Sagi was really struggling with seeing his homework. The always patient hybrid was beginning to get frustrated. His enchantments to fix his vision had worn off. Raa’s medication had been costing the family a lot of money without insurance, and so the family had to make a few cut backs on their spending. Sagi had back-up glasses but had misplaced them. Luckily the doctor was coming to the house tomorrow to reinfuse their pendants with sight charms. But until then, doing something as simple as homework was proving to be a bit of a challenge. Sagi sighed gently, tapping his pencil lightly against his page.

Thema stumbled in to the kitchen, stomach grumbling for a snack. She hadn’t expected to see her sibling sitting at the kitchen counter so late at night, tapping his pencil away. Thema tilted her head at the sight of him. Her eyes weren’t doing so well, her enchantments wearing off. Her upper two eyes could see fine, but her lower two had poor depth. It was making it difficult to navigate around the house, but she knew it so well now that it wasn’t as bad as it could have been.
“Sagi?” She piped up as she walked past him to get to the fridge. “Having troubles?”

Sagi lifted his head, ears flicking at the sound of his sister entering the room. At first, she didn’t say anything. But shortly after she made her way to the fridge and picked out some sammich supplies, she spoke. It was a flash back to a couple weeks ago when Sagi was helping Thema.
Sagi couldn’t keep himself from smirking to himself, his shortened tail flipping subtly against his chair. “Yah, just struggling to see my homework … my enchantment wore off a few hours ago … I was hoping to get it done before then. It didn’t work out like that, though … “

Thema set her bread down on the counter and rummaged through the package, grabbing for the two end pieces. She slid them out of the package and set them down on the cutting board before slathering a big dollop of mayo on to each side. “Mine hasn’t fully warn off yet … “ Thema commented quietly, layering slices of meet on to one half of her sammich, followed by a slice of cheese. “Did you need help writing, or reading? What kinda project is it?” Thema asked, twisting the bag of bread closed before tying it shut with an elastic.

“It’s math … “ Sagi said with a small pout. He hated math. So, so much. There was nothing enjoyable or useful about math, but Sagi still had to do it every day. It was tiresome, and the one thing that wore down on Sagi’s nerves. Even being in math class with extra help made Sagi’s head spin. Without being able to see, it made Sagi’s head spin all the more.
“I don’t know what to do … it’s due tomorrow morning during first period.” Sagi sounded almost like he was going to cry, fingers creeping up in to his hair to scratch at his scalp nervously.

Thema slapped the two halves of her sammich together, nodding once more. Thema was quite gifted with math, and if anyone was going to be able to help Sagi through his frustrations, it was Thema.
“What do you need?” She asked, munching down on her sammich with a lettucey crunch. “Maybe you can dictate and I can write down your responses? I’m sure mom and dad can write you a note to take to school tomorrow incase the teacher gets suspicious of the writing change!” Thema snorted a little at that. Teachers were so observant, even the assistants had a knack for spotting cheaters.

Sagi peered down at his page and calculator, picking up his pencil again. The boy pursed his lips in thought as he run his fingers over the calculator. It was such a nice offer. And if they explained the situation to their parents he was sure they’d be more than willing to write that note out. After all, they knew that their enchantments were due to wear off today.
“Yah … could you? I think that would help a lot … and I wouldn’t be so frustrated … “ Sagi slipped out of his seat and grabbed the other stool, dragging it closer so that him and his sister could sit closer together.

Thema made her way across the rest of the kitchen, still munching away at her delicious sammich before hoisting herself in to the chair. “Alright, what do we have here … “ her four eyes scanned over the page, her lower set making the numbers and symbols look almost 3D. Neat. “Ah, easy peasy! I can def help you with this. It’s mostly multiplication and simple division. I’ve got this – OH! Right, sorry … you’ve got this! Just tell me how you want it answered, and if you need help with them I can help you break it down, ok?”

Sagi was delighted that Thema seemed to know what she was doing. He leaned over her shoulder as she peered over the page, looking it over. When she said it would be easy, Sagi felt immense relief. “Ah … yah … thank you, Thema! I really appreciate this!” Sagi was practically beaming with joy and gratitude.
“I managed to get the first couple of questions myself, but now they’re getting harder and longer. I could focus on a few of the numbers, but I can’t do it as easily with the longer questions. Can you read them out to me?”

It felt good to feel useful. Thema was practically aglow as she scooped up the pencil from Sagi’s hands. She spent as much time as was necessary assisting Sagi with how to multiply and divide, breaking things down in to even groups. Things seemed to be going smoothly, and with Thema’s teachings, Sagi seemed to slowly begin to understand the basics of mathematics. It felt good to be able to teach someone a new skill. It gave Thema hope that perhaps Sagi would be better equipped to handle math moving forward. It was an exciting and fulfilling feeling. Thema was … proud.
