To analyze what lurks under the ground of a Dugtrio, we must first look at a Diglett. There have been many theories about this species, but during a recent scientific experiment (in which no harm came to any Diglett nor Dugtrio involved) scientists have finally concluded what lies beneath the surface of the mysterious ground Pokemon.

Unlike popular belief in media, it was not a muscular body, but rather an extension of the Diglett we can see protruding from the surface. Shaped and colored much like a hot dog, the lower body of the Diglett just goes down and down and down... further and further into the earth, seemingly endlessly. Scientists have yet to come to the conclusion of whether it IS endless or not, but that is for another experiment. Finding what lay under a Diglett, and, later, a Dugtrio, was ground-breaking enough.

Now, we've established what lies beneath a Diglett, but that's not what you're here for. You're hear to about Dugtrio and we're prepared to tell you. After some interesting experimental research (that largely involved chasing around three Digletts and trying to corral them into a group, producing both exhausted scientists and concerned Digletts until success was finally achieved) we found out that the evolution of Diglett into Dugtrio was based purely on unfortunate coincidence!

When three Digletts collide with one another, their under-bits get tangled up so completely that they form an impossible balled-up knot. With no option of becoming untangled, even with attempted scientific assistance, the Digletts together seemed to form an agreement between one another and then evolved. The evolved form seemed to merge closer together and when its underneath bits were observed, the Dugtrio's limbs had formed into a tight braid, which was much like its single form, but now larger and more elegant than a single hot dog.

So there you have it folks. Stay tuned for our upcoming program: Professors - What the Frond is with the Tree Names?

"Dugtrio is a mystery for the ages. Here, kid, have a drink-- No, wait, you're underage. Have some milk, and I'll have a drink." So it is, the man shoots back a shot before shaking his head. "Look, I went down there. I went down there to solve the mystery of what was beneath those bulbous brown heads -- and let me tell you, son, it's not worth it. The pain, the heartache, the loss... You've got too much to lose to follow my folly! Don't do it, son. Trust me. There are hurts that never heal... Things you see that will never be unseen." The old man seems to give a visible shudder, pushing out his shot glass just to have it refilled.

The young boy -- a young and curious trainer -- looks on surprised. "It's just a pokemon--"

"DON'T YOU EVER SAY THAT!" The old man snarls, turning on his seat so fast the young man his to hold tight to the bar so he doesn't fall off of his. "Don't you underestimate that pokemon. There is nothing "just" about it!" The old man is half-panting in emotion, glaring at the young whippersnapper, before he seems to get control.

"I see you're as pig headed as that kid Ash I met years ago. And that little snot Gary." The old man grumbles, turning back to look down in his drink. The young trainer doesn't know who Ash or Gary happens to be, but he does delicately sip his milk.

"Well, kid," the old man starts suddenly, "I can tell you drive a hard bargain. If I tell you what I found, you have to promise to never try to dig up that beast."

The young kid starts to say something, but the old man cuts it him off. "To start, you have to go find those little monsters. They're in the deepest, darkest caves, and let me tell you -- greater men than I have succumbed to those little sons of bitches. I mean. Er. Language. Yeah, I'll try to watch that." He clears his throat, before going back into his story. "I was young once. I had dreams once. And I once thought I was going to dig up that dug trio just to see what I would find. I brought pokeballs, nets, traps, honey -- you name it, I had it. And oh, did I have an ego. Such pride. I thought I was immortal; I thought I could stand upon the shoulders of giants like Professor Oak and Giovanni." The old man's eyes stared off into the bar, as if he was seeing something else.

"But oh, I was wrong. So wrong. So I went a diggin' for that dugtrio. The first few nights were easy enough. There were a few zubats, and a rhynhorn came sniffin' round. I found a few digletts, but that's not what I wanted. They harassed me a bit, but my pokemon held them at bay. Day by day, I went deeper, and deeper in to that cave. How many days I stayed under ground, I don't know; I trusted my pokemon, and they trusted me. This was all done in the name of science-- and greatness!" He gave a bitter laugh.

"But my potions started running low, and I didn't care. I knew we were close. A nasty and surprise onix attack left my poor Bidouf all but crushed; but that was fine. The thing was too stupid to know that it was wonded. I had other pokemon, of course, and an escape rope. But I was so close to dugtrio I could smell it. What I didn't know, though, was the thing could smell fear! Let me tell you boy, that three headed beast is more clever than you'd ever imagine! It trapped me, son. It trapped me, along with its army of fuzzy headed pokemon. Ah, but I had a secret weapon, see.

"I had a jigglypuff, and I made sure that sweet pink ball of cotton candy sang its little heart out. It worked, and the Dugtrio fell into a deep sleep. Deep enough so I could get to work!" The man paused, an almost crazed smile on his lips. The young trainer says nothing but waits.

"Ah. So I dug. I dug, and I dug, and I dug. Anytime that Dugtrio looked like it wanted to wake, I'd make jigglypuff sing again. But oh. Oh what I didn't know. Beneath the surface of those three heads was just a series of other heads and some wormy tentacle like things! Tentacles that wold make a grown man blush! Worse, those heads weren't asleep! Oh, I lost my foot to one of those monsters; it was all hissing and snarling! It's nose was red, and its eyes black -- BLACK I TELL YA! And it was a mean ol' bugger! Those other heads were out for blood and they got it! My foot's now just a peg foot, and ol' Jigglypuff was so traumatized it never sang again. Those dugtrios are nothing but spaghetti monsters of the deep! It's no wonder only its head pops up! Every time I close my eyes, all I can imagine are those wispy tentacles, thrashing about, and those eyes. THOSE EYES. You could get lost in the coldness, the bitterness, of those beady black eyes. Jigglypuff and I had to drag our way back to the surface; Bidouf was never the same again, and I've been in this bar warnin' folks about Diglett's Cave ever since. Trust me, kid, it's aint worth it. You see a diglett or dugtrio, you turn around and go the heck back home!"

The man was actually shaking, a little froth and spittle on the corner of his lips. "I don't care what they say. You leave that little furry head thing alone, and you don't go botherin' it now, ya hear? It'll suck you down into the ground, and all that'll be left are your bones. I lost my foot, a small whippersnaper like you would lose your life. Leave Dugtrio alone. Don't go botherin' those pokemon, ya hear?"

The young trainer's eyes were wide, but he would nod. He wouldn't tell the other man that he only fought exclusively with Diglett's, and was hoping to find Diglett's Cave. If Dugtrio really was some underground fiend, that sounded pretty perfect to him.

You know how your rival appears in the most random of places? Well, there's a reason for that.

They know how to get into a secret network of underground tunnels. Unless captured, Dugtrio can only be used by rivals. Rivals can use dugtrios to trip up other trainers (most preferably, you). Unlike common belief of only three heads, there are actually six. Yet, it has been shown that each body is an own entity. So, they are a trio. Their ends are just a carbon copy of what's above.

Rivals are able to communicate with the dugtrios to know your position and which way you're headed so that they can follow you.

Further research needs to be done on how they communicate and why there's a strong connection between rivals and dugtrios.

Hi boys and girls, this is Professor Juno from Science weekly. Today we will be discussing the mystery of Pokemon Dugtrio. It has been long suspected that Dugtrio has a set of sharp digging feet and a short stubby tail. However recently scientist have discovered what truly lies beneath the body of Dugtrio. Now I can't explain how excited I was when I heard the news and I'm sure your socks will be blown off like mine were. What lies under Dugtrio is in fact a mini black hole. The concept that mini black wholes existed was originally brought up in1971 by Theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking.
However if mini black whole exist why have these micro black holes not destroyed their surrounding?
Scientist were shocked to discover the answer to that questing exists under the marvelous Dugtrio. It seems Dugtrio has the special ability to gather these mini black wholes and store them under ground. The magnetic charge given by a Dugtrio body holds the black whole confined stopping the mini black whole from it's path of destruction. With such a legendary power should Dugtrio be considered the next legendary pokemon? Science are still debating if Dugtrio should be classified as a legendary pokemon.

-That's all for now folks-
This is Professor Juno and I'll see you next week for another episode of Science weekly.

Dear Pokemon Weekly,

What lies underneath a Dugtrio? A Diglet? Well as a researcher of these peculiar Pokermon I have studied them in the hopes of discovering the answer to those questions. Years of living in the wilderness, watching carefully. Watching them didn't lead me to an answer. No, it wasn't until I decided to dig into the earth nearby a colony of Dugtrio that I determined what truly lies underneath them. What I discovered was this: roots. Amazingly there were extensive networks of roots coming from these Dugtrio in which I assumed was how they nourished themselves on a daily basis. I never did see them eat, after all. Diglet, the pre-evolutionary form of Dugtrio had smaller root networks. I propose that when Diglet is ready to evolve, it makes connections with two other Diglet's roots in order to form a Dugtrio. I am still unsure how this process works but, I am confident with the evidence I have gathered thus far will assist in further research. Other research questions that have come up during my time with the Dugtrio and later the Diglet include whether or not these Pokemon can be considered plants in some way due to these roots or if these Pokemon are a unique anomaly. Lastly, a friend of mine who visited an island in the Alola region a week ago told me that the Diglet and Dugtrio found there looked like they had sprouted hair! Hearing that made me so excited of the possibility that what lied underneath the Alolan Diglet and Dugtrio may be different from the ones founf here in the Kanto region. Only way to find out though is to study them. As a result, I have made plans to visit the Alolan region to find this out. Wish me luck! Your truly, Rita Zyon.

Let me know if the coding is messed up, I ended up writing this on my phone. Thanks for the opportunity!

Your Submission: The mystery behind whats under a Dugtrio, you say? Why the answer is very simple!....The answer is...Nothing! Oh, don't look so surprised.
Dugtrio is actually much more like...hm...a land-based Octopus. It has 10 or more tiny, thin tendrils that it keeps coiled closely to its body. Similar to an octopus, it can camouflage these tendrils to match its enviroment. This allows it to appear like its under ground but in reality - its not! It can also can control the texture of these tendrils to help blend in even further, to look like various types of rock, short grass, or bark on a tree. It could even look like a pile of blankets!
Dugtrio is not a very good swimmer though, unlike the octopus and will stick more to rocky terrian.
