January 10, 2017 - Ritz was won from a contest entry!
PostPosted: Sun Jan 22, 2017 6:54 pm

ϟMaritza Galwayϟ

User Image
Nickname: Ritz
Race: Lightning
Gender: Female
Future Class:
Significant Other:
Children:
Physical Description: Taller than average for a girl, average for a male. Androgynous frame; small, near nonexistent bust with small, narrow hips. Constantly covered in dirt or oil; maybe both.

Romantic Status: Single
Partner: N/A

3 Base Traits: Antsy, Sharp, Nocturnal
Personality:

Ritz is an easily agitated girl. She has the patience of a toddler, and prefers to get her work done as quickly possible instead of sitting around on her hands. Because of this she’s almost always working on something; whether it’s a hobby project, something for her lessons or something for her mother. Her pockets are almost always littered with mechanical debris, and more often than not, even while talking with others, she’ll have at least one hand in her pocket fiddling with something.

She has little patience for others, and finds most leisurely activities dull. The only way to get truly feminine, excited squealing from her would be to show the girl an antique, broken down engine that she can devote time to restoring.

That being said Ritz has a keen eye. She’s sharp and too the point, in an almost painfully blunt way. It makes socializing difficult, as she doesn’t understand when others walk away from her. In her world straight forward honesty is the best policy; even if she has to tell someone straight to their face that she would rather drown in oil than listen to one more moment of their nasally prattle. As straightforward as she is, she’s able to look past the frivolities of life and straight to the heart of the problem. Troubleshooting engine repairs comes easy to her, even if the solutions are not always so clear cut. And on the rare occasions she cannot find the problem she will spend hours, even days, in a pensive, crabby mood until it’s found.

Like her mother before her, Martiza does her best work during the odd hours of the night. She’s lived her life by her mother’s schedule so by now it’s only second nature to sleep through the sunniest times of day. Being up in the sunlight can leave her cranky and ill tempered, complaining about the bright lights on her eyes. Under the guidance of the moon and gas lamps, however, the young girl seems to flourish. When the world is asleep and less likely to intrude she does her best work, much to the chagrin of the teachers who would rather the child keep to a ‘normal’ schedule.

ϟHistoryϟ

Maritza was raised with her elder brother, Rivyn, by their single mother in the city of Valmon. Her mother, a member of the sector of Transportation, spent most of their childhood engrossed in her work. Her focus was that of railway maintenance and meant working through the night, often leaving her young children during working hours. The children were never truly alone, however; neighbors and close friends of their mothers would often watch them while she was away, insuring the young ones safety and continued education.

Her mother encouraged the children to push the boundaries of known technology. To evolve further than anything they were being taught in their classes and to aim as high as the clouds themselves. Maritza took that to heart. In the wee hours of the morning, once her mother had returned, she would often keep the woman up for hours asking questions. She wanted to know everything about the railways, about what her mother did, and what her mom thought could make it all better.

As she grew Ritz became a proactive member in the search for stabilized air travel. Her mother had said to dream for the skies; so why not take that as literally as possible? Of course, when she had signed on as an assistant for the maintenance team Ritz never dreamed that they would offer to take her with them across the sea. As her superiors explained to her mother, the girl seemed to have an innate ability to problem solve and while she was still young yet, the mechanics could use the helping hand.

At first her mother was worried; after all, the first voyage hadn’t ended favorably, but Ritz’s determination to go moved her mother. This might even be her ticket into the academy! And if something bad happened, well, no one lives forever anyway, right?

ϟPrentice Solo 1 (Contest Entry)ϟ

In the evening sunlight Ritz pulled a spring free from her pocket, and gave the coiled edges a flick before running the pad of her thumb across the small bit of metal. It was as much a nervous reaction as it was calming. Bodies pressed in against her at all angles, each as different as the last, and all staring at her as if she were on fire. Maybe she was; that would certainly explain the warmth on her skin, despite being so far away from the steaming wreckage of their ship.

And the questions- so many questions! She and her companion tried to answer as many as she could, but honestly, Ritz was overwhelmed and disinterested. She wanted to study this new land, these new people, but from a respectable distance; one where she could talk to them one on one, maybe, and not from a mob.

Frankly, Ritz was exhausted.

Mentally and physically.

The trip across the sea from Belrea had been arduous. The outcome was unknown, and though she tried to stay optimistic, sheer determination only went so far. Just because she told herself they would make it through didn’t necessarily mean they would, which left sheer panic in her heart during their ‘landing’. She stalled for too long during the initial failures and had failed to tell the right people. What good was noticing the signs of a malfunction if she didn’t tell the right person to fix it? Instead, she’d told a bumbling idiot who had assured her he knew what to do when he really didn’t and everything had spiraled downhill from there.

Of course she knew the crash wasn’t entirely her fault. There was no way it could have been; she was maintence, not engineering or design. She maintained engines that were supposed to be already functional, but still, if she’d paid better attention…

That was why they brought her along. Her apprenticeship in the Transportation sector with her mother had shown so much progress that when talk of an air expedition there had been no question as to whether she would go or not.

It was just...she hoped that the trip hadn’t been a complete waste. Many would have blamed her foul mood on the time of day, as Ritz was a natural nocturnal girl, but she was also an anxious one. From what she could see the new earthlings looked so...so primitive. What could they possibly have to offer Belrea that they didn’t already possess? Maybe those with more leanings to cultural exploration would get to the bottom of it, but to Ritz these strange faces were a sad disappointment.

Now, being back in the sky, with nothing but the whirling of engines surrounding her….now THAT was exciting. During that time she had felt more at peace than ever before, but now, surrounded by so many bodies…

...all Ritz wanted to do was go home.

ϟPrentice Solo 2ϟ

Martiza couldn't stand another day in Oba.

After the 'incident' with the little hybrid boy she'd had enough. It had taken her days to find her way back to any sort of civilization, and much longer to convince someone to give her a ride as far away from where she'd come as possible. She was exhausted, hungry and cold; chilled to the bone since all of her supplies were still back in that tiny village.

The village she wouldn't dare set foot in again.

And to make matters worse she'd mistakenly thought it was decent idea to share her story, the story of the little hybrid boy, to her fellow travelers.

Who were still laughing over her misfortune.

There were all crammed into he back of a wagon, rolling over sandy terrain and oh how pleasant it was that she had brought so many a good chuckle-

"-seriously, who tells a kid he could trip and die? What did you expect would happen?"

"-And then he starts screaming, oh man can you imagine her face? I bet you almost cried too, didn't ya, girl?-"

"I said I was sorry!" Martiza snapped. For some reason they just laughed more. "What, should I go back and appologize?"

"Nooooo, Gods no, don't do that. If I was that kid's Pa I'd whoop you good for spookin' my boy like that."

So there really was no way to make amends. Martiza hadn't felt that bad in her life. She tucked her knees up under her chin and huffed, still seeing that kid's freaked out face even when she closed her eyes. If she went back to apologize to him she was just as likely to be turned away as she was to, as the traveler said, be whooped. And even though Martiza was tall for her age, she was still fairly scrawny and young. There was only so much whoopin' she'd be able to handle.

"Best for you to just forget about that place and whatever you left behind. Ya ain't gettin it back; all that's long gone now. In a few years, if ye'r still around and ya see 'im again then you can apologize, but right now...well, ye'r probably some kind of scary goblin to that kid now so it's best not to scare him anymore."

Scary goblin, huh? Martiza closed her eyes and tried to wipe the image from her mind, but he just wouldn't do away. Those pretty green eyes widened in actual fear, over something she'd said, welling up with tears....

She'd never felt so disgusted with herself.

She needed to be more careful about what she said in the future. OR maybe just avoid kids all together. Both sounded like grand ideas in the moment. Hopefully he wouldn't dwell on it for long and maybe his parents would sooth away what worries he had. Surely they could manage that much? They were probably extremely pissed at her, and maybe the traveler was right, maybe they were looking out for her, but all the better reason never to go back to that village.

"Ye've never been around little ones much, have ya?"

Ritz slowly raised her head and opened her eyes, turning to peep at the old man who sat diagonally from her. He was the one who'd done most of the talking, and seemed to be the only one looking to offer her any sort of solace.

"Never. I've seen them, in the streets, but I'm the youngest in my family."

"It doesn't excuse what ya did, but it does explain it. If ya don't know how to talk to 'im, then how can ya? Spend some time around kids'n see what they're like. That way next time ye'r in a situation like that you won't make 'em piss themselves in fright."

Expose herself to...children? The idea was as displeasing as it was terrifying. In order to better train herself she should do it, but...Ritz didn't want to. But if she didn't....well, she didn't want another incident, so she supposed she'd best suck it up and do it.

ϟClass Choice Solo - Blacksmithϟ

Seeing Belrea again after being gone for so long was surreal for Maritza. As her boots carried her off the airship, and onto familiar terrain her mind wandered back to the land she'd left behind. Seeing that open landscape, the tents that the nomads erected for a handful of nights at a time, compared with the soaring visage that was Valmon made her wonder. If the information her kind had collected over the years were to be shared to Tendaji, would their own lands look similar by the time she was dead and gone? Or would they see Belrea as a threat, and prevent continued contact?

So far things had gone well; her own, personal interactions varied in success, but Maritza like to think that, in the end, the trip was well worth her time. She had practiced her future trade while both in the air and on the ground, by helping to craft new parts to make up for those lost in the crash. The locals of Tendaji had called her a 'blacksmith', but Maritza knew what she was; she was a mechanic, blood and steel, same as her mother and the ancestors before them. She was just smart enough to make quick change repairs when necessary, and to think outside of the box when it came to making impossible situations happen, but no where near enough to be admitted into the academy. They were the ones who made the advancements; the new engine models, changes to work environments to make the production processes lean and to keep employees safe...she was just happy to be a part of it.

The moderate climate here suited her better than the chill that seemed to permeate her bones in Sauti. Maybe it was the time of year or her own perpetual state of undress, but Maritza had felt the need to wear several layers just to stay warm. How that skinny waif of a man happened to survive even further north, where the winters never ended, she would never understand. Perhaps it was that school he went to that embedded him with some sort of internalized warming spell? She would have liked to ask more questions, but time hadn't been on her side. Repairs were critical, and the longer they spent in a land that was foreign to them the chances of turning....native increased.

"Ritz! Over here!" Maritza craned her head to look over the growing crowd. Several citizens, both of Valmon and surrounding cities, had come to collect loved ones and to see how the trip had gone. So, it wasn't surprising to the teen to see her own brother in the mix.

Or rather, it wasn't surprising to see him barreling through the crowd, elbowing men, women, and children alike in a mad dash to make it to his little sister. She wasn't sure if that was him screaming her name at this point, or if she had simply gone deaf, and the resulting sounds were white noise.

"I-I'm so happy you're hoooome-" Rivyn wrapped his arms around his sister and squeezed, completely robbing her of the ability to breath properly. Maritza tried to pry herself out of his hold, but his arms were as tight as chains. She couldn't see, with his face pressed against the side of her head, but it certainly felt like he was crying, if the sudden downpour of wetness on her shoulder was anything to go off.

"Rivyn, you're causing a scene-"

"OF COURSE I AM." She scrunched up her nose in distaste when he hiccuped into her hair, and....she really hoped that wasn't snot on her shoulder...."My baby sister just came home in a flying ship, I think I'm entitled to a few moments of hysterics. Oh, I'm so glad you won't be going back-" His arms slacked in relief, and Maritza took her cue to escape. She ducked, slipped out of the circle of his arms and stepped away.

"I am going back, as soon as it's safe to go. The Captain offered me a position on board as an apprentice mechanic, and I accepted." It hadn't been on her list of things to come out of this trip, and honestly, at one point during her stay on Tendaji, Maritza had cursed getting involved at all. But the thrill of being airborne, of being able to keep them all airborne....it was too intoxicating to say no to.

That...seemed to sober Rivyn up. He looked confused and hurt, which wasn't what she'd necessarily wanted out of their first meeting in months. "We'll see what mom says about that in the morning. I just dropped her off at work, so you'll have to wait on that. Come on, let's go home."

As if she can change my mind. Maritza picked up her pack and trailed along behind her brother, more sure than ever about her career path. Her family may not like it, but to be recognized by her peers, to have others on that ship acknowledge her accomplishments even though she was still so young...it would be foolish to turn all of that away to work on locomotives. All of that was in the past; air travel was the future, and she was going to see it through.

And hopefully, when they were travelling again, she could go to Zena to fulfill her promise...

ϟPrentice Growth Soloϟ

(Honesty isn't always the best policy, or so Maritza is beginning to learn. After seeing first hand what blunt force truth could do (such as telling a small child he could have died by tripping and hitting his head on a rock) she's seeing that telling a little white lie now and again, especially if it means giving those you love most the support they so desperately yearn for, is actually better than bullying her way through.

After returning from Tendaji, Maritza discovers that her brother has diverted from the sector of Transportation, and has made his way into Leisure instead. As against the move as she is (since it is uncommon to switch, her family has never made a move like that, etc) she's learning to be more sympathetic to the emotional needs of others, more so those she cares about, to show she actually cares.

Biting back on her opinions sucks, but sometimes it's necessary to be a better, well rounded person.)

From the outside the theater was certainly nothing grand. She had seen Vivali's in the daylight hours, and cringed her way past on multiple occasions. The old structure was covered in a tacky, pale green paint that chipped horrendously on the south side. The large letters, proclaiming the acting companies name, were forged out of metal and painted just as crudely before being plastered to the front. It was beyond atrocious in the daylight sun, but when the sun went down firelight brought out a hidden charm in the building that drew people in.

Maritza cursed as she was jostled forward. The crowd was already starting to thicken, and shuffle forward, sucking in patrons off the street much like a fat child around a plate of cheese. For once she had cleaned herself up, but for what she wasn't sure. Her brother had only asked her, begged her, to come see a show and when she asked if he would meet her there he said he would...but only after. Ritz tried to immediately back out, but he had been insistent; and lately, with all of the awkwardness at home, Maritza was easily swayed to give in just to shut him up.

Something had happened while she was in Tendaji, and neither her mother nor her brother wanted to talk about it. The two spent as little time as they could around one another, and all of their interactions were seemed forced. It was enough that Maritza, as pointless as she found theater, was agreeing to see a show just to get out. She had donned a dress their neighbor owned; some fluffy, ridiculous blue thing and scrubbed the dirt off her skin. The mechanic owned no jewelry, save her leather collar, so that, too had been provided.

If the ushers felt the callouses on her hands as they led her to her seat they didn't comment, nor did they say anything about the straight, brusque way she walked and outpaced them. She was seated near an elderly couple, ones who love for each other was so visible that Maritza tried not to stare directly at it, lest she pick up some sort of disease. Instead, she shifted on the thread bare seat cushion, and looked to the stage. Third row; how much did this seat cost you, Rivyn? Evidently her fop of a brother had other things to come up and that was the reason why she now sat where he should have been. Best not to let something go to waste.

But when the curtain rose, the majority of flames snuffed out and the first actors took to the stage she knew why he wasn't with her.

Rivyn wasn't seated beside her because he was standing before her.

Normally sitting through a play like this would have been tantamount to torture for the teenager, but Maritza's focus was on Rivyn. She sat quiet from her spot, anxious fingers twiddling with a small pair of gears she'd managed to sneak in with her. He was...strangely good. Not perfect, by any means, nor did he have a particularly large role, but she had never seen her brother so...natural. He had always worked alongside their mother, same as Maritza, and hadn't complained, but now she wondered how much he had hidden from her? Had there always been arguments between the two that she didn't know about? Or rather, how much did she actually know, but hadn't paid attention too because she was focused on her own endeavors?

When the performance ended Maritza joined the couple at her side by standing, though she didn't stay to clap; instead, she started to make her way out the door, even as the audience was still cheering and the actors took their bows. It was hard, moving as fast as she was accustomed to in swaths of fabric, but she hustled as far as she could with that dress.

By the time she got outside Maritza was undone. What was he doing?! All of that talent, all of that time training along side their mother- he was throwing it all away?! Maritza clenched her hands into fists and stood off to the side, hoping those now exiting the theater wouldn't see her. They were all laughing, cooing and talking about the performance. Were they aware that one of the actors shouldn't even be on stage? That his family belonged in the sector of Transporation; that their entire ancestral line had been there, and he had left all of that behind? And for what? Ten lines, and a wig?!

There were no technological advancements to be made by acting. It was a complete waste! How was he supposed to make their world better by dancing around on stage, and grinning at everyone who so much as cheered for him? Belrean society placed knowledge on a pedestal; it was of the utmost priority and for Maritza, there was no higher endeavor than seeking it out. But Rivyn was tossing it all away....

"Maritza! There you are, I couldn't find you."
She turned to see her brother jogging towards her, breathless and...beaming? Of course he was happy; when had he ever been cheered for like that?

.....Had he ever been cheered for?

"So, what did you think? I wasn't even supposed to be on stage tonight, I'm still just an apprentice, but the troupe leader said I could because you were coming." There was a hesitancy in his smile; as if he were waiting for the approval of someone, anyone, and dread coiled in her stomach. She wanted to yell at him, to scream to Rivyn about his lack of priorities, and drag him back to the work bench where he belonged.

But even she couldn't deny how natural he had looked up there. Shy, hesitant, as if he weren't used to having the spotlight on him, even for those brief moments...

And that's when it dawned on her. Even though Rivyn was older than her by a few years he had never been held up as highly as she had. Maritza had always had more passion for metalwork than he did, so thus she'd excelled far beyond what Rivyn ever could. And even though every part of her was screaming to tell him exactly what she thought, no matter how much it would tear through him, she couldn't....

This is what their mother had been upset over. She was mad that her son had gone into a different field, and for once in his life, Rivyn had the opportunity to be as passionate about something as they were. Even though she didn't understand it, didn't like it, she couldn't take it away from him.

"You did great." She even managed to smile when she said it, which seemed to take a load of stress off Rivyn's shoulders. It was complete s**t, and you should just come home now before you fail.

"You...really think so?"

NO. "Yeah...I'm sure if you put your all into it you'll go far." Or fail quicker, so you can come back to doing what makes sense. Strangely enough, she both wanted him to fail and also didn't. Maritza didn't like wishing ill will on her kin, but...as much as she was trying to be supportive of him, she also wound have preferred to have him working side by side with her.

And, since she'd only ever told the blunt, honest truth in her life her brother had no reason to doubt her. He didn't see her lies; instead, he teared up a little and hugged her. "Thanks, sis. I love you."

With a sigh, Maritza hugged him in return, "Love you too."
