Things had been slowly spiralling out of control for the past ten minutes, and in the past five had evolved into all out war. The culprits were a group of twelve or so hooligans, pushing, shouting, and hurling food at each other from across tables. They had spread so far out that other students were forced to duck underneath chairs and tables to avoid getting struck by stray missiles.
Sandals skidding over the linoleum floor, Ruttaga just barely dodged a fruit projectile, hooting with laughter. “Missed me!” he jeered. Grabbing a hamburger patty off a nearby nightmare's plate, he hurled it back at his opponent. A second later, he was rewarded with the sight of katsup and mayonnaise splattered across their face. The insult earned several a slice of cake and a pair of oranges hurtling his direction.
“Uh-oh.” Ruttaga veered wildly from side to side to avoid the missiles. As he reeled back to avoid the second orange his feet slipped out from under him. Before he could stop himself, he tumbled backwards and crashed into a nightmare sitting behind him. There was a splat as they went down face first into a plate of mashed potatoes.
There was a moment of silence and then a chorus went up around the cafeteria. “Oooooo!”
Frit held an empty tray up over her head, ducking to avoid the projectiles that were going every which way. She saw one kid stand up, laughing. They were obviously the perpetrator of this awful thing, and Frit was not having any of it. She could be studying! But instead was stuck here, doing whatever this was. Frit grinned as she sent out a burst of light. It was dazzling, beautiful! At least from what she could see of it, which was not much. The imp had turned away from the spell, not wanting to take any damage herself.

Ruttaga clamped his mouth shut, trying to stifle his laughter. With as serious a face he could muster, he turned to apologise to the imp. No sooner had he turned though, than the hybrid let out a blinding flash of light. Ruttaga staggered back, clutching at his eyes. Stars swam in his vision. “Hey, whoa! What the hell?” he demanded. The sound of snickers behind him reached his ears.
After a few seconds, Ruttaga's sight returned, albeit still fuzzy. He could make out the dark outline of the hybrid, standing in front of him. She was not dark for long though. A dim light began to burn between her hands. “Oh, no you don't,” Ruttaga growled. He made a jagged zigzag in the air with his index finger and grinned. “You wanna go? Let's dance!” He brought his arm down in a swift motion. There was the sharp crack of thunder and a bolt of lightning struck the hybrid.
Frit sent out another beam of light. Sadly it went straight out the window. This was the problem with having to look away from the spell, she could not aim ir worth a dam.

The electric blast must have fried her motor functions, since her next beam of light only grazed him. It still burned where it scored his wing, but Ruttaga could handle a little pain. “That all you got, fluffy?” he asked, mocking her frustration. His grin never faltered. “Okay, well... I'm not gonna hold back.”
With a flap of his wings, Ruttaga hopped into the air. “Here goes!” he announced. He made a simple gesture and gave a powerful flap. There was a sudden boom as a gust of wind tore across the cafeteria lying everything, including his opponent flat.
