Impression Effect: Fahn will gain a bit more consideration for others boundaries and needs. It might not be obvious right away--but caring for another living, breathing, being (and having them live in your head) will force her to think a little bit more than she might once have. This might also rub off on Alenciath in due time.... or not. More immediately, Fahn will be absolutely radiant. There's just something about her... and it's the clear glow of finding ones soulmate and beloved.

Why Me? Fahn and Alenciath make a perfect pair. To start, Fahn has the drive to keep up with this energetic green--and that's something that drew Alencieth immediately. She doesn't want someone who will slow her down or struggle to keep up with her. Together, these too will certainly have the drive to keep pushing when the going gets tough, and will be able to pick up the slack when some of their fellows begin to wear down. On the flipside, both rider and dragon are known to be headstrong and pushy. When Fahn and Alenciath are on the same page, it very well can be a bit like fire and gasoline; these two can become almost insufferable, pushing others into things they might not want. But there might also be times where dragon or rider sees what the other is doing, or they might well disagree on a course of action. This can help temper that sort of forceful behavior...or put the two at odds until some sort of ground is given. Ultimately, Fahn and Alenciath will need to learn to compromise, or grow into some self-awareness. Where Fahn is resilient, Alenciath will buoy that outlook with her rose-colored regard. Everything will turn out all right in the end, and there is absolutely nothing these two can't do together. Alenciath loves Fahn with all her hearts, and will be her best friend, and closest companion. They are each others support, and can learn to become each others brake; but no matter what, they will always be perfect for one another.

Origin of Name: From the liqueur curacao, a type of orange liqueur used in the creation of a Mai Tai.

Inspiration: Mai Tai

The Mai Tai is a cocktail based on rum, Curaçao liqueur, orgeat syrup, and lime juice, associated with Polynesian-style settings.

Victor J. Bergeron claimed to have invented the Mai Tai in 1944 at his restaurant, Trader Vic's, in Oakland, California. Trader Vic's forerunner, Donn Beach, claimed to have instead first created it in 1933, although a longtime colleague said that Beach was actually just alleging that the Mai Tai was based on his Q.B. Cooler cocktail. Don the Beachcomber's recipe is more complex than that of Vic's and some believe tastes quite different. Others believe that despite the difference in ingredients that they taste quite similar.

The name was allegedly taken from maita'i, the Tahitian word for "good" or "excellence", although the drink is usually spelled as two words, sometimes hyphenated or capitalized.

Most current recipes for Mai Tais based on Trader Vic's 1944 recipe include rum, lime juice, orgeat syrup, and orange liqueur (typically orange curaçao). Variants may include the addition of amaretto, falernum, bitters, grenadine, orange and grapefruit juices, and so on. Various books from Victor Bergeron described using rum from Jamaica as well as from Martinique, which in modern usage is a Rhum Agricole. As noted in Smuggler's Cove by Martin Cate and Rebecca Cate, the Martinique rums used by Bergeron in the 1950s were most certainly not agricole rums. Overproof rums are sometimes added to make stronger versions, but Cate says references to such use as being from "the old way" was only because a 151 proof (75%) demerara float was the preferred variation of a frequent elderly customer.

The Mai Tai became such a popular cocktail in the 1950s–60s that many restaurants, particularly tiki-themed restaurants or bars, served them. The Mai Tai was also prominently featured in the Elvis Presley film Blue Hawaii.
The Mai Tai is the usual drink of the character Frannie Halcyon in the Armistead Maupin book series, "Tales of the City".

Today, the Mai Tai is synonymous with Tiki culture both past and present.

As of 2008, Trader Vic's Restaurant chain began to open small establishments called Mai Tai Bars that primarily serve cocktails and pupus (appetizers).

Personality: A mellow green with a surprisingly spicy side, Curacaoth doesn't like to start arguments, but by Faranth, once started? She will end them. In a normal situation, she is the sole of kindness and good will. However, let someone get on her bad side, bam! A zinger out of nowhere, and a great show of wounded reproach from the lady in question. It is not difficult to gain Curacaoth's forgiveness, however, and it is handed out with every inch of sincerity from the green... and perhaps a trifle embarrassment at the necessity in the first place.

She has big hearts, and is a tender, loving creature. Never let it be said that Curacaoth wouldn't go above and beyond for anyone. A friend in need is a friend indeed, as the saying goes. If it were possible, Curacaoth would be friends with absolutely everyone. It is, alas, not possible, and that fact wounds the green to her soul. Short term fits of anger and piqué are not held onto... unlike some others that might be named.

Inclined to shyness, there is every evidence that Curacaoth would dearly love to be at the center of things. If only she could get past the hurdle of her own anxiety, she might try to be as flashy and sparkly as some of her siblings. However, her every attempt has left her feeling very much the fool. Not everyone can be so confident as they are, after all, and though she'd like to join them at their own games it simply isn't in her. Instead, Curacaoth will simply watch wistfully from the sidelines, hopeful that someone might come join her there.

Deep, deep down Curacaoth is a brave soul. Although she might be initially timid, she is capable of standing up to even the worst of bullies. If it takes her a little bit of time to work up to it, then so be it. For she will show her true hearts in the heat of battle, momentarily casting aside her fear in the face of the enemy. Indeed, Curacaoth is a fierce warrior on the inside, however frightened she might be. What is courage, indeed, but action in the face of terrible fear? Doing the right thing does not come with any great difficulty to this green, but she may tremble along the way all the same.

Positive Traits: Forgiving, friendly, kind
Negative Traits: Bashful, short-tempered, shy

Egg: A medium spotted green egg.

Adult Size: 26'
Physical Attributes: A largeish green, Curacaoth nevertheless manages to take up as little space as possible. She is painfully shy, and tends to hide behind enormous wings. If anyone did manage to take a peek at her eyes, they would notice that they are often blue tinged with yellow.

Additional Notes: Curacaoth's friendliness can be mistaken at times for flirtatiousness, which it isn't meant to be. A wallflower, she will suffer quite a lot in trying to get up the courage to confess her hearts to anyone she truly admires. Although large, she does not have the stamina one might expect at her size.

Impression Effect: Where before Vodex merely gave the seeming of confidence, he will now possess it in droves. This effect can be considered +20 bravery, though it is tempered with increased compassion. As so many others before him, Vodex now can lay claim to that undeniable quality all dragonriders seem to own, which will help him as he starts off his new life.

Why Me? Vodex and Curacaoth have much in common, though it may not seem so at first blush. Curacaoth has a strong desire to be the center of attention and Vodex is the center of attention - the fact that he is so due to his loud nature does not trouble Curacaoth in the slightest. Whatever flaws Vodex thinks he possesses, Curacaoth loves and adores him, and will overlook and forgive each and every one. For all that Vodex is trying to give off the impression of confidences, his bravado is an excellent complement to the green's fragile bravery: they will draw strength from each other and find great comfort in one another. She can give him every bit of the attention that he so craves, and in turn can lean upon him when she feels afraid.

Origin of Name: From guarapo, the cane sugar used in the creation of mojitos.

Inspiration: Mojito

Mojito (/moʊˈhiːtoʊ/; Spanish: [moˈxito]) is a traditional Cuban highball. Traditionally, a mojito is a cocktail that consists of five ingredients: white rum, sugar (traditionally sugar cane juice), lime juice, soda water, and mint. Its combination of sweetness, citrus, and herbaceous mint flavors is intended to complement the rum, and has made the mojito a popular summer drink.

When preparing a mojito, fresh lime juice is added to sugar (or to simple syrup) and mint leaves. The mixture is then gently mashed with a muddler. The mint leaves should only be bruised to release the essential oils and should not be shredded. Then rum is added and the mixture is briefly stirred to dissolve the sugar and to lift the mint leaves up from the bottom for better presentation. Finally, the drink is topped with crushed ice and sparkling soda water. Mint leaves and lime wedges are used to garnish the glass.

The mojito is one of the most famous rum-based highballs. There are several versions of the mojito.

Havana, Cuba, is the birthplace of the mojito, although its exact origin is the subject of debate. It was known that the local South American Indians had remedies for various tropical illnesses, so a small boarding party went ashore on Cuba and came back with ingredients for an effective medicine. The ingredients were aguardiente de caña (translated as "burning water", a crude form of rum made from sugar cane) mixed with local tropical ingredients: lime, sugarcane juice, and mint. Lime juice on its own would have significantly prevented scurvy and dysentery, and tafia/rum was soon added as it became widely available to the British (ca. 1650). Mint, lime and sugar were also helpful in hiding the harsh taste of this spirit. While this drink was not called a mojito at this time, it was the original combination of these ingredients.

Some historians contend that African slaves who worked in the Cuban sugar cane fields during the 19th century were instrumental in the cocktail's origin. Guarapo, the sugar cane juice often used in mojitos, was a popular drink among the slaves who named it. It never originally contained lime juice.

There are several theories behind the origin of the name mojito: one such theory holds that name relates to mojo, a Cuban seasoning made from lime and used to flavour dishes. Another theory is that the name Mojito is simply a derivative of mojadito (Spanish for "a little wet" ), the diminutive of mojado ("wet" ).

The mojito has routinely been presented as a favorite drink of author Ernest Hemingway. It has also often been said that Hemingway made the bar called La Bodeguita del Medio famous when he became one of its regulars and wrote "My mojito in La Bodeguita, My daiquiri in El Floridita" on a wall of the bar. This epigraph, handwritten and signed in his name, persists despite doubts expressed by Hemingway biographers about such patronage and the author's taste for mojitos. La Bodeguita del Medio is better known for its food than its drink.

A survey by an international market research company found that in 2016 the mojito was the most popular cocktail in Britain and France.

Personality: If you were to open up a dictionary, Guarath's name would fall directly under the definition of the word "high maintenance." She is a very needy dragon, and demands the upmost from anyone close to her. From her rider, she will expect nonstop attention and care, and it had better be the best of care! Future lovers beware, for Guarath will not only be inclined to a slow burn, but also expectations mountains high. This pile of issues and demands is just one temper tantrum away from shattering friendships at any moment.

One might say that Guarath has a slow fuse, but one would be wrong. Explosively angry when she is set off, Guarath's rage is verrrry slow to cool. Unfortunately, her affections cool much more swiftly. Her good opinion, once lost, may almost never be regained. She is proud, self-centered, and very, very picky. If you were to ask Guarath why that is, she would simply say that she has high standards. At least she's not a hypocrite and she does hold herself to the self-same standards. If anything, she might actually be a little more harsh with herself when she falls short of her own expectations.

When it comes to friendships, this is not your green. Oh don't get her wrong, she'll try her best, but she has such a temper that even her nearest and dearest might get burned if they aren't exceptionally careful. It's a good thing that she's so focused on herself or it would probably pain her when relationships almost inevitably shattered. Who cares what anyone else thinks? Guarath is here for herself first, and others second. She's never been a people pleaser and doesn't intend to start anytime soon. Huff.

One thing that is certain about Guarath is that she does not like relying on others. She is intensely independent, and doesn't like to be seen as weak. If she feels like she is giving off the appearance of weakness, she will do everything she can to either conceal it or shed it. Perhaps it is due to her small size that she feels that way, but whatever the reason this proud lady will never admit when she needs help. Not even if pressed. She is self-reliant and doesn't want to anyone to think less of her.

Positive Traits: Genuine, meticulous, top shelf
Negative Traits: Temperamental, exacting, high-maintenance

Egg: A small pink striped green egg.

Adult Size: 18'
Physical Attributes: Small but mighty, Guarath is long in tail and neck, with slightly stubby wings. That last bit frustrates her immensely, but she can't help what she was hatched to be.

Additional Notes: If anyone were to get past Guarath's many flaws, she is a true friend indeed. Any lover need not fear that she would look elsewhere... at least when said lover continued to meet her standards and demands. Nothing pleases her quite so much as her rider's attention, and she will seek after it relentlessly.

Impression Effect: Upon Impression, Lyfrocier will receive -10 awkwardness and plus 20 confidence. He may not always walk around the Weyr with a swagger, but if he did he would be well entitled, as far as Guarath is concerned! Take that, doubters.

Why Me? Lyfrocier possesses many qualities that Guarath admires, including an ability to readily navigate the niceties of formal social situations. Everything he does is deliberate, mirroring the green's meticulous nature. If anyone could love her warts and all, she believes it might well be Lyfrocier. But he needn't fear his own failures any longer, for Guarath will sweep them away. As loathe as she is to confront her own, she simply does not believe them in her rider. No, Lyfrocier is top shelf, just like Guarath, thank you. Anyone who doesn't understand that isn't worth their time.

Origin of Name: From the Greek rhodon, meaning rose. Julep is derived from the Persian word meaning rosewater, though the form julep is old French.

Inspiration: Mint Julep

The mint julep is a mixed alcoholic drink, or cocktail, consisting primarily of bourbon, sugar, water, crushed or shaved ice, and fresh mint. As a bourbon-based cocktail, it is associated with the American South and the cuisine of the Southern United States in general, and the Kentucky Derby in particular.

A mint julep is traditionally made with four ingredients: mint leaf, bourbon, simple syrup, and crushed ice. Traditionally, spearmint is the mint of choice used in Southern states, and in Kentucky in particular. Proper preparation of the cocktail is commonly debated, as methods may vary considerably from one bartender to another. The mint julep may be considered a member of a loosely associated family of drinks called "smashes" (the brandy smash is another example, as well as the mojito), in which fresh mint and other ingredients are muddled or crushed in preparation for flavoring the finished drink. The step further releases essential oils and juices into the mixture, intensifying the flavor from the added ingredient or ingredients.

Traditionally, mint juleps were often served in silver or pewter cups, and held only by the bottom and top edges of the cup. This allows frost to form on the outside of the cup. Traditional hand placement may have arisen as a way to reduce the heat transferred from the hand to the silver or pewter cup. Today, mint juleps are most commonly served in a tall old-fashioned glass, Collins glass, or highball glass with a straw.

The term "julep" is generally defined as a sweet drink, particularly one used as a vehicle for medicine. The word itself is derived from the Spanish "julepe", from Spanish Arabic, and this from the Persian word گلاب (Golâb), meaning rosewater. English juleps, as opposed to later American mint julep, were primarily medicinal, lightly alcoholic, and often contained camphor.

The mint julep originated in the southern United States, probably during the eighteenth century. The earliest known mentions come from 1770 and include a satirical play by Robert Munford, The Candidate, (where a drunkard character “Mr. Julip” appears), and "A Short Poem on Hunting" (which describes julep as a concoction "Which doctors storm at, and which some adore" ) published in the Williamsburg Virginia Gazette. Further evidence of mint julep as a prescription drink can be found in 1784 Medical communications: "sickness at the stomach, with frequent retching, and, at times, a difficulty of swallowing. I then prescribed her an emetic, some opening powders, and a mint julep."

In 1793 Rev. Harry Toulmin described mint julep as “a tumbler of rum and water, well sweetened, with a slip of mint in it.”. An appearance of a mint julep in print came in a book by John Davis published in London in 1803, where it was described as "a dram of spirituous liquor that has mint steeped in it, taken by Virginians of a morning." Davis' interviewee mentions his love for whiskey came from his daily preparation of the drink.

Virginia taverns such as J. Pryor’s Haymarket Inn in Richmond began including ice-houses (possibly for the iced cocktails too) in their infrastructure in the 1780s, and the first mention of "Iced Julep" appears on May 4, 1807, in an advertisement for the Wig-Wam Gardens in Norfolk. Besides taverns, cocktails, including juleps, were routinely enjoyed by the rich, who would have them prepared by their slaves.

U.S. Senator Henry Clay of Kentucky introduced the drink to Washington, D.C., at the Round Robin Bar in the famous Willard Hotel during his residence in the city.

Americans enjoyed not only bourbon-based juleps during the nineteenth century, but also gin-based juleps made with genever, an aged gin.
By 1820, the julep was a legacy in Virginia and had been adopted as an item of local identity. The first acknowledged master of mint juleps was Jasper Crouch from Richmond, who identified himself as a Free Person of Color.
In the 1830s in New York was known a version known as "hailstone" julep or "hailstorm" julep, which included small "hailstones" or pounded small lumps of ice.

British captain Frederick Marryat's 1840 book Second Series of A Diary in America describes on page 41 the "real mint julep" thus:
There are many varieties of Mint Julep, such as those composed of Claret, Madeira, &c.; but the ingredients of the real mint-julep are as follows. I learnt how to make them, and succeeded pretty well. Put into a tumbler about a dozen sprigs of the tender shoots of mint, upon them put a spoonful of white sugar, and equal proportions of peach and common brandy, so as to fill it up one-third, or perhaps a little less. Then take rasped or pounded ice, and fill up the tumbler. Epicures rub the lips of the tumbler with a piece of fresh pine-apple, and the tumbler itself is very often incrusted outside with stalactites of ice. As the ice melts, you drink.

The 1862 edition of Bar-Tenders Guide: How to Mix Drinks or The Bon-Vivant's Companion by Jerry Thomas includes five recipes for the mint julep (as well as an illustration of how it is to be served) allowing for either Cognac, brandy, gin, whiskey or sparkling Moselle. Thomas states of the mint julep, "... a peculiarly American beverage ... It was later introduced into England by Captain Maryatt."

A holiday "Jingle Bell Julep" which uses macerated strawberry, cherries and raspberry instead of a mint base at the Round Robin Bar
In 1916, the traditional Virginia recipe as served at the "Old White" is described:

"... the famous old barroom, which was approached by a spiral staircase. Here in this dark, cool room, scented with great masses of fragrant mint that lay upon mountains of crushed ice, in the olden days were created the White Sulphur mint julep and the Virginia toddy, for which this place was famous the world over. The mint juleps were not the composite compounds of the present day. They were made of the purest French brandy, limestone water, old-fashioned cut loaf sugar, crushed ice, and young mint the foliage of which touched your ears ..."

Recently, however, bourbon-based juleps have decisively eclipsed gin-based juleps.

Personality: How kind of you to come! Rhodonth is simply ecstatic to be in your good company... or so she would have you believe. There is absolutely no mistaking the fact that very few meet this green's very high standards. She has been known to cast insult with a smile, and in the most charming manner imaginable. One might never guess that she's casting shade, but make no mistake about it, you're not worthy. Rather than be so gauche as to spell it out for the listener, however, Rhodonth will let them pick up on the many hints of her displeasure that she'll ever so graciously leave.

Her name means no, her number means no, no, no, no, no, no. Don't think that just because she's allowed you into her vicinity that you are in her confidences! She is very, very choosy with whom she allows close to her, although she gives every appearance of being friends with absolutely everyone, darling. In her opinion, a true lady would never allow anyone to know who she holds in enmity, so don't expect her to come right out and say it. Although she has a quick and clever tongue, it's used in the most carefully precise manner imaginable.

She is a very lofty creature, indulging herself in any number of intellectual pursuits, though she doesn't like anyone to know of it. Rhodonth would far rather that everyone underestimated her, so that she can remain one step ahead of her competition. And don't even think that you aren't competition, because everyone is. Whether she ever stops competing is a question for the ages, and if dragons were inclined to gambling, she would be right up there with the best of them.

Positive Traits: Regal, clever, refined
Negative Traits: Old-fashioned, puffed up, competitive

Egg: A medium golden flourish egg.

Adult Size: 18'
Physical Attributes: A delicate green with an absolutely charming visage. Although well proportioned she can be inclined toward roundness in the middle. Soft and sweet on the outside, but only there.

Additional Notes: Rhodonth is looking for the perfect life partner, and don't expect her to just settle for the first lady or gentleman that comes her way. She is inclined to be choosy, and rightfully so. Especially quick in the air, she has an average flame length.

Impression Effect: Alcoholism is a thing of the past. Rhodonth did not approve of it, and removed every trace of Vimeran's addition upon Impression. Let it be known, also, that Vimeran cuts quite a handsome and distinguished figure, as befits Rhodonth's rider.

Why Me? Vimeran might have little experience with luxury living, but Rhodonth is about to change that - what could be better than her presence, after all? While she is traditional in some ways, she does believe that she and Hers deserve to be at the pinnacle of Western society. Stubbornly refusing to be anything less than a queen-in-green, this little lady was drawn by Vimeran's honorable ways. He is a gentleman, and nothing less than a gentleman could have drawn her eyes permanently - although it is to be noted that she enjoys a handsome rake in her private hearts. For her bondmate nothing but the best would do, and she has determined that Vimeran possesses those qualities which she finds most important. He needn't fear overthrowing the Weyr, for their Weyr is now Western Weyr - and they can and should rise as high as possible together.

Origin of Name: Rioja is a wine region in northern Spain and is the traditional red wine that is used as the base of your standard sangria.

Inspiration: Sangria

Sangria is an alcoholic beverage from Spain.

A punch, sangria traditionally consists of red wine and chopped fruit, often with other ingredients or spirits.

Sangria is one of the most popular drinks in Spanish cuisine. It is commonly served in bars, restaurants, and chiringuitos, and at festivities throughout Portugal and Spain.

Sangría literally means bloodletting in Spanish. The term sangria used for the drink can be traced back to the 18th century. According to the SAGE Encyclopedia of Alcohol, sangria's origins "cannot be pinpointed exactly, but early versions were popular in Spain, Greece, and England."

Sangaree, a predecessor drink to sangria that was served either hot or cold, likely originated in the Caribbean (West Indies), and from there was introduced to mainland America, where it was common beginning in the American colonial era but "largely disappeared in the United States" by the early twentieth century. Sangria as an iced drink was reintroduced to the U.S. by the late 1940s through Hispanic Americans and Spanish restaurants, and enjoyed greater popularity with the 1964 World's Fair in New York.

Under European Union law, the use of sangria in commercial or trade labeling is now restricted under geographical labeling rules.

The European Parliament approved new labeling laws by a wide margin in January 2014, protecting indications for aromatized drinks, including sangria, Vermouth and Glühwein. Only sangria made in Spain and Portugal is allowed to be sold as "sangria" in the EU; sangria made elsewhere must be labeled as such (e.g., as "German sangria" or "Swedish sangria" ).

The definition of sangria under European Union law from the 2014 Regulation states that it is an:

Aromatized wine-based drink
—which is obtained from wine,
—which is aromatised with the addition of natural citrus-fruit extracts or essences, with or without the juice of such fruit,
—to which spices may have been added,
—to which carbon dioxide may have been added,
—which has not been coloured,
—which have an actual alcoholic strength by volume of not less than 4,5 % vol., and less than 12 % vol., and
—which may contain solid particles of citrus-fruit pulp or peel and its colour must come exclusively from the raw materials used.

‘Sangría’ or ‘Sangria’ may be used as a sales denomination only when the product is produced in Spain or Portugal. When the product is produced in other Member States, ‘Sangría’ or ‘Sangria’ may only be used to supplement the sales denomination ‘aromatised wine-based drink’, provided that it is accompanied by the words: ‘produced in …’, followed by the name of the Member State of production or of a more restricted region.
— Regulation (EU) No 251/2014 of 26 February 2014

The 2014 Regulation also recognises Clarea as an aromatised wine-based drink, which is obtained from white wine under the same conditions as for Sangría. ‘Clarea’ may be used as a sales denomination only when the product is produced in Spain. When the product is produced in other Member States, ‘Clarea’ may only be used to supplement the sales denomination ‘aromatised wine-based drink’, provided that it is accompanied by the words: ‘produced in …’, followed by the name of the Member State of production or of a more restricted region.

Personality: If you're ready to relax and have a good time, Riojath is the right dragon for the job. She can be found snoozing in the sun or enjoying a lengthy bath in her free time, soaking in the peace and happiness of being with friends and loved ones while sharing stories and laughs. Riojath is at her best when she's with others and thrives off social interaction, which is probably the only reason she can be talked into lessons. It takes a lot to rile Riojath up, even when someone is actively trying to push her buttons, and any irritation that does build up usually rolls right off her shoulders. There is such a thing as too easy-going, though, and Riojath tests that limit frequently. She dislikes physical activity and much prefers to have her siblings or rider do things for her. Training can be a struggle after a certain point and if she knows there's a big workout in store for her she's quite reluctant to get moving. A bit of love from her rider can usually coax her into being active but they will need to have a firm hand and not let her take advantage of them.

A social butterfly, Riojath finds it easy to get along with just about everyone. She knows just what stories will bring a shy dragon out of their shell or what jokes will make a stony-faced Wingleader smile. She has a knack for reading someone's mood and shifting her own to match their energy level, rarely stepping on toes or making a social faux pas. Riojath has friends in every circle within the weyr and she likes being able to greet just about anyone she sees by name, whether or not they're riders or dragons. It takes all types to make a Weyr run and she loves to chat with the cooks, the children, and the healers as well as the Candidates and riders that she sees so frequently. Having her nose in so many places leaves her quite prone to the rumor mill and if there's a new scandal in the Weyr you know Riojath has all the details. She loves a good, juicy story and is terrible at keeping secrets. Since she has so many contacts of her own she can quickly verify a story to find out if it's true and, if it is, can usually gather up new tidbits of information to spread around. Her little habit has the chance to come back to bite her if she's not careful, so her rider best keep an ear on whatever rumors she's spreading.

Nothing makes Riojath happier than love. Platonic love, romantic love, familial love, it's all so warm and wonderful and grand! She gives her love freely to any who want or need it - even those who think they don't - and is always there to console or comfort someone who needs a little extra attention. At her core she is a caring, maternal creature who thrives off of seeing others made happy and whole and she is always there to support anyone who needs it. She loves children and weyrlings especially and will gladly lavish attention on them whenever she has the chance. Because she is so free with her affection Riojath often leaves a trail of broken hearts behind her. She loves and leaves, always looking for the next dragon to lavish her attention on. While some might try to make her stay she never does, always eager to move on and spread her love and care to someone new. There's a bit of a thrill in it for her as well as she looks for dragons that seem they might be a tough nut to crack, determined to warm everyone's hearts with her own.

Positive Traits: Laid back, charismatic, loving
Negative Traits: Lazy, gossipy, fickle

Egg: Small purple and orange leopard spot egg.

Adult Size: 23.5'
Physical Attributes: Riojath is fairly average in length but certainly tips the scales, weighing in on the heavier side. She is a rotund green, all curves and no angles, but she wears her extra weight proudly. As a young dragon it might pass as baby fat but as she grows it will become apparent that Riojath is a beautiful, soft girl. Nicely proportioned otherwise, Riojath's tail forks have a permanent upward curl, probably due to how she developed in the egg.
Additional Notes: Despite her aversion to physical activity, Riojath hides a surprising amount of strength under her extra padding. Though her stamina is lacking - which is normal for a green - she certainly gets a lot done in the time she has. Her rider best hang on during sharp turns and sudden changes of direction, this girl can pack a punch with how much power is tucked into those tight movements! While fighting Thread she is best at chasing down loose strands that others in her wing may have missed, her impressive flame length helping to eliminate any stragglers.

Riojath loves love and rises frequently, though she rarely lets the same dragon catch her more than once. She likes options, you see, and settling down just isn't for her. There's enough of Riojath to go around and everyone deserves a taste! A shiny gold or bronze hide is a quick way to catch her attention, but her chromatic kin can woo her with a bit of extra work. Color doesn't matter to Riojath in the end, just someone who is looking to have a good time. If she were to settle down whoever her mate is should be open-minded to her flirting with other dragons, or possibly even welcoming a third dragon into the relationship.

Impression Effect: Bionden is going to find herself with a lot more natural charm and an air about her that is partially magnetic, especially when pair with her vanity. Riojath's charm will rub off on her almost immediately.

Why Me? Bionden and Riojath were a perfect match. To start, Bionden's desire to fuss over, and care for younger Candidates and others in need go hand-in-hand with Riojath's loving and comforting nature. The two of them can now perfectly smother all sorts of riders, dragons, littles, Candidates, wingmates, and strangers within the Weyr. With their powers of the heart combined, there is no place to hide from these caring ladies. They are both very approachable, and their clutchmates and wingmates will never struggle to find a friend in them both. Riojath adores being a social creature, and her rider's acceptance and desire to care for so many is a trait that drew her from the start. That said, there are differences that make them a great pair. Bionden is incisive and tends not to waffle when it comes to making quick decisions, while Riojath is notoriously fickle and lazy. While Riojath might sometimes bring out the procrastinator within her rider, Bionden will be able to make decisions and stick with them--even if her dragon starts changing her mind, or decides she hasn't the energy to participate or drive to answer a summons. There will certainly be days where "passable" won't be enough--especially as they progress through their training and face Threadfall. Additionally, Bionden will find less time to dote on others, as this green will eat up a lot of her time. Being lazy and a gossip means that trouble will certainly seek Riojath out as she grows--and it will be up to Bionden to ensure her bonded is getting the love, care, and attention she needs. Ultimately, these two were meant to be from the start, and should make a very welcoming, and loving pair of wingmates.
