His father was a in the navy but seeing how he'd come home drunk and often put his hands on his mom scarred him ever being like his father. No he'd be free to explore the vast seas and not be a slave to his fathers own failed ambitions. Though his father was going to make him a soldier yet, using his love of the sea he pushed him towards navy. Hesitating as Eric was hit was a barrage of reasons why sailing was a waste of life, it was a constant attack on his dreams.
His father pulled some strings and he was pressured to go off to join the navy or his mother would be hurt again. Returning after three years now an adult only to be greeted by new of his mother passing. She had become ill soon after he left, Eric turned his back on his father and stopped speaking to him ever since. On his time back he met a young woman and fell in love, she saw past his anger and became his obsession. He'd even give up alcohol for her as he was afraid to strike out at her like his father did in his drunk moments. No, he'd cherish her. But expenses threatened their own little paradise and despite her wishes he left her for another tour to pay off their debt. After the tour he returned to see the house was locked and empty, again he was alone. Pouring himself into his work he returned to the battlefield, reading the letter again while his team was ambushed in the middle of the night.
Tortured for intel for 7 months laying in a cell where his fellow men had killed themselves for a escape, though Eric burdened the waterboarding, the cuts, electric shocks, beatings, and poison torture. Once rescued he spent a year in coma before returning to service only to be dishonorable discharged for nearly killing two men during a sparring match. Now Eric is back to drinking and working security gigs to get by.
