Are you tired of Bonelands things yet? I hope not, because they also need Omama! Omama are a very important part of the pride's social structure, but unfortunately we have no active Omama at this time. If you're interested in playing an Umama, please read on...
(And read up on Bonelands Info if you're not familiar!)

Quote:
Umama | (pl. Omama)

The term means Umama means mother, the reasoning being that the Ithambo’hlabathi pride bases social structure on mothers. Females will often relate to the subgroup that their mother relates to and the leaders of these groups are simply called Umama. These females are generally the eldest, although it is generally accepted that they should still be able to hunt, and they are the backbone and organizing force of their subgroup of females. She watches over all the cubs, knows everyone’s name, and often has a great deal of patience and ability to speak. She brings complaints and opinions directly to the males, and has enough backing from her female associates to challenge him if he tries to take a stance that she does not believe is right. More often than not, she’ll lead hunting parties or assign a female to lead. There can be more than one Umama in a group, though there is generally only one.

Originally, the pride consisted of two subgroups, one for darker colors and one for lighter colors, but over time it has become less about physical differences and more about differences of opinion. The subgroups are very fluid, so far as belonging to one or the other goes, and can merge together, be absorbed one into another, or even just fade away. The state of subgroups in the pride has been in flux for some time, but especially so during the drought, and as the Ithambo'hlabathi moves past the recent hardship and into the reign of new Abaholi, these are the subgroups they move forward with:

(Please note that ICly, the groups aren't actually referred to by these or any formal names. If anything, they're "Umama So-and-so's." )

    The Conservative Subgroup
Highly traditional, lionesses of this subgroup adhere very strictly to Bonelands conventions.
  • Coat Color: only natural colors and reds are considered acceptable, and members of this group will look down on, if not outright harass, unnaturally-colored individuals. Opinions on red do vary within this group; some much older lionesses may still disapprove of it, though this opinion has largely died out as a consequence of Andhaka's time as Umholi and the subsequent prevalence of red in born-in members.
  • Rogue Breeding: frowned upon outside of a rogue swap. The mother and cubs will likely be 'encouraged' to join another subgroup.
  • Breeding Males: the darker the mane, the better! Dark-maned males are believed to be stronger and healthier, and few in this group would consider breeding with a pale-maned male if there were better options available to them. The choice between a pale-maned Umholi/Inselelo or a dark-maned rogue would be something of a toss-up, depending on the strength of an individual's opinions on one matter or the other. Most females in this group are also likely to prefer that the males not stick their nose into cub-rearing.
  • Ehluke: accepted so long as they do their part to hunt and cubsit, but they rank very low socially, and may face derision from some of the lionesses for choosing to stay instead of leaving the pride to become a 'real' male.

    The Moderate Subgroup
    A happy medium, naturally.
  • Coat Color: natural colors and reds are greatly preferred, with no stigma remaining against the latter. A small amount of unnatural color is tolerable, though still not ideal, while predominantly unnatural colors will still carry some stigma. They will rank lower socially, but won't be openly harassed.
  • Rogue Breeding: is still not embraced by this subgroup, mainly because the cubs will be Lusizi and, therefore, their chances of survival will be lower, so it's seen as something of a selfish act by the mother. They will not be chased from the group, however.
  • Breeding Males: will still be preferred by some in this group to have dark manes, but by and large less emphasis is placed on the old belief that darker manes equate to strength; after all, there have now been several Inselele with lighter manes, who were clearly strong and healthy or they would not have earned the rank.
  • Ehluke: so long as he hunts, cubsits, and takes no interest in females, a male who takes the Ahluke rank is generally welcome in this subgroup, but in social status he will still be ranked below the females.

    The Progressive Subgroup
Who needs tradition? We can do what we want! (Mostly.)
  • Coat Color: natural colors and reds are still dominant by far, and by some will still be considered inherently better than unnatural colors, but unnaturally-colored individuals will not be harassed or treated harshly.
  • Rogue Breeding: who a lioness breeds with is entirely her own business. As long as she doesn't keep him around, this subgroup doesn't raise a fuss about a lioness breeding with an outside male, though the offspring will still be of the lowest rank until they reach maturity.
  • Breeding Males: personal preference will vary, but if they do their job properly, the color of a male's mane usually holds less importance for females in this group.
  • Ehluke: so long as he hunts, cubsits, and takes no interest in females, a male who takes the Ahluke rank is very welcome in this subgroup, but in social status he will still be ranked below the females.

    The Qyrhyeshti Subgroup
This subgroup is still an informal one, as there is no designated/official Umama at this time, but it is a subgroup everyone is well-aware of regardless, comprised of the refugees who arrived in the lands during the drought and exterminated a troublesome local hyena clan in return for admittance into the pride. Currently, it consists almost solely of the Qyrhyeshti, and their views and culture are a hybrid mix of Bonelands and what they brought with them. They continue to value strength and fighting ability very highly and keep themselves in fighting condition, and are willing to teach other females to fight as well.
  • Coat Color: natural colors and reds are still dominant by far, but unnaturally-colored individuals will not be harassed or treated harshly. Strength and intelligence are highly prized in this subgroup, with appearance a distant third in terms of importance.
  • Rogue Breeding: due to their emphasis on strength and intelligence, this subgroup will generally prefer Abaholi and Inselele to father their litters, as they have proven themselves. A female interested in breeding with a rogue is expected to test them in a fight first - if the male can tie or best her, he is suitable.
  • Breeding Males: very few in this group will place any real importance on the color of a male's mane.
  • Ehluke: are accepted only if they truly have no interest in females (are asexual or homosexual). Anyone else will be discouraged from staying, and lionesses in this group are likely to chase their sons out even before the Abaholi get around to it, expecting them to go out and make something of themselves.

Would you like an Umama? Hooray! We need Omama for the Conservative, Moderate, and Progressive subgroups! Any existing, born-in lioness can apply, but they should (obviously) have beliefs in line with the subgroup that they lead. Don't have anyone who meets those criteria? That's okay! You can apply with a character concept that does, and if you win your Umama will be colored for you.

To apply with an existing lioness, use this form:

Lioness' Name:
Lioness' History:
Lioness' Personality:
Group Applying For:
Why would she make a good Umama?

Special Considerations for Concept Characters
Coloring and design of concept characters will ultimately be up to Meepfur, but they will comply with Bonelands color preferences.

Character concepts will need to use NPC mothers who were either Umzingeli (born-in members) or Busisa (outside lionesses who joined). Depending on the age of the concept character, the options for their fathers are as follows:
  • Matifu: any lioness with Matifu as their sire would be old; not necessarily elderly, but they would probably be able to produce only one, maybe two more litters, and have almost certainly had at least one by now.
  • Rogue Swap: as there hasn't been one of these in a very long time, a lioness born as a result of a rogue swap would be contemporary in age to one sired by Matifu.
  • Rogue: a lioness sired by a rogue (outside of a swap) could be any age. She would have been Lusizi - "unfortunate" - as a cub, holding very low rank and eating last until she reached maturity and underwent her Ukuzalwa. It is unlikely, but not impossible, that a rogue-sired lioness would lead the Conservative Subgroup.
  • Bangizwe: she would be a fairly young adult, at most just old enough to have had a litter just now grown to adulthood.
  • Andhaka: she would be a fairly young adult, at most just old enough to have had a litter just now grown to adulthood (but she would not have had cubs yet, for whatever reason, since Andhaka only having one set of grandcubs so far has been mentioned ICly).

Character concepts may be written in their history as having had a litter or litters in the past, in which case your options for the litter's sire would be:
  • Rogue Swap: because there hasn't been one of these since Matifu was around, a lioness who was old enough to have cubs during a rogue swap would now be very old, too old to bear another litter.
  • Rogue: these cubs would have been Lusizi, holding very low rank and eating last until they reached maturity. This is not an option for someone applying for the Conservative Umama.
  • Bangizwe: these cubs would be young adults by now, possibly old enough to have had cubs of their own if they had chosen to do so (but haven't yet).
  • Andhaka: these cubs would be young adults by now, possibly old enough to have had cubs of their own if they had chosen to do so (but haven't yet).

[If you opt for your concept character to have offspring, they will be colored and given away through BL events, including but not limited to a participation raffle for this and/or the Umholi+Inselelo contest.]

To apply with a character concept, use this form:

Lioness' Name+Meaning:
Lioness' History:
Lioness' Personality:
Group Applying For:
Why would she make a good Umama?

    Rules
  • You don't need to have any Bonelands lions to apply! Just take some time to read up on the pridal info to familiarize yourself with it before creating and applying with a concept character.
  • You can apply for any or all of the positions, but will need a different character and/or concept character for each application, since they each require characters with different opinions and ideals. However many you enter for, you can only win one.
  • As it is possible for a group to have two Omama, this may occur.
  • If you disappear or become inactive for a prolonged period of time, your Umama may lose her position and be replaced.
  • This contest will remain open for two weeks from its posting.

Lioness' Name: Umlotha
Lioness' History: Born to a lioness and a god, Umlotha grew up going against the grain. She learned the ways of the Bonelands and said 'nah'. She still stays in the pride because it's home, but she's always looking for ways to irritate the other lions in the pride or to get them talking about her.
Lioness' Personality: Mischevious and a bit of a trouble maker. She enjoys being the center of attention, regardless if the attention is good or bad. She is aware that her coloration is heavily favored as far as the Bonelands go and that just makes going against tradition all the more fun in her eyes.
Group Applying For: Progressive
Why would she make a good Umama? Umlotha....actually was slated to be an Umama |D She has three lionesses that would support her, Quaji colored up some lions for me to give away for that purpose. I just never got around to getting her rank changed oTL Umlotha also just had a large litter of cubs sired by a rogue male but they can easily pass as Bangizwe's. She is known to not have been interested in either of the old lions though, and now that they're gone there's only her to shrug and grin when asked who the father is. Drama! But she'd be a good Umama because despite liking to stir the pot, she is a strong and intelligent lady who might make those who don't feel quite at home more comfortable in the pride. She doesn't discriminate against non-natural colors, she is obviously for lionesses rogue breeding, and doesn't take 'no' for an answer. She would definitely make any Abholi know they might be the kings, but she runs the show.

Lioness' Name+Meaning: Nenkani (Stubborn, Zulu)
Lioness' History:

Born to an Umzingeli, sired by Matifu. Nenkani is old and set in her ways.. but her ways are the exact opposite of what most would expect. Her ‘progressive’ nature started as a rebellious phase during her adolescence and she was relentless about arguing for these non-traditional ideals. It was especially irritating to her mother, who would fit firmly into the conservative group. When she was born, Nenkani was actually given the name Entsha (Adventurous, Zulu) but before she could attend her first hunt, her mother declared that she should be renamed. Since she was not yet zalwa, her mother insisted she still had that right. Truthfully, she was trying to get a reaction out of her daughter.. and Nenkani took the same approach and accepted the new name given to her.

Despite their cultural leanings, she and her mother were actually very close (and very similar, as shown above). They frequently butted heads and bickered openly, but there was still love between them. The best explanation either could give when asked why they still cared (or why they kept arguing) was always simply “she’s my mother/daughter”. Nenkani was devastated when her mother eventually passed away.

She never seemed to outgrow the rebellion but as she matured, it became habit that became simple truth for her. She knows she was being a brat when she was younger, it got her a lot of attention.. but as it slowly became a more acceptable opinion to have, she realized she really did believe it.

Nenkani has had one litter previously, sired by Andhaka. It was small, no more than 2-3 cubs, and long overdue. Fertility issues run in her family, though it is not openly discussed/acknowledged. Her own mother had only the one litter and it was small, too. She has, in secret, tried many times over the years to have cubs and she was very pleased when it finally happened- especially since it was by Andhaka, who was setting a new trend in socially acceptable colors. This is why her family (outside of Matifu’s descendants) has remained small within the pride; herself and her daughter(s) could very well be the only remaining members of her mother’s line.

It was one of her hunting parties that was interrupted by Kuhasa and Zahif’s shenanigans, and she was among those to advocate for his acceptance as Inselelo even without a proper challenge. (( This is probably true of the progressive Umama, whoever it ends up being. xD ))

She is still active, happy and healthy but she knows she is old and by this point ICly, she would be seeking a second Umama for her group to follow when the inevitable happens. OOCly, I am absolutely not afraid to kill off characters but wouldn’t do so thoughtlessly, especially in a case like this. But I greatly enjoy older characters and I am more than happy to use this kind of opportunity as a sort of place-holder for an active rank. I know from experience that in prides with few special ranks, it’s very nice to have some flexibility built in.

Lioness' Personality:

Bold and outgoing, she’s never stopped being the type to voice her opinions and she seems to enjoy a good argument (other Omama definitely love that she could spend a whole day debating an issue). Otherwise, she’s kind and respectful (arguing without name-calling counts as respectful!) to just about everybody. She can be a mother hen, especially to those in her own group who look to her for leadership.. and most of all to Ehluke, since they are generally not zalwa and therefore seem especially as children.

She can come off as condescending (and sometimes is, of course) but at this point, she’s stopped trying to work on that.

Group Applying For: Progressive
Why would she make a good Umama?

She’s spent most of her life advocating the beliefs of the progressive subgroup and fully embraces the idea that the world is not simply as black and white as some of the more conservative lionesses would insist. The fact that she’s good at making herself heard and isn’t afraid to get involved in just about anything help a great deal. And, let’s be honest, her age doesn’t hurt. The fact that they can have their very own old lady is great. Neither Abaholi nor other Omama can brush her off as an inexperienced idealist who is just causing trouble [even though that was definitely once true.. shhhh..]

Second Concept - technically added after the 2 week cut off, here for interest anyway.

Lioness' Name+Meaning: Thuthuka (Become Important, Zulu)
Lioness' History:

Born to an Umzingeli, sired by Matifu. Thuthuka is old and set in her ways.. and her ways are exactly what most would expect. Born to a conservative mother with her only sister an obnoxiously progressive rebel- yes, Nenkani- Thuthuka’s view of pride life stayed much closer to home.

Her youth was much simpler and quieter than Nenkani’s. Unlike her mother she never had any appreciation for her sister’s antics, and when they butted heads it was significantly less amicable. As the progressive viewpoint became more prevalent, she relented to some degree.. but will forever tout the value in tradition.

Thuthuka has only ever successfully borne cubs once and, coincidentally, it was around the same time as Nenkani. Her cubs, however, were sired by Bangizwe and she had the bad luck to have only sons. Her disappointment was a poorly kept secret, but she pushed her sons to grow strong and independent and make something of themselves. Umkhombo’s recent return has renewed her hope in the idea that one of her sons may someday return. Still, she dotes on Nenkani’s daughter(s), having always hoped they would lean more towards her side of things than their mother’s.

Like Nenkani, she’s active, happy, healthy and well aware of her old age. She would also be looking at eventual retirement and I would not be seeking to hold onto the special rank forever.

** In the event either one is chosen, I’d like if the other could have passed away during the drought **

Lioness' Personality:

Thuthuka’s basic personality is very similar to her sister’s, but she will fight anybody who says so. She’s not afraid to speak her mind or argue endlessly, though she doesn’t get any enjoyment out of the argument unless she wins. She won’t coddle anybody but her behaviour could still be called motherly.. she’s just a very stern mother with high expectations.

Group Applying For: Conservative
Why would she make a good Umama?

She’s an old lady with roots in the pride and a firm belief in traditional values.

Honestly, I just had fun with making up Nenkani and Thuthuka came about from expanding on that while worrying the contest might not get at least one entry for each category. In the end, I liked her too much as well and I couldn’t leave her out.

Lioness' Name: Kokulzawa
Lioness' History: Born in the pride to a mother who died not long after her cubs were juveniles, as the oldest Kokulzawa took it upon herself to make sure her sisters were looked after and cared for, because of this desire she has spent her time being the carer for her siblings and her siblings children instead of having cubs herself.
Lioness' Personality: Kokulzawa is a no nonsense lioness, she is stalwart and straight forwards, she likes to speak her mind, when it comes to her family she will protect them to within an inch of her life.
Group Applying For: Moderate
Why would she make a good Umama? She likes things the way they are and though she is approaching that 'old maid' time of life she sticks to her guns and insists on caring for those around her instead of for herself. She loves cubs and she considers the other lionesses in the pride to be her family. She will battle with anyone for the rights of her pride mates. Despite not being a mother she is the most motherly of lionesses.

Lioness' Name: Buna
Lioness' History: She's lived in the Bonelands her entire life and was raised with proper Bonelands traditions. She's had one litter of cubs, with Surtak. All cubs lived to be adults, even if Emeka had an extremely close call in a hunting accident. So far they haven't given her any grandcubs, and one of the males haven't even left the pride!

Lioness' Personality: Buna is loyal but can be a bit stubborn at times. She is a traditionalist with little patience when younger lionesses come up with stupid (in her opinion) ideas. She's a mature lioness and is confident that her strength and experience will take her where she need to go.

She doesn't cope well with change, so anything new makes her grumpy. Needless to say she's often grumpy.

Group Applying For: Conservative group
Why would she make a good Umama? She's got the proper upbringing to help guide the new generation and she's at a fairly respectable age. Thanks to her being in the pride a long time she's seen Abaholi come and go and coped with change (against her will at times). Perhaps the most valuable skill she's learned is to chose her battles. She'll state her opinion loudly, but she will sometimes let things slide if it's not a very important issue to her group.

Lioness' Name: Safura
Lioness' History: Safura didn't have much of a past before she came to the Bonelands. She traveled the Roguelands with her twin sister. While her twin was the brawn, Safura was the brain and she eventually realized that while they made an excellent team, it would make more sense for them to join a pride. The pride they found first was the Bonelands and so they joined as Busisa. She's been living there ever since.
Lioness' Personality: Now, Safura has always been an ambitious lioness. When she saw the way prestige was earned in the pride, by having cubs and being exceptionally good at hunting, she decided to try for the title associated with the former. New to the pride, she was smart enough to realize that having cubs with Andhaka had already been done, but having cubs with Kuhasa, a lion newer to the pride, might be more exciting. She didn't understand the mane stigma that some of the older lionesses had against Kuhasa. While she valued the opinions of others, hoping to gain quick favor within the pride, she was not afraid to stay true in her decesion to have Kuhasa's cubs and didn't care about the shade of his mane. Now feeling confident enough to make her own decisions, rather than just seeking to mirror the opinions of others for popularity's sake, Safura has started forging her own path in the pride, wanting to be the best at, well, everything.
Group Applying For: Moderate
Why would she make a good Umama? Safura values both sides of the other two groups arguments. She understands the importance of progress and thinks that the stigma for mane color is a silly superstitious notion. However, she also takes pride in following the old traditions of the past and remembering those that came before them. Honoring those the traditions like as in rogue breeding (not encouraging it, but not chasing out those who were involved) and progressing forward (not showing intense stigma against those who do not adhere to the traditions) are both very important to her. As such, I believe she has the potential to become a good Umama.
In character, I should point out that she will be trying to become the Umama just for the sake of rank, but once she realizes the weight of the position, rather than falter and abandon her post, she will rise to the occasion and become more than a superficial lioness who only wants to have cubs for the sake of popularity gain. She will step up to the task, if it is given to her.

Moderate Umama:
Syrius Lionwing

Conservative Umama:
Annchen

Your participation prize, one of the Andhaka x Nenkani daughters - please speak to Ecavi about her upbringing and history! She HAS inherited her family's fertility issues, and if/when she breeds, you will need to make a note on the form that the results from her roll should be cut in half. (Her litters should not exceed 4 cubs, including custom-ins.)
