Quote:
Survey Mission 39I
Location: Tinúm, Yucatán, Mexico
General Debriefing: A smaller, non-tourist-attractive ruin in the surrounding area of the Chichen Itza ruins has recently been experiencing an influx of activities of the paranormal variety. A recently executed surveillance mission has found the cause for the influx, and a new team has been assembled to find and exterminate it.

MECHANICS
* MECHANICS: RP assembling a team, as necessary, before heading towards the Lighthouse portal to request a portal to Survey Mission 39I.

Entrance
You make your way from the nearby outpost where you were originally ported to the ruins. For better cover against overly curious tourists, it was suggested that you leave at nightfall. Upon arrival you approach the unguarded entrance and feel a sudden weight in the atmosphere. Roll 1d4 and match it to the text below. This effect will carry throughout the entire mission.

1: Your weapon is very scared and keeps insisting that you leave and never come back
2: Your weapon is very weepy and it's freaking you out.
3: Your weapon is crazy angry and won't stop yelling at you about every little thing.
4: Your weapon is very whiny and it's really, really annoying. Really...really annoying.

Inside
Once inside you all follow the darkest entrance -- there was a small notation in the previous mission's report. It leads to a series of rooms and additional tunnels, the exact details of which were not in that same report. Roll 1d100 and match the roleplay and any reactions the text below. Players can continue rolling until any of the players roll a BOSS ENCOUNTER, in which case the BATTLE PHASE begins. See below for battle phase mechanics.

1 - 20: The room is empty but you notice the walls are stained kind of odd. There's trails of fresh, black goo leading into and out of the room. You make the mistake of stepping too far inside and setting off a trap. -2HP.
21 - 40: An empty room with what look like display stands arranged in the center. There are gooey black statues and streaks of black goo all over the place. For a second the statues look as though they're moving, but they stop as soon as you double-check.
41 - 60: The room is full of empty chests that were probably once full of all kinds of treasures. The black goo is in here as well, nearly covering every inch of the floor. You see something glimmer and reach for it, inadvertently setting off a trap. -2HP.
61 - 80: Off to your left is a dark hallway that just...draws attention for some reason, and despite that voice in the back of your head telling you to back away you just can't seem to do it. You hear one of your teammates calling your attention and luckily that seems to do the trick.
81 - 100: BOSS ENCOUNTER:
- One of you finally finds the right tunnel, and at the end of that tunnel you all realize why it was getting darker and darker the further you went down. Near the end there is a row of entrances, and guarding those entrances is a large, black cloud of a creature. It looks like its insides are constantly moving and changing, as though it were made up of dozens of smaller clouds that were involuntarily gathered up into this one giant cloud, all trying to escape. It doesn't seem to notice any of you and just continues to float along.

- BOSS MECHANICS: This boss is a mob that has collective 100 HP. Every time you attack it (following the general battle rules), you TAKE 8 damage. Make sure to tally the boss's total HP (the damage you did to it) at the bottom of your post as well as your total HP and the damage you did that round. If the boss's HP hits 0, you have defeated it, and your team can now take the portal back.

** Note: This is a mission I wrote up so it isn't on the official list of EMs.

Rhys was rolling around in bed, just about half way awake after a really, really good nap when he got the text. He picked up the phone and only saw the location bit of the information before he buried his head back into his pillow for a good five more minutes. Going back for a second time for the same reason felt obnoxious to him, but the more he thought about it the more it at least made a little bit of sense.

Eventually he did get out of bed and got himself cleaned up before heading out to the Lighthouse, where he waited for the rest of the team to show up. He didn't bother to look at the rest of the file since he already had a pretty good guess what it was about, which meant he also didn't know who was going with him this time.

Seren had been reading when the text came in. Pulling it open, she read the file over, fully. When she saw who she was going with, she gave a nervous smile. On the hand, there was still awkward heaviness over them from the night he brought her the gift. On the other hand, library day had been a success. She pondered, then shrugged and got up to get dressed.

She didn't put on anything she usually wore. Instead, she had simple light jeans on, a black shirt, and she had pinned her hair into a tightly braided bun. She left all of her usual jewelry at home, too, not willing to risk loosing anything. As such, the only decorative item she had on was Diwata's totem form.

She walked to the Lighthouse, and saw Rhys waiting. "Hey. Still waiting on Joy, I take it?"

When Joy's phone rang out with the generic music, she knew it meant there was another mission. To be honest, she was expecting something related to the Sahara or Atlantis, so to learn it was in Mexico surprised her. This also meant she wasn't sure how to get ready and what to wear for it, which would explain why she was the last person there.

She did make sure to bring something to eat, light snacks and bottled water, enough for a team of three. And while she would have preferred more time to prepare something better, she had no choice but to make do with what she had. Of course, the excitement she was trying to contain was less for the mission and more for the people she was going with.

"Yooooo~" she greeted.

"Evenin'," he greeted Seren with a nod first, then was about to answer when Joy came up just before he could say anything. He smirked at her timing as well the make-up of the team as a whole, which he wasn't complaining at all about at this point. She did say something about finding better teammates, and lo and behold there these two were.

He squinted at Joy though, who came equipped with snacks the like they were about to go on a camping trip. But then he glanced at his phone and looked at the time, did a quick calculation for time difference, and then groaned.

"Good call on the snacks. The time difference is s**t so we'll be waiting for a while; usually only do these kinds of missions at night over there," he said with a little glance toward Seren. "This your first mission?" His voice was tinged with mild concern, though he had a feeling with all the training she'd done so far she would probably be alright.

"Joy! Sweet, we're all here." Seren grinned at her two friends, and looked ready to go. She glanced at Joy's preparations, and made a surprised face, then a chagrined one, in turn. "Should have thought of water, ugh I feel dumb. We're goin' into Heat." She did a face palm at that, and shook her head, sighing at herself for what seemed to her an overly obvious mistake. "Right. Need to think about these things in the future. Good Job Me."

When Rhys started speaking again, though, she turned her head to face him, listening to what he was saying. Well at least they'd have a little relaxation time in advance, was her main thought.

Then he asked about it being her first mission, and she studied him, wondering if he was going to try to send her back and ask for another team mate. That would... upset her a great deal. However, she nodded, slowly. "Yeah, first mission. Glad I'm doing it with friends."

"Didn't sound like a major mission so I thought to bring food and water. Those usually have a team dedicated to supplies and logistics at the beginning, and depending on how long the mission takes, the rest of the members assist in maintaining the rations." Joy's explanation was cheerful, making it sound like one fun adventure instead of the often times hellish experience missions could be.

She gave both Rhys and Seren understanding smiles, "Chill, it's your first mission. Preparations always vary depending on the target objective. Speaking of, who is taking point as Team Lead?" She asked, less mom-mode and more mission-mode.

Rhys gave her a clap on the shoulder. "Yeah, what Joy said. Like everything else you gotta give it time, you'll find your pace with missions, too." Though to be honest it wasn't something he would suggest she volunteer for every single time. He turned to Joy, then, and raised a hand.

"I'll take point since I've been there before. The last mission report has a lot of my input 'cause I was the only one that actually ran into the ********' thing. Anyway, let's get going. Since we gotta wait for dark there we can talk a little more at the base." With that he turned and lead them towards the portal that, upon request, would take them to exactly the right place.

The other end of the portal led to a very small clearing surrounded by a thicket. It was all too familiar for him and he scowled at the humidity level while shrugging off his jacket. And his scarf. And his flannel.

Seren laughed, and lifted her brows, trying to figure out where the other two thought she wasn't chill. She was chill. She was calm. She was here to do what she was getting paid, housed, and fed to do. If she got hurt, well, there was little new about that, and she really didn't understand their reactions. But she shrugged and nodded. "All right, I'll be as chill as I can be." There, that should cover it.

Honestly, the only thing that she might NOT be chill about was she was kind of concerned about Rhys. Was he healed enough? And this was the same goddamn mission that put a hole in his arm the first time. But she kept her worry and concern behind her long practiced mask of calm emotionless. She wasn't going to give anything away.

She followed him through the portal and onto the other side. She swore softly at the sudden heat and humidity, and followed his lead in taking her coat and scarf off.

Unfortunately, anything more would be inappropriate, and also show things only he knew about. So that wasn't happening.

Instead she just moved out of the way.

"Okidoks, I'll bring up the rear," Joy said, letting Rhys and Seren go on ahead of her, preferring the view of the two "together" so to speak. Sure the younger woman had insisted there was nothing there, but Joy remembered her saying differently during their prior drinking session.

Although to be fair, Joy might have remembered wrong, she had drunk enough at the time that coordination was not in her vocabulary. Too bad she hadn't drunk enough to not remember what happened afterwards.

The humidity was nostalgic, and Joy said as much, "I'm reminded of home!" She didn't need to take off much, she could handle the humidity well enough even if it wasn't the most pleasant of environments.

Seren's reaction was more what he expected; Joy sort of just got an amused huff out of him before he gestured toward the left. "C'mon."

He led them just a few feet into the thicket, then knelt down. "Cover me, this place is a ********' tourist trap and some of those bastards are curious as hell. Get lost and s**t, the idiot." He pulled what looked like a patch of grass glued to a metal cover of some kind, and underneath it was a keypad. He entered the code and held his breath until there was beep, followed by an audible click and hiss, and the latch opened just enough that he could get his hand inside and lift it completely open to reveal the entrance to the outpost.

"File in, quick. We got a two-hour wait ahead of us." Then he paused before adding, "I'll tell you the code once we're inside."

Aria Starstone
I...figured you guys could fast-forward through the two-hour wait in your posts so we can just get to the mission already.
Huni Pi
Hope ya don't mind. :P I listed the outpost details here if you need any for your post.

Seren stood in a position to block the view at Rhys's request for cover, then went inside once it was open. After they'd gotten inside, she found a place to settle in and wait. She even managed to get comfortable enough to nap for the better part of the next two hours, not wanting to just sit here feeling like eternity would be faster.

When she woke, she stood back up and walked over to Rhys. "So... we about ready, then?"

More than anything it was the waiting that proved to be the one thing Joy found maddening of the situation. That and not having the opportunity to catch Rhys and Seren being comfortable around each other.

"Please, please tell me it's time to move out." Somehow she managed to keep herself from sounding like she was whining despite pretty much wanting to.

Waiting had been the suckiest part on the last mission, at least until he got to the end of it and passed out, so when the two eventually approached him he huffed in mild amusement. It was time though, so he eventually led them back out and, under cover of night, they approached the ruins.

The entrance was as creepy as he remembered, and he grimaced. "Just a note, something about this place had Zeph really freaked out. She was screaming at me all night, distracting as all hell but nothing major. Lemme know if something happens with any of yours weapons. It might be somethin' to look into." The request was made in passing as he guided them to the entrance before stepping aside to let them through first.

"I'd say 'welcome' but I don't really ********' wanna be here again, so."

Seren sighed softly, grateful that it was time to head out. She stuck close to her partners, eyes sweeping the shadows suspiciously, wondering where the s**t show would begin.

She remembered all too well the state Rhys had been in when he came back last time, and that was AFTER he'd been in the infirmary for a few days.

His words caught her attention. "Good to know. I'll keep an 'ear' out to see what, if anything, happens with Di." She slipped into the entrance, and very carefully summoned her weapon... just in case. She wanted to be ready if something happened while the others were entering.

His last statement left her with tight lips. She'd rather he not be here either. It couldn't be any fun memories for him.
