Quote:
Years had passed since Avior had found himself actually out on patrol in the city. After the whole madness Ordeal, where he found the very fabric of his mind torn and twisted by the very chaos he had once trusted in so deeply, he felt incredibly lost. For more than four years he had been a Senshi, once on the side of Order, now on the side of Chaos, but it was hardly a time spent well used.

No, in fact, after the first two years , when he had earned his wings, he had barely made it out of the city alive. Not because of how dangerous it was, but because of just how badly his own mind decided to beat and berate him. He was just a kid back then, too stupid to realize that there was far more to life than just a few petty words and a single moment of weakness, yet he couldn’t go back to that time. And for a while it plagued him, driving him deeper and deeper into a hole he just couldn’t climb out of, or find the light at it’s end. So back then, he had tried to end it. When that, too, had failed Nischal had chosen to flee the city, to find his own sense of purpose and and to try his hand at being alone by choice.

For a long time, it worked, and two years later, he returned to DC, ready to make amends with his shortcomings and to help protect those of his small and fragmented faction. Yet it seemed as if just that small, tiny, insignificant event while fighting Pandora was enough to shake his reserve to the point where Avior found himself troubled and aimless, fighting back the tormented chorus for voices in the back of his mind who chanted verse after verse of his own uselessness.

To combat them, he went out on patrol, looking for something he couldn’t quite name. Fear of the unknown or being attacked left him years ago, for what could be scarier to him right now than his own mind attacking itself? And with that lack of fear came a recklessness that he should have known better than to do, coming far too close to normal civilians when powered up during the still young night. It was always such a strange feeling, being so close to those who lived normally, yet being forced to ignore them until danger was present, almost as if he had disassociated himself from normal humans all together.

And it frightened him.

For all his fears and worries, he still found himself drawn to those like him, so when he did finally feel the Aura of another Dark Mirror Senshi, he headed towards it, ready to help if need be. Then again, how much help could he even be when he was incredibly lacking in helping himself?
Quote:
“Whoa. It’s an eternal,” Sinope commented as the high-powered stranger came into view. He sat on the edge of a school building, kicking his feet over empty air. “And an Eternal Dark Mirror Senshi at that. To what do I owe the honor, Your Eternalness?” the teen asked, smirking as he appraised the newcomer and not even bothering to get up.

“Don’t run into a lot of other Dark Mirror Senshi often, so I don’t know many, especially because I’m pretty new. But I don’t think I’ve met any Eternal Dark Mirrors before and I’m pretty sure I’ve never seen you before. What’s your name?”

The redhead didn’t bother introducing himself. He wasn’t sure the other senshi would know or care, lowly as Sinope was, so he didn’t waste his breath. Instead, he focused on the little mirror wraith below, watching it as it crept toward the group of boys hanging around just outside the guys’ locker rooms.
Quote:
Avior had no thoughts at all on the matter of formalities, and just smiled at the younger senshi sitting up high.

“It’s Avior. Avior, Senshi of Walls. Just Avior is fine, since I’m your ally, not a person to be listened to or anything. It’s a pleasure to meet you. What’s your name and Sphere?” Calmly, he greeted him, taking just a moment to give a short nod before he easily scaled the wall to join him up on the roof. Just how old was this kid? Probably hardly any older than he had been when he first powered. Once beside him, his gaze followed the boy’s and made a slight raised eyebrow at the wraith wiggling along towards some boys.

“Your classmates I take it?” He asked, not accusing, just curious. Suddenly he felt incredibly old standing next to this young teen, even if he was still just a teen himself. He guessed that’s just what was bound to happen if you quit school at sixteen. “And you said you’re new? May I ask, was it Remarque who awakened you, or perhaps Leto?”
Quote:
”Senshi of…Walls?” the younger senshi repeated, twisting around to check Avior’s face for signs of jesting. “How does that even work? What’s your magic like? Do you build things? Make mazes? Block people off?” Sneering at the concept, he answered, “Sailor Sinope, Senshi of Slyness.” When Avior came up to meet his altitude, he got to his feet, brushed himself off, and extended a hand to shake.

At the eternal’s inquiry, he gave a casual nod while he followed the progression of his wraith. “I figure the less energy they have, the less inclined they’ll be to use me as a punching bag.” The latter question regarding who awoke him required more thought. “‘Awoke me’? You mean like as a Dark Mirror Senshi, right? I think it was Remarque. Long-haired blonde guy. Why?”
Quote:
“It’s more like summoning walls. Barriers of sorts to keep people safe, though I’ve used them before to launch myself in the air, or crushing youma. I’ve even used them to pin people in place so they couldn’t escape.” Avior wasn’t quite sure what to make of Sinope’s sneer, given the fact that his magic was one of the useful spheres he had seen in his lifetime. Especially when compared to slyness. Still, the handshake was warm and reciprocated before he turned his gaze back to the boys below.

“Ah… Well, I suppose they are perfect candidates for draining then. Maybe I should send my own wraith down there to wear them out even more. Can’t have them beating up on one of my brothers in arms.” In saying that, he pulled out one of the shards he had hidden in his fuku, but didn’t quite use it yet. After all, he didn’t want to intrude on the other’s ‘hunting grounds’ if he wasn’t welcomed.

“I only ask because from what I remember from years ago, Leto was much more of a violent teacher than Remarque was. And Remarque is an old friend, I hope he’s helping you out when it comes to learning the ropes. How long have you been a senshi for?”
Quote:
“Keep them safe, keep them in, keep them out, make a labyrinth to watch them scurry around like lab rats...okay, I guess I can see how that might come in handy. Maybe even be fun,” Sinope commented, smirking at the last idea. “Crushing youma and launching yourself into the air sound like pretty creative ways to use your magic, too, even if it’s not the most conventional use that comes to mind when you think ‘walls’. I guess that relies on how the walls manifest, though, since if they just materialized out of thin air, those might not have been possible.”

His smirk broadened into a full grin at Avior’s comment about possibly sending his own wraith out and Sinope bowed at his waist with an elaborate gesture of his arm. “Please, be my guest! I’d appreciate the help.” The additional words about being one of Avior’s ‘brothers in arms’ caused him to flinch, but he had recomposed himself by the time he had straightened from his bow. Whether or not the older senshi considered himself his ‘brother’ in any way, shape, or form was not his problem. Even if he collected energy from those boys, it wasn’t as if Avior didn’t get anything out of it. He benefitted from the energy collected from the mirror wraiths as well, same as the rest of the Dark Mirror Senshi.

“Yeah? I take it you know both of them, then?” Sinope asked, curious about this Leto person and both their and Remarque’s relations to Avior. “Nah, not really. I mean he answered a few of my questions, but I’m a quick learner and I figured I could work things out on my own. Don’t like to rely on others when I can help it,” he explained. “Let’s see...I’ve been a senshi for abooout...six months now? How about you?”
Quote:
Nodding in agreement, and pleased that he had been granted permission, Avior used his shard to set his little beastie of a wraith on the boys below. He had enough trust in the weird little thing that he otherwise paid it no mind as it charged in.

“I know of both, yes, but I’ve only worked with Remarque pretty extensively. He’s the one who brought me into the Dark Mirror Court and helped me reach Eternal level.” Six months, huh…. He wasn’t quite sure if that qualified as being a quick learner… After all, it only took Avior two or three months to reach Super level… But maybe that was a White Moon thing, rushing towards power. Life was alot different since he had given all that up.

“Since I was sixteen so… Four years now? But I was only really active for two of them… Something came up and I left the city on my own for a while and only got back about a year ago.” Sinope didn’t need to know about his depression or how he went and drove all around the country in a busted up winnebago, so why mention it?

“Don’t like to rely on others? The Dark Mirror Court is Often described as being a ‘family’ since it’s so small, but lots of us seem to have that same ideology, not wanting the help of others. It makes us disjointed and unorganized I think. Perhaps if you wanted to be all by yourself, how come you didn’t awaken as a white moon senshi? Before I corrupted It certainly felt like a dog eat dog world and I had no one to depend on. I joined here BECAUSE there were people to work with.”

At the mention of how the older sailor scout had achieved the rank of Eternal, Sinope shrugged. Though the redhead considered himself a quick learner, he wasn't all that ambitious. Thus, despite being able to catch on to what he could do as a Dark Mirror Senshi pretty early on, hadn't bothered utilizing it toward any particular end. He wasn't in any hurry to gain power and become a Super or Eternal senshi himself since, in his experience, more power meant more responsibility, and responsibility wasn't something he was all that keen on shouldering more of at the moment. He was happy right where he was and didn't envy Avior's position in the least. No one seemed to expect too much from a senshi of his level which meant he was mostly left alone by enemies as well as those of his own court who might have otherwise scolded him for not doing more to aid their cause.

"Wait - 'brought you in'?" Sinope paraphrased, tilting his head as he regarded Avior with intrigue. "You mean 'awoke' right? Or did you actually change sides?" He crossed his arms over his chest and raised a brow. "Huh. Didn't know people took breaks for years on end like that. Guess it makes sense some people might get tired of the fighting and stuff. But that's why I just take things easy and mostly sit on the sidelines. It's easier to survive that way and I don't burn myself out from stress." The young man scratched his head. "When'd you become an Eternal, then? Before you came back, or after?"

The talk of the Dark Mirror Court first caused Sinope to stare at the Eternal for a few moments before laughing aloud. "What? A family?" he guffawed. "Avior, dude, I think the Dark Mirror Court you know and the one I know are completely different. I know I'm new, but I can count the others I've met since I was awoken six months ago on one hand. You can't be a family if you hardly ever see each other, let alone interact with one another." He began to pace, gesticulating as he spoke. "I mean you just said you were gone for a while. For someone who considered the court your family, why would you have just abandoned them like that? It'd be kind of hard to believe in that ideology then, so can you blame them? I've never heard anyone even mention you."

He waved a dismissive hand. "This is what I know of the current court. We're such a small faction, we're easy to scatter. No one bothers trying to know each other or get together to team up or anything. There's little communication, so there's little cooperation that can be coordinated between us. And really, what conviction is there in being a Dark Mirror Senshi? The Negaverse is fighting to control the Earth, the White Moon Court is fighting to stop them, but what are we doing? According to Remarque, sounded like we were just sitting around twiddling our thumbs waiting for one of them to win. Maybe searching Mirrorspace for some slim chance that we might find a new planet to inhabit once the Earth is completely destroyed by humanity, but what are the odds of that?"

Sinope chuckled weakly and shook his head. "If anyone would have wanted to form more of a family, I'd have thought they'd join the White Moon Court, not leave it. They're the ones with the teams that band together in the name of love and justice and whatever else. If you joined this court to depend on people, man...I feel sorry for you, because I've yet to see anything like that among our group." With a pitying grin, he looked back at Avior. "Where did you ever get the idea that our court acted like a family? What made you think a group of chaos would have any more order to it than those of order?"

Avior remained quiet as the younger senshi seemed to go on and on about what he had said. He did not bother to interrupt his ranting, nor did he bother to try to correct anything he said, only watching those down below grow quieter and quieter as their energy was slowly but surely drained away. Once Sinope seemed to get all of his words out, and brief moment of quiet fell between them, Avior finally manged to shake his head slowly.

"I changed sides when I was 16, and when I changed, I grew to eternal at that time... That was three years ago, mind you, and back then, it truly did feel like a family. I've only returned here in the past two or three months myself so... Forgive me if I dwell on what I remember of the past. Not that it matters, as It was something I ran away from in the first place. No one knew Avior because he didn't allow himself to be known, and locked himself away. He was no one of importance, meant nothing to anyone, and that feeling never went away." He paused again, hands coming to fold in front of him in a mock professional position. As the young seemed to be one who would make up his mind and ramble off words of judgement, he felt uncompelled to say much else, not wanting to deal with being judged even more than he judged himself.

"Long story short, depression happened, born from the sudden loss of everything my life was before and coming back into the world as nothing, and I couldn't handle it, so I left Destiny City on my own before my life was given to a blade that was my own rather than that of the Negaverse. It wasn't the war, it wasn't regret for corrupting, it was an imbalance inside of me that nothing could fix at the time, and I didn't know how, I was so young and stupid. So please, before you start another rant about how you see this as us doing nothing, and perhaps before you start judging me for fleeing as I did, keep your words a little more cautious. Not everyone is a fresh young face who has not seen just how horrifying things can get. And not everyone can bare being alone. It's that same sort of loneliness that ends up with people finding comfort with strangers or in a bottle, or even in death." His once kind smile was gone, replaced by a look that was blank, the kind when one begins to withdraw, not that he meant to.

The boy before him was just that. A boy. Sinope probably hadn't even seen the bodies that dangled from rooftops years ago, or seen his friends fall one by one in battle, blood dripping onto the ground from teens, kids, who had not even seen the summer of their 18th birthdays. He had been lucky, he got out for a time, but abandoned that in order to return to something he just couldn't understand yet. Ah, but who was he to complain? Rather than remain, he pushed away from the wall they had been leaning against, and turned to walk away. Avior, though he tried, truly couldn't shake the doubt from his mind that returning was the best idea. His heart was still fragile. as was his mind, and the loud, screaming voices in his head of self loathing and remorse grew in volume the more he listened to Sinope speak of things he didn't know.

Again, though, what did it matter?

"I will not bother you with what I've seen or done, and I do not need your pity, so I'll take my leave." This boy would be fine on his own, Avior was sure. After all, civilians were nothing against senshi, even at their most basic of levels.

He had become an eternal at 16? Ugh! That was Sinope's age right now! What 16-year-old would have wanted that kind of burden on their shoulders? Unless, of course, Avior hadn't realized what he had been getting into at the time. "Man, getting all melodramatic on me, referring to yourself in third person," Sinope teased. Then, more seriously, "Sounds to me like that's the best way to keep things; meaning nothing to anyone. That's why I like being no one of importance. I'm not targeted and I don't have attachments and I don't have to look out for anyone but number one. I don't know why anyone with any brains or logic would have it any other way."

The younger sensei didn't know what Avior meant by 'the sudden loss of everything his life was before', but it just sounded like a lot of drama to him and he assumed that the eternal was exaggerating his story a bit. Still, he wasn't about to think less of the brunet for it. "Why would I judge you for fleeing? Heck, I would have too. Sometimes it's the only sensible thing to do." He snickered softly. "Dude, Avior, I don't need to see horrifying things to know how bad they can get. My imagination's more than enough for that. That's why I keep out of harm's way whenever I can." Shrugging his shoulders, he said, "I guess some people are more desperate or pathetic than others, too, if they're so afraid of being alone that they have to depend on others to feel good about themselves."

He sighed when he saw the other young man close himself off. "Look. Think of it this way. If you don't have any attachments to anyone, you don't have to worry when they do stupid things like throw themselves into battle. You never have to worry about anyone trying to sacrifice themselves for you or doing anything detrimental to themselves on your behalf because you mean nothing to anyone. And if they mean nothing to you, they can't hurt you. People we care about are the ones who are most harmful to us, whether they know it or not. That's why it's best not to care about anyone but yourself." He looked down at the bullies from his school. "If you don't have friends, you don't have to worry about them hurting you - intentionally or unintentionally."

When Avior announced that he planned to leave, Sinope looked up briefly, but then averted his gaze again, smiling bitterly at himself. That was the problem with purposely isolating oneself. You started to long for company no matter who it was. Well, he couldn't have himself getting too close to anyone, so it was probably for the best that the eternal was leaving. It was probably best, too, that the other Dark Mirror already seemed to dislike him. "Suit yourself," he said, going back to the edge of the roof to sit, dangling his legs once more and swinging them idly. "Hope you find what you're looking for. And that you don't regret it."

Though Avior fully intended to leave, he hesitated, those words of self doubt quieting for just a moment. He was beginning to feel awful for just allowing his dark feelings to cloud his interactions. There was no way he'd be able to connect to anyone acting like this, running away at the first sign of being hurt. And what sort of adult was he to let the words of a naive kid sway his convictions.

It just wouldn't be right.

"I don't want to stop caring." He finally responded after another long silence, having watched the boy speak again then almost look bitter for some reason. Perhaps such a harsh response to his own thoughts and feelings was just an act. Did anyone truly wish to be alone? "For as much as you can get hurt, I think it's worth having people hat you trust and care for. You can only do so much alone. I guess that's why I don't want to be left alone. I want to care and I want to help and I want to be there when I'm needed. Maybe I am a bit pathetic for wanting to be praised and needing someone to tell me that this time I'm making the right choice... That's not so bad... Right?"

The question wasn't meant to be answered; it trailed off his tongue near a whisper towards the end as if he was asking himself rather than the kid before him. In a moment he might regret later, Avior decided to stay, taking a seat about an arms width away from the other, his own feet dangling off the side and crossing at the ankle neatly as he watched his wraith scurry about below.

"What are you looking for? Why'd you join this war if you don't want to be anyone important or be part of anything larger than yourself? How did they convince you to join their side?"

When Avior delayed his departure to counter Sinope's question and ask one of his own, the younger senshi shrugged, still staring down at his bullies. They had been playing basketball under the lamplight, but after being drained by both his and the eternal's mirror wraiths, they were almost too tired to hold the ball. The boys agreed to call it an evening and were heading home for the night.

"You said you can only do so much alone, but what more would you want to accomplish?" he asked at last, not bothering to raise his head this time. "There's nothing I can think of that I'd wanna do that I couldn't do on my own. Why would you want to risk relying on anyone else?" Perhaps he couldn't think of anything because he'd trained himself from an early age to live a lifestyle that required as little assistance from others as possible. As a result, he'd avoided even considering endeavors that required him to depend on others. "I'm not saying it's bad," the redhead answered Avior, heedless of whether or not he had wanted to be answered. "That way of living's just not for me."

And then a blur of motion beside him really did cause him to look up. Glancing over, he realized the eternal appeared to have changed his mind about leaving. When Avior asked him more questions, this time perhaps with the genuine intention of listening to the answer, Sinope took a moment to analyze why. Why had he suddenly decided to stay? Why did he want to know about Sinope? Had something changed his mind? Was he asking out of personal interest and curiosity or just a second attempt at being polite and friendly?

After a minute or two of silence, the redhead glanced back down at his slowly-swaying feet. "I dunno. Thought it would be cool to have powers. The person who introduced me to the whole thing said I didn't have to dedicate myself to anything or anyone if I joined the Dark Mirror Court." Sinope didn't believe it was possible to lie by omission because omission wasn't a lie. What he'd said was the truth, even if not all of it. There were also some reasons he suspected he joined that he wasn't quite ready to acknowledge to himself just yet, let alone someone he'd only just met. "I also like watching people and seeing what happens."

After a moment's more hesitation, he decided to confess something else. "As a civilian, one of my favorite hobbies is comparing history books. Since history is written by the victors, there's bound to be inconsistencies and biases that you can only notice if you compare different versions of the records of what happened. This war seems to be like history in the making." He scratched his head. "I'm not all that eager to be a part of it, but it's interesting to watch because it's a first-hand source of information. If I watch from the sidelines instead of partaking in the actual war, I'm less biased and it's easier to get a good look at the whole picture instead of just one side of the story."

To Avior, it seemed like he gained some sort of quiet acceptance from Sinope as the other decided that there wasn't anything wrong with the way he lived, and to that he smiled. Far too often he remembered being judged as weak, frail, even pathetic at times for how his heart drove his actions, so it certainly was a comfort to hear something like that. Even if it was just an offhanded comment about it.

As they sat in silence after he asked his next question, Avior only curiously glanced at the younger senshi now and then before he turned his gaze back down to the boys stumbling around below. If they were leaving, he supposed Sinope didn't have much of a reason to stay, and in turn, neither would he. After nearly deciding there wasn't going to be any further conversation between them, Sinope spoke up again and he listened intently, nodding every so often to himself.

"There's nothing wrong at all if you don't want to fight. It makes no sense for every single person on our faction to be warriors, especially given how small we are. Were all of us to be wiped out, all of us who decide to go out and risk their lives, then what would be left of us? Only bits and pieces that are left behind in the memories of the others we left an impression on... But if we have someone who stays back and observer what happens, maybe then we won't be forgotten..." It was more than a little sad to think about, but it was true. There would always be White Mooners awakening, but if Rem or Leto were to vanish, there would be no more of them. Atleast that's how he thought it still worked.

"I'd say... Keep it up, what you're doing, keeping track of what's going on and looking at things with an unbiased light. Who knows, maybe you'll be the last one left then. That being said, if things go wrong, would you still ask for help? I hope so... And if you'd like, I could be one of the ones you can call for help, no strings attached. Can't have the historian among us get hurt."

"Mmm...I guess if the goal is not to be forgotten, then yeah, it's good to have someone to stay safe on the sidelines and just watch," he agreed. "But...I don't want to be the last one left standing, either. Even people like me can get guilty consciences if everyone else dies fighting and we're only alive because we didn't help." He leaned back, placing his hands on the ground behind him to support his weight on his arms.

"But that's why I like this faction - because we don't have to fight. None of us have to be warriors, so none of us have to die. I mean, who would we fight if we even did fight? It's impractical and pointless to make enemies of either the White Moon or the Negaverse. So why not just concentrate on sitting tight and surviving? And don't say because that's too easy; it's harder than it sounds. Especially for self-righteous numbskulls who get it in their head that they can make a difference at the cost of their lives." Sinope made a slight shrug, his voice growing softer. He really didn't like the idea of being the last Dark Mirror Senshi left. "We should all just stay alive."

Eventually Sinope got up once more and, after dusting himself off a second time, told Avior, "I try not to get into situations where I would need to rely on or bother others. Usually I like to trust that if I keep myself out of harm's way and other people do the same with themselves, no one has to worry about anyone else getting hurt. And therefore, no one has to worry about hurting or even just inconveniencing themselves for the sake of someone else."

"Whatever you decide to do, it's never set in stone. If you wish to change your mind or do what you want to do, that's your choice now, isn't it?" Though he knew he could never do what Sinope said, just stand back and survive, he could understand why that was appealing to some. He had decided some time ago that his life wasn't something so precious that he couldn't risk it to save someone else.

When Sinope stood, he did as well, stretching slightly before pulling out his shard to withdraw the wraith he sent out. It was time to go, he could tell, and he was just fine with that.

"Some situations we can't avoid, so if you happen to get sucked into one and the rest of your team is there, feel free to look for me. I'll help as much as I can."

"Yeah...I guess you're right," the younger teen agreed. "All things are changeable." A mischievous smile lit his face.

"And one never knows what the future holds. I said I try not to get into those situations, but in our line of work, there may be a time it's unavoidable. I may be looking to you for help sooner than I'd like."

He turned away, preparing to head off into the night. "So...thanks."
