Maeve was grumpily kicking her feet against the seat in the restaurant. If there was anything she liked less than school, it was hanging out with her dad. She'd recently gotten into another altercation in the cafeteria, and despite being a senior, was adamant that she was not too old for this sort of thing. After all, that Nixie had given her a very suggestive look - he deserved to be bitten! And way worse. She was slumped in her seat, a menu held in front of her face, glaring at her father over the table. Sure, he paid for everything for her - but it didn't make her happy to be scolded over yet another meal. At least, she was pretty sure that was why he had brought her out. He hadn't really indicated that, but she had an idea. Someone at the school was always calling him, telling him of her strange and reckless behavior.

She tossed the menu down onto the table, crossing her arms. "So are you gonna just get on with it and lecture me, or what?"

Raenen had not brought his daughter Maeve out for a meal to get her in to trouble. It was true that while Ava and him had extensive conversations about Maeve's behaviour, but Raenen had come to accept that Maeve would do as she wanted. Raenen felt he had no real say in in disciplining his daughter. While he paid for her wants and needs, with little assistance from the academy, Raenen had moved back to the village where the Kumiho were first discovered after his divorce with Esme was finalized.

That was where he had imbued, that is when Maeve had come in to his life. From day one, Raenen had allowed Maeve to dictate her own path. When she had insisted on leaving Below and attending the Academy, Raenen did not protest, despite his sadness to see yet another one of his children choose Below over the life he could provide.

No, this was simply a chance to see his daughter. To spend time with her. Below was quite a ways away from his quaint little village, and while he strongly disliked the city life ... his family was here, and Raenen wanted to spend as much time as he could squeeze out with Maeve as possible.

That's why her comment had caught him so off guard.

"Lecture you ... ? Oh ... about your altercation? I was rather hoping that wouldn't come up today, actually ... "

Maeve started. Really? He hadn't expected it to come up? She didn't get to see her dad very often, but at the very least she thought he would have taken advantage of the opportunity for discipline. Maybe she was getting too used to the caretakers at the Academy. They were supposed to back off as you got older, but Maeve mostly felt like she had a following of them fit for a freshling. But jeez, her dad was so nice. It was hard to stay mad at him, especially for imagined shortcomings. She bit her lip, drumming her fingers on her arm.

It wasn't that she had needed to get away from her father, really. It was just that she was sick of sitting in that same village, living out the same boring life, day after day after day. If she had to light one more stick of incense for her ancestors, she might explode. So when the rest of Below opened up its gates to her, she had to go. And her dad hadn't even put up a fight. Typical.

"So... why are we here then?" She asked haughtily, cautiously, looking at her father as if she were daring him to say something that would set her off. Her temper was on a thin wire these days, and even those she was friendliest with had to tread carefully. But maybe she would give her dad a tiny chance, just for today.

Raenen couldn't keep himself from smiling. How could he have created something so beautiful? Clearly the genes had to be all on the other parent's side. Raenen had never thought of himself as much of a looker. It was a shame that Maeve struggled so much with her temper. Even as a child, her tantrums were long and winded. Raenen had always let her scream her lungs out. It was better then feeling wretched for making your child cry because you yelled at them to stop. It was just best to let them exhaust themselves ... Raenen silently wondered if the same applied to young adults.

"It's been a few months now, Mae ... I wanted to see you, to see your face. Snail mail doesn't allow for me to hear your voice ... it's a warming, soothing sound. Tell me, how have you been filling your days lately? Please, tell me everything about you that I've missed, all the things that cannot fit in letters ... "

Raenen genuinely wanted to be a part of his daughter's life. He wanted to come and visit more often, but paying for his daughter often did not leave much money left over at the end of each month to make trips to see her in person.

"I bought you something ... I brought it with me. Please, fill me in on your life as I grab it out of my bag!"
