It had been late autumn, when Delilah decided she wanted to go for a long stroll. There was a brisk chill in the air and all the leaves had long since turned fiery colors and shed from the branches where they'd grown all summer long. There had been rain, which she loved, summer storms were best but autumn rains were still good. So, the leaves we no longer crispy and crunchy when she tread through them, aside from the occasional patch tucked against the base of an enormous tree where they'd been blown and sheltered. Delilah went on and on through the bare wood, soon, much sooner than she knew, there would be snow, but for now there were soggy leaves and bare branches reaching up into the gray skies.

George arrived at the cave she would over-winter in, much sooner than all the rest of them that she would be staying with. She had a lot to prepare and brought in supplies, food and warm bedding, in short trips and longer ones. Pine boughs were piled in the deepest, warmest corner with leaves and grasses. It was good that none of them were blessed by Fire, but of course they would not be. She wasn't. Nor was the other one, but things might not turn out exactly as seen. Someone else's touch would be upon all of them in the coming months and seasons much longer than this one.

"Bright eyes turned skyward, blue and clear, for the last time this year."

...

Delilah's journey took her much further from her usual territory than she'd planned. 'Planned' was giving the decision too much weight. Putting one foot in front of the other for nothing more than 'why not' and not aiming to end up anywhere was all well and good until the sky darkened and the winds began to blow strong and cold. Autumn rains were lovely, when you weren't caught out in them, when they didn't bring sleet and ice, when the sky didn't drop snow until everything was white and crystal-covered, piling thick and dense, so high her leisurely walk became a trudge, perhaps a slog even. It was hell, except hell would, at the very least, be warm.

Though she was not the sort to curse her own bad luck or praise whatever deity watched over that particular realm when her fortunes finally turned she shouted wordless joy when she spotted a cave and hurried her pace to something like a prance, shaking snow off her back paws as she ducked snow laden branches and peered as deep into the cave-mouth as her snow-blinded eyes would allow her.
"Oh, please, oh, thank you, oh, don't be-- ah! ... Um?"

"There you all are, I was expecting you. Welcome home, Pinkmint, I see you've brought everyone with you." George had appeared at the cave mouth, beaming a smile of welcome for her family. Her bright green eyes focused somewhere past where Delilah stood.

Delilah blinked. Glanced from George and looked around, she was still panting softly from her climb, as it had not occurred to her to travel back downhill, rather than up, while seeking shelter. "It's just me, alone, I think I underestimated Winter this year, and..."

"Ah, but you are not the only one, many have and many will continue to... but for now, come inside where it is dry and warm, but quiet. The little ones are sleeping now."

...

Delilah meant to stay only as long as it took her to recover. George was no stranger to her, but Delilah knew no one stranger. The Seer was a little hard to talk to, though Delilah was no deep conversationalist. Before her strength returned another winter storm dumped another load of snow, peering out of the cave-mouth at the transformed landscape, she agreed to stay for a little longer.

Days turned to weeks and when the boxes arrived with winter settling in for good, Delilah knew she would be staying much longer than she originally planned.

"Wooohooo!"

Darien was having the time of his relatively short life, sledding down the snowy hillside on his furry bum and leaping into the snowdrifts. There were already many Dari shaped holes in the drift he was currently launching himself towards, as well as a well worn path down the hill and back up again to the top.

It was one of the rare sunny days, mid-winter, cold and clear, and while this wasn't the first time he'd ventured out of the cave to play in the snow, it was definitely one of the best so far.

On reaching the end of the slope, he kicked with his back legs and was air-borne for a few brief moments before splatting into the deep drifts of snow, gasping and giggling, laying on his back and looking up at the blue gray sky, he knew he would never fly like his pair of sisters would, but somehow he couldn't bring himself to mind.

Doyle watched her brother slide down the hill, and wiggled her little rump as she took a running start to slide down the same path, she squealed as her wings popped open a little bit as she tried to kick off as she glided slightly in a weird angle before crashing into a snow bank.

Snorting, and shaking snow off of her head as it popped up, a grin spread across her face as her eyes danced. "That is amazzzzzzzzzzzzzing!" she said as she tried to climb out of the Doyle sized hole, but found she wasnt tall enough. "Heelp Darien!"

"Again? Okay, okay. Keep your swirls on..."

Darien shifted and rolled over, dumping more snow onto himself while he maneuvered around in his current hole. He started to dig in the direction Doyle's voice came from, breaching the wall of snow between his hole and hers. Because she could glide, she consistently landed in much deeper snow than he did, and he was happy to help free her and guide her back out of the drift so they could make their way to the top of the hill once more.

They'd done this so many times, the drift was riddled with tunnels, some of which would be collapsed when they landed during the next round, but they could just dig them out again.

There was a long yawn as JakJak padded out sleepily into the mid-winter morning. Blinking large eyes she looked around. Not spotting two of her siblings, her ear flicked. What? She looked one way. Then another. Where did those two? OH CRAP!!! She leaped to her four little paws as she jumped around to look for them. Uh...oh....would her Mommy's be mad that she lost them? They most likely would. She heard her siblings not too far away and ran out. Kicking up snow as she went. Calling out ahead of her.

"DARI!!!! DOLLY!!! THERE ARE BIGGER THINGS THAT'LL EAT US!!!" she skidded to a stop and then her tone changed. "What!?! You're having fun without me!!!"

Darien's ears flattened against his skull when he heard JakJak's voice shouting across the snow, she was scolding again, and then, right on cue... He grinned and snickered, popping up from a snowbank.

"There's nothin' gonna eat us Jaky! Unless you're talkin' 'bout th'snow, and snow don't have teeth!" He called back to her across the icy landscape, there were tracks and paths and tunnels all over. Places where they'd carved sliding paths and places to hide during their games. It had snowed a few times since they'd all fallen out of their boxes weeks ago, every time it did, it just gave them a new chance to explore and sculpt their yard.

He complained about most things and he always seemed to promise things that he couldn't own or live up to.He watched his siblings play in the snow, and he slowly walked to the edge of the den and sat. His tail flicking a few and when a gust of wind came in, he curled his fluff tail around himself and puffed up a bit.

"Oh a hate this. All of this. This is a lot of nope, nope."

He watched them play and lifted one ear when someone was pleaing for help. The other speaking about how something like Snow couldn't eat them.

"I bet you can sink in snow, and never come out." He said, a-matter-of-factly. Not helping anyone else or even playing. Too cold.
