Follows this.

The first thing Yuuri realized as he slowly came back into consciousness was that he was in a lot of pain. He felt weak, his throat sore and raw, his lungs burning and stomach feeling empty but still churning. He felt like he’d been hit by a bus, and as he shifted to try and move, pain shot through his side and back, drawing out a pathetic whimper.

The second thing Yuuri realized, was that he was surrounded by an eerie purple light. He hissed as he shifted again, this time opening his eyes to a half blurry surrounding. One of his contacts must have fallen out in his struggle to get out of the water -

He’d almost drowned. That was right. The memories were coming back to him slowly, as though everything had been put on pause. Yuuri shifted again, lifting his hand so he could cover his left eye and hope that it would be enough to prevent the headache that would certainly come with seeing only half clearly, and noticed that his hand had been bandaged.

He only vaguely remembered the extent of his injuries past having the ethereal wolf bite into his leg and dragged across the pavement to the knight, and when the knight had broken his large vial of liquid across his back and side, having intended it for his General instead. Everything else was a haze of desperation and panic as he dug his fingers into whatever he could hold onto, his arms and hands getting cut up from the rocks and other debris in the river.

Past the bandages around his fingers and hand, Yuuri’s eyes traveled to his wrist and arm, which was now covered in the sleeve of a shirt that was too big for him -

He’d powered down at some point. Was that what happened after a senshi lost consciousness? He didn’t know, but he could see, as he pushed himself up a little more, onto his forearm, that he’d been covered with a blanket as well.

Had the wolf done this? Yuuri knew he didn’t care about him as a person, but as a tool, was it possible that he was maybe of some worth to his General?

A growl from close by had him nearly jumping out of his skin, the bright eyes of a youma staring at him through the darkness. He felt dizzy and unprepared for this, and he didn’t know where his General even was. He couldn’t feel his aura like this, or if he was even close enough to stop him from being killed.

No. He was close.

Yuuri didn’t need to feel the wolf’s aura to know he was nearby, that he wouldn’t allow something to happen to Yuuri while he was in the Rift with him. The flare of fear that had welled up in him at the sound of the growling youma seemed to simmer into resignation and acceptance.

If he were to die in this place, it would be because that was what his General wanted. He didn’t want to die, but if that was what his General deemed as a worthy punishment…

The darkness of the Rift itself was permeated by a hazy, purpleish light that seemed to emanate from both nowhere and everywhere simultaneously. It gave everything an extremely muted glow, almost claustrophobic; there was no actual light, no bright skies or blinding sun. Everything was lost to the long shadows that stretched out over the ruins of various buildings, the broken skeletons of various creatures.

And then there were the youma.

A large, black shape was unfurling close to Yuuri now, something that looked like a mix between a porcupine and a scorpion, all sharp angles and pointed needles. Its jaw opened wide, teeth glinting bright and hungry in the depths of the Rift, and as it lumbered towards its prey, a slithering tail came up, stinger aimed directly at the human.

"No."

It was said calmly, without heat, just before a booted foot came crunching violently down onto the youma. It gave a squealing shriek of pain and twisted, but Wolfeite had already ground down, and a second later, it exploded in a haze of glittering dust that swept over the ground.

He pulled his foot back and straightened. Black and gold eyes moved over the little encampment to where Yuuri sat, looking - not afraid, exactly, but uncertain. Wolfeite's ears were upright and alert; not pressed back in fury, but wary, listening carefully, tail switching back and forth in slow, rhythmic movements.

"Eat," he said roughly, and pointed. There was a small bag sitting beside Yuuri, oddly enough a plastic grocery bag. Inside were an assortment of various snacks and fruits, nothing really substantial, but enough to be at least some sort of sustenance.

The youma was drawing nearer, ready to lunge. Even if Yuuri wanted to stop it or defend himself, there really wasn’t much he could do. He could power up, but that might draw even more attention to his status as a corrupt senshi.

But the wolf was there, just as Yuuri had expected, and he watched somewhat warily as he crushed the youma into dust beneath his foot and then gestured to the bag beside where Yuuri was now sitting. He would be lying if he said he wasn’t frightened about the situation he was in, surrounded by youma, and surely he would be told his performance was unsatisfactory against the knight. Almost drowning wasn’t exactly the highlight of his day, either.

"Thank you," he said politely, wincing as he slowly turned to reach for the bag, not feeling very hungry at the moment but he wasn’t stupid enough to refuse the wolf’s order. He peeked inside and pulled out an apple, turning it a few times in his hand as he glanced around the strange landscape, and then up at the wolf for just a moment before dropping his head back down again.

"I’m so sorry," he mumbled, feeling his face heat with embarrassment and shame, his throat still sore and voice weak. "You shouldn’t have had to save me." He didn’t want to seem ungrateful, because he definitely was! But he should also be able to stay on his own two feet. What use was he if he couldn’t keep himself from getting hurt?

Stupidly he could feel his eyes stinging, but he kept his head down, staring stubbornly with only his good eye at the apple in his hands, holding tight enough to keep his hands from shaking. He wanted to see Adrien.

"Are you okay?" he asked, trying to calm himself and not being very successful. He cautioned a glance up, hoping the knight hadn’t hurt him, too.

His golden eyed gaze did not leave Yuuri's face. Wolfeite was watching him, not exactly angrily, not exactly irritably, but something else, his gaze unyielding and impenetrable. There was nothing in it, really, that could be read straight off the bat.

The apologies were expected, but for once not immediately discarded. Wolfeite's mask was low around his neck instead of pulled up around the lower half of his face, revealing every inch of his black painted expression, his flashing white teeth, razor sharp in his mouth. Yuuri had not acted the way Wolfeite would have preferred, but he had not been, at least, stupid enough to run away like a coward.

Like other people he knew.

The question about his own well being made his eyes darken a little. Wolfeite's fingers twitched slightly, his teeth clenching with the effort of holding back whatever it was that he was about to say. He had to be careful with this senshi; he couldn't push things the way he could with Aue.

"Fine," he said, after a long moment, though this wasn't entirely true. Wolfeite let out a low growl.

"I said, eat."

It wasn’t often that Yuuri saw the wolf with his mask down, and whenever he did he couldn’t help the fear rush through him. The wolf, as Yuuri had known from the moment he first laid eyes on him, was something else entirely. Not human, not monster. He happened to think he was very justified thinking the wolf to be a spirit or god of some kind.

In many ways, Yuuri still thought him to be either of those options.

His presence was enough to make anyone cringe away in terror, and yet… even though Yuuri was still fearful, he felt… not exactly comfortable, but there was a certain calm that fell over him when he was around the wolf. Just as he’d felt when he was approached by the now dusted youma.

Yuuri had opened his mouth to maybe try to push the subject, not exactly believing the wolf after such a long pause, but there wasn’t any evidence that he had been seriously injured. At least not where Yuuri could see.

Silently, he lifted the apple to his mouth to take a bite, his left hand reaching up to cover his eye because trying to keep it shut was a pain. He didn’t say anything for a few long moments, instead just focusing on making himself eat even though he didn’t really feel like it. He was curious about things, especially when the wolf was involved, but he didn’t want to bother him too much.

He was curious… and exhausted. He was trying to ignore the burning in his lungs, but coughed quietly to himself as he slowly chewed on the bites of apple, wondering how Adrien was at that very moment. Was he worried? Maybe he just went to bed and wouldn’t be too concerned until the morning when Yuuri wasn’t there with him. Or had he already panicked and called the police?

"Have you eaten?" he finally worked up the courage to ask, figuring that focusing on Adrien and the wolf kept him distracted well enough to ignore his own aches and pains.

He made an annoyed sound in the back of his throat the question, but at the very least, Yuuri had eaten. It wouldn’t do to have his recruit pass out because he was too stubborn to actually get something into his system; that kindness would be the death of him one day, but that was not Wolfeite’s concern, and it would not be his concern when it did. All that mattered was the here and now, the fact that he needed Yuuri alive more than he wanted to get rid of him.

Humans in the rift was a dangerous, reckless thing, but the caring for other people’s opinions on that subject had long since dissipated. Wolfeite watched Yuuri with a long, cold stare, though the ears atop his head were upright and alert; a sure sign that he wasn’t going to pounce anytime soon.

Maybe.

“No,” he said flatly. “I don’t need to eat right now.”

He took a pace back towards an outcropping of purpleish rock, not really seeing it, but instead turning to sit on it, looking somehow still tense, still strung like a too tight wire, likely in the case of anything jumping out at them. But he was watching Yuuri, eyes narrowed, glowing gold that was bright in the purple gloom.

“We need to fix this. I can’t have you almost dying.”

Yuuri visibly flinched at the wolf’s sound of annoyance, averting his gaze so as not to cause more offense. He’d forgotten that the wolf was still exactly that; a wolf. Yuuri knew that he didn’t care about Yuuri specifically, only what he’d invested in him.

The reminder that he’d almost died had Yuuri flinching again, his heart beating heavily as he remembered all the things he’d thought as he sunk to the bottom of the river. But what the wolf meant by ‘fixing this’ Yuuri had no idea. He didn’t sound like he wanted Yuuri to die, but if he was fed up with him enough, then what would stop him?

Quietly, Yuuri continued to chew small bites of the apple, keeping his head down and other hand over his eye, trying not to focus on the purplish haze of everything, or the sound of youma both close and far away. It was dangerous here, but this was what the wolf deemed best, and Yuuri was in no place to argue.

After a few moments, Yuuri lowered what was left of the apple down, his breathing a little more shallow as all the things that the wolf could possibly do to ‘fix this’ swirled through his head. Was he going to have him turn into a youma, too? That was possible with senshi like himself, wasn’t it? Or maybe he was going to finish the job himself and kill him before something else could. Maybe ‘almost dying’ was just what the wolf meant as ‘I don’t want your starseed to go to waste’.

“Whatever you believe is best, -” he started and then stopped as his voice stupidly cracked. He swallowed, his mouth much too dry suddenly.

“My life is yours.”

Yuuri was a strange creature, all nerves and instinct, jumpy and uncertain. The anxiety wasn’t exactly a promising start, but he’d already proven himself loyal. Loyal, not desperate, which was the key. Wolfeite did not care for the desperate ones who flung themselves at him, begging and pleading. Even when he’d first stood over Yuuri in the dark, Yuuri had not begged for his life, but instead had given it freely, handed it over to him, and it was excellent, excellent knowledge to have.

The apple was mostly gone. He’d fed himself, which was important, since the last thing that Wolfeite wanted was for his damned recruit to pass out again. He was still watching, eyes unrelenting, glowing brightly gold in the hazy, purple black of the Rift.
It was familiar here. Needed.

His.

Just like Yuuri.

My life is yours.

Wolfeite felt a surge of adrenaline, of power that broke over his chest and spread outwards. Silently he stood, pushing himself up off of the rocks and came towards Yuuri, looming over him, a hand reaching out to fist in the front of his shirt and tug him forward. For a moment he just looked, and then he let go, taking a pace around Yuuri, voice low and rasping, a growl of a sound.

“Is it?”

He pressed his face into Yuuri’s hair from behind, inhaling sharply; not out of desire, but greed. Possession. His hands came to rest on Yuuri’s shoulders.

“Is it really?”

Yuuri watched as the wolf stood and moved towards him, a startled squeak escaping as he grabbed hold of his shirt, fear washing over him as he looked back into his General’s glowing golden eyes, so unlike his black. Even still, Yuuri couldn’t help the idea of being the sun to his general’s moon. He was the senshi of Solar Flares, and his General was a wolf. It was a stupidly poetic way of thinking about his situation, but it was better than completely crumpling to the fear.

He was afraid of the wolf. There was no denying that. He knew if his general so wanted, he could end his life, and there was part of Yuuri that was convinced this might be that time.

“Yes,” he confirmed, his voice shaking just as his hands were. He’d lowered the hand from his eye so he could clutch at his shirt with both of them, eyes squeezed shut because he wasn’t quite brave enough to watch himself be killed, even if he accepted it. His heart was pounding heavy against his chest, the fear now not quite the same as when he thought he was going to drown.

“My life is yours.”

He wouldn’t beg. There was no point. If the wolf wasn’t there to keep him alive, then the other creatures of the Rift would finish him off. Even still, he wished he could see Adrien again.

With just the smallest movement, he could change things. His clawed hands moved up Yuuri’s shoulders, curling possessively around his neck, though without touching it, claws hovering just above the tender, fragile skin.

Humans really were so very, very fragile.

He was shaking, whether from fear or something else, Wolfeite didn’t know nor care. The trembling was something he’d gotten used to by now, something he already associated with his senshi, and he discarded it as easily as he discarded everything else, feelings and emotions splintered and shattered on the Rift floor. They were meaningless here, after all; all that mattered was this.

All that mattered was that quiet, shaking yes and the reminder that Wolfeite had chosen Yuuri and therefore Kamacite for a reason, and it was this reason.

His claws came closer, curling, brushing against the fair skin, then moved downward to settle on Yuuri’s shoulders again. Wolfeite felt his mouth curve in a savage grin that had nothing to do with pleasure and had everything to do with the satisfaction and vicious desire to take the life that he had been given so freely.

His head slanted, breath skimming over Yuuri’s neck.

”Good,” Wolfeite hissed, and then sank his teeth brutally hard down, snapping against skin.

He couldn’t breathe. He could feel fingers and claws ghosting over his throat, brushing against his skin. This was it. The moment he died.

A shiver ran down his spine at the feel of breath against his neck. And then --

Yuuri couldn’t even scream out as his whole body seized up. Vicious, agonizing pain tore through him, skin breaking as the wolf’s teeth clamped down over his neck. A strangled cry eventually broke through, hissing out from Yuuri’s throat, tears pooling in his eyes and falling down his face as hot blood covered his neck and shoulder and through his clothes and down his chest and back.

Just as when he’d first met the wolf, there was no point in trying to run or escape. This was his fate and he accepted it. He was surprised he’d even lasted as long as he had.
