Springtime Awakenings

Winter is loosening it's cold grasp upon the land, and life is blooming once more.
White snow is giving way to green grass and flowers begin to bloom.
The cold is still there... but perhaps, not as strong.
A perfect blue-skied day has happened upon the lands, and the warm sun is enticing others from their dry homes to venture out into the sunlight again...

Warmth.

It was the first thing the twins noticed when they stirred from their slumber. They both had formed a ball of comfort, and each seemed to loathe the idea of moving. It wasn't until Catnip noted brightness filtering through the covered hole that she pulled herself from against her sister with a leisurely stretch. Chamomile on the other hand was having nothing of it, and curled into a tighter ball, spritely wings fluttering unhappily as the spot where her sister had laid against her became cold. "Five more years of sleep, please..." She mumbled, causing Catnip to let out a small giggle. "If you had a choice, you would sleep that long!" She was more than used to her sister's incessant need to lounge about.

But she wanted to see the brightness that was gleaming outside. Flicking her large ears, Catnip stepped toward the grass "door" that they had made to keep some of the wind out of their little warren. Her little nose pushed at the grass and lifted it up as gently as her excitement allowed her to, and as she did so, a colony of mice swiftly passed between her feet and out into the world outside. She tittered, following after them with a small leap out of the hole.

Behind her came the groaning of annoyance as her sister finally roused herself as cold air rustled her thick fur, causing her to cover her nose. But finally she opened her different colored eyes and flicked her long tail, causing a plume of dirt to gather in the air. A squeak caused Chamomile to look 'round to her tail, only to see several small head poking their way out to give her a heated look. She tilted her head to the side and crooned apologetically, "I'm sorry, little ones! I thought you had run off with 'n**!" They chattered at her in their own little language, before they disappeared into her tail and crawled to the ground. With little huffs they set out toward the opening and crept out of the hole to follow the others. Chamomile shook her head at their little attitudes and set off after them, stepping out into daylight to stand beside her sister.

She could feel the shift in the air, she could smell freshness coming up from the ground. The buds on her antlers that had closed against the winter's cold began to grow and blossom again. Spring was here.

Well, it was on it's way, at the very least. There was still snow on the ground and the chilly winter breezes had not yet subsided, but she could see the sun through the clouds and the blue sky and-there!-she pressed her muzzle to the ground and pushed away some of the snow: new green blades of grass.

Her spirits lifted, the mare promptly decided that today was an exploring day: one to look for flowers and new life. She set out early, already enjoying the slight change in weather and scenery. Yes, today she was sure to find something wonderful.

What she eventually came across was unexpected to be sure. She would have stepped on them had it not been for their alarmed squeaking. Suddenly seemingly surrounded by mice, Primrose made a noise of alarm herself only to spy two tiny Soquili, the likes of which she had never seen before, coming out of a hole with the mice.
"Oh, do pardon me." She said, both to the mice and the mares. "Um, oh dear... Lovely day, isn't it?" She said to the two mares as she tried to carefully step out of the way of all the mice around her.

Delilah was out wandering about with her adoptive daughter Fenri. Spring was finally starting to show, even if winter still wanted to keep the land in its grip. She had allowed her daughter to talk her into ranging further away from home but it didn't stop her from being nervous. "I don't know Fenri... I think maybe we should turn back. Jeremiah doesn't like us wandering too far. And who knows maybe today he'll be back from that business he needed to take care of."

Fenri sighed and looked over at her mother. She had talked Delilah into coming out to look for flowers and other signs of spring but her mother was still nervous about being so far from home. "Mother.... Jeremiah has never limited us in where we go. You know that and you said you wanted to come with me today. Why are you so... so.... so..." She trailed off cause there was no real point in finishing that sentence. Her mother was just like that, there was no helping her personality. Plus if she knew what Jeremiah really did on his 'business' trips or the fact that they usually had guards following them... well Delilah was liable to just fry her brain. She was just glad that they had managed to throw off the guards for once.

Delilah's eyes grew wide at her daughter's words and she paused briefly before continuing to walk. "I'm sorry! I didn't mean to imply that he did.. or does....and I do want to come. I'm sorry I'm just really nervous. I mean you never know what might be waking up with winter ending." She paused catching the look from Fenri, "I'm sorry! I'm doing it again! I'm really trying but it's hard and I'm..."

Fenri let out a hard snort cutting her mother off. "I know mother. Please do stop apologizing for everything. You have gotten much better and I'm sorry too. I just really want to go and stretch my legs and spend time with you." She replied, "We don't have to go much further and I suppose if we're going to look for flowers we should start paying attention."

Speaking of paying attention Fenri's eye on her chest picked up an interesting scene coming up ahead of them. There was a bunch of mice surrounding a white and pink mare and a couple of tiny Soquili. Fenri stopped in time and opened her mouth to warn her mother. "Ah mother... you should watch.... out." Her warning came too late and she shook her head while sighing.

Delilah hadn't been watching where she was going and thus missed the small gathering just in front of her. She heard a couple of frightened squeaks and then bumped into another mare. "What?! Oh dear..." She looked at the mare with wide eyes and then took in all the mice and the two tiny Soquili, "I am so so sorry! I wasn't paying attention and goodness me please tell me I didn't step on anyone?! I'm sorry if I did!"

At first, the two small mares could only stare blankly at the strangers that had suddenly come into their midst.

"Looooook, Chamo! Giants!" The red-bowed twin said, looking at her sleepy sister with an awestruck gaze.

Chamomile on the other hand, seemed less impressed and more concerned as large paws and hooves stepped closer to her. "T-They could squish us!" She stammered out, multi-colored eyes widening as she peered up at the tall creatures. Her mice squeaked in distress, mimicking their mistress' concerns as they scrambled out of multiple mares' way. One managed to scamper into reach of the long tailed mare and held on for a moment before realizing that the object was moving, in which it decided better of holding onto it and scampered back to where the small mares stood, disappearing into one of the sister's tails.

Catnip giggled quietly, the braver of the two, and stepped forward a few tested steps, looking up at the mares and found herself enamored at all the colors they were, they were like flowers! "Flowers! You are! Flowers! Like a meadow! All the colors!" She stepped, or rather pranced a few steps closer to where Fenri and Primrose stood, excitedly oggling at the flowers the strange mares wore, and as she stepped closer, the flowers seemed to grow even more brilliant in color - excited to be in the presence of a Pixie-blooded Usdia (Pixies have the power to cause flowers to bloom wherever they wander).

Chamomile sighed at her sister's blatant fearlessness, seeming to shrink a bit closer to their hidey hole, having only seen a few large Soquili in her life - she did not know what to expect!

Soon enough, there were two more mares in the area and one of which, Primrose noticed with amazement and delight, possessed paws exactly like her own. Careful not to step on any of the mice who raced around underfoot, she approached the dark blue mare who bore flowers on her antlers and paws where Primrose had normally seen hooves.

"Why... Your paws... Your antlers... I have never seen someone so like me before!" She exclaimed in wonder. "You must tell me, do your flowers grow from out of your antlers like mine do, or perhaps you put them there for decoration? But your paws, oh your paws! Are there many others with paws like ours?" This mare's ears were thick and fluffy, though bigger than Primrose's and... her tail! "Oh my!" Whispered Primrose,
who was more than a little shaken up by the presence of someone who looked so close to her, even if their markings were widely different.

It was only at the nickers of those below her that she peered down at the little Soquili again and smiled at them.
"And hello, hello to you!" She added quickly. "Who might you be?
I am Primrose, hello!
" She said again, hoping they got more caught up with her many greetings instead of her lack of manners earlier.

Delilah's eyes grew wide at hearing what the tiny little mares said. She looked at the other mares and saw that yes they could be considere giants compared to the little ones. However it was what the other one said that really made her eyes widen. They could indeed squish them! "O-oh dear. I would not want to squish you!" She took a couple steps back getting ready to apologize for getting too close and endangering them. However she didn't get the chance as the one came happily over closer to Fenri and the one who was gushing over her daughter.

Fenri felt movement on her tail and looked down to see some mice fleeing her tail. She gave a small chuckle at the silly creatures before focusing on the mare approaching her. She tilted her head as she called her and the other flower adorned mare flowers. "I suppose you could say that?" She said making it more of a question. She did notice that the other antlered mare's flowers were getting brighter. She then tried to look at the ones blooming on her antlers but wasn't able to really see.

She went to ask her mother about it but Primrose began to speak to her so she focused back on her. "Paws... antlers.... um.... you've never seen anyone else with them?" She mumbled looking down at her own a little confused, "Are they really that rare? Huh? Flowers... in my antlers?" She suddenly realized she had been asked a question about the flowers growing on her antlers and brightened up. "Oh! Uh.. I suppose they do. I've never put them there so I guess they just grow there." She replied realizing that Primrose had moved on to a different topic, "I don't know if there are many others with paws. I would imagine so but I haven't really encountered many others when I traveled."

She flicked her tail not realizing that the 'oh my' Primrose whispered was over her fluffy tail. She looked over at her mother when Primrose began to speak with the tiny Soquili. "Oh yes... hello Primrose and little Soquili. I am Fenri."

"I'm sorry! We should have introduced ourselves earlier. I'm Delilah. Fenri is my daughter." Delilah replied quickly hearing some introductions happening, "We didn't mean to interrupt anything or startle or step on anyone."
