Name: Mallan
Age: 19
Sex: Male
Sexual Orientation: heterosexual
Craft: Potential cook/kitchen staff if aged out
Rank: Candidate/Weyrbrat
Location: High Reaches Weyr
Physical Description: Mallan is rather more heavily built than the average lad his age, he has more of a barrel chest and is fairly strong, he doesn't often use his strength outside of carrying heaving things for the kitchens. He has a deep scar over his right eye, marring his eyebrow and separating it neatly with a line of scarring. Obtained in the kitchens when as a younger lad, was trying to show off to a girl, instead of cleaning up a spill on the slick stone floor, he'd overbalanced and slammed into the corner of a table, luckily missing the eye but he'd had a lot of swelling for a good sevenday before he was able to fully return to his studies. Mallan is just under the average height for his age, while he wont be the tallest man on Pern, when he stops growing, he wont be short. His hair is a very dark brown, it looks black when unwashed (which, working in the kitchens... is hardly ever, he likes to keep himself clean). His eyes are a light brown and very expressive when he wants them to be.
Personality: Mallan, at first glance, seems to be a typical weyrbrat, he enjoys company, he'll pull the odd prank with friends and he's started to become seriously aware of the girls. His slight insecurities are there just below that surface though. He works hard to prove to himself and others that he is just as capable as those born at the Weyr, in his younger life he was teased for being 'given away' to the weyr but he also had his friends, those that defended him when the bullies taunted. While he doesn't think about those days conciously, he does hold onto the attitude that he was abandoned and he is afraid of it happening again. It doesn't stop him from making friends but it does make him cautious about approaching girls, afraid of rejection. Most, if not all of Mal's friends are male. Mal's biggest issue is his love of food. He adores mixing flavours and creating new blends of spices to add to dishes the cooks are preparing, he'll help out especially if the rewards are a hot meal or snacks while .. ahem .. sampling the food while its cooking. He has a slightly obsessive routine every morning and every night, he exercises his body daily, which, added to his love of food, seems to be a good thing and it keeps him in shape. He never ever forgets his routine upon awakening and before he beds down for the night, even when injured he will do whatever he can for a good candlemark before he is finished and can start or end his day. In groups Mallan works very well with them, he takes orders very well and prefers knowing what it is he has to do, rather than having to figure it out for other people. Under mild pressure Mallan is able to manage well, he can think quickly if and when needed but he lacks the ability to make decisions without 'bouncing' his ideas off someone else, he often needs someone else to help him take charge. If Mallan ever considered having a relationship with a girl, you would find he can tend to get quite over protective and while he means well, he would likely drive the poor girl crazy, wanting to be around her and knowing what she was doing. He would know what he was doing but would be unable to stop himself from continuing this spiral of self destructive relationship and .. with the ending of a relationship would come his self doubt and make it harder for him to form that attatchment a relationship needs, afraid he would get abandoned again.
History: Mal wasn't born in the Weyr, although his mother was. Somewhere along the line Mallan's mother decided to leave the Weyr, for reasons unknown to her friends and family. She left one evening when the weather was clear and it was well into the night, taking one of the best runner beasts with her. Not much was known about her after that, maybe she had a lover somewhere, it is all uncertain but what IS certain is that a young child showed up at the weyr one morning. No one recognised the man that dropped him off and he'd kept his voice gruff, leaving one message "take care of the child, he belongs here" When the drudge turned back after picking up the crying child, the man was gone. It was then that the drudge noticed small bundle left behind, picking it up she went to the creche workers, dropping the child there before fetching food from the kitchens. The very young lad grew fast, steadily becoming stronger each day until he hit the age of fourteen (they counted the day he arrived as his birthing day, since no one knew when he was born). It was then his foster mother gave him a note and a picture, telling him "this is meant for you". Mal read the note over and over again, in it was the heartbreaking apologies of a parent who would never see their child grow up, it seemed his mother had been pregnant, whether by someone in the weyr, or a visiting holder or healer or some such, she didnt write that part in for Mallan. However, she became very ill though she showed no signs of it, only the weyr's healer knew and had been sworn to secrecy. As the pregnancy had progressed she knew she wouldn't have long with her new child and had organised for him to be looked after in the hold she was staying at. Below the words for Mallan from his mother, there was another note, one from an unknown writer but it stated that the boy's mother, after writing the letter, she became too weak to write, and had asked for the addition to the letter for her son to be sent to the weyr to be raised as his mother had been, among dragons and dragonmen. Along with orders for him to only be given the letter upon the age he became eligible to stand on the hatching sands.
For a long time Mallan seemed withdrawn and different from his usual cheeky self but a few sevendays later he perked up. However, he refused to stand on the sands, even though he was entitled to do so, he vowed that he didnt need a dragon to prove he was just as good as the other weyrbrats who had been born there. He worked hard at his chores and chose to spend more time in the kitchens, learning how to create dishes for the men and women of high high reaches weyr, he enjoyed blending flavours and creating food that made people smile when they tasted it but he also enjoyed his lessons learning what he could.
When he turned nineteen Mallan made another possibly life changing choice, he'd worked hard for the last five turns, to prove to himself he could be better than he had been expected of in his life before the Weyr. He approached the candidate master and asked to be allowed on the sands at a hatching. So now, he prepares, learning new things, things that lads and girls younger than him, that had been raised at the weyr and had been learning since they were old enough, have known for years about what life as a Candidate means.Which is hard for him, because alot of the time he feels they're judging him, wanting him to fail because they've been at it for longer and he's come in and is learning anew. He relates more to the holders and others from outside the Weyr who are learing at a similar level as himself, but ultimately he feels seperated from his fellow Weyrbrats. He waits the time he can stand and will let fate decide whether he becomes someone better than before, be it in the kitchens, where surely he will go if he ages out, or a Dragonrider.
