Profile:

Who is this person? What are they like? What has their life been like so far?

Kiki is a hybrid bakeneko and an overall happy person. She very short for her age and is often teased by her friends as being cute, which she's fine with. She knows she is adorable. She owns it. Kiki is super energetic and expressive. Mostly just physically expressive though because Kiki was born mute and is unable to speak. The academy was willing to provide charms to help combat this but Kiki was just fine with who she was. Despite the fact she can't speak Kiki has found other ways to show the world how she feels. Kiki does have to try harder with her art since she can't really speak for it. You can see a lot of her personality and passion in her creations. She is an aspiring fashion designer but loves painting and anything that involves color. She knows sign language fluently as the Academy taught her this as a freshling. Kiki however still finds it difficult express her emotions with signs alone. Still, her friends learned it too so they could understand her when she tried. Kiki prefers to express her feelings with body language and facial expressions. You can sign your happy all you want but who would believe it if you couldn't show them? At times Kiki is known to get excited and instead act out an event because its more accurate than the corresponding signs. It is for this reason that Kiki is currently a reigning Charades champion.

What's their family like? What's an event that's affected them so far?

Kiki was abandoned just by her birth parents. Her damaged stone was found by low class neko couple who had desperately wanted a child. When she awoke her new parents noticed immediately she was a hybrid. They came to the conclusion that since Kiki was clearly not a pure blood that she was simply discarded for this reason, not the crack in the stone. The couple were overjoyed raising their new baby girl but that quickly turned to concern when Kiki never uttered a sound. While everything seemed to be intact it was later discovered at the Academy that Kiki was actually born with no vocal cords. Miraculously both Kiki's esophagus and windpipe fully developed. Some nightmares were not this lucky and developed complications from damage to their neck during awakening. For all intensive purposes Kiki was what is referred to as mute, or someone with the inability to produce speech.

Her mother was a seamstrice which she was always fond of. Growing up they didn't really have much. The family had food, and a roof over there head but still struggled to get by. The clothes she wore her mothered had made from linens. As she grew Kiki learned to communicate through gestures or pointing which her parents understood. Her parent did their best to raise her despite all her differences and the disapproval of their community. This was no place for to raise a pink hybrid child.

When Kiki was a couple years old they decided Kiki would be better off getting an education at the Academy. There she could be provided with all the things her parents couldn't right now. With all their love and the last of their savings they sent Kiki away to the Academy knowing she would have a better future there than she would living at home. For awhile young Kiki didn't understand why her parent's sent her away but as she grew she realized the sacrifice they made for her and she was determined to return one day and repay everything they'd given for her.

How do they feel about their own race, as well as other races?

As a young bakeneko, she grew up in the poorer outskirts so it was easier for her parents to keep her sheltered from judgement. You could say she was not exposed to their cultural norms. Her community, like most bakeneko placed high value on physical traits within bloodline, such as pure fur colors. Kiki was a pink furred hybrid who stood below average on the height charts. It was very unlikely her community would accept her much less let her court and pass on those traits. She loved who she was and who her parents were so that was good enough for her.

Up until arriving at the Academy Kiki hadn't even know other races existed, or at the least what they looked like. She knew she didn't really look like her bakeneko parents but not what that meant. Now that she's been here for awhile she doesn't really have any bias against anyone. Kiki doesn't like to judge people but hasn't really educated herself about other races and cultures enough to draw any conclusions anyways. She believes everyone should be free to express themselves. However since she is so small in stature she can be cautious when first approaching a person much taller than her. She's happy to report some of the nicest people she's met have been larger races, like chomps. You shouldn't judge a book by its cover! Growing up she didn't see much variation in appearance so seeing how unique everyone is outside her village sometimes leaves her in awe.

And how do/did they feel about their Academy House or University?

Kiki loves Arkham House. Kiki's room was on a particularly artsy floor. She currently shares a room with someone who wants to design jewelry so they make a good pair. Kiki has never really been big on all the core classes. Reading isn't her forte and finds stuff like history boring. Being in Arkham has allowed her to freely express herself outside of class and socialize with kids who are just as creative and openminded as herself. Innovation is encouraged in all Arkham students. While she prefers to stick to artistic creativity, the house is home to many literary creatives as well as some up and coming inventors. But! that hasn't stopped Kiki from trying to befriend everyone she meets there.

What are their goals for the future?

Like a lot of artistic nightmares, Kiki wants to design clothes. She grew up watching her mother sew and alter other people's clothes but also make the clothes they wore themselves. However Kiki doesn't really care about whats trendy or considered to be in. She likes to make stuff she'd want to wear and her favorite outfit is a pair of customized overalls and a tshirt. When she graduates Academy she plans to go home and see her parents. She didn't really know if the place where she grew up would support her or her fashion dreams but if nothing else she could always sell her style elseware and send money home. Kiki has considered attending Grendel for an official fashion degree but that would only be if she could get a scholarship.

What are some things they like or dislike?

Kiki adores bright colors. Her favorite color is purple (incase you couldnt guess). She dislikes greyscale color schemes since in her opinion they lack life and seen very sad and stiff. Kiki is always excited to try new things since she is very hands on. She dislikes general studies for the most part. She doesn't like having to memorize things then take tests on them. To her its pointless. The only thing academically she finds good time in would be mathematics because measurement is a big part of fashion. She likes socializing and being with people, so in the same sense she dislikes being left out or being neglected by her peers. She is very energetic and excitable so unless shes asleep or focusing on something Kiki is always up on the move.. or at least bouncing in place.

What do they like to do in their free time?

Kiki likes to socialize. She's most happy when she's with other people. Though not very artsy of her, she enjoys playing videogames with her friends on the junior lounge YBoxes. She likes doodling and sketching, carrying around her own sketch book for future design ideas. Most recently she's found fun in making accessories with her dorm roomate. She's proud to say a couple of the Arkham kids are sporting those very accessories.

Strengths:

Kiki is a naturally happy and compassionate bakeneko. Her outlook is always optimistic so she is able to see the silver lining to any situation.
Kiki is very accepting not only of people but of criticism too. Negative feedback only encourages her to try harder.

Keeping an open mind about everything makes her easy to confide in.
She has a very likable personality so its never hard for her to make new friends.
Kiki is able to understand that sometimes to make friends you need be less of an excitable extrovert and more fluffy cute and quiet.

Faults:

Kiki is overly trusting. Having been accepted from the moment she got the Academy she has never had a reason not to instantly trust someone she meets. This unfortunately would make her someone really easy to manipulate. It is possible since Kiki has never met a bad person that she'd lack the common sense to be able to sense the danger.

Kiki has issues expressing negative emotions like sadness or anger. Where as she can empathize with others and express remorse or sorrow. She doesn't really get upset personally so should something really bad happen in her life it would be a struggle to cope with it properly. This event will probably be a key point in her future character development as well as the point above.

RP Prompt:
Prompt Four
A smart-mouthed peer just told your Nightmare that they're a failure to their race. How do they react?

It was the beginning of another semester and Kiki had just left her history class. The history teachers liked for you to tell the class about yourself and as you would expect part of Kiki's introduction she would say she was a bakeneko. Her parents were both bakeneko and she had the ears of a bakeneko so as far as she was concerned thats what she was. As the translator relayed the information Kiki noticed a group of neko girls at the back of the class eyeing her and whispering. She hadn't ever seen the girls before so perhaps they were new here and would like to be friends! When class ended Kiki turned to try and greet the girls but they had already left.

Later that day she was taking the scenic route back to her house when she was stopped by the three girls from earlier. Kiki was rather small for her age so they had a good height advantage on her. The three were dressed in expensive clothes which Kiki thought were quite beautiful. She greeted the three with a smile and a friendly wave. The one on her left had lovely white fur, pure as snow. The girl on her right had short black fur almost like coal. But the girl starring her down in the center was a pure calico neko. From what Kiki had learned about her race, nekos with calico coats were very admired.

"Hey look girls!" said the calico. "Its the freak who had the nerve to call themselves a bakeneko". Well that wasn't very nice."Yeah! Its not bad enough they are mucking up our bloodlines with their mixed genes and pink fur but now people will think we have things in common with that!" responded the white fur. "You're a disgrace to bakeneko kind!" lashed the black neko. Kiki had no idea why these girls were being so cruel to her. Even if she could speak up she wouldnt even know what to say, she was in shock. Everyone at the academy had been so sweet to her up to this point. "Nothing to say for yourself freak?" mocked the calico. "Oh wait! Thats right. You cant even talk!". And with that the three girls stormed out in a fit of laughter.

Kiki kept her head down and returned to her room a few minutes later almost in tears. She couldn't remember the last time she cried, perhaps back when she was small. She could handle constructive criticism on an assignment but this was personal. What she was feeling was hard to describe.. but it hurt and for the first time in awhile she really missed home. What did they mean by mixed genes.. what else was she?! To be fair Kiki knew she was different but never really considered the idea of being a hybrid.

For awhile she stood in the mirror starring at herself, and hugging her unique tail. She always loved her pink fur but she had read about her culture and its true that her colors weren't exactly normal. For a moment she even considered the voice charm the school had provided. Perhaps that would make her more normal? She thought of those girls who mock her, then of her friends who support her, then lastly of her mother. When she was younger her mother would hold her and tell her she was perfect just how she was and to never let anyone tell her she wasn't. The thought of this made her smile softly.

So what if she wasn't normal... just because she wasn't a textbook bakeneko doesn't make her a disgrace to an entire race. She was..special. Being different is what made her Kiki. If being a perfect bakeneko meant she would be just like those three girls then she definitely didn't want to be normal. Then it occurred to her that yes, what those girls said hurt her feelings... a lot, but she cared more about the people who loved her than those who didn't. She is small, and pink, and the end of her tail is fluffy. That's who she is, she didn't need to speak to know that.. though having the translator does help in mixed classes. If someone wants to get to know her they will but if they dont then.. she shouldn't let what they think of her affect her self image.

It was about at this time that her roomie burst in having caught wind of the event from earlier. She was ready to go to war for anyone talking to Kiki like that but Kiki just embraced her. There was no use filling the air with more hate. She did however have one request. If she was mucking up the great bakeneko bloodline with her mixed genes, she wanted to know what those were. Although she wasn't really sure the sign for it so she spelt it out. Her friend was happy to oblige and the two set off to see about setting up a genetic test for Kiki. Would the results change anything? Probably not. Kiki would always be a bakeneko but it would surely make her intro more interesting!

Critique incoming!

Just as a note, sign language is actually often taught to young childred who cannot yet speak so that they can sign their feelings and have an effective way to communicate with their parents before they are able to verbalize. It's super freaky, but it's been proven to lead to less temper tantrums in kids who cannot aptly express themselves, so I think that KiKi feeling like sign language is not an effective way to express one's self might be misplaced. But you can always come up with another reason as to why she prefers other means of expressions. Maybe she feels her use of her ears, facial expressions and tail are emotive enough? Who knows! You tell me.

Why was Kiki born mute? Usually such issues that are permanent in the NMA world come from damaged soulstones. Like a hairline fracture for example can result in blindness. Major breaks would cause death and the magic to be released from the stone. Does she choose to be a mute, did her tongue not develop properly, etc. Those who are physically mute may have problems with the parts of the human body required for speech (the esophagus, vocal cords, lungs, mouth, or tongue). So I would love to see a little more research done so we can know exactly where her problem stems from.

When you say 'cultural norms' for the bakaneko, can you expand on what you mean and why you think she never would have been exposed to them, despite being poor?

While I think that your prompt response shows that she has issues with negative emotions, I am wondering why the girls were so harsh. Were their parents from high society? People at the Academy see hybrids all the time, so hybrids are not as taboo the longer you have lived in Asphodel. Are they perhaps new arrivals? Not important, but just something to consider for characters who have harsher tones towards hybrids!

Edits are pink in the original text, but here is a summery

1. She doesn't believe signing alone purveys enough emotion for how she feels. Kiki bursts with positive energy and not being able to speak shes' got to get it out in other ways so people can understand. She relies heavily on body language and facial expressions to let people know the tone behind her signed words.

2. She ended up mute because her stone was damaged, whether this happened before or after her birth parents (or parent) discarded her stone who knows. Not entirely sure what type of crack would produce a loss of vocal cords so if you have an idea feel free to tell me and ill add it. I did some research on mute people and noticed that people can be born without their voice boxes/vocal cords. In some cases this is extremely dangerous because other vital parts dont form correctly either. When even something as little as your cords getting bent happens it becomes extremely difficult to control simple things like volume or clarity, which i know from personal experience. Kiki was very lucky and just happened to not have developed the ability to speak at all.

3. As far as cultural norms with that I was thinking along the line of survival of the prettiest. From reading the lore I got the feeling that Bakeneko cared a lot about appearances to the point they sort of vein. It says fur color matters a lot to them especially in seeking mates. From this i gathered that a very closed community might frown upon things like odd colored fur or hybrids because that would mess up their perfect gene pools. Kiki's parents wanted to protect her from any judgement so they hid her away. Not being part of the main village as much it was easy for them not to draw attention to her so she'd never be hurt. Of course they taught her of their religion and of their beliefs but not so much of the..your not proper by our societies rules.

4. You had a point so i decided to make it so they are indeed new, and from an upper class.. perhaps a gated community? Very snooty.. very plastic. They are a Nightmare Academy Mean Girls trio. I figured Kiki needed a small dose of realization that not everyone she meets will love her and want to be her friend but that shouldn't destroy her when it happens.
