While it’s unclear what caused the emergence of superhumans, many regard the 1956 disaster at the Normandy National Laboratory outside the city as the source. While being labeled as a contained event officially, the nuclear accident came as a result of a faulty reactor explosion following a sloppy safety test, and the following radiation imbued the everyman with the potential for superhuman powers. In the span of a few years, the first superhumans would emerge, starting with criminals and terrorists who took advantage of their gifts to benefit themselves. However, heroes emerged as well, the first generation’s greatest heroes beginning an era where good continuously prevailed over evil.

While not necessarily being an official date for when it all began, 1962 saw the emergence of men and women who could levitate objects with their minds, soar across the skies, lift vehicles with ease, run at unbelievable speeds, adopt the qualities of whatever they touched, expel radioactive blasts from their hands; extraordinary people with phenomenal powers. This era would come to be known as The Glory Days, the era of heroes, the time of the mighty Mr. Invincible, Captain Cosmo, The Dynamic Duo, Minuteman, Olympia, and many others (see the timeline below). While most villains were defeated and imprisoned, the era would reach its conclusion in the late nineties. However, March 15, 2012 saw a shocking prison break, as villainy returns by the dozens, prompting a new age of superheroes.

The story so far:

It is the year 2012 and unexpected breakout occurs in the nation's most important prison for superhuman aggressors. In response, Criss-Cross, renowned superhero and former member of 90's superhero team The Alliance, breaks retirement and attempts to assemble a makeshift team of superheroes to restore order. Unfortunately, he is unsuccessful, as his former teammates are either missing or reluctant to return. Blue Devil, a foe hellbent on revenge against the heroine Olympia, rampages through Chicago. Olympia, having retired from the hero life to raise her daughter, does not answer his call to arms. Despite being too weak to defeat the villain, Criss-Cross valiantly engages the villain anyway. Unwilling to see Criss-Cross die at the hands of her old foe, she goes to join the fight, but is too late to save him. Narrowly managing to muster the strength to defeat him, Olympia vows to a dying Criss-Cross that she will see his plan through, reforming The Alliance and enlisting heroes old and new to her cause.

Criss-Cross' sacrifice inspires many to join, and The New Alliance grows in strength, seeking out villains old and new. Despite their initial success, overcoming a number of foes such as The Fearsome Four and the Aberration, a plot orchestrated by the villainous Mr. Fraus and Legerdemain culminates into a scandal where the heroes are deceived into attacking innocent security, believing them as supervillains. The young team faces public scrutiny until a hidden ally takes the fall and reveals that the heroes were deceived after all.

Eager to leave the scandal behind them, they rebrand themselves as the Valiant Dawn. They resume their work, driven to redeem themselves in the eyes of the people, but evil never rests, this time developing a team of "heroes" to rival them. This new team, Noble Fury, is comprised of villains-in-disguise, mercenaries, and the darker side of vigilantes, posing as token heroes. A number of other teams/organizations exist within the lore, all equally important, but that's a story for another time.

Read the rules below, because you will not be accepted if you do not.

1. Please remain active! If you will be absent from the story, please inform the crew or myself so we can progress ahead of you, or if the role is vital enough, take on a temporary/permanent replacement. I understand that you have your own lives.
2. If you haven’t already noticed, we’re entitled to follow Gaia Online’s rules. It’s their site!
3. If or when you have new ideas, things like new locations, don’t be afraid to share. It’s our story, and as such, your creativity is appreciated always. I’m willing to listen, though please use common sense.
4. Romance and drama is encouraged always, though if things get too nasty, be considerate and time-skip.
5. Don’t god-mod! It includes auto-hitting or controlling other characters without the user’s permission.
6. Let’s keep this semi-literate and above. I’m not expecting fifteen paragraphs all the time, but at least put some effort into your submission so other writers have enough to work with. I’d say five sentences is the bare minimum for a post.
7. If you’d like to join, put the word hero into your join request so I know you actually read the rules. Include a sample of your writing at the length of a paragraph (unless I invited you or already know).
8. Do not begin posting until your character has been approved by myself or the crew.
9. Do not speak out-of-character too often in the story. It’s okay occasionally, but there’s a thread for that.
10. When quoting other people to notify them that you’ve replied, don’t quote their entire post.
11. No, there is no limit to the amount of characters you can have, just as long as you keep up with them.
12. You are expected to be respectful of other role-players. It’s common courtesy towards others.
13. Please include a date and time if you're introducing a setting on a thread. It helps to organize things chronologically.
