Age: roughly 15 (birthday next week)
Appearance: Green eyed, light skinned boy with short dirty blond hair and one streak dyed green on the left side of his face.

Personality Traits:
(Full descriptions in quest)
Virtues:
Assume the Best of Everyone: if it isn't obviously malicious, it clearly isn't.

Too Trusting: Very easy to abuse his trust
Nosy: He wants to know. So much.
The Space Cauldron

Prompt:
Recent rainfall has kept temperatures cool but one of the parks can’t handle all the water draining into it. The water has turned it into a strange swamp and, in addition to the terrible smell, people have claimed to see strange floating lights—or, weirder—a strange, hulking figure that seems right at place in the swamp. Some have described it as being seven feet tall, covered in moss and weeds and mud and who knows what else; while no one has been able to confirm this, if you venture too close you might wind up observing something strange, yourself. The park no longer feels safe and if you wander too close you may feel hateful eyes upon you. You may even wind up chased out by a monstrous swamp monster, but if you try to approach him or interact otherwise, he seems to disappear. It’s probably best just to stay away from the park until the water dries up, just in case.

Even before moving to Destiny City, Toby had heard all kinds of strange stories about the place. Lots of wild tales on the internet. Fantastic things, exciting things, terrifying and insane things. But none of it ever ended up on "real" news, always just strange stories shared around. And now he lived here, he just had to see for himself what all these stories stemmed from.

Weird monsters in a swampy park? A perfect thing to investigate. No way there was actually anything big and deadly here...right? Whatever the case, he decided he had to know. His parents were used to him wandering off into the woods, and he always came back, so they didn't stop him from setting out.

Thus, he found himself at the edge of this "swamp," a light rain drizzling down over his hat. The sound of the drizzle almost helped push back the unpleasant feeling of being watched. Almost. He rubbed idly at his cheek as he regarded the trees beyond, and with only a slight wrinkle of his nose against the smell, he set off within. Poking his polished branch hiking stick into the ground in front of him, he carefully advanced, not wanting to find himself covered in smelly mud as soon as he started.

It wasn't a stealthy advance--he was cracking twigs and pushing branches as he went, pausing to look at unusual patterns on trees, and take pictures of things he thought looked cool. There was every possibility anyone in the woods nearby would hear him. Easily snuck up upon, or intercepted...for now.

Stacey grunted a bit as one of her tall rain boots once again got stuck in the nice mud that had been created with the water drainage into the park. She had wanted to explore the park a bit as the water came, since there didn't seem like there was a chance of drowning at least, but it had become somewhat difficult to move around in almost immediately. Her boots kept getting stuck in the mud seriously wasn't this place supposed to be really grassy? and she was already pretty soaked in general. But she was determined to at least explore a little bit. Especially because there had been reports of some hulking figure or something seen around the park.

At the beginning she figured that powering up might have been the better idea but thought better of it as there might be people out and about still with all of the strange reports. But she wanted to check to see if this was actually a youma or if the swamp gas/smell was causing hallucinations in some people. She had seen some "pictures" of the figure, but like pictures of ghosts, one couldn't tell if it was real or if it had been photoshopped.

She poked the ground a bit with her own hiking stick, glad that she had brought such a thick one, but not glad because it was her favorite and would probably need to be replaced after this, and slowly made her way through it. As she was moving along she saw a figure ahead of her, though it actually looked like someone, at least someone not as tall as said swamp monster, and definitely knew it had been the better idea not to power up.

As much as she would have wanted to get closer to start a conversation, it was slow going. And so she yelled, "Hey you! You see anything strange around here yet?" Though she herself didn't want to admit that she felt something strange. Like something was watching her...

He'd been been carefully plodding along for a few minutes, reflecting upon how much nicer it is to hike on a mountain than a swamp. He managed only getting a boot stuck once. He was about six steps past getting it unstuck when a voice called out behind. Toby visibly jumped in surprise, and turned quickly, swaying a bit as the mud sucked on a boot....That's two times, now.

"What's that?" he called out, then shook his head, apparently realizing what was asked. "Er, no...nothing. Actually, it's kind of weird." He gestured around with the hand not gripped to a hiking stick.

"Not enough things moving around," Toby's eyes went upward, hat tipping backward. "But I'unno, I'm no bird watcher or anything, and all this rain..." He shrugged, and carefully moved his way closer to his fellow bog-explorer. "You see anything?"

Well at least I'm not the only one out here investigating. Though neither of us has really seen anything. Stacey thought as she made her way a bit closer to the guy, thought it was hard with all of the mud. "Unfortunately not yet. I suppose that's a good and bad thing right? Good thing if there's nothing, but then there's still that creepy feeling hanging around in the air..."

She poked around with her stick a bit more, taking out the goggles that she had packed with her, hoping she could get some sort of view. It was hard though since the whole area was kind of foggy. She sighed and looked back at him. "Glad I'm not the only one out here though, or should I say I'm glad that we weren't just seeing each other's silhouettes and thinking that the other was a monster."She laughed a bit. Though that would be perfect for a horror movie, but that was when the real monster would have jumped out.

Toby leaned his hiking stick against himself and lifted his hat to scratch his head idly while he grinned and replied, "Well, ya did startle me a bit calling out like that...didn't know you were over there." The hat went back on his head and he shrugged.

After a moment, his expression turned more pensive and he asked, "Do you, uh...well, feel like you're being watched?" He glanced around. "This place is weird. I feel like somethin's gonna jump out any moment." He crossed his arms a moment and shook his head, then with a dramatic flourish grabbed ahold of his stick again. "SO!" He declared before there was any chance of reply. "Wanna go monster hunting together?"

He grinned at her with his cheery, youthful (and more than a little hopeful) grin. He mostly wanted to hide how spooked he really felt by this place. But, surely, he reasoned, those stories he'd read couldn't be real, just...based on weird feelings. Right...? Good to have company.

Stacey laughed again. "Yes sorry, though I'm sure you would have heard me stomping through all of this mud anyway. At least the voice was a better surprise than hearing mud-sucking coming closer and closer to you!" She replied, though felt her face fall a bit when he mentioned being watched. "Unfortunately. I feel like there's something out here. I really wish there was a way to stop all of this strange stuff from happening, and it really only seems to come out during October. Really annoying."

She shuffled her clothing a bit to make sure her jacked and gloves were on her better. It felt like it was getting colder almost. Was that hypothermia? She thought about his suggestion for a minute. "Well... sure. I mean once it gets too dangerous we should probably turn back. Don't want to get lost here and sucked into the mud never to be seen again. But if we can find something, well, we might get a bit internet famous at least."

"It...happens every year?" he asked, clearly somewhat surprised by the idea. "I just moved here a couple months ago, I've read lotsa weird stuff, but it's too crazy to be true...isn't it?" He laughed, only a hint of nervousness showing through. "I don't wanna get lost here, just a little poke around, then home. Completely safe, yeah! Maybe see something cool, probably just a bunch of stinky mud."

He started to turn away, as if to get moving again, then clearly realized something basic, as he abruptly stopped and faced back to her. He stuck out his hand, slightly dirty from prodding at things out here with no gloves, and declared, "Oh yeah! I'm Toby! Nice to meetcha!"

"Well not exactly this flooding. But crazy stuff? Yep. Been here a couple of years myself and while I wasn't around for the events last year." She had kept herself holed up in her apartment mostly watching what had just come out on Netflix, "I have seen a few videos. For example, there was this huge bat attack last year at some festival or something. And they weren't just ordinary bats either." She shook her head and sighed. "It's just crazy."

She nodded however. "Yeah, that sounds like a better idea. Don't want to stay out here too long. Maybe we should go get some hot chocolate or something afterwards so we don't succumb to hypothermia or something." She said, grinning a bit though she grimaced when she looked at her clothing a bit. "Though... a hot wash would probably be better first."

She looked surprised as he turned around and then back and suddenly introduced herself, but she didn't mind. Smiling she took his hand and shook it with her own after taking a bit of time trying to get her glove off. "I'm Stacey. It's nice to meet you too Toby."

After a quick, cheerful shake of Stacey's hand, Toby grinned and nodded before turning away once more. "C'mon," he gestured. "There's bound to be something in this place...right?" He considered what was said, and added softly, "Hopefully not giant bats..."

While pressing onward--carefully, of course--Toby turned toward his new hiking buddy and asked, "So, uh...you ever seen any of the weird things that happen in Destiny City? The TV talks about terrorists and stuff, but my parents say I shouldn't worry about them. And then there's those stories on the internet. They're like something out of an anime!" He actually grinned as he said that, but quickly glanced to the side with a brief nervous look at the sound of the forest shifting some in the rain.

The distraction served to give him Time #3 of getting a boot right in the mud. The bottom few inches of both pant legs were pretty well filthy now, even though he wasn't actually stuck this time, luckily. He shook his foot, and looked back to Stacey for her answer, hoping that he wasn't looking like some stupid kid by chattering like that.

"All right then! You lead the way!" Stacey replied as he was already turning. Well, at least one of them was willing to be at the front. "Hopefully there's something. Not something dangerous, but something, that way mucking through this swamp won't have been a waste at least." The last part she muttered a bit. She was willing to follow Toby around for a bit, but by now she was really just craving a warm sugary drink and maybe wasting the rest of the day watching crime shows.

She couldn't help but shake her head at his question. "I've seen... some weird stuff, though I haven't ever really been in the thick of it. I managed to avoid the hospital thing earlier this year too. But then again, I wouldn't really be interested in a new hospital." She said, laughing a bit. "There have been a few other things, but... I'd really rather not be too close to any of it you know?" Honestly as much as she liked her double life, she felt as if the 2nd half was more of a distraction and a way to waste time than anything. She usually did it when she was bored.

Her talking was cut short as she accidentally bumped into Toby, which was surprising considering how slow they were moving. "Oh shoot, sorry." She had made quite a big splash as they bumped and now even more mud was on them.

"Oh, that hospital? I heard it was terrorists or something, sounded scary," Toby replied.

Before anything else could be said, though, he found himself suddenly covered in more mud. He was surprised for a moment, then laughed a little, shaking his head. "It's okay...but if we're not careful we'll look like swamp monsters before to long!" He tried brushing some off, but really only managed to smear it around.

He shrugged then. "Maybe that's it! People are the monsters in the park." He laughed, and made a pair of lines on his face with the mud on his hand. "Rawr." He snickered again and shook his head. Even if he didn't find anything today, he thought he could have fun in spite of that weird feeling of being watched...

"Yeah, I heard it was terrorists too, but that seems to be the only thing about Destiny City. Terrorists, or at least the only explanation about things. I mean, it could be something else you know?" She wouldn't imply anything magical, but with everyone calling every incident in the city as the result of terrorists, they should really just re-name the city. Or perhaps pay people to move away.

She laughed as he suggested that it could be people in the park being the monsters. "Of course! We have finally solved the mystery!" She said, her laughter dying down a bit. "Or maybe it's just some trees and all of this fog is messing with us." Right? She could only hope so. She really wished though that she could power up and look for whatever was causing the feeling, though she probably wouldn't even be able to catch up with it if it ran.

"You know, even if there IS something out here, maybe it's not dangerous? I mean most animals just want to be left alone right? What if it just wants us to leave it's territory?" It was something to consider at least. Sure, youma had to feed on starseeds, but perhaps some of them were like bears. Hunting for food when needed, but often times just wanted to be left alone.

"I guess it could be something else," Toby allowed, as he started moving again, treading carefully so as to hopefully not get stuck again. "But what would it be? And why would the news always lie about it? What could be so bad..." he trailed off, considering. What if the crazy internet stories were real? Would that really be so much worse than 'terrorists'? Didn't seem like it to him. He just shrugged and pressed onward.

"Well, I hope it's not dangerous, I dunno about you, but I'm not exactly," he lifted his hiking stick and held it like a quarterstaff, "a shaolin monk over here!" After waving it around a bit, he plunked it back to the ground. "But I'unno, I guess you're right. Might be a bit..." he trailed off and looked to the side. "Did you hear that? I think there's something there..." He pointed into the bush, and took a step back.

As much as he was playing it off, this place was starting to really spook him, so rustling in the leaves, not so great. Which lead to him also not checking where he was stepping and planting his backstep directly into yet another soft spot. Boot in mud #4!

"Maybe the news doesn't have all of the information? Or maybe someone's buying them off. It wouldn't be unheard of at least." Just because it was the 21st century didn't mean that the news was all real. "I've been in Destiny City for a while, and trust me, it's crazy around here. I honestly don't know why anyone stays here at this point, though maybe it's because the housing is so cheap." Or at least that could be part of it. She had more reasons that before to stay here, but what had brought her in the first place was the need to get away from her family.

She giggled. "I'm actually a personal trainer so I'm pretty fit to do some fighting. And I take self defense classes too! But if it IS a giant swamp monster well... not too sure regular fighting techniques would do well against it. Maybe a flamethrower or something like an actual weapon." She replied, though when he made his exclamation, she jumped a bit and looked to where he was pointing.

Toby was right that there seemed to be leaves rustling. Though since they didn't seem very tall, she didn't believe there was some monster hiding behind them. Or maybe... the monster was in the mud?! Well it should have attacked them already at least. But instead of waiting for it, she took her walking stick and poked it through the bush, trying to see if she could find anything.

The rustling, spurned on by a sudden jab with a stick, materialized into a fully formed raccoon! At least, that's what it looked like in the moment to a very startled Toby, as it bolted out toward him for some reason. He sidestepped it as it bolted out, so it didn't jump on him or anything, but with a foot already wedged in the mud, he toppled over in the process with a surprised yelp.

Without moving to get up, he looked up at Stacey with a sheepish grin. "So, personal trainer and defense classes, huh? Maybe I should try that..." His gaze went in the direction of the raccoon, already out of sight. "Cuz that was sad." He wasn't gonna admit it, but he was super relieved it was just a raccoon. Maybe it wasn't such a good idea to go poking through the woods after all...
