Briinah was on her way home. She had taken a walk up the mountain path to one of Bergchi's shrines for some much needed contemplation. She felt refreshed as if her father's spirit was with her. She couldn't help but admire the beauty that surrounded her. The setting sun's light refracted and bounced off the hazy pollen filled air. The space around her seemed aglow, and she knew her mother would like to hear about it.
As she descended down the path to Dernd the light faded and dusk quickly turned to dark. She hurried as she knew mother hated it when she was out late. It always made her worry. She didn't want her to worry any more than she already did.

Warren could hardly believe what was happening. What had happened. He was still in the house his mother lived. Dernd was a quiet place that never saw tragedy. Its close knit community kept to themselves and everyone was kind. The Sermal attack that had just happened to Ah'Brii was the kind of tragedy that Dernd would remember and talk about for generations.
Warren wept as he cradled his mothers broken corpse in his arms. He was covered in blood, glass, splinters from his tussle with the animal. He had come to make amends with his mother. Instead he was witness to her horrific death. She had always feared he was the Dread Sermal and he would transform into a beast and kill her. It seemed to be an inevitable horror for Ah'Brii. Her fragile mind was convinced this would happen to her since she gave birth to Warren.

Briinah had an eerie feeling as she approached the house, the critters around her seemed unusually silent and she thought she could hear a large animal; perhaps a deer, fleeing into the southern woods.
As she stepped onto the porch of the house she could see her mothers tea, unattended at the kitchen table. This pegged her as odd, even mother would stay up to see that Briinah returned home safely.
"Mother I'm home!" she called out.
As she walked in the house she could hear some cracking noises and footsteps like someone large was in the house. Both her mother and grandfather were thin and hardly made much noise when they walked. This started to set of some alarms in Briinah's mind. She approached the back room cautiously and called out again.
"Mother? Is that you?"

Warren pressed Ah'Brii's face to his, tears still streaming down his face and onto hers. "Mother, I am so sorry." his voice sounded broken. "I will avenge you, I swear I will hunt that beast down."
A noise from the kitchen startled him. He thought he heard some one. Someone had said mother? A sting of panic began to settle in. Who ever it was, would surely think he had attacked Ah'Brii, and not a sermal. It didn't want to leave her like this but he didn't have much choice.
He lifted her broken frame and laid her on the bed. He would have to leave now in pursuit of the sermal if he was ever going to find it again. He couldn't afford the time to explain himself.

Briinah ran down the hallway when she saw the door to her mothers bedroom had been knocked in. Her heart jumped into her throat she could almost feel herself choke on it.
"Mother?!" she screamed.
She stopped in the broken doorway to see an enormous spiked figure standing over her mothers body. Both of them were covered in blood. The way the furniture was tossed about she hardly recognized the room. It felt as if she was looking through a portal to a hideous nightmare. She let out a scream that turned from horror to anger.
"WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!?!?!" Her voice was high pitched and broken from the tears but the anger she felt pored through. She lunged at the monster, ready to scratch and claw just to get him away from her mother.

Warren looked up from Ah'brii's body to the enraged woman in the doorway. He was completely shocked to see what appeared to be his mother as a young woman. Either this was her enraged ghost or it was her daughter. After his mother abandoned him, not once did it occur to him that she may have had other children.
The woman lunged at him, but he jumped back to dodge her flailing. Some how he felt responsible, as if this woman's anger with him was somehow justified. He was the one Ah'brii abandoned, this was the child she chose to raise and keep. He suddenly felt as if he had been abandoned all over again and a deep emptiness opened up inside him.
He knew this was it. He made his way for the window and jumped through. The remaining glass scraped and broke on his body.

Briinah fell onto the bed and put her arms over her mother as if to guard her. "WHY?! WHY DID YOU DO IT?!" her voice was hysterical "WHY DID YOU KILL HER!?" her sobs made the rest of what she said impossible to understand.
She looked over her mothers body and touched her as if she was searching for something to revive her. She could tell by the way her body fell limply and heavily that all life had escaped her. Her chance at a goodbye had been stolen by this monster. After all of her and grandfathers ramblings about the Dread Sermal, it had come true. The monster that terrorized her mothers dreams had come for her. His black eyes, she remembered how much her mother said they haunted her. Ah'brii's body was covered in claw marks and she had been gored with multiple bite wounds.
When the beast fled through the window, she pushed herself off the bed to make chase. "I wil KILL you for this!" she shouted at him as she climbed through the broken window.

He could see lights being lit in the neighboring houses. Her shouting had caused alarm among the settlement. He ran as hard as he could into the woods. He could hear the girl yelling from behind him and saw her jump out the window. The foolish girl! He would have to lose her in the woods before he could begin to track the sermal he managed to wound.
He could feel the blood dripping down his arms and back, he was leaving a trail even a youngling could follow. But it was getting dark and he had to bet she wouldn't follow him to far without aid from the settlement. As far as he could tell she was unarmed and even if she did catch him she would be no match one on one.
Warren crouched down and tried to lose her in the thicker brush while simultaneously keeping an eye out for any tracks or blood from the sermal.

She made after him as fast as she could. "I wont let you get away with this!" She continued to shout after him. But he was fast, he had gotten farther ahead of her than she was having trouble seeing him. She crouched down and listened instead, she tried to follow the sounds.
As she continued her pursuit she noticed some of his blood on the ground and foliage around her. She knew this meant he would be easier to find, and others would be able to pick up the trail. She could hear some of her neighbors behind her. "I'm going to make sure everyone knows what you did!"
"He went this way!" she shouted back to the neighbors who had begun to investigate the house and respond to her yelling.

Warren could tell she was falling farther and farther behind. She sounded far off. He just had to keep pushing on. He did manage to see a few tracks that looked like they might have belonged to a large cat, and a few rocks had blood on them.
While the pursuit of the people of Dernd concerned him, finding the sermal was more pressing in his mind. He decided he was far enough ahead that as long as he kept finding clues he could lose them in the night.
If he could find that sermal, he could prove to them it was the animal that attacked Ah'brii not him. If they believed like his mother had; that he was the Dread Sermal, no amount of talking would convince them of his innocence. His dark eyes were all the evidence they needed to convict him of his crimes.

She could no longer see nor hear him. She slowed her pace to a stop and waited for the others to catch up. "I can't see him! But I think he went this way!" She kept walking but did so slowly. A light started to illuminate her back and she could see her shadow projected onto the dark forest. It was one of her neighbors. He had sort of been like an uncle to her growing up and he had been a friend of her fathers.
She started to cry again when she saw his face. The man pulled her in for a firm hug. He nodded to her and continued on into the woods.
She made her way back to the house slowly. She didn't want to go back in there. It looked like a stranger now. The place she had grown up would never be the same again.

He continued to find bloody paw prints and tracks with the toe missing. He looked at the claw in his hand. This was the only evidence he had to identify the beast. He began to wonder how far it had gone to escape the house. He wondered if it knew he perused it.
Warren savagely wished he could happen upon the beasts den and kill it in its home, if it had cubs all the better. He wanted it to suffer as much if not more than he had. He would track it all night if he had to.

Briinah walked up to the house and found it surrounded by friends and neighbors. They were holding eachother, some of them were crying too. Her grandpa Nitoh came down from the porch and held her.
"You were right grandpa. All this time you were right and I didn't listen" she started to sob again "I-I should have been there" her voice sounded like a whine, as if she had reverted back to a youngling. "I could have saved her! I could have stopped him!"
No matter how old you are, losing a parent will always turn you into a child again. She was lost without her mommy, after losing her father too. She was an orphan, grandpa Nitoh was all she had left.

Warren did not have neighbors or family to comfort him now. In a way this was the second time he had lost his mother. She abandoned him when he was just five, and now she was gone again but this time forever. All he ever wanted was for her to accept him as her son. Even if she could not love him he needed her to know he loved her deep down regardless of what happened between them.
He wanted to make things right by her, even now. He wanted the beast slain, wanted to prove himself a capable guard. He wanted to be worthy of being her son.
