xxx✿PERSONALITY❀xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx SHYWeslyn learned young that the safest way to exist was to stay out of sight, stay quiet, and if told to do anything, do it quickly and without question. The Knolles did done wonders for her nervousness, and her years at Hogwarts pushed her boundaries, but she's still most comfortable with her family, close friends, and hates to step on anyone's toes. Weslyn considers herself "fine” most of the time-- she’s only seen anger expressed through violence, so she tries very hard to never feel anything like that.
HARDWORKING Whether that means diligently doing what she’s been told to or just taking care of herself and her plants, Weslyn will find a way to stay busy and out of the way. She keeps busy at sea or on shore, but is always happy to just rest and knit.
HELPFUL Weslyn’s favorite way of staying busy is being useful, and she always wants to be helpful: she would never complain of being hungry while her birthparents were away, she lied to get them out of paying more for psychologist appointments, she tried to be useful around the farm, and has tried to fill in for any role needed as a crew member of the Solus. While she doesn’t like the spotlight, Wes considers success being able to help others and be there when needed.

xxx✿BACKSTORY❀xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ✿❀EARLY CHILDHOOD Weslyn used to be Alice Zheng. Alice lived in Dublin, Ireland, where her father, Iain, was busy getting his degree, and her mother, Faye, worked at a pub to make ends meet. Alice’s parents argued a lot: about finances, housing, the future, the fact that they never had a proper wedding ceremony or ring, work, Alice herself. Sometimes these would get violent, and Alice quickly learned that intervening only made things worse and resulted in her getting yelled at or hit. But inevitably, her parents would always get back together.
School was never easy, and nothing Alice ever did seemed to be good enough. Then in second grade, she threw a crayon in anger at someone, missed, and instead managed to explode the crayon over the wall. The school insisted on a psychologist for anger issues. Back home, the financial problems got worse. In an effort to avoid the sessions, Alice portrayed herself as an alternate person with a different family life, basing her story off her favorite characters from cartoons.
Faye had been a witch at Long Jiang School of Magic, but dropped out when she got pregnant to pursue her relationship across the sea. She had planned on leaving magic and that world behind, but as the stress got to her, Faye started using magic to take care of the home. Alice’s magic manifested initially as small things: her baby blanket alone would be able to keep her warm on cold nights, spills on her clothes would vanish when no one was looking. Before Faye properly realized, Iain caught on: He saw Alice as a fascination, to be studied and investigated. Working from home, he would tell her to do things repeatedly and either praise or yell at her. Alice was terrified--she didn't know how to control her magic and mostly she just destroyed things or nothing happened. Faye managed to convince him to keep this "discovery" secret and denied any knowledge of magic, caught between horror at her husband's clinical interest, and her desperation to preserve magical secrecy. She did though, notice his ire was usually turned away from her, and they argued much less.
Finally, Faye’s grandfather, posing as a licensed counselor, offered to raise the child while Iain finished his dissertation and Faye figured out finances. Happy to have his magic passed off as “sleights of hand" and cheerful "entertainment", the old wizard raised Alice in Belfast for three months, taking her to aquariums, telling her stories of Long Jiang, and teaching her to control her magic. As his health started failing, he got her to open up. He convinced Alice there was more to life than surviving the next argument and offered her a restart. Then, armed with false papers in case anyone came searching, he took her to his old friends, the Knolles.
✿❀ADOPTION On Christmas 2044, Alice, now Weslyn, began a nervously happy life with her new family. There were a lot of potatoes involved, but she had siblings to play with now: Yukon always made working in the field fun, she liked reading with Kennebec, and Hannah made her potato pancakes every morning. Trusting that her identity was safely hidden, Weslyn slowly started to bury her past and embrace life on the farm. The next three years were a quiet and happy life. She got closer to her brothers, particularly Kenny, but never quite opened up about what her life was like before. She missed Yukon terribly when he was at Hogwarts, but when her own Hogwarts letter arrived, she was still nervous.
✿❀SCHOOL YEARS ■✿FIRST YEAR Weslyn was relieved to be sorted into Yukon's Hufflepuff house and spent most of her time following her brothers everywhere. She stuck close to Kenny in class, where she found most of her courses both extraordinarily interesting and difficult. Yukon caught on to her following behavior in the first week though, and pushed her boundaries by dropping her off alone at Cooking club. It turned out to be a very good experience, and as the year went on, Weslyn slowly got more comfortable hanging out with her class or clubmates. She attended the Valentine's dance with Yukon and Kenny, but talked to other people there. She even befriended a merman in the lake!
❀SECOND YEAR started with Yukon persuading her to join the Quidditch team. Weslyn didn't really want to play, but she did want to support her house where she could. Otherwise, she kept plenty busy with clubs, and got more comfortable with her drawing and cooking. If she wasn't in clubs or studying with her brothers, she hung out by the Lake with fellow hydrophile Skipper and their merman friend, Asra; if it was too cold to swim, she'd still hang out and knit or draw. She enjoyed the company of Yukon's friends in clubs, her roommate Willow back at the dorm, and was slowly starting to feel more at ease in her own skin.
That summer, while discussing electives and shopping for books, Weslyn came face to face with Faye and a young boy. Thankfully, even though Wes panicked, the incident was waved aside and Faye left. Back at home, Wes finally told her brothers everything about her life before coming to the Knolles.
✿THIRD YEAR Weslyn spent a good part of her year getting as much of Annie Sheehan, her artist mentor and friend, before Annie graduated. Thus, in addition to a bunch of knitting projects, Wes also added a lot more drawings projects to her portfolio. Her electives were equally hard as interesting, and between studying, clubs and swimming, Wes was very busy the rest of the hours. Thus, Weslyn was surprised when her friend Eden asked her out. She agreed, mostly since it seemed to make him really happy. It was mostly studying together, and talking about themselves, and while she was worried he spent too much money on her, she grew to really enjoy listening to his stories and found herself sharing things she usually only told her brothers.
❀FOURTH YEAR Fourth year amped up the pressure in classes. Between four clubs, Quidditch, and classes, Weslyn was constantly studying often under Eden's diligent tutelage. On the other hand, Eden was constantly frustrated with being anything less than the top of the class and constantly vented to her, which was quite stressful. He also had a tendency to stick with her all the time, barely giving her any time with other friends and family. By the end of the school year, Wes started looking for a way to break up without sacrificing their friendship. The whole situation stressed her out greatly, which caused her plants to suffer, and struggling in Herbology stressed her out even more.
At the beginning of the summer, Eden had splurged to take her to the Aquarium in Belfast--the first aquarium she'd ever been to with her great-grandfather. At the end, he gave her the contact information to Alice's old family, including the name of her little brother. With her brothers' support, Skips' encouragement, and her own fear driving her, she finally broke up with Eden, even if it didn't go as expected.
✿FIFTH YEAR Even with the added pressure of OWLs coming up, Weslyn had much more free time and was happy to spend time with her brothers again--especially Yukon, who had suffered the loss of his fiancee towards the end of summer. She worried incessantly about his alcoholic tendencies, and did her best to encourage him to better habits and make him more comfortable, even if she wasn't sure how effective she was. Wes also worked up the courage to leave the Daily Dragon and focus on her own hobbies and interests, one of them learning mermish so she could better communicate with her and Skipper's merman friend. She studied hard for OWLs, but test nerves still got to her.
❀SIXTH YEAR continued Weslyn's trend towards more confidence as she was suddenly thrust into leadership positions as captain of the Culinary Club and co-captain of Herbology Club after the intended captains turned them down. While always uncertain of herself and ability, she gained at least a little confidence and was able to relax and acknowledge her growth and satisfaction at the end of the year. She otherwise spent a quiet year, learning about the animagus transformation (although she wasn't quite ready to try it), learning mermish, studying for NEWT level classes, and of course continuing to hang out with her brother and friends.
✿SEVENTH YEAR Weslyn was startled to be appointed Head Girl in her final year and although nervous to lead--especially since she hadn't been a prefect-- but she did her best to come up with ideas. She worked well with Cenek Knapp, and put on a successful Deep Sea Horrors Masquerade--along with donations to environmental conservation efforts. In the beginning of the new year, Wes finally completed her animagus transformation, and with Kenny and Skip watching over her, turned into a common octopus. She and Skip started dating soon after.
Finally, Weslyn met with and befriended Angier Zheng, her biological younger brother. At the end of the year, Wes worked up the courage to reveal her former identity as Alice, and finally got closure on that part of her life.
✿❀POST-GRADUATION After graduation, Wes spent a quiet summer at home getting ready. She interned for a year for Jonah Lane as he was starting his magical creature care clinic. In 2056, she and Skip started as magizoologists aboard the Solus, a research vessel. Although they were apprenticed to rival magizoologists, it only helped their bond grow. They were married aboard in 2059, the same year her former housemate Jade Morris joined them aboard. Unfortunately, Angier's own animagus transformation had not gone as well as her own and he was killed in the process a few months earlier.
Weslyn adjusted to life at sea remarkably well and was happy to find that her abilities with cooking and healing were well-appreciated as the cook and healer on board were looking towards retirement. She was even considered briefly as first mate for when Harmony Aindrias took over the ship. On Harmony's 21st birthday, she and Wes took the ship out after repairs for a quick run only for it to lead to the death of a man.

INSECURE Weslyn carries a lot of self-doubt and her perception of herself constantly swings from “worthless” to “decent” and back. She tends to take criticism to heart, regardless of if these things are true or said in jest. She’s afraid of not being smart enough, not being athletic enough, not being good enough--not being enough. And even if she were suddenly "enough", she's starting to question if she would be brave enough to do anything with it.

OWLs
CORE Astronomy ~ P
Astronomy was pretty, but ultimately Weslyn thought it was a bunch of colored balls in the sky with too-complicated details. She also had bad memories of Astronomy with her birthfather, and hardly studied for Astronomy beyond doing the homework. By the time it came to study for OWLs there was too much to catch up on and she would much rather spend the time working on any other subject.
Charms ~ A
Weslyn struggled with spellcasting for her first few years, and even though she was much improved by the time her OWLs came around, she wasn’t quite sure on the theoretical details and missed a few points there. She flubbed the first spell of the practical, throwing her off and doing less than ideally on the practical section. It was mostly nerves, and after some reassurance, she was hopeful to have the chance to redeem herself in NEWTs.
Defense Against the Dark Arts ~ A
Weslyn was pretty skittish in DADA, not only because every new dark creature was a new thing to fear or dislike, but because she didn’t trust herself to deal with them. At first she was very intimidated by Professor Cohen, but this was replaced by a sense of quiet comfort in fifth year. Despite her squeamishness, Wes kept reminding herself to be brave and always worked hard to overcome her concerns. Fifth year was also the first year she was able to dispel a boggart: When the boggart turned into her brothers throwing potatoes at her and casting her out, she faltered and cried for a hot minute before remember their true words and turning the whole thing into a fun water-balloon fight.
Herbology ~ O
Weslyn put in a solid effort in Herbology from Day 1, thinking it would make her more useful in the kitchen and on the farm. She was intimidated by Professor Hill, but after befriending Willow Hill from her dorm and Aspen Hill in Herbology Club, she felt much more comfortable in class, and her performance in Herbology flourished. Her plants felt and magnified her insecurities in fourth year, causing her grades to sink; however, her weekly attendance and performance in Herbology Club continued to to excel, and it kept her hope and determination up. Over the summer and through fifth year, her herbology scores were first to recover, and by OWLs she was performing outstandingly as usual.
History of Magic ~ E
Weslyn liked how Professor Powell told stories, and she thought studying History was pretty straightforward. While history had never been her favorite subject, she had always done well in History. She also didn’t feel the same trepidation or doubt from History as she did her exams with practicals.
Potions ~ A
Weslyn had always done okay in Potions. She wasn’t anything incredible, but she treated it like cooking and generally did okay. However, she was always unnerved by exam atmospheres and mixed up a few potions when writing about them. Luckily she collected herself before the practical, which salvaged her score.
Transfiguration ~A
While initially one of her worst subjects, Weslyn was fascinated by the idea of turning into a creature for herself and from third year on strived diligently to get better at Transfiguration. She practiced a lot, memorized what she didn’t really understand, and asked her housemates for help when needed. One good thing about her fourth year was Eden’s overcome-by-exposure attitude, and she finally managed to conquer hesitations with animal transfiguration after excessive practice—and as long as she could perform the spell effectively, she was convinced she wasn’t hurting the creatures.
ELECTIVES Art ~ E
Weslyn entered Hogwarts just knitting, but was inspired by Annie Sheehan in the Daily Dragon and Art clubs, which she had joined to hang out with her brothers. She picked up a penchant for drawing animals, particularly sea creatures and underwater environments. By fifth year, her sketching skills had improved remarkably and she was assured by many that it would be an easy OWL for her. However, she was terribly unnerved by the exam conditions and felt like she had forgotten everything she’d learned in class. Her Octopus-in-a-Reef sketch for the practical was supposed to land and blend in, but actually only vibrated, reflecting her nervousness with the exams.
Care of Magical Creatures ~ O
Even though Weslyn’s main interest was in aquatic animals, Weslyn took to all magical creatures with just as much interest. For each creature she strove to understand not only how it lived but how it flourished and interacted with other creatures—magical or mundane— in the community and ecosystem. Each part of the creature had a certain significance and history, and for every creature, Weslyn was excited to learn where they fit in. She had plenty to write about each creature, and quickly identified the relevant knowledge to ensure the best care of every creature she encountered.
Healing ~ E
Weslyn figured that healing was something she ought to learn. She wasn’t particularly good at it but really wanted to continue so she put her best effort in. Eden had always seemed to be particularly good at Healing and she picked up a bunch of tips studying with him over third and fourth years. Yukon’s girlfriend dying earlier that summer had her focusing on healing in his stead, wondering what more could have gone wrong. She wasn’t planning to pursue a career in healing, but if she could just do first aid, maybe she could save a creature or even a person from untimely tragedy. Where she struggled in magic theory, with healing theory Weslyn at least could understand and ground her learning in a body. Her bedside manner was gentle and compassionate, if mired in insecurity--even if she knew what to do and what she was doing, she tended to be bad at communicating that knowledge.
Muggle Studies ~ O
Weslyn brought up Muggle Studies because of a terrible interest in understanding how her birthfather might think of magic, and because her brothers both seemed to think it would be an easy grade to self-study. Come fourth year, she was fairly certain she agreed, but she still attended most classes, even though she wasn’t formally enrolled. Even with minimal studying, she was familiar enough from the classes to ace the OWL.
Wizard Law~ E
Law was not the kind of elective that Weslyn ever thought she would ever take, but she had gotten intrigued while looking at Yukon’s assignments in previous years. The class was interesting, and ministry legal jobs sounded like a quiet place where she could work but make a difference. Her real fascination came, of course, with the classification of magical creatures and how the Statute of Secrecy applied to them. She was nerve-wracked by the practical, but as always connected it to magical creature law, and was actually quite satisfied with her response.
----------------------------------------- Weslyn works quite hard in all her classes, but generally has severe test anxiety. She is also learning to prioritize, and to align her studying with her interests -- these slowly growing changes haven't quite shown effect yet though!

NEWTs
Charms ~ A
NEWTs were much harder than OWLs, but Weslyn was also much better prepared for the exam atmosphere and had much more time to practice. She put forward a solid effort, particularly in nonverbal spellwork, since she liked being able to cast without a sound. Other complex spells though, still proved difficult, just costing her the E.
Defense Against the Dark Arts ~ E
DADA hadn’t been Weslyn’s favorite subject but it was required to work in the Wizengamut and Wes sunk as many hours into the subject as she had to, in case the Ministry did have a place for her. As with the OWL, she was nervous but found ways to practice for the exam that helped her get over the initial squeamishness and face the challenge head-on. She was pleasantly surprised to just get the E.
Herbology ~ O
For someone so nervous, Weslyn always seemed more at ease around plants and animals. By the end of fifth year she recognized the close emotional bond she had with her plants and from then gardening was almost like meditation for her-- no matter what doubts and insecurities plagued her everyday mind, Wes let them go while she tended to her plants. She put extra care into studying the theoretical side as well, looking into not only the plant properties and care, but also the optimal conditions and how the plant interacted with other flora and fauna in the wild. Four years tutoring and two years of leading the Herbology club (including coming up with activities and field trips!) also helped her express things more clearly and concisely for the written portion. She treated the NEWT exam the same as any other class or herbology club session, and her score faithfully reflected her performance.
Potions ~ E
Weslyn worked really hard at potions to be good enough to make the Animagus potion. While some complex potions theory still seemed a bit beyond her, she had enough of an idea of how everything worked together and enough experience to be able to fix any mistakes that came up or adapt with alternate ingredients or procedures. She wasn’t making any original potions, but with all the extra practice under her belt, Wes was confident and efficient with her potion-making techniques and skills.
Transfiguration ~O
Weslyn’s effort in her Animagus studies greatly helped her understanding of Transfiguration in general as well. She studied hard, worked at her skills, and found ways to use transfiguration in event-planning. She recognized how versatile transfiguration could be, and finally, at some point in the spring, floating camouflaged in the Lake in her animagus form, the transfiguration theories that she could only hope to memorize and thoroughly study beforehand clicked together.
ELECTIVES Art ~ E
Weslyn was much calmer and better prepared for the NEWT exam. She had a better grasp of art theories and artists—particularly notable magizoologists who published their anatomical sketches— and had a plan for the practical that she carried out perfectly.
Care of Magical Creatures ~ O
Weslyn was still back and forth between working in the Beasts Department of the Ministry of Magic and pursuing aquatic magizoology, but it was clear she would be doing some work with aquatic creatures. Her mermish was better, and her time spent as an octopus offered unique insights and helped her put her creatures knowledge in a very real and lived experience. Her knowledge of herbology also helped her develop not just an understanding of creatures, but how they fit in and interacted with their environments and other creature, making her a very well rounded student in this field.
Healing ~ E
Encouraged by her E in OWLs, Weslyn continued with healing. She focused more of her efforts into healing animals. Her extra practice gave her a better understanding of how healing worked both practically and theoretically. Knowing she was reliable for first magical aid also helped with her confidence and communication, as she was more confident in her explanations and bedside manner.
Muggle Studies ~ E
Weslyn had decided at OWLs she was definitely staying in the wizarding world, but was persuaded to take the NEWT exam if only for the extra grade. Who knew how it might be useful? With other classes and head girl duties though, she didn’t attend as many of the classes and again did only minimal studying for the exam. While she knew most of the content from being familiar with the muggle world, without the extra class participation she struggled to succinctly express the content on the exam.
Wizard Law~ E
Aside from Law being a useful subject if she planned to work in the Ministry, Weslyn had enjoyed Wizard Law: She thought it was useful for philosophical discussions and interesting to consider. Although she particularly was interested in legal classifications of magical creatures and how to advocate for these creatures, Wes also learned about how the wider magical society worked through Wizard Law, and looked for where she fit in within that society and how the law might affect the practicalities of her everyday. With increased confidence in herself in her older years she performed better at the law practical, although she had clear strengths and weaknesses in the subject.

Post-grad Solus schedule
On-Duty hours: 08:00-20:00. Weekdays
Wakes up around 7, gets ready and dressed. Often spends her off-duty hour just in the room doodling or relaxing in the galley. Heads upstairs to get or help with breakfast around 7:45. Heads to the magizoology office afterwards.
After checking on experiments and doing any pressing tasks, she spends the morning writing and working on analyses. This schedule also is affected by what kind of data collection is going on. Data collection is always first priority.
Helps out with lunch, then takes lunch with Skip. Hangs out on deck with whoever is around, maybe spends some time in navigation. Spends the afternoon in the water as much as possible while it's warm. Chats with people, heads back into the office to work or read. Octopi are cold-blooded. Wes would prefer to be inside and human when it's cold. Usually leaves the office around 18:00 to help with dinner and then doesn't return after unless getting a book or something.
Unwinds in the evening. She is always up on deck if there are people handing out telling stories or playing music. She's usually just knitting, but will chime in occasionally and there was a joke about learning to drums as an octopus.
Weekends: Treats Fri/ Sun as easier days with more time in the galley or helping out around and only checks in on the magizoology office to make sure everything is fine.
