It was a beautiful night for a hunt. Not a cloud could be seen in the darkened sky. The moon had reached its zenith, shining its silver beams upon the land and providing excellent light. A soft wind stirred the smells in the air to give the hunters a better sense of the animals in the area. Yes, tonight would be a good one for hunting. “We should make quite a haul tonight.” Hollow Tzalmon muttered to his wolf companion strolling beside him. The charmed Purewalker cast his yellow eyes about as they walked, ears perked forward in alert. He had transformed into his feral form so that his senses would be even more enhanced. “From the smell of it, there’s plenty of game to provide us an excellent meal.” Shinzui agreed with a nod of his head. He had sensed the same things that Hollow did. His usually bright lantern hung loose and blackened across his back while he walked. It felt odd to him for it not to be lit. But it was necessary when on the hunt as they were now. While true the light could attract the curious, it would also reveal them too soon to their prey. So they had opted to extinguish its light in favor of the natural light provided by the moon. The wolf’s blue eyes flicked over to the Purewalker. “What shall we hunt tonight?”Hollow’s tail twitched back and forth in thought. “Hmmm, I don’t care what it is really. So long as it isn’t fish.” He had enough fish to last himself a lifetime. Besides, the last time he had been near water it hadn’t been his most heroic or delightful moment. The Seathi that were in trouble were ultimately saved, but his lack of participation in the endeavor had slowly been eating away at Hollow. He hid it well, or so he hoped, but he knew he could have done more than he did. If his adoptive father had seen his actions that day, well, he was certain that pride would not be something seen upon the elder stallion’s face. The charmed Purewalker tried to avoid the ocean or larger bodies of water ever since that day. The reminder of the shame was simply too great. Sometimes Hollow even wondered why his companion wolf, Shinzui, chose to bond with him. But that would be a discussion likely to never happen. Hollow wasn’t one to break down his walls and get all meditative about such things. Shinzui nodded his head, turning his gaze forward again. “I wouldn’t worry about fish. From what I can smell, we’re as far away from the ocean as possible. Though I do believe there is a small lake nearby…” The scent of water did permeate the air but it wasn’t as extensive as that of the ocean. It smelled more of freshness than salt as well. “Hmph.” Hollow snorted in acknowledgement of the wolf’s assessment. He honestly didn’t care about whether there was a body of water near them. Just so long as they didn’t have to resort to eating fish. “I think we should try for a nice rabbit or boar.” Hollow tilted his head back slightly and sniffed the air. “Yeah, I think a boar would be good. There are quite a few near us. We could get one a piece. Maybe grab another for later too.” The more he pondered it, the more he liked the idea. Boars could be tough meat if they were older, but the young ones had nice fatty pockets and the meat was tender. If they could catch two or three, then they wouldn’t have to hunt again until the next night or, possibly, the following morning. The black and tan feral cat pointed with his paw towards where he sensed the animals. “I don’t know about you, but I’m going after those boars.” Shinzui blinked as he stared back at the other. “Boar it is then.” He inclined his head, though he inwardly rolled his eyes. Truthfully, boars were not his favorite meat to eat. However, when Hollow got something in his mind, there was nothing anyone could say to alter it. Well, almost nothing. He just didn’t feel like arguing the point tonight. And so the duo made their way to through the forest, tracking the scents of the boars in hopes of a nice meal.

The forest was alive with noise. Crickets chirping, owls hooting, wolves singing. If only it wasn't for the boars... Asphodel sighed as he patrolled his given area. He was downwind of the absolutely putrid smelling herd of wild hairy monsters that littered this area of the herd lands, and his sensitive nose wrinkled in response. Somehow he knew he was being punished for starting that fight with his son, the one he'd abandoned out of fear as a basket. His ears flipped backwards as he remembered the event. His one night stand had showed up out of the blue with a basket on a sledge dragging behind her, and had unceremoniously dumped it into his care and left, without so much as a word. Terrified at the idea of being a father he'd gone to his friend Lafayette, a strange chickenish looking Soquili, and together they had found someone to take it in. Little did he know he'd grow quite a bit since his son's birth and adopt a basket, his little star Cassiopeia, that he raised himself with no help and through that daughter join the same herd as his son... It was all a mess and he still wasn't sure what to do about it all... His son, Aconitum, was determined to be bitter about it all and honestly he couldn't blame him, but neither could he step down. Not as one of the herd protectors. He'd be a laughing stock if he did, and this was something that would not do! Another sigh left his lips before a high pitched squeal broke the night's silence and he turned his ears to listen, the great size of them giving him a superior advantage in this respect. It was not uncommon for the boars to randomly squeal but this one sounded distressed so he waited and listened before investigating. The boars were always fighting among themselves so sounds like this, sounds of distress, were not something one rushed forward to figure out the cause of. His ears flipped this way and that as he listened but no further sounds came forth so he relaxed a bit, before reclining fully and lying down his claws flexing out and scratching the dirt a bit. He licked a patch of dirt away from his upper leg, feeling the pressure of it but no actual sensation. It was this stigma he was born with, the lack of feeling in his skin. It was also his boon as when fighting he could feel no pain. This was what made him an excellent protector, even if his temper tended to get him into more trouble than his warrior profession. An amused smile lit his face, teeth showing, before he flexed his wickedly sharp and curved claws again during the small break he allowed himself this night.

The time passed quickly with the duo finding their prey rather swiftly. A group of around ten boars, ranging in various sizes, were busily rooting around for roughage in a small and fairly open area. Neither Hollow or Shinzui spoke for fear of their prey hearing them. Their padded feet touching gently to the earth, their steps light so as not to make noise as they drew nearer. Sharing a meaningful glance, the two silently split off from one another. It was an old and familiar tactic of theirs. With both staying downwind of their quarry, one would charge the chosen target, pushing it unknowingly towards the other in a pinch maneuver. The other would wait patiently for the most opportune range to strike- for it would vary depending on which of them was doing it- before pouncing on the animal in one fluent motion. While boars were difficult to take down, the tactic would work well enough to net them plenty of food for the night. Hollow was a strong and capable charmed Purewalker, and Shinzui was no pushover when it came to the hunt. So long as they avoided the tusks then all should be well. Sticking to the cover of the trees, the duo made their move. Shinzui launched himself at the family of boars with a yip. Startled and confused, the prey did exactly as planned and raced off, straight in Hollow's direction. The feral cat's claws extended in rapt anticipation of what was to come. One...two...three! All was said and done in just under two minutes. The only fuss coming from the few boars whom managed to escape their trap and flee into the night. No need to worry about them, however. They had managed to snag three of the ten boars in total. Plenty for both of them to gorge on till their heart's delight. "That went smoother than anticipated." Shinzui admitted while coming to stand alongside his bonded. His piercing blue eyes glimpsing the deceased boar under the feral cat's claws. "Heh," Hollow snirked. "You make it sound as if we have a difficult time of it. When has this maneuver ever failed us?" The wolf thought about it for a moment. There were many instances where the pinch technique hadn't gone as planned. Certainly, it had typically ended up for the best in the end, but there were issues with it. "Would you like me to name them alphabetically or chronologically?" Hollow rolled his eyes. "I could name similar circumstances for yourself in the same way." He tossed back at the wolf. Leave it to Shinzui to be the kill joy. "You really do like to nitpick at my maneuvers, don't you?" "Only when the need arises." Shinzui's mouth quirked in a grin. As much as the two bickered, they had come to a value each other's opinions. Theirs was a complex friendship which revolved around the most basic of concepts- respect and understanding. "Yes, well, tonight is not that night. For tonight our tactic worked perfectly. Three boars of decent size. A feast worthy of our efforts! And I am ready to eat until my heart's content." He lowered himself to the ground beside his catch, mouth watering at the thought of a good meal. While it wasn't the biggest of the three, Hollow was content enough. Shinzui could pick whichever of the remaining two he wished and the third could be split between them. "Agreed." His wolf friend inclined his head, smile still upon his lips, as he stepped to the others. It took little time for him to choose the smaller of the boars and settled down to feast. The sounds of distressed boars fleeing in the distance going unnoticed by the hungry duo.

Aiyana had decided to go for a walk, having been staying in the meadow for the most part lately. She was pregnant with her and Star's second batch of children, so the herd was ever watchful of her. As long as she stayed on herd land, however, she had convinced them to go for walks once in awhile. If things got too bad, she had Yamka in her hair, ready to sound the alarm. Considering how well protected their herd was, she wasn't too worried about it. Anyone who meant harm would be in for a nasty surprise if they tried anything. A smile came to her lips as she thought of anyone coming across any of their protectors.
As she walked, the pink haired alpha of the Odakota herd thought about how much had changed since she had first laid down in that flowery meadow that was now a part of their herd. Before that, of course, she had met Kagehoshi and the two had become adopted siblings. While in the meadow, she had met the love of her life, Star Blayze and they had decided to start this herd. She became pregnant with their first children, who were now wonderful adults. Also, she found out one of her sister's, Xara, had survived the fire and had made it to her herd. Sadly, she was blind, but at least the other had also found the love of her life. It made her beam thinking how lovely those to were, Zatarra was definitely a blessing for her sister. Not only that, but her parents were also alive and here with them now. Her father had found them first and then her mother had surprised them with her appearance. It made her wonder if her other sister might be alive somewhere too, she could only hope so. Hoshi had managed to find himself someone to love and they had little ones of their own. In addition, they had gained quite a few members to their herd, each bringing their own skills to the mix.
Aiyana was brought out of her thoughts by the squealing of boars and her emerald eyes turned to see what was going on. That is when she saw some panicked boars race past her, which brought concern to her eyes. It wasn't usual that they would get so upset like this, what had gotten into them?! She decided she would investigate as carefully as she could. As quietly as she could muster, she hurried in the direction they had come from. Getting closer, the smell of blood filled her nostrils, making her feel a little queasy. Then her eyes widened when she came upon the scene of three boars being torn into by a wolf and what looked like a big cat. Neither of them she recognized and she had this bad feeling about the cat. A gasp came from her and she began to back away, hoping one of their protectors was nearby.

The sound of high pitched squealing and a stampeding noise perked up his massive ears but it was the soft gasp, a voice he easily recognized, that had him instantly on his feet and moving. The ethereal appendages flickering in and out of existence as they sped over the ground. As he moved closer the scent of blood invaded his nose and against all odds he managed to eek more speed out of his gait. Finally the trees parted and he was in the clearing the boars usually made home, quickly he locked his knees and skidded to a halt. Yellow glowing eyes looked about and caught sight of his Alpha and then over to the sight of a large brown cat and a wolf feasting on three dead boars. A growl rumbled up his throat as he too sensed something very off about the cat. He side stepped keeping his slitted eyes always on the unknown duo until he was abreast of his Alpha and said, "You trespass and take what is not yours... Explain yourselves!" His deep voice was tinged with a promised violence if they did not answer him. Word Count: 192

As he believed, the boar meat was absolutely superb! Hollow relished in its gamey taste, allowing the iron-rich blood to run down along his chin and coat the inside of his mouth. The meat itself tender and readily devoured. He would certainly be eating more once his current kill was completely eaten. Perhaps he might even take the time to partake in sucking some of the marrow from the bones when all was said and done. “So, was I right or was I right?” The large feline grinned smugly over at his wolf companion, not caring that his mouth was full of the luscious meal. Shinzui lifted his eyes to stare back at Hollow. “I believe…that is not…so much a choice…” A tug or lick would emphasize each string of words as he partook in his own boar. Hollow snorted at the typical response. “Is it truly so difficult for you to admit you are wrong?” The sounds of eating were the only answers that greeted him. Typical Shinzui. He knew that the wolf wouldn’t rise to the obvious bait. However, that didn’t mean that Hollow wasn’t going to keep pressing the issue. He always had fun in times such as this. Drawing out the wolf in a friendly debate of tactics and discussions of counterpoints. “Since you are enjoying the meal so much, I am going to take that as a yes. Which means that my tactics are flawless…per usual.” An impish light touched his dark eyes. The stallion silently counting down the seconds until the wolf would make his retort. Alas, his fun was cut short by the faintest of gasps. Ears swiveled in the direction that the noise had issued from. His muscles tensed, though he didn’t move to strike or anything of the sort. He darted his eyes back to Shinzui whom appeared to be in the same state of unease. It wasn’t until the snarling voice of another echoed across the clearing that Hollow made any move whatsoever. “Why are we in need of explaining ourselves when you are the ones who disturb us?” Hollow shifted on the ground so that he could face the duo on his right properly. A young pink-haired mare, obviously pregnant, stood in shocked silence behind the black-haired stallion who had been the one to speak seconds earlier. The feline noticed instantly that the latter possessed some oddly feline qualities, yet he lacked a pelt. So, not a Skinwalker or Purewalker…“You come accusing us of things you do not know about. How are we in the wrong? Were you the one to kill these boars? No, I think not. On top of that, you say that we trespass. Show me. Where is a sign or any indication that this is your territory?” He waved his massive paw about, while keeping the other firmly fixed on his partially devoured meal. “Careful, Hollow.” Shinzui finally spoke, his words laced with warning for his bonded not to push matters too far. “We do not know much about this land. We could very well be trespassing, albeit unintentionally.” “Heh,” Hollow spared a brief glance at his friend. He lowered his voice for only the wolf to hear. “Be that as it may…I refuse to let another berate me for winning a meal fair and square.” The large cat then returned his attention back to the others. “Well, Mister Grumpy? What have you to say?”

Aiyana let out a sigh of relief when she heard a very familiar growl coming from next to her. Turning her head slightly, she saw Asphodel, getting into a protective stance in front of her. Her emerald eyes turned to the cat and wolf duo, watching their movements, to see what they would do. Despite being confronted by Del, the cat only seemed to move enough to face them, not attack at all. This surprised her, to be honest, she was expecting the...well, strange cat to get more defensive than that. The shock she was feeling wore off as the creature spoke, asking why they had to explain themselves, when the two of them interrupted them. However, despite feeling a small amount of irritation welling up inside her, she allowed the cat to finish his verbal tirade.
Once the cat had finished, she was about to explain, when she caught movement from Del and heard one of those menacing growls of his. The pink haired mare winced in her mind, knowing her friend had not taken too kind to the 'Mister Grumpy' comment. She mentally sighed as the white stallion began to advance and she knew what would happen if she didn't stop it. So taking a deep breath, she extended her wing and made a movement, one she hoped the protector caught. It was a signal the herd had developed to wordlessly call off an attack, one of the many signals they had. Once that was done, she turned her emerald orbs back to the cat, so she could speak to him. If it made even the slightest movement to attack her, she would not hesitate in rescinding her order to Del. Clearing her throat, she made sure attention was on her for the moment, before addressing the duo.
"I apologize if we interrupted your meal, Sir Cat and Mister Wolf. However, my friend does have a very valid reason for asking for an explanation. This territory belongs to Odakota Herd, meaning the boar you have been eating belonged to us. If you doubt by words, let me show you how you can tell this is our land, if I may. Yamka, would you be a dear and fly to that tree near us and show them our marking please?"Aiyana requested, keeping her composure as best as she could. Her heart was still racing from the fear of coming across a cat feasting on one of their boars. Of course, some of their familiars ate meat, but she at least knew them. This cat was different than their familiars and she could not put her hoof on the how. Her mind was brought out of her thoughts as she felt Yamka take off from her head and fly over to one of the nearby trees. The small bat took a piece of colorful fabric and raised it up, showing their symbol of a star with a flower in it. The fabric and the drawings made by Linnea were the signs that this was Odakota's land. With her horn, she motioned to the tree, so the pair of strangers would take note.
