Chapter 9: Grave Expectations

|| IC ||

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. The notices came in waves. At first, it was a posting in the markets, a letter that declared a gathering. Most ignored it, assuming it had something to do with the upcoming festivals or the tournament. That was until the next notice came; the tournament was postponed for the year. Suddenly, everyone began to notice the flyers and documents that appeared on the boards around the cities. There would be a gathering to discuss the safety concerns, and it was required for leaders and heads of family to attend, at least. For the safety of the land, they were expected to show up.

Naturally, those who remembered began to wonder if there was talk of war.

The last time the two great nations of Oba and Matori came together, all those years ago, it was to discuss marching against the Alkidikes. Fighting broke out and quite a few never returned. Anxiety plagued those who were done with war, while others began to train harder. No one knew the reason why they were summoned, but many had their theories and all were ready to stand for their nation.

The day of the gathering came, and everyone traveled to Sulburi. It was overcrowded, but well prepared for such masses, and as the leaders of the two species gathered atop a stage, they evaluated those who had made the journey.

"It seems both nations took heed to the posted warnings," Bestian spoke to his peers, thoughtful as he looked out at the mass of dark reds and brilliant blues, "We've got quite the crowd from both sides of the border..."

"Yes..." Matori leader murmured in response, her golden eyes narrowed as she too evaluated the crowd, "It is quite striking to see so many come together once more."

While the Obans made strict requirements to summon everyone, she attempted to reassure on her travel to the settlement. It was difficult to reassure everyone, but she attempted to stem the rumors of marching to another war. At least the Matori were more interested in maintaining the peace. They were not quite ready to lose more mothers, fathers, sisters, or brothers to the uncontrollable bloodshed that still stained their past.

"I hope we can keep them calm..." She whispered after a long moment, as the crowd continued to grow with those gathering for the announcement.

Ai was not sure how all of the chaos would pan out but he was here in Belrea with Myrida for the gathering of their state and Obas. They were here because of strange and disturbing happenings and he wanted to know more so that he could prepare for it properly.

He hated unknown things like this. It wasnt fair to be left in the dark when you wanted to start raising your family.

Location: In the crowd
--------------------

The young Alkidike still refused to come home, even though it was the festival, even though sister after sister had decided to go out of their way to tell her that she had to. To the roots with them! She was not going home, not until she was ready. She wasn't sure she would ever be ready, but she didn't care. Point was, those snooty sisters could buzz off.

Rebelliousness faded to melancholy. She still had no idea where to start searching for her friend. What if he was one of the vanished? What of others like him - a startling and disturbing thought that set her insides churning uncomfortably? She had to help find them.

And so here she was. Waiting. Uneasy.

Bristling. Were those antennae in the crowd? She did not want to talk to any Sister of hers, no thanks. She had problems enough.

Saraf - Post 1

On behalf of the Outcast Unit Saraf was on his way to join the gathering of both side of the border. It was quite the gathering too, wasn't it? Both Obans and Matori, a few scatterings of others that were likely visiting, and some mixed bloods as well. It was a mix that kind of made him think about the unit that he served in since it was such a mix of people. He shook his head before he looked around, wondering who was in charge of all of this and with a bit of scanning he was able to spot Besian.

Now there was a man that Saraf had looked down upon in the past. That was back when he was still far too aggressive for his own good. He'd grown up since those days though, broadened his horizons, which allowed him to open not only his mind but his heart to those who weren't just Oban... those like Arima.

It was because of her, as well as those that he served with, and their safety that he'd come. He wanted to see what was going on, see what he could do to help, and see if his unit... as strange as they were, were needed for the task at hand. Here was to hoping it wasn't something serious since he didn't really want to go diving into another war given everything that was going on around him at the moment.

Shesha - 1

Shesha lifted a hand, running his fingers through his hair to neaten his wavy red locks before he looked over at the one what was walking along with him, "I feel as though something interesting is going to happen. You can tell by all of those that have gathered around us." He said to Aqio, scanning the crowd closely, trying to pick out faces that he knew.

"Were you ever able to get your brother to leave town? It seems there is more danger out there then just the danger that we are stirring up." He had to admit he was curious if Aqio was able to chase him off. If so that meant that he wouldn't be around for whatever had the leaders of Oba and Matori in a tizzy, not to mention he wouldn't be around for what Aqio and Shesha meant to stir up either. Aqio did seem the sort to want to keep Abie away from danger after all... something that Shesha didn't quite understand himself.

After a thoughtful moment Shesha asked, "Are they in the crowd today? Those parents of yours?" He couldn't see a gathering like this happening with out them so surely Lord Laofay and his... what, consort? They must be about too. That meant they had best be on their best behavior.

Naevius
Post 1

Of course Naevius had arrived in Sulburi for the announcement, partially out of duty and partially because she was curious as to what would warrant canceling the tournament. She was the princess but that didn't mean she knew everything. The last few times she had been in the capital her father had been too busy to see her, she assumed now that whatever announcement they were going to make would be what had been keeping her father. Her eyes watched Besian as he spoke with the matori leader suddenly wishing she could read lips. On one hand, Naevius understood not being told anything, she only spent maybe half her time in the capital anyway. At the same time, though, it bothered her to no rn end. What she would even do with the information was another thing. Perhaps when she was older she'd be entrusted with information, Nae tried to assure herself.

In any case, the Oban Princess stood near the front of the crowd close to the raised podium that Besian and the others stood on and greeted anyone kindly that happened to approach. She kept catching herself, however, almost talking over a shoulder to the two that were normally there, Varinia and Sebastien, but both were busy and weren't able to accompany her this time. Instead, she had two others assigned which made Naevius sigh just thinking about it. She turned her attention to what was at hand. She heard rumors of all kinds of things, one of the most troubling being war. If they were going to go to war with anyone, surely she would have seen some signs. There was no telling at this point, Naevius reminded herself.

[[Anyone is welcome to approach Naevius and talk!!!]]

Mash'al had fallen out of certain social circles in the past years of transforming a hermit, so focused on the business he had inherited that he neglected the relationships that kept it going... A good way to repair that was to attend the Tournament. Obans from near and far, all stages of wealth, gathered at the capital to watch such exquisite entertainment.

Arriving a few days ahead of schedule, Mash'al found a nice room to rent for his time in Sulburi, a place to return to after all the chaos. Unfortunately, upon his arrival, he was notified of the cancellation of the event. Turns out they the Obans were hosting the Matoran Nation for a friendly gathering about one thing or another, the details didn't much matter to him... Observing from the balcony in his room he looked over the mass of people, "Look at them all..." he muttered to himself with a glass of wine in his hand.

It had been ages since he seen so many Water Earthlings at the capital. Draining his glass he prepared himself to venture out; being sure to remain armed. It was interesting that so many had decided to return for some silly talks... Perhaps this meeting was more important than he had realized.

Knowing nothing was going to be accomplished from his room, so he stepped out onto the streets and made his way to the front where he saw the most peculiar sight, "Well, well, well... If it isn't our lovely Princess." he purred while dipping into a bow, "All this commotion and you're down in the streets with the rest of us, hmm?" He found it curious she hadn't been included in these talks, but then again... he hadn't seen the king among them either.

Aaricia- Post 1

Covered by cloak and hood, Aari stood near the back of the crowd. She could hide in the mass while still having a reasonable way to escape if the need came. After all, her father was still trying to get her... but the summons had sounded too important to avoid. She had chosen the path of helping those in need, and if she could be of any sort of assistance in whatever this was.. to her, it was worth the risk to her own self if it meant others could be saved.

Naevius had been watching Besian and the others up on the podium when she heard a familiar voice. “Oh, Mash'al Tahan!” She said only somewhat surprised as she dipped her head in respect. “Well being a Princess has some perks but there is still protocol. Besides, I've never minded wandering the crowds. Doing so allows me to speak to people and get an unaltered account. It's the best way to get to know the people I feel. I'd much rather be down here ‘with the rest of you.’” Nae said, changing his words just a tad. She liked getting first hand accounts of the actual goings on of Oba and now Tendaji as a whole. What she learned while walking the crowds was invaluable information to her and depending on the information, she would pass it on to other people. Sometimes, advisors would sugar coat their reports, this at least Naevius knew. So if she was able to collect unbiased and raw information, why shouldn't she?

As her mind came back from its own little tangent, she looked the other tamer over. “What about you? You travel do you not? Did you just happen to be in the capital?” He appeared to be doing well for which Nae was glad. It had been quite some time since their last meeting, which maybe hadn't ended so well but he found it in himself to approach her. She was secretly happy that he had so she had a familiar face to talk with. It was strange being without Vari and Seb so even just having someone she'd met with once was somewhat comforting.

Aqio- Post 1

The matorian had linked his arm with the mage's glancing to the other male. "I did...Abie is settling a matter then he and Incanthis are off to find a place for them. Far from the nightmares." he had a warning tone. Always a bit more snippy due to his protective instinct over his sibling. He glanced around. "Interesting indeed..."

The expecting mother reached up to pat her mate's cheek. "Relax love." she smiled up to him. "We're okay..." more meaning there than she meant.

Shesha - Post 2

Shesha's painted lips, currently done in a deep red, twisted into a grin at the tone that Aqio was using. It seemed as though the little fish wasn't so pleased when Shesha mentioned his brother, hm? Nudging his hip against that of Aqio he said, "Relax, little fish. You're the only fish that I am looking to catch in my nets at the moment. I have zero interest in your brother or his timid little healer."

Now he couldn't say the same about other people in Oba though. There was likely plenty of interest to go around where the both of them were concerned though Oba was far too mild these days to to too much about it. Well, possibly. Hard to say what might be going on behind the scenes given the gathering that they were joining. There was no saying what it was that they might be getting into at the moment. To be honest it was something that was actually... exciting in his mind. He was eager to see what was going on and what Oba and Matori planned to do about whatever situation they were in.

Here was hoping there was profit to be had in prestige and reputation. Giving Aqio a glance he said, "So, don't want to tell me if your parents are about?"

He gave a laugh, "My dear, I never 'just happen' to do anything without reason." His time was far too precious for merely fooling around. "I had intended to reconnect with some acquaintances..." Forcing a polite smile, he continued, "I was reminded by a "business associate"-" he gritted his teeth as the words of his brother echoed in his mind, "that it was imperative to keep up appearances... Apparently, I had fallen out of the loop." Brushing his hair from his face Mash'al crossed his arms and leaned against the stage, "I had calculated that the tournament would be a perfect opportunity to 'get back in the game' so to say."

He scanned the crowd with suspicion. Again the princess insisted on being on the ground, in a crowd, without protection. It made his skin crawl as he ran through all the possible scenarios of how this could all go horribly wrong. Realizing he was midway through a story, he continued. "Unfortunately, Upon my arrival, I was informed the tournament had been canceled for one reason or another..."

Reluctant to return home just yet, he decided to try his hand at mingling, and to his luck he found Naevius. "So Princess, Have you learned anything about this gathering in your wanderings with the common folk?" He asked, somewhat amused with her thought process. It was so innocent... so naive, but then, that was part of her charm.

Aylin felt like a fish out of water. [Was that expression tasteful with so many Matori around?] It felt as though she had barely just arrived in this region before talks of another war were being whispered in hushed voices from town to town, marketplace to marketplace, the words carried on the wind by travelers and merchants alike. She had only just seen the coastline for the first time, there wasn’t much time for such frivolities at the last tournament and it seemed ages ago that she had competed as an apprentice. The whole point of her journey to Oba and Matori was to overcome her fears of the unknown territories after their war had wiped out her village and taken her parents from her- and yet these talks were being called and prefaced with a paltry “no need to worry” demeanor.

She thought she caught sight of an Alkidike towering above the locals- that at least was a familiar sight for sore eyes among all these gold crystals and blue skin. Aylin took to wringing her hands along her staff while she waited anxiously for the announcements to be made.

Alassiel 1

Z’ran and Alassiel had been in Oba for some business. While Z’ran had ignored the posters, Alassiel had worried and wondered where Ziel might be. If there was going to be talk of war again, since they had mentioned safety concerns, then she’d rather have her daughter in her sight. So when it was time for the meeting, Alassiel dragged Z’ran to the meeting. Once at the gathering though, Alassiel did not eel fully safe and Z’ran understood that this was serious and his concern turned towards his daughter. This was a huge mass of people, if a fight broke out it would be complete chaos.
