Takes place right after --- Wrapping Up Loose Ends

If Lacerta had an inkling that she would have run across a Mauvian after returning from that strange shadow verse maybe she would have been more prepared for what followed. The redheaded senshi of bandages had been trying to recuperate from the ordeal that had started with being yanked unceremoniously into a patch of shadows and promptly spit back out after a long and arduous battle. But that wasn’t important anymore. What her mind was now focused on was finding a certain senshi friend of hers. Sure Acubens wasn’t fighting on the same side that Lacerta was but ever since their last meeting the bandage senshi was feeling perhaps that she was going to be able to commit to joining Acubens’ family. When that moment arrived Lacerta would be ready for it.

But dwelling on that was not what she wanted to do right now. Taking a sharp turn Lacerta moved down quickly into a blind alley. From there she eyed the roof edge above her. Normally she’d never dream of trying to make the leap without due caution but the ginger could feel the untapped energy flowing through her. Gathering herself she pushed off from the ground and landed a few seconds later on the roof she’d been aiming for. Easy as cake.

Though the next idea was the one that she’d been brainstorming for a while. It wouldn’t do to have her running across the city looking for mirrors. Reaching into her subspace pocket the super senshi removed a small compact mirror she’d bought just for this sort of occasion and opened it to reveal a reflection of her face. The tiara on her forehead was going to get some getting used to as was the small cape-like addition to her fuku. She’d been upgraded and there was one person she wished to share the news with first - if she was around. Moving to sit with her back against the roof ledge the super senshi of bandages spoke into the mirror.

“Hey, if you are free to meet Acubens - I want to show you something. Not sure if this mirror idea of ours will actually work or not but I’m crossing my fingers and hoping that no one else comes across me talking to a compact mirror. I’m rooftop bound and near the core downtown area.”

Not knowing what else she could do besides wait Lacerta went back to examining her new appearance. It was going to take some getting used to.

Acubens hadn’t powered up in a long time. Too much had changed. Too much had gone to s**t and then come back together. And then fallen back apart. And then… come back together… Just thinking about it made Acubens tired. Sure, Misha still wasn’t really talking to her, and when he did it was very guarded and strained but… he was talking to her. And for the time being, that was going to have to be enough for her.

Things will never be like they used to. They can’t be.

She had known that her brother was right but… that didn’t stop the sting that still struck her when she thought about his return just a few weeks ago.

She swallowed her pain for the thousandth time, however, and set herself to work. Previously it had been work at her Market. Setting herself to work doing whatever she could. Maybe more than she could. But now she set herself to work with her Court. Acubens had spent every moment in the last few days that she wasn’t attending to her Market or her girlfriend working on her Realm. Food which could not be grown in the real with, it would seem, were thriving here. This, in turn, meant that she had juicy, ripe tomatoes, strawberries, and other strictly summer produce for her shelves. Her dark mirror workers knew exactly where she was getting these miraculous foods but the rest of the workers and patrons were astounded.

Maybe someday she would be able to bring Misha here…

Acubens paused in her working of the magical earth and wiped her brow. There was no heat in the mirrorscape, but that was also no breeze to cool her. No breeze to rustle the leaves of her garden. It used to off put her but no longer.

“Maybe it’s time for a breather, Acubens,” she muttered, leaning her tools against the Acuben tree she’d grown so long ago.

And so, it was totally by chance that Acubens passed a mirror about the size of a handmirror from which Lacerta was calling her.

“Holy s**t, yeah it totally works!” It was clear that Acubens was as surprised at the success as Lacerta was bound to be. “I’ve got a mirror near that area, I’ll be there in a jiff.”

She had some updates for Lacerta too… though telling her that her brother was back would also mean that she would have to explain the whole painful past…

Popping out on the other side of the mirror, Acubens immediately searched for an ordered signature, finding one that hovered above the rest roaming the streets. The only issue was that it was a bit more powerful than Lacerta was. But it was also the only one in the area on a rooftop… Right away Acubens’ instincts shifted towards preparing for an ambush before she rationalized with herself. No. Lacerta would never do that. Maybe this was someone she wanted her to meet? And she wasn’t sure if this other person would be willing to make the call themselves. But why wasn’t Lacerta with them? She made a bee-line for it, leaping easily from street to ledge.

“Lacerta,” she called, albeit uncertainly, as she landed.

Lacerta was pleasantly surprised to find out that their method of communication worked. It would probably make things easier in the future. Her fingers closed the compact mirror as she tucked it away now that she knew Acubens was on the way. Her ringed finger absently traced the braid that had appeared in her hair after Bernard had performed her upgrade before she focused on the auras around her. It was at times like these when she felt relaxed enough to let down her guard. And even though Acubens had said she’d be there in a jiff it still allowed her to try and get her thoughts in order.

How exactly did it happen with the Velociraptor senshi? Who had upgraded Acubens? Maybe one day the redhead would ask but for now she stood as she picked up on the familiar aura that Acubens and others like her possessed. The aura was of chaos but it was one that Lacerta had found wasn’t bothering her as much anymore. Knowing what the dark mirrors felt like had aided Lacerta in helping out another senshi that had been in trouble.

The faint sound of her name being called, albeit with a hint of caution, brought Lacerta out of her musings. What caused that cautionary hitch in her friend’s voice? Peering around the teen tried to pinpoint what might be going on. Without much success Lacerta sighed and stretched momentarily before calling back out to the Velociraptor senshi. “I’m over here Acubens. It’s okay. I’m alone.”

She briefly wondered at times if it was smart of her to admit being alone out loud where anyone could hear. However she was more powerful now but it wouldn’t mean she’d go looking for trouble.

PostPosted: Thu Jan 23, 2020 4:33 pm

It took Acubens a moment to realize who was standing before her, but once she did, she let out a joyous whoop and gathered Lacerta up into a bear hug.

“Oh, look at you! You just… wow when did this even happen?”

She had to take a physical step back to calm herself down. She took a breath and calmed herself enough to form a coherent thought.

“Okay. First of all, hi. It’s so great to see you again, Lacerta.” Another hug, this time less… well… furious.

“Second of all, congratulations. You look fabulous, you feel powerful, and I’m totally here for it.” This time she slid her arm through Lacerta’s leaning into the other woman affectionately.

“Third, I am so glad to see you settling into your skin. While I would have liked, of course, to see you in… well… a darker color… I’m happy that you’re happy regardless.” she paused then, struck suddenly with how similar hers and Lacerta’s paths were seeming. She recalled her own power up to super, born of desperation and fear. Nothing like it should have been.

“You are… happy… right?”

The force in which Acubens exuded with her ecstatic bear-hug had Lacerta hunching over for a few precious seconds after the initial greeting. Even after she’d managed to heal the worst of her newest battle wounds there was still some lingering tenderness in some areas. She’d been surprised by the strength in which Acubens possessed in her excitement. However, it was only a brief moment of being uncomfortable before she was able to pull away. The moment was cemented in her mind of Acubens openly showing appreciation of her new status and then another, more gentle, hug followed from the Velociraptor senshi.

“Thank you, it’s great to see you again as well. It’s been a little while since we last talked.”

A brief flashback of one of their last meetings had Lacerta almost wincing. That night had not started out as being pleasant for her but when she had needed Acubens … she had come. She grinned ruefully as she accepted the congratulations that were bestowed upon her. Her voice was soft as she admitted a hard truth to herself and her friend.

“I think I believe I’m still in shock from the whole ordeal. I didn’t think this day would ever come. Is it odd to think that?”

Chuckling nervously Lacerta gently leaned into the gentler form of affection that Acubens was showing her before she smoothed down the side of her upgraded fuku with her free arm. It was still hard to believe that she was now a Super Senshi. What had she done to deserve the honor? Certainly it puzzled the teen much more than she’d like to admit. At times during the past she was almost positive that doing so much to deserve being upgraded was a far-off dream. Focusing back on the here and now though Lacerta caught Acubens statement of having wanting to see her in a darker color and she couldn’t help but shrug in response. Wouldn’t that come all in due time? She had technically already verbally committed that she’d be happy to join Acubens family and that the idea had appealed to her.

It was the question that Acubens then posed to her about whether she was happy or not that had Lacerta pausing in thought. She still seemed unsure of her place amongst the world and that bothered her.

“I can’t say for certain whether I’m happy or not,” here the teen paused. “I’m happier that I’m stronger and might be able to protect others more but at the same time I find myself wondering who can I protect? It’s a double-edged sword I think I’ve stumbled across.”

Lacerta glanced around at the lights that filtered up from the streets below.

“As for your first question about when this all happened; I think it’s been just over an hour. I had another,” and here her lips curled in distaste, “wonderful evening courtesy of this city of ours. Those nasty little shadows apparently grabbed a bunch of individuals amongst all factions and spit them into this shadow universe. I didn’t appreciate not being consulted first, that’s for sure. Anyways shadow universe: eerie carnival music, phantom horses and phantom people, eerie spinning ground that rotated like a carousel and don’t forget the giant, fire-breathing dragon … can’t forget or unsee that.”

The bandage senshi paused for a moment before smiling though in remembrance of something. “However it was there that I did meet one of your court though. I think he said his name was Arnica. He felt like you do albeit of a weaker level. Anyway to keep the story short … we helped each other out. After the battle I lost track of him but if I were to guess he got spit back out of the shadow-verse as well.”

Her gaze lowered as she continued, “after everything was said and done, I found myself back in Destiny City pretty banged up from the experience. Using my magic only took the edge off the pain and that’s when I was approached by a Mauvian who, I don’t know, assumed I was ready for advancement. So he upgraded me. He said I was ready but I think at the same time he didn’t like seeing a senshi in pain. Long story short; I’m still a little unsure on things … if that makes any sense.”

God she hoped it did make sense because if it didn't, where would that leave her?
PostPosted: Thu Jan 23, 2020 4:38 pm

Lacerta fell silent and Acubens did her best to read her friend’s expressions. The pause. The hesitation. Was her own path really so similar to Lacerta’s? The story all but confirmed it. A spiriting away, just as Lesath had taken Keren. A desperate plea for more power, more magic, more time to do what she could. It broke Acubens’ heart. It wasn’t an exact echo, but the fingerprints were there.

“Arnica,” Acubens echoed thoughtfully. She didn’t know that one… “That’s a new name to me. Hopefully he treated you well. Didn’t bring shame to the family name.” Though given what she said about them helping one another, it seemed like the interaction had been, at least, civil. Acubens would hate to have to set a new senshi straight first thing.

“But everything you’ve said makes total sense. I don’t think I was truly ready for either of my power ups. And everyone I speak to seems to have the same reaction.” She offered Lacerta a comforting smile and squeezed her arm lightly. “But the powers that be, whatever they are, see more of us than we see of ourselves. We have to trust them. To a certain extent, that is. As for who you can protect, I think you already know that’s a question that only you can answer.” One Acubens struggled to answer herself so many years ago. “Even if it’s only yourself. And there is no shame in only being able to… or hell only wanting to save yourself. That’s just… survival. It’s what we’re all doing.”

Acubens lead the way to the edge of the building and plopped down, dangling her feet over the edge, and patted the cement next to her.

“So, what’s next for Lacerta, Super Senshi of Bandages? Or what else is new? Any adventures that were less terrifying and life threatening?”

Lacerta had nodded at Acubens’ explanation and gave the matter some internal thought as she plopped down beside her friend. There was much she still wasn’t sure about doing but she had a feeling she was sure on where her future path was heading. She was going to come home in a sense. She might not have started out on Acubens’ side but there was no uncertain feeling in Lacerta’s mind that before the year was over that she would have been welcomed home properly. Flicking her gaze around the redhead thought back to the time spent in the shadows. “Nah, I don’t think you need to set Arnica straight. We worked well. There was no animosity between us. I actually think he was expecting me to attack him when I first drew the attention of whatever was going after him. After that though he helped me out in return when I nearly fell into a chasm that had opened in the ground. We stuck close together after that and worked as a team to stay safe.”

She was proud of herself for having the courage to make the first move in that situation without needing to be prompted. “As for if anything else has been odd or unusual. Just the garden variety strangeness that Destiny City loves to spit out at us unsuspecting victims around Halloween. First year those dumb spiders at that maze; then whatever the heck happened last year with those pumpkin invites, and now shadow-verse. Nope. I’m starting to wonder at times about whether or not Destiny City’s on a Hellmouth or something.”

Fingering her ring though had Lacerta wincing in remembrance of another meeting. “Remember when I told you about getting this ring that I wasn’t alone at the time. Well four of us got together for a small information session and let’s just say that it was another fine example of how the White Moon life is. Can’t believe two grown men would start arguing like they did. Needless to say that civil communication is not a strong point amongst those guys once their hackles are raised. I did sort of test this ring out though. I don’t think it acts like the crystals you find in Mirrorspace. I think mine is like another layer of protection that helps me out while in either form. It’s strange to think about it in that sense at times.”

“As for what’s next for little old me. I haven’t really given much thought on the matter. I mean I know where I’d like to be, and I know that things take time, but I really haven’t given up on coming home.
PostPosted: Thu Jan 23, 2020 8:43 pm

If Acubens was being honest, she wasn’t all that surprised with Lacerta’s discription of petty White Moon squabbles. They happened all too often when she was still among their ranks, and it seemed like it was still happening. It was why she valued the small size of their court. Sure, she was always looking for lost souls to bring home, but smaller numbers meant easier communication. Less chance for squabbling and an easier time to hold those who would infight accountable. And if she continued to be honest, she was a little glad for the White Moon infighting. The more time they spent fighting themselves the less time they had to bother the Dark Mirror Court. And that suited Acubens just fine.

As a matter of fact, she couldn't remember the last time she was harried by a white-suited do-gooder. Were they all just busy or what?

Coming home.

Acubens paused in her thoughts, as though her mind was rebooting. Had Lacerta ever said anything like that to her before? Looking back... she couldn't recall ever hearing it. The phrase had a nice ring to it. She liked hearing Lacerta say it. A small smile bloomed to life on her lips as she turned her face to meet her friend's gaze.

"I haven't given up on you coming home either," she said gently, her voice breaking somewhere in the middle. "You just... you say the word and I'll whisk you away to my Prince. Give you a new face, a new name. My name if you'd like it. Something to grow with, so you aren't starting all over alone..." Damn it... she was really getting used to the idea now. If Lacerta were to back out the way she had with Lesath... well... at least now she understood Lesath's fury from all those years ago.

"You just say the word, babe."

It was a relief to Lacerta to hear Acubens confirm that she would still be welcomed with open arms if she did manage to cross that divisible line between the White Moon and Dark Moon. Lacerta smiled softly before glancing to Acubens. The idea of being whisked away to meet a Prince was intriguing but the teen's breath caught on the last little bit of Acubens' speech. If she were to take the plunge as it was she would have a new family waiting in the wings it seemed. It did make the teen curious about what Acubens real name was but there was a right time and a wrong time to ask such questions and right now was not the right time. Instead Lacerta nudged the Velociraptor senshi in the side before resting her hands in her lap. Her voice was quiet as she spoke, "if that offer is still on the table later on I'd be honoured to share your last name."

She let the silence rush in after letting that sink in. It was an easy silence ... one of companionship. However after a few minutes Lacerta glanced to Acubens before grinning. It was only fair that she get to check in now, "So ... is there anything new with you Acubens?"

It was uncanny how easily she could converse with someone who was supposed to be an enemy but Lacerta was beyond caring at this point. Acubens was her friend - it had been pretty clear from their second meeting. If someone else tried to attack her friend in her presence, Lacerta was pretty sure that she'd step in to take the hit.

Acubens' heart caught in her throat. She glanced at Lacerta, flicking tears from her eyes as she did. It took her a moment to find her voice, but when she did, it was strong. It had to be. She ahd to be a rock for Lacerta in these uncertain times, the same way Leto and Remarque had been rocks for her when she was going through the same thing.

"Then you shall have it."

And then the question about what was new with her. Acubens took a deep breath and sat back on her hands, exposing the whole pale line of her neck as she did so. Oh, jeeze, that was a big question. Where to start, where to start.

"Well," she began slowly, the chill wind of early fall sliding easily over her body as she kicked her feet over the abyss of the city below her. "My brother came back. The one I left when I corrupted. He walked into a bakery where I was doing some work for my job and... he recognized me. For a second. And then he left and I followed him. All the way to my gravesite. He was... upset." Which was a light word for it. "So I made myself known to him." A cleaner version of what happened. "And he said his sister was dead. Which... killed me.

But he came back. A friend of mine was there and Misha -- that's his name -- asked what happened. So I told him. The whole... bloody... story. And he left. For months. Went back to Indiana where he lived..." Acubens' voice caught in her throat again, remembering having to come back from that place again and again. Clinging to Lavender like she'd leave her too...

"But then he came back again... and for good this time. He bought my old family home and we're trying to figure each other out. Slowly... but it's going." Acubens cleared her throat again, trying to dislodge the lump in her throat before she went on.

"And then I got engaged." Another voice crack, but this time born of joy and not sorrow. "I was to marry her on my Realm... if you're part of the family by then, I'd love to have you in the wedding." Acubens tossed Lacerta a wink and slung an easy arm around her friend's shoulders. "And even if you're not, we'll find a way for you to be there. Can't be that hard to bring a white mooner to a Realm, right?"

Lacerta listened intently to what Acubens had been going through since their last meeting. It seemed as if her friend had had multiple upheavals in her life since the last time they'd seen each other. It must have been hard for the Velociraptor senshi to come face to face with her brother after so long. The redhead dredged up the memory of Acubens telling her that she had to pretend to die to protect her family and for a moment she had to wonder what it was like for Misha to discover the truth. How complicated things must have been in the first initial meeting after being discovered? Lacerta wasn't sure she would have been able to do what Acubens had done. However it had happened though it seemed as though the relationship wasn't rosy ... but it wasn't downright frosty either. Lacerta cast her gaze over the city's roof line before tuning back into her friend's story.

It was, however, Acubens next statement that caught Lacerta off guard. Engaged? Oh, this was big news. The redhead turned to stare at Acubens, mouth agape, before remembering to close it. As Acubens slung an arm around her the teen leaned in briefly before attempting to hug her friend. She was surprised but she was also happy for Acubens. "Oooh, congrats. And even if I'm not part of the family when the wedding happens there is no way I'd miss it. We'll find a way to make it work ... won't we?"

Although one question nagged at her and Lacerta, being who she was, couldn't help but blurt out, "though I am curious - your realm?"

"Yeah totally... how hard can it even be? I've taken white mooners into mirrorspace... hell I took you in too. The Realms shouldn't be too much different. Just keep a hold of the visitor, right?"

Granted, she didn't know for sure. For all Acubens knew, Mirrorscape wouldn't allow anyone from a different faction through... And now that she was thinking about it, she also had to figure out how to bring Misha in through the mirror. Or awaken him. The idea bloomed to life within Acubens, but she quickly folded it back up. Misha tolerated her court and the senshi within it because they were trying to rebuild a life together. Because of what happened, Acubens was fairly certain that Misha had a less than flattering outlook on the Court as a whole.

"Maybe I'll just postpone until I can convince you and my brother to come home, yeah?" She laughed and nudged Lacerta gently.

"Yeah, my Realm. It's like this chunk of floating land in Mirrorscape that I use those crystals to shape and create life on. Right now it's all greenery. I'm using it as a kind fo greenhouse, since things can grow on it regardless of the season they grow in. Wanna see?"

The idea of a chunk of land that was just floating around was slightly absurd to Lacerta but even as she made that assumption there was a desire to at least see what it was like. She had seen Acubens find that last crystal and was curious about how it helped things create life. The fact was that the senshi of bandages was willing to spend as much time learning every little nuance that she could about the family that she yearned to join. Her gaze went skywards for a moment before she tugged gently at one of the wrappings that draped down from her neck. "I was definitely grateful for the chance to experience mirrorspace too. I'm wondering how mirrorscape would look like to an outsider if I were allowed entrance. I'm curious about how these crystals would work and I'd love to see your realm."

Plucking the bandage again Lacerta leaned forward to glance at the city below. People still went about their business and yet time seemed to stand still for her and Acubens. "I gotta admit to you that this whole evening before meeting with you seems surreal: with being upgraded and all. There was a time when I never thought that this day would come along. To be able to share my new status with you first is the best thing I could have hoped for."

Acubens leaned back on her palms as Lacerta spoke. Listening, she recalled her own upgrade from basic to super. While not as bloody as her corruption and upgrade to eternal, it was in its own way traumatizing.

"Yeah, I remember feeling that way when I upgraded too. I remember feeling so weak and alone as a basic. I found a teacher, sure, but one face among so many was... well... I loved her, and I still do, but it wasn't enough. Powering up made things feel like I had them under control for a while.

"Did I ever tell you this story," she asked, turning halfway to face Lacerta, still reclining as she was.

"I was dating a girl, Keren at the time. I had promised Lesath that I'd power up and corrupt to the Dark Mirror. She even convinced her parents to let me stay with them. Said she'd give me her last name. But last minute I decided that I still had work to do where I was. And truth be told I wasn't ready to leave my family just yet. Still, when I told her that I wouldn't be corrupting that night, she went, understandably, ballistic and kidnapped Keren. I was devastated and mad with panic. I didn't know what to do. I think Lesath was a super at the time, if not then very close to being one. It was sheer luck that Pippin found me and offered me more power. But when I got Keren back I didn't feel like I'd won anything..."

Hadn't... hadn't Keren awakened that night too? Into some kind of... something... Try as Acubens might, though, she couldn't conjure the shape or color of Keren's uniform into her mind. She couldn't even conjure Keren's face, really... Something distant felt grief for forgetting, but it was far off and soft enough to ignore.

"Lucky for you I have a strict no kidnapping notice put out for you. As far as the DMC is concerned, you and yours are safe."

It was strange to learn about things that had happened in the life that Acubens had lived before she, Lacerta, had managed to wander into the velociraptor senshi's orbit. The fact that she was planning to join a faction that would allow their members to stoop so low to kidnapping a civilian as well, revenge, was an eye-opener. However that seemed to have been a past incident and while Lacerta wasn't sure on how she felt just hearing about kidnapping in general just knowing that Acubens was effectively looking out for her well-being was a touching gesture. Had it been anyone else the redhead wouldn't have believed a word but Acubens was a trusted friend. There was no reason to doubt anything. Leaning back she gave a soft sigh before glancing towards the sky.

"After hearing what you went through before you found your own way home I guess I'm grateful that your experience won't be repeated with me. Then again I don't believe that I'll be backing down from this decision that I'm declaring," and here Lacerta paused before finding the strength inside to continue speaking. Her voice was soft but the emphasis on what she was saying was clear. "I know you've said it'd be hard and everything but I think that I'm going to be strong enough to make this work. I want to come home."

Lacerta glanced to Acubens as she finished. There was a burning conviction in her words and she was pretty sure that her expression was just as serious as her last few sentences had been. If anything the past few months had highlighted just how ready she was to jump ship. It would be hard for a while but Lacerta had a feeling she was strong enough to make the transition. Things would need to be taken care of at home and Lacerta was starting to figure out just what she needed to do in order to leave but she just didn't want to rush things ... not quite yet.
