(Taking place during the Masquerade Ball as a continuation after this post)
After washing up in the restroom, wiping the perspiration from his face, looking over his costume for food stains, and replacing his mask so that it was fastened securely to his head, Jack was finally ready to return to the ballroom. He was admittedly nervous about dancing and he didn't want to accidentally tread on anyone's feet, but so long as he avoided that, how hard could it have been?
Very, he answered himself, recalling the intricate dances he had looked up during his research of masquerade balls. There were a wide variety of waltzes, tangos, and - ironically - fox-trots that he had watched videos on but hadn't thought to practice or truly familiarize himself with other than by name. He thought it might have been useful to know in case it came up in conversation, but he hadn't imagined it would come down to his attempting one.
If he was going to play his part properly, however, he thought he might as well go all the way. It was he, after all, who had suggested a dance to the Lady Phoenix in the first place. It wouldn't have been proper to back down now just because he was a little nervous. As long as he had on a mask and acted confident enough, what would it matter? He just had to ask if she would teach him the most basic steps of the simplest waltz she knew and then follow her lead.
Perhaps it was an awful giveaway regarding his background that he required her assistance on the matter, but her mere consent to teach him suggested that she didn't mind tolerating his company beyond just networking purposes.
Provided, of course, that she decided to meet him out on the dance floor after all. One reason he had parted ways with the phoenix for a detour to the men's restroom was to allow her a chance to discreetly slip away. If it turned out she had other obligations or engagements she deemed a higher priority than teaching some no-name stranger how to dance, Jack didn't want to hinder her.
