So, Moon Rises Over the Bone Hill spent some time away from the pack, the reason became apparent when she returned with two young puppies (and a deer fawn) in tow, all female. Father unknown (rogue breeding)

One of the puppies, the firstborn, is up for grabs in a personality prompt rp contest. This puppy must remain in the Iron Hides Pack until adulthood, from there, you're free to go wherever you like. This will be a judged contest.

Starts: Now
Ends: Friday 27th September at 6PM GMT.

This is the puppy you're playing for.

User Image

Her litter sister - Dark Moon

User Image
Dark Moon is small, very small and the reason Moon Rises waited until they could walk properly and eat meat before she brought them to the pack, she was born very weak and needed a lot of Moon's attention, perhaps a little TOO much. Dark Moon resent having to rely on others for anything, she would rather be in the shadows and let her sisters shine.

The adopted sister - Pudu, affectionately nicknamed deerpuppy

User Image
Pudu will be a rather small adult. Moon Rises found her alone, hungry and weak, Moon's motherly instincts won out over her hunger and she brought the baby to raise instead of eating, thankfully the puppies were too young to want to eat their deer-sister, now all they see her as is their actual sister, regardless of species. Pudu is rather shy, doesn't like to intrude in the space of others but if she sees either of her wolfie sisters in trouble, she'll not hesitate to use her sharp hooves in their defence.

This is their mother.

User Image
Moon Rises is a quiet wolf, she's also very huge. She she doesn't always understand more complex things but she's far from stupid. She talks in broken words, using as few as possible, she just doesn't feel the need to talk a lot. She also likes to make art from dead animals, mostly bones but sometimes whatever remains of her food. She's fiercely protective of her babies and her pack, especially her Alpha.

Will you be keeping this puppy in the Iron Hides? Yes
If yes to the above, which rank will she grow into Scout
Prompt:

I am the rushing water. I am the crack in the clay of the earth, born under a scorching sun. I am you. I am me. I am anything I want to be.

I am a butterfly, emerging from the chrysalis anew, a different beast altogether.

I am silent.

I study, sit, wait.

My mother is a quiet wolf, therefore I am a quiet wolf. I do as I'm told. But, I do what I want. And what I want is to blend in. My mother, the large wolf that she is, is who I want to be today — right now, in this moment. And so, my mouth is shut. If I must speak, it is in stilted language.

I do not love easily. Unless I am around someone who does. I do not have any particular strong feelings about my siblings, unless near one of them, taking in their energy and spitting it back out in an ever-changing mimic. Like the moon, always changing. Always becoming something else entirely, round and round in a never-ending cycle.

I do not know who I am. But do I know who I can be: anyone.

Puppy's Name: Strong Jaw Bites Through the Bone
Will you be keeping this puppy in the Iron Hides? Yes
If yes to the above, which rank will she grow into Striker
Prompt: Strong Jaw was the alpha of their little pack as far as she was concerned. She proved this in many little ways: in taking initiative as to what to do, what game to play that day; in instructing Pudu and Dark Moon to huddle closer to Mom while she took watch; in taking the first bite of the meal. But these were small ways, and Strong Jaw wanted to be anything but small. She loved her little space with her little family, and she would rule it in spite of her current size and age because she was strong. (It was her name, her being, her sacred promise.) And she wouldn't be little for very long.

As alpha, Strong Jaw understood she had to be tough for her softer sisters. Could Moon Rises protect them? Absolutely. But why make Mom do all the hard work when she was clearly capable? Strong Jaw was loud, territorial, and commanding, and above all fearless. Where Dark Moon struggled, Strong Jaw forced herself to stay steadfast, happy to take attention when her sister didn't wish it. Where Pudu might have attracted strange looks, hungry looks, Strong Jaw stepped in and fought them off. Where Moon Rises Over the Bone Hill cared in quietness, she bellowed her feelings openly and gladly in broken, loving words. Her name of Strong Jaw Bites Through the Bone was so much more than that: it was a promise to her enemies, whether as a puppy or an adult.

They were Hers and Hers alone.

When the urge to howl hit her, she would shriek the same threat into the night. "STRONG JAW PROTECTS HOME!" Considering very little happened to them as they grew, Strong Jaw knew The Outside respected her, and so they were safe from her wrath. She thought this would be enough to make a Home.

And then Mother brought them to the Iron Hides. They had a real alpha. They had a bigger family. They had an actual home. And Strong Jaw grew resentful. Hadn't her protection been enough? Hadn't they been okay in the wilderness on their own, with nobody telling them what to do? She was no longer the leader of the pack but a whelp among strangers, and it shattered her ego. She's still picking up the pieces, prickly around other members beyond her family and known to get into fights at the drop of a hat.

Her strength and aggression as well as her adult size (thanks, mom!) will do her well as a Striker, but Strong Jaw will have to learn discipline and teamwork before she can truly be one of the Iron Hides. She'll always see her sisters as vulnerable, and if anyone so much as looks at them wrong, she's ready to show them just how strong her jaws can be. Words will never be her strong suit, but violence is a universal language.

Puppy's Name: Harvest Moon
Will you be keeping this puppy in the Iron Hides? Yes, she won't be going anywhere!
If yes to the above, which rank will she grow into Stalkers
Prompt: This needs to be from your puppy's perspective, it can be as long or short as you like. (Your sisters are a runt and a deer, your mother isn't very verbal but she adores you and your sisters. What does your pup feel about her mother? How does she feel about her wolf sister taking so much of her mother's attention? What does she think about spending much of her early life packless and suddenly being thrust into a pack? How does she feel about having a deer for a sister? How does she feel about her father not being a pack wolf? .. any of these prompts works, or feel free to create something of your own)

"Well hello there, little one. What are you doing out here, on your lonesome?" The sound cut through Harvest's silence, the pup's head whirling around to stare up at the she-wolf who had snuck up on her- all the better, for while she watched her siblings in short distance playing, her young eyes had begun to droop lazily- and it'd not do for mother to return and find her sleeping, and her sisters.... Wherever they might run of too, getting into whatever they might get up to.

"I'm fine," The pup answered primly, but in truth...

Even in a pack, Harvest Moon discovered herself to be.... lonely.

It was not a feeling the pup, unused still to managing her own emotions, in a healthy manner or not, welcomed. Not when it was just her sisters and mother, and it hadn't become any better once the family joined the pack, either- in fact, quite the opposite. Harvest quickly found that loneliness still seeped deep into her heart like a heavy chill into her fur, simply.... A different sort of loneliness.

"Hm," the wolf answered back, sitting on her haunches, neat little tail wrapping around her paws as she cocked her head at the pup, "One would think that a young thing like you would find more enjoyment playing with her peers, rather than watching." It was a statement more than a question, and Harvest heard it- pushing herself onto her own haunches, ears pricked politely to her elder- she wasn't mannerless, no matter how unwelcome the questions were, given her surly frown.

"I'm tired. Besides, I have a better view from up here. Momma will be back soon, then I can do whatever I'd like. I don't like being around noisy pups...," In the first few days, the loneliness abated- attended to by so many new wolves, here to see the new puppies joining the pack, Harvest took to the attention in a way her sisters and mother didn't, and for the first time in her life, soaked up the praise that was to be earned by nothing more than luck in genetics- how big and how strong she was- never outright scorning her sister, of course, and it wasn't as though Harvest herself was any giant of a pup, either, but the sudden attention.... After living in her sickly sisters' shadows, it was as welcome as a dried flower welcomed rain.

Until suddenly, it wasn't. The novelty of new puppies only lasts so long, especially with a family so anti-social as Harvest Moon's. Visitors stopped visiting, and life resumed as it once was, Moon Rises fretting and fawning over Dark Moon in all her frailty, and Harvest Moon- perfectly capable of taking care of herself and watching over her sisters, when need be- was all but ignored again.

The adult seemed no more interested in this answer than she was the first, sniffing disdainfully, "A puppy's play nurtures proper development. You're going to fall behind in your socialization, with an outlook like that," Harvest had to bite back a rude answer to that assessment- seemed to her, the wolf was speaking from experience, but it was never proper to back talk elders, even rude elders. Harvest simply didn't need anyone- Moon Rises had never coddled her, she'd never had a chance to get close to her sister, and she never needed to, either.

Oh, Moon Rises was not a neglectful mother- but there was an imbalance, and even within a pack, Harvest Moon felt it, and she felt it deeply. Never did she open her mouth to dare say it, though, allowing the thorn to sit in her heart and fester. Perhaps, she believed, making her own friends, even as a pup, would help- but over the weeks, wolves coming and going, and each friend she claimed left, too. Abandonment- it was a bitter drug, and eventually, she stopped trying.

She was doomed to sit and watch her sisters- Harvest Moon, the good one. The strong one. The responsible one. The one that never said a word negatively, that never spoke out of turn with mother and always watched her sisters like a good girl.

"I'm ahead of my age, wolves usually say. I've got to practice, if I want to be a Stalker," The one who suddenly, with adolescence approaching in the not-too-distant future, turned her eyes towards the future. Her future, and her place in the pride.

"The Stalkers, hmmmm," The older wolf appraised her thoughtfully, before tipping her head towards a nearby tree, "I hate to break it to you, pup, but it's looking as though once you get big enough to Stalk, you'll be big enough to snap a tree like that right in two. That's not a very sensible goal for a strappin' young thing like yourself."

Part of Harvest knew that- but she'd never have to sit down and look after her peers, her brothers and sisters of battle- they were small like Dark Moon, and frail like Pudu, but they were strong, too. They didn't expect sisters to sit down and pamper them- or mothers, either. They didn't sit, spoiled, out of the sun.... They worked, they fought, they listened and they heard- perhaps physically, there was not much she held in common with the rank, but she could sit. She could watch. She could listen.... And in a way, it was the rebellion in her heart that pushed her interest in the rank of finesse- so unlike anything she might be expected to take on, nothing like the protection she was expected to give. If she was doomed to spend her life watching after those weaker than herself, well, she'd to it on her terms.

"Then you see why I can't play," Harvest replied, the rudeness of her impatience finally seeping into her responses, "I've got to be good now, so when I get bigger, I can be even better, and my size won't matter!"

She almost bit her tongue the moment she was done, with the stern glare the older gave her, standing up and towering over her, as most adults do, but not quite so menacingly.... Not quite in a way that made her shrink back, puffed like a dandelion in sudden fear at the look that raked over her....

But as soon as it was there, it was gone, replaced again by the cool appraisal with a huff, "Well then, your mind seems made up. All as well, if you weren't serious about your goals, you had no business spying on training," The strange she-wolf barked a laugh at the look of horror that crossed Harvest's face at the revelation, "Oh, aye, you've got practice to do, little thing. You're not very sneaky- yet. When your mother returns and you run off to do 'whatever you'd like', I'll see you. I suppose the first lesson should be to walk without stepping on every twig, pine needle, and dead leaf in the forest, eh?" she chuckled, turning to leave the pup stunned in silence.

The thing about friends, perhaps, was that they come from unexpected places.... And support you in the most unexpected of ways. A lesson to be learned- but for the time being, the pup turned her eyes back to her sisters- even with the promise of the future that was so soon to knock at the door, family was important, and she had sisters to watch after.

Puppy's Name: Below My Hollow Grave
Will you be keeping this puppy in the Iron Hides? Yes
If yes to the above, which rank will she grow into Striker
Prompt: She liked to call herself a devourer.
Because that's what she did -- devour.

Hollow was built for one thing only in her eyes; to destroy and consume. Her sisters were born weak and she was left with the bounty of strength left behind (or that's how she saw it). Sometimes, on those rare nights where she'd allow a smile on her face, she'd joke that she took Dark Moon's strength in the womb. It was a morbid joke often led with Hollow claiming Dark Moon got everything else desirable while Hollow was left with only sheer power, but it was how she felt.

She never was a small wolf. Even as a puppy she was of a size that promised great things. Hollow was always acutely aware of her differences from her two sisters. Hollow was colder emotionally, and once upon a time that bothered her. She couldn't understand why Dark Moon would cry or Pudu struggled with being bold. She lacked the emotional intelligence, but as she grew Hollow just accepted it. Dark Moon and Pudu were meant for those kind of things -- not someone like her.

Hollow was good at other things. Destructive things. Things that caused bloodshed and bones to crunch. Things her sisters didn't do. Things needed to be done to protect the ones Hollow loves, even if sometimes she struggles understanding how deep that love runs. Hollow has always been cut off and distant with her family, but perhaps it's because she doesn't want to put on them her morbid jokes and dry view on the world. They're so kind, and so gentle. She's not.

And maybe Hollow wishes she could be what her sisters are. She knows her size and strength put an image to her and a role she must play. It's what she was made for. But sometimes, when no one is awake, she finds herself wishing she could allow herself to show other emotions. A gentler side. She feels foolish wishing these things, as she has a role to play. But perhaps the right wolf could help her explore that side of her?

Until then, Hollow devours. She consumes all that tries to maim her family. It doesn't have to be living, for if her sisters came to her with a problem she'd rush in to try and fix it; aggressively. Her answers to situations have always been physical, and that perhaps attributes to why she doesn't bond easily with anyone else. Who wants to be friends with a large she-wolf who will crush your skull if you reject her sister?

Her words are cut off and stifled like her mothers. Her emotions are stiff and unused. Her strength is all consuming and vicious. Hollow is encompassed by traits she knows many would reject, and so she doesn't try hard to befriend others. They need to push for her company. Hollow would never admit it, even after death, but loneliness ebbs at her daily. She doesn't get how her sisters do it -- make friends, be kind, be vulnerable. It won't be uncommon within the pack to find her in the shadows just watching, which adds to her negative image. She's fine with it -- it's how it needs to be.

Eventually, she will develop past these flaws and stiff boundaries. It'll take multiple experiences and kind wolves to lead the way, but perhaps someday she'll open up into the wolf she can truly be.

Puppy's Name: Brittle Bones Under the Harvest Moon
Will you be keeping this puppy in the Iron Hides? Yes
If yes to the above, which rank will she grow into Merchant
Prompt:

"Come on, where will you ever find something else like this?"

The adult male looked between the small pup and the assortment of shiny coins and colourful beads. One in particular has caught his eye and Brittle latched onto that as quickly as she could. Her brilliant eyes focused so intently on him that she was willing to bet it was a bit unnerving.

"I don't know..." He started, glancing back over his shoulder.

Darn. She didn't have him yet. She placed a small paw beside the largest and brightest of the coins. "Maybe your mate doesn't need my goods, I'm sure you can find something more spectacular. It is only her birthday after all. Surely she doesn't need some over the top, rare bit of silver." She moved her paw, mining the movements it would take to push her small pile of treasures back into the sachet she'd brought with her.

"No, no, no!" His paw stopped hers. His eyes begged her to reconsider, but he made no move to renegotiate their previous offer.

"Okay," the pup nodded, moving her law back. "My price still stands." She wasn't backing down from that one. She needed that bit of twine he'd come to her with but she wanted that feather necklace about his neck.

She watched as he debated to himself, shifting anxious. She could always press a bit more, but that would likely break any deal forming. Put too much pressure on something and it snapped. Same concept here.

Finally, the older wolf looked to her with a nod. "All right. A necklace and some twine seems a small price for my mate's happiness."

Brittle grinned brightly, bending to slide the coin toward him along with two beads of a matching colour. "Half the twine and the necklace," she corrected. When he gave her a puzzled look, she smiled slyly. "The silver would make a lovely necklace, indeed."

He barked out a laugh as he removed his own necklace. "How did you--"

"No one walks through the pack with raw materials unless they're looking to create something." She passed him his goods and took her payment. After he left, she nudged everything back in her bag and slipped the strap about her neck to move on to another area. Today was a good day to haggle, it seemed, surely Mother would understand her lengthy absence when she returned with her array of newly gained treasure.

Puppy's Name: Blood Moon Rises
Will you be keeping this puppy in the Iron Hides? Yes
If yes to the above, which rank will she grow into Defenders
Prompt:
If there was one thing Blood had learned from her mother, it was that the big protect the small. Thus, since Blood is especially big, especially in contrast to her sisters, she's meant to look out after everyone! Pudu was the one that she spent most of her time looking after, since her mother was always with Dark Moon.

That didn't mean that Blood didn't spend time with Dark Moon, however. If anything, she learned to nudge her sisters into the same general direction and circle around them until she was satisfied they weren't going anywhere and that nothing was going to come attack them. To other's her circling habits may have been a little much, but her desire to protect only increased when they joined the Iron Hides.

For a while, it was difficult to get her to leave her sisters' sides. There were so many new wolves looking at them differently! Did that mean they were hostile? Were they going to try and eat Pudu? She wouldn't let them! As she would grow, she would come to realize that her pack mates didn't wish her or her sisters harm. She would find others to protect and pick up her job as a Defender, to use her bulky size and good heart to the best ability for her pack.

Firstly, thank you SO much everyone for entering, it's been great reading all your entries and ideas.

This was such a hard decision and i had to enlist the Pack's owner to help me judge.

Between us, me and Saint Vis decided that LadyPipen's entry was the one that spoke to us the most for this little lady.

LadyPipen
