Hello to my glorious guild members! I know some of you are returning members and that some of you are just unfamiliar with the avatar builder and how it works, so I've made a handy guide for tips and tricks that work with the builder!

ACCESSING THE AVATAR BUILDER

The avatar builder is located under the pull down menu of my gaia:

Simply click the button and you will be taken to the avatar builder!

(Note: They usually take the builder down when they're about to release a new RIG, so if it isn't available, check back in a few hours.)

GHOSTING

Ghosting (or as the old timers might know it, creating an enviro avatar) is the term used to indicate that you're making an avatar with someone else usnig their inventory.

1. Enabling Ghosting:

For someone to be able to ghost you, you must have ghosting enabled. To do so, simply click the check mark at the top of the screen that says "enable ghosting."

2. How to ghost:

If you click on the blue "ghost" a search bar with a zero in it will pop up.In this bar, you'll post the Ghost ID of the person you want to make an avatar for!

3. Ghost ID:

Your ghost ID is your profile code--it can be found by clicking a user's profile and copying the number at the very end. Simply copy that code( as you can see, mine is 3264704) and paste it in the search bar on the avatar builder page!

Note: To go back to your own inventory after ghosting someone else, simply enter 0 as your value.

Note 2: If you are having trouble getting someone's inventory to pop up, make sure that you didn't leave an extra space in front of their ghost ID, the builder doesn't like that.

INTERACTING WITH THE BUILDER

Okay, so now that you know how to access the avatar builder and a little bit about ghosting, how do you actually use the the thing?

User Image

1. Item Database vs. Inventory

The pull down menu highlighted as number 1 allows you to switch between all the items on gaia and the items in your (or the person your ghosting) inventory.

2. Making Items Appear:

So, I'm sure you've noticed if you've pulled up the avatar builder yourself that there aren't actually any items to BUILD with there. You fix that by hitting the handy go button--if you've put nothing in the search bar, it will pull all the items on gaia or all the items from your or the person you're ghosting's inventory, depending on what you put the pull down menu on.

3. Saving an Avatar

The Save Image button is a lie and if you press it, it will only lead to hard times and a long journey.

Instead, use the handy BBC code generator! Click on the appropriate link, male, female, or paw, and it generates bbc code that you can post in the forums to display your creation and all the items on it! Simply copy the code and paste it into your post.

4. Getting NAKED.

the buttons are pretty much what they say on the tin-- I believe they've fixed this error, but if you have trouble getting an item to remove with the "get naked" button, try reloading the building and unequipping each item individually. It's a pain, but it works.

The reset button, also located by get naked, puts back the outfit the avatar was originally wearing, just like the buttons in your inventory.

5. Selecting a base

You can use this feature to see how your avatar would look with any of gaias many bases.

Note: if you have human avatar items equipped, they won't show up on a paw avatar, you'll have to locate the paw equivalent item with the search bar.

SEARCHING FOR ITEMS

So, if you haven't noticed, there are a METRIC $#!+TON of items on Gaia now, so wading through the item database with no guidance can be daunting. Here are a few handy tricks that can help you find what you're looking for more easily!

1. Colors

One of the easiest ways to locate items with the builder is searching by color if you put "pink" in the search bar, the builder will pull all items from the database that have AT LEAST ONE POSE TAGGED PINK. So you'll still get a lot of things, but it's a start.

You can also search for more specialized colors, like mint or lilac.

Not only that, but you can search two colors at once, by putting "mint pink" in the search bar and finding all the items tagged with that color combo.

2. Poses

If you really just want to find a good arm for your avatar, another thing you can search is "arm mod" (this also works for leg mod, head mod, or eyes, lips, mouths, ect.). A note on this, however: This will bring up ALL THE POSES IN AN ITEM, not just the poses that are arm mods or eyes or whatever, so you'll have to look through them.

3. Play With Words

Storm will bring up different items than cloud and electric will bring up different items than shock--if you aren't finding items you like with one search term, be sure to try synonyms to find more items.

The best thing about the avatar builder is that, unlike tektek, you can see the way things will layer immediately, so it saves you a lot of time. Play around with it and you're sure to master it in no time!

Note: All of these searching tips will also work with the search bar located in the dressing room and in your inventory--have fun making avatars friends!
