- Few are born exceptional; Nemesis was no different. Born as Victoria “Vicki” Reen, she led a mundane life, from the woes of adolescence down to her simplistic career goals as a would-be teacher. Thanks to the machinations of a few overzealous scientists, her home of Chicago would change forever as they found themselves irradiated by mysterious energies. Despite at all, nothing had changed, or so it seemed. From alleged hallucinations to the voices of dozens, her powers began to manifest five years after. At the time, she was certain she was becoming mad, but found comfort in her childhood friend Stephanie Hale, who helped Vicki relax and, over time, understand her powers. Perhaps the two would’ve grown old in a different life, because destiny had other plans.
One night, the two women would find themselves the unwilling target of a serial killer and pyromaniac called the Wicker Man, who found a cruel appreciation for burning young women alive. As the two were headed home from an evening out together, he followed them into a dark alley, rendered them unconscious, and carried them off to his basement. Too panicked to control her powers, Vicki was helpless as the Wicker Man burnt Stephanie alive, chanting, “Burn the b***h!” over and over. A monster was born that night. Fear turned to hate, and hate manifested in a strength she never knew. With a thought, the Wicker Man split apart, painting the basement in a deep crimson.
The feeling of helplessness ate away at her, and she vowed to never be weak again. Adopting the name of the goddess of retribution, she became Nemesis, the Ultimate Enemy. As the world fell into the Glory Days, she cared not for the work of heroes. She sought only to become the strongest, demonstrating her power to control others she deemed beneath her. She went through great lengths to humiliate others and prove her will superior. However, as she became more and more powerful, she lost interest. She viewed world domination and other such ambitions tedious and unnecessary, choosing instead to withdraw, in the hopes that someone, anyone, would be worthy to be her foe. However, with age came a desire to leave a legacy, and she sought lovers whom would, perhaps, give her a strong heir. All were disappointments. Even the great Mr. Invincible, of whom she deceived, provided her with a child weaker than she and her father, the daughter who would eventually become Olympia.
