➳ How do they act?
- Janey is selfless, perseverant, witty, and eager to live up to the concept of heroism. She generally carries herself in a nonchalant way, only being serious when she feels it’s necessary. Doing the right thing is very important to her, and she tends to chastise herself the hardest, because decisions won’t always turn out the way she intends. Nonetheless, she idolizes heroes of the Glory Days and hopes to honor them all with her work. She even follows Mr. Invincible’s code of no killing, managing to successfully put criminals in cells instead of body bags.
➳ What's their backstory?
- A young Janey hadn’t really pictured herself ever becoming a detective. She had always idolized superheroes, and sought to become one herself, though she was discouraged by her apparent lack of powers. A defining part of her life came when a battle between Blue Devil and Olympia occurred on February 3, 1989. At the time, she—only twelve then—had just stepped out of a museum, she and her fellow students present for a field trip. A crumbling building would have been the grave for a handicapped man also attempting to flee, because he’d lost his balance with his crutches during the tremors. She ran in to save him, but was seemingly too late to stop a large fragment of debris to descend on them. That’s when she came, Olympia having come down and caught the fragment, effectively saving her and the man alike.
After Blue Devil was defeated and taken away, she called out to her savior. They had a brief conversation, the superheroine commending her on her heroism, though Janey responded by saying she had no superpowers and was no good. Olympia’s answer would change her life: “You don’t need powers to be a hero. You just have to be wiling to do the right thing, time and time again.” With those words in mind, she knew she would never get powers, but she could do the right thing. It led her to joining the SIA, becoming an agent during the early days of its founding. She’s been in the SIA ever since and likes to think she’s good at her job.
