Another day was drawing to close. The evening meal had been prepared, served, and cleared away candlemarks ago. The Weyr seemed to be letting out a collective breath as the light faded and it seemed another day would pass without the eggs on the sand hatching. The Touching had gone without issue. The healers were confident in the health of the eggs. The eggs had reached that age were they regularly twitched and shifted. This left the Weyr on tenderhooks, ready to drop everything at a moment’s notice to rush to the cavern. Dragons returned to their weyrs, humans to their cots, and some of the tension began to ease as the peace of night took hold. Lulling the inhabitants of the Weyr into a serene silence.
Except one. It was not unusual for Power to be awake when others were not. The egg regularly shifted and wiggled. It’s constant bouts of energy had raised many false alarms as the egg lurched around. Inside the hatchling reached out to their mother as they insistently wriggled. They were tired of being here, Mother! They had had enough! A determined lurch sent the egg shooting forward, rolling away from their mother and siblings. A defiant crack echoed through the dark cavern, bouncing off the walls of the empty chamber. They weren’t going to wait anymore!

The waiting seemed to have gone on forever now and neither V' nor Lithustoth liked waiting especially not for something as tense as this, something that the whole shaffing world rested on. It couldn't be much longer now though and so V' had taken to sleeping in the hatching grounds so she'd be close by when the time came, not that she could change what happened but she'd be there for Lith no matter whether it was good or bad.
As the Weyr started to settle for the night the dark-hided green lay curled loosely around her tiny clutch, alert to every little shift in their shells and minds; V' stood at the cavern's mouth leaning against the wall watching the fading light with a cup of wine in her hand and a little frown making a line between her brows, which had been just about permanent since the Touching had ended. The healers thought the eggs were fine and so did Lith but what if they were wrong, or what if the hatchlings couldn't bond properly because... well she didn't know why they wouldn't be able to but that and hundreds of other awful possibilities had been running through her mind. Better to be ready for the worst thing you could think of than to be caught by surprise.
Crack.
Surprise!
Even though this was definitely a good surprise and really not a surprise surprise V's heart started racing and her mouth went dry; she tossed back the last of her wine to deal with the second thing and passed the cup to Brute as she strode back into the cavern and;
It is time! Lithustoth's voice surged and snapped through the Weyr, crackling with urgency and intensity as she lifted her head and began to hum. Candidates get yourselves to the sands right now, there's no time for hanging about fussing with your hair! Her four hatchlings were about to enter the world, and she was scored if they'd come out to an empty cavern!
As the hum spread through the Weyr V' scrambled around in the stands setting out glows from one of the large covered storage baskets, soon enough she was joined by hurrying drudges and once she judged there were enough of them she abandoned that job and leaped back down onto the hot sands. When the candidates arrived she'd be expected to go take a place in the stands but right now all she wanted was to be close to her dragon and there was nobody here to tell her she couldn't.
"Hey you," she murmured, reaching up towards her dragon's face as she spoke.
Hey you, Lithustoth replied, still humming as she dipped her head to press her muzzle into V's palm. My children will be strong, and they will bond safely - count on it.
Lith's hum was sending weird vibrations down the length of V's arm and though she still couldn't push her worries out of her head she couldn't help but grin at that, and at the love and excitement pouring off her bondmate. "We are Lith, all of us." No pressure.

F’ked and Blue Lerenth F’ked had settled into his bed for the night. He was not allowed to stay there long in the warming furs as a hum started. Lerenth took up the call. The eggs have started to hatch mine. He grinned and flung off the covers to pull on his clothes again. Ah finally! This will be exciting.
A quick ride and they were at the sands. Lerenth immediately checked on Lithustoth first, Is there anything you require now? He dropped his rider on the Stands and found a perch for himself. F’ked watched the green mother and eggs eagerly. These were his blue’s eggs too. He couldn’t help but feel a little proud.
Servitor Loryan Loryan had been curious to hear that the green had finally clutched, but hadn’t thought too much of it. He heard comments about the green and her eggs every once in a while, but never paid much attention to it. Things were just winding down at Fort Hold when there was a commotion out in the courtyard. Loryan followed the Steward out to see what it was all about. Somehow he found himself included among the group to attend the imminent hatching at Fort Weyr.
It was all so unexpected. He held onto the Steward in front of him as the dragon took them between to the weyr and dropped them off near the stands. Loryan climbed up to sit with the others; once seated, he took a moment to look around himself. It was a completely new situation. He’d never been to the weyr before.
There was so many people rushing in or being delivered by dragon. Some joined them in the stands. Others in white robes took to the hot sands in front of the tiny clutch. Curiously he watched the eggs.
Candidate Turanves Things were just settling down in the candidate barracks, when Huxali started chirruping in his ear. Turanves eyed the brown firelizard wondering what was up with him. Then suddenly he found himself on his feet and changing into his white robes. White robes? Hatching! He felt the dragons begin to hum through the soles of his feet.
Turanves firmly ordered Huxali to stay on his bed as he headed toward the Sands. He didn’t want to be late! The teen raced to the entrance of the hatching sands. He hoped his brother would arrive soon. With a deep breath he walked onto the hot sands. His head held high, but his eyes demurely downcast. Yes he was here. Yes he would impress to the best dragon of this clutch.

No one would argue it: this hatching had everyone on edge, even those who were not directly affected by it. Brothers Mennick and Maddeck continued their lives as apprentice healers. They helped make medicines, inventory supplies, hold down patients, suture their wounds, and try to soothe their anxious families. And of course Menny and Maddy were apt at different tasks, and they were given more assignments to support that. But was it difficult to focus on their jobs? Oh yes!
But then it happened. The humming that everyone knew. The one sound that could make everyone move as one had finally begun! That thrumming of hundreds of dragons supporting their next generation and chiming in with their hope.
Maddeck was hard at work at that time. His shift had just begun and he knew that he would be needed in the infirmary. Ailments and injuries did not just stop happening just because they were more inconvenient during a hatching.
But there was one catch, and that was that the Hatching could be counted on to bring in a few new patients. Most were minor, but sometimes those injuries needed immediate attention, so a small group of staff were sent to the Sands to keep vigil. Along with tables of food, there was a table for the Healers, with stretchers and basic first aid for their patients, off to the side and out of the way.
Mennick was on his bed and he lay beside a beautiful blonde toddler. He had had a long day at work and several hours to spend with Maddy and their adopted daughter Silvie. It had been a struggle to get her to bed, and sleep was always difficult too. But then the humming started and it was all for naught. Of course they would go to the Hatching. Almost everybody was going if they weren't working. He pulled some warmer clothes --pants and a jacket-- over Silvie's pajamas and wrapped her in a blanket before carrying her off to the hatching Sands.

Power was centre stage and that was perfect. Despite their initial strength progress had stalled. Fortunately that just allowed enough time for the audience to gather. Nearer the candidates than the rest of the clutch Power had plenty of room to move. Hopping, twisting, rolling; this dragon was intent on being hatched first. A triumphant squeal rang from inside the egg when a single shard of egg fell away. A whirling blue eye appeared in gap, staring at the candidates before quickly retreating. The tip of a nose thrust through the small space, nostrils flaring as the youngster took their first breaths of outside air. Murmurs rippled through the spectators at the sight. The colour of the nose was undeniably... yellow?
Back among the other eggs. Support gave a large jolt. Their single motion complete the egg settled back into stillness.

As the stands started to fill up V' ran her hand along Lithustoth's jaw and then turned to take her allocated place; shoulders back, chin up, jaw set, eyes flicking around to take in the dignitaries as they were ferried in. All the Lords of the north would have their eyes on her girl right now, and if her hatchlings were as healthy as everyone hoped she was sure that they'd step up their attempts to curry favour. What would the Weyrleaders do? Would they start picking favourites? Encourage all the Holds to lavish the Weyr with gifts and fine tithes?
V' reached the stands just as the candidates started to file in and took her place of honour, a place that had always been occupied by an elegant well schooled goldrider in the past. V' sat with her feet planted firmly on the ground and slightly apart, and leaned forward with one forearm on her knee to get the best view of her dragon and her eggs.
The welcoming hum echoed all through the Weyr now and Lithustoth watched with satisfaction as the singing dragons swooped in to watch her hatchlings enter the world. Welcome Lerenth, she sent privately to the sire of the little clutch, the little ray of hope for the North. Just sing with me and welcome our hatchlings into the world, there's nothing else in the world I want right now. If not for Lerenth they might not have these precious eggs, he had flown the best that day and there was no doubt in her mind that this meant any other sire would have resulted in a weaker clutch. They will be glorious.
Glorious, and yellow.
Yellow?
As the murmurs ran through the cavern V' leaned forward even further, eyes wide and breath caught in her throat. Was that a gold?

The candidate had been on time, if just startled to hear the eggs were hatching, the young candidate creeping to the Sands, and now, here she stood, watching the eggs. And it seemed Power was eager to be in the world, the girl watching with some curiousity. Greens having clutches... It was.... Highly unusual she supposed, but wqith how hectic life was due to plague, they needed them to have hatchlings now. The candidate wasn't going to let optimism cloud her notions, though -- this was a small clutch and not at all like a normal gold. No, she would watch and do her duty, but this was... All odd and curious, and the girl looked over when Power began cracking their shell, hands folded dutifully. RThat egg was fascinating indeed, and the girl blinked a long, slow, calm blink as she watched, listening to the murmurs. Oh, yellow was intriguing, was it already ill, or, more likely a bronze or gold? She'd no other idea why it might be yellow, after all-- and a gold could be so helpful. But who knew anymore....

Mennick / Stands / Healer, mind Up in the stands, the sleepy healer tried to locate certain individuals so he could keep an eye on them. His brother Maddeck and Cliviri. He made sure Silvie was comfortable before looking out over the Sands. He could see some movement, heard a squeal, and felt his heart flutter with excitement, and perhaps just a little bit of longing. He heard murmurs of a yellow snout and automatically assigned "gold" to the first to take their first breath.
Maddeck / Sands / Healer, medic Closer to the action than Mennick, Maddeck spared a glance when he saw movement out of the corner of his eye. These eggs were quite active and so his attention was stolen more than once. He thought he had seen the "yellow" snout, but surely it must actually be bronze or brown, maybe even gold. Come to think of it, since this was a green's clutch, which no one had ever seen, perhaps there would be strange differences from a gold, such as smaller metallics. However, since the sire was blue, one would think brown, blue, or green would hatch. Intriguing.

Could it be?
D'lana sat up tall in her chair beside V' and tried to catch a glimpse of W'dol's face on the other side of the young greenrider.
To her that muzzle looked golden, it had only been a glimpse but it had looked more gold than anything else. Was Pern answering their desperate hopes? Could a green clutch a queen? Such a thing was unheard of in firelizards but firelizards and dragons were so very different. If it was a gold....
But, no, she was looking at this the wrong way.
If it wasn't a gold, what was it? A starkly yellowish green? A bronze? The light of the glows wasn't good enough for her to discount either, and either was more likely than a gold from a green; that would be a fool's hope.
This is a fool's hope anyway right? Liarth pointed out with a laugh and the feeling of a smirk. A green clutching at all seemed impossible a turn ago, why shouldn't she clutch a gold - or a pink or a purple if she fancies?
D'lana shifted her stance and resisted the urge to roll her eyes at her dragon. Don't start. If he wasn't careful the lackadaisical oaf would make her crack a smile.

The mutters and whispers of the crowd were of no concern to Power. They could think and say what they wanted, Power didn't care. The nose withdrew and was replaced by a similarly coloured claw. The claw of a wing to be exact. It tentatively and somewhat awkwardly poked at the edge of the small hole. Before long another claw joined it, most likely from the other wing. There was some shuffling before the egg exploded outward. The little dragonet using the force of spreading their wings at the weak point to shatter their prison. Wings flared the newborn sat in the remains of their eggs. She was here. She was healthy. She was green. Well... mostly. Starting at her nose, spreading down her back and over her wings, the youngster was peppered with yellow markings. More yellow than any green had right to be. There was no argument, this wasn't a yellowish green, her flecks were definitely yellow. Yet as fluid from her egg dried, it was clear that no part of this green held the telltale shimmer of a metallic hatchling.
Power Green stood for a moment, long enough for her audience to drink in the sight of her. Small wings were held outstretched, what little length there was to them ended in an already pronounced point. The green was slender and compact, no unnecessary length to slow her down. As suddenly as she hatched the green launched forward. Now that she had her freedom she was determined to make the most of it, a determined streak as she rushed at the candidates. There was no aggression in the brightly whirling blue of the dragons eyes as she ran toward the youths.

Of course it wasn't a gold, V' felt stupid for even having the thought when the little green burst free of her shell, and as Lithustoth crooned to the newborn and sent her a wave of love and welcome.
Really though, V' decided, she didn't have to feel that stupid for her mistake; the green's markings were.... Now, V' might not have lived her whole life in Weyrs like some people had but she knew enough by now to realise that those markings were way too yellow to be normal, she'd never seen anything like it and she - like the rest of the Weyr - had seen every living green in the north. Who cared about that right now though, she was alive and healthy and beautiful!
As the hatchling bounded towards the candidates V' grinned crookedly and leaned back comfortably in her seat. "Ah, a green out first then," she said loudly enough to be heard by the assembled high born folk. "That's lucky that is, a good omen for the rest of the clutch."

F’ked and Blue Lerenth Lerenth crooned to Power as the egg wobbled its way across the sands. F’ked blinked and rubbed his eyes. He was seeing things surely. A yellow baby? He wondered glancing at his blue who’s whole attention was focused down below.
And now Support was showing signs of movement with just one large jolt. F’ked suspected that egg would crack suddenly, all at once. As you wish Lithustoth. I will sing the loudest…. Or second loudest, he bowed his head demurely to the green. And welcome them all with joy! Lerenth welcomed Green Power with joy. Their beautiful girl!
Servitor Loryan He wasn’t close enough to see much. Not with all the candidates in the way. Loryan leaned left. He leaned right. He could see the eggs moving, and the candidates shifting, but that was about it. He huffed impatiently. He wanted to see dragons!
Oh! Oh there it was. Or rather she, Loryan corrected himself as he looked over the yellow speckled, green hide. “Interesting,” he murmured.
Candidate Turanves Right. They were ready for this. Turanves took a deep breath as Power made the first play. A small chip flaked away from the shell. A happy blue eye followed by a snout that was yellow. Gold? He wondered. If it was, then all the girls would be going ga-ga. Bronzes could look a bit gold-ish too. He shuffled his feet as they waited and Support gave just one shake. Maybe it wasn’t ready yet?
He jumped a moment as Power shattered her shell. She wasn’t a gold, or a bronze, but mostly green. Turan admired the way she’d demolished her shell. She was quite clever using a small amount of power to the best use. He stood his ground as the young green came barreling towards the candidates.

A green.
D'lana's heart sank a little even as she smiled at V's declaration of good fortune; at least the girl hadn't been crude as well as smug. "Indeed," she agreed aloud, "it seems the fate of us all rests upon green dragon wings now." A gold would have been... it would have been indescribable to see, she could image the joy that would have spread throughout the cavern but a green was still good; if her mother was anything to go by the odd looking little hatchling would bear eggs of her own one day and small though her clutches might be at least they might be frequent too. Might. Who knew if a green who had not touched firestone would clutch every time she rose? This was all new, and all they could do was press on with hope.
As the green charged towards the candidates D'lana had to fight the urge to lean forward, the hatchling didn't look vicious in the least but she could still easily do some damage by mistake!

Maddeck / Sands / Healer, medic A flurry of astonished voices brought Maddeck's attention back to the Sands. That beautiful dragon had finally shed her shell and spread her wings. She was a green, but with yellow markings. And by all appearances she was hale and healthy. He watched her charge off to meet the candidates, and longer to make sure she did not hurt anyone. It was time for the healers to watch the hatching unfold.
Mennick / Stands / Healer, mind Mennick couldn't see what color she was until the hatchling dragon burst from her egg. She was strong and determined, that much was clear. What was unclear was if she was gold and green or just green. The young healer listened to the voices in the crowd, particularly looking for some knowledgeable faces to go with those voices. The consensus seemed to be that she was green-and-yellow. Did that mean anything in particular? Were all of the hatchlings going to have surprising markings? Were the dragons with strange markings going to hatch their own strange-marking offspring? He would try to stay calm about this with Silvie on his lap.
