There wasn’t supposed to be anything special going on in the household today. At least, there hadn’t been anything planned -- no guests, no meetings, none of that. It was supposed to be a quiet day, the kind of day when the only thing exciting was the contents of a book. Bahari, of course, was a big fan of books… but there was only so much time a child (even a somewhat bookish child) could spend cooped up in the library. Eventually he climbed down to the manor’s ground floor, headed for the kitchen, and…
Stopped short, hearing a strange sound.
It was clearly an animal sort of sound, at it was coming from the stables. This was immediately intriguing. Although Buthos kept the stables maintained for guests and messengers, there were no large animals in the household. So whatever this was, it must belong to a visitor. It was not particularly unusual for folks to show up unannounced, anyway. Sometimes they had business with Buthos, or even with the lady Myranda (although the sorts of people she dealt with rarely came with beasts). Beos, Bothos’ oldest son, sometimes had friends visiting… and then there was Sarii’s constant stream of suitors.
Anyhow, Bahari didn’t much care about the details of the visit. He did, however, want to check out the beast. So he slipped quietly into the stable, climbing onto a chair to get a good look into the stall, and saw… a snaptrotter! How cool was that! It had sharp teeth and impressive fins, and it was Bahari’s first time seeing one quite this close up. He tried to remember what it was that snaptrotters ate, and if there was any of that in the pantry he could feed it.

Abie was in this odd estate on behalf of his Mentor. The elder was here to assist with the current training of a guard beast for the estate itself. The youth wasn't exactly bored at the start of it all, but he had been excused to tend to the nervous Laqui who had started to chitter. Not a good sound from a whelp, Abie knew. So he was guided to the stables to let Laqui calm down. He led the other into a pen as he sat down near him. He was blocked from view as he stroked Laqui's side to keep him calm. Hearing small feet he leaned around Laqui's head to see a small...pale...matorian?!? Wait. There were stones. Ah...a hybrid. He tilted his head as he thought of what the little one could be mixed with. Given that this was a Oban nobel household. He looked around. Was the child from a servant. He looked at the white hair and it clicked. Shifter. They had white hair. He chuckled a bit as he watched the little one look at Laqui. Shifting to stand he cleared his throat. "His name's Laqui." he introduced before stroking Laqui under a head fin. He glanced to the child. "I'm Abie. He's handler." he introduced himself with a small half bow. "I'm visiting the estate with my Mentor." he went on to explain in case the child got spooked.

SwordOfTheDarkOnes whoop sorry missed putting this back in my queue. anyway, Bahari's my next piority bae and this rp is the only thing I need to grow him... and it's the only one I have going 'cause i'm lazy. So I'll be replying as often as possible. B) “Oh!” Bahari’s eyes widened when he noticed the Matorian beside the beast. He was very impressive-looking with long blue hair and a big tattoo across his chest. He had broad shoulders and lots of muscles. Bahari climbed up the fence of the pen so that he could sit on the top rung, looking quite well-used to scrambling over things in this manner.
“Hi Laqui. Hi Abie. I’m Bahari. I live here.”
He kicked his feet in the air and studied the animal in the pen. He looked happier now that it’s owner was was in there with him, scratching under his fin. His toothy muzzle almost looked like a smile. How cool would it be to have a pet like that? He could terrify Sarii and Lady Myranda with that! Along with all the other servants and guards who were mean to him, no doubt.
“Can I touch him too? I will be very careful. I only saw a snaptrotter once before, and it was in a cage at the market. Uncle Buthos wouldn’t let me go look at it, he said it was probably mad from being locked up like that and it would eat me because I was small.”

Abie chuckled as he held out a hand. "Come here then, Bahari." the child lived here so that was something which meant a lot. He looked really well looked after. Was he a prized trophy? The thought made Abie shiver a little, but he did kneel down so that he was on equal level with the other. "Well, generally not a lot of beasts like being in cages unless they were made to fear others. Even then, those sorts usually have large teeth they can use once fear turns to anger." he said as he gently pulled Laqui to lay down. The large beast lays on his side. Abie scratched under his beast's chin. "Here, gentle strokes...at the base of the head fins...there's a soft spot. It won't hurt him but gentle strokes there and you'll hear him purr."

“Ok!” Bahari grinned when he was invited down from the railing, twisting around and putting his feet on the lower bar before jumping all the way down onto the ground. The Matorian man was kneeling now, and the snaptrotter standing just as high beside him.
“Yup.” He nodded when Abie explained that animals were unhappy in cages. “It looked very mad. I thought maybe it should have some toys or snacks or something, you know? It seems so boring just to sit in a cage all day. Laqui looks lots happier than the other snaptrotter.”
He watched then as the man got the animal to lie on it’s side (that was a neat trick!) and carefully followed the instructions given for stroking him in the soft spot at the base of his fins. It really did feel soft there -- and warm. The big animal seemed to like it, and Bahari giggled when he heard him purring. It was quiet at first (he could feel it more than he could hear it), but once he got used to listening it was hard to miss.
“He’s like a big perzi!”

Abie chuckled. This right here was apart of the reason why he enjoyed his chosen profession. Showing a child the joys of a different side of life. He sat down then, crossing he legs he chuckled as Laqui gently nudged the child to sit on Abie's lap. Abie didn't make any move to block the child or impose his will in any way. He watched Laqui. "You have a gentle soul, beasts can sense that..."

A nudge from the snaptrotter’s muzzle sent him back into Abie’s lap. He thought the Matorian might not be comfortable with that -- Lady Myranda was always warning him about how one must be careful about others’ personal space, and all that -- so he wriggled down to sit on the ground beside him instead. It was soft here, with fresh straw laid out for the animals.
“Really?” He looked up when Abie told him that beasts could sense his gentleness. “That’s good! I like them, so I don’t want them to be afraid of me. But what about war-beasts, you know, fierce ones like the big janarim that warriors ride. Do you think they like people with fierce souls too?”

Abie chuckled. "I think so...but sometimes the most fiercest of beasts require a gentle master." he said as he reached out to stroke Laqui gently. He thought about it. "If your Uncle is alright with it, perhaps my Mentor could breed a nice Janarim for you..." It would be a good protector for the child if he so wanted one.

Bahari’s eyes lit up immediately when Abie mentioned getting his own Janarim. It seemed like a considerable stretch (especially if Lady Myranda had her say in it), but… he could already imagine how amazing it would be, having his own giant Janarim to take care of.
“Oh, that would be the coolest! I think they’re so neat! Do you really think Uncle Buthos would be ok with that? I mean, it wouldn’t go about and wreck everything, would it? I guess it wouldn’t if you train it right, but… I don’t know that much about training. Is it hard to do? You are probably good at it because your pet is nice.”
He stroked Laqui again, watching the way the animal breathed.
“Where did you get Laqui? Did you catch him in the wild?”

Stereochrome >> If you want different colors lemme know. The youth couldn't help the soft hum after he let out another chuckle. He shifted to rest his chin in his hand as he leaned on one bent knee. He thought over the upcoming litters that his Mentor was preparing for. If the other was so inclined, he could offer the pup as a guard for the child. Being a rare hybrid the child was certainly going to be under some amount of threat. He glanced to the other with a smile. "If you get a pup, they'll learn that your family. They'll listen to you." He shifted his head to lay it in the hand now focusing entirely on the child. "I was actually given Laqui, my Mentor...raised Laqui's parents. I assume he caught them in the wild as his Dad seems plenty wild in his personality." He blinked as Laqui laid his head closer to the child.

SwordOfTheDarkOnes aww no, he's so cute. <3 o wo The hybrid broke out into giggles when Abie explained that he could get a janarim as a pup. Of course, this made a lot of sense -- but Bahari hadn’t even considered the idea. Now that he had thought of it, though, it seemed like the coolest thing ever.
“A baby janarim! That would be so fun. I’ve never seen a little one. We could play together, and then I would teach them not to wreck things and to listen to me. And it would be small, like me, so it wouldn’t be so hard to control, right? Because they get real big when they grow up. I’ve seen some real big ones before. As tall as this roof!”
He pointed at the ceiling, then listened as Abie told him where Laqui had come from. Although he’d read lots of books about animals, this was the first time he had heard about breeding and animal-rearing in such practical terms. What a cool job that was!
“Did you get him when he was little, then?”

The youth chuckled. "Yup, got him and his siblings when they were just weeks old." he rubbed the side head fins of the beast affectionately. "Its good to get a beast young that way they bond with you as family, though I will caution you to keep a sort of dominance if they get a little out of hand." To prove his point. Abie paused in his rubbing, tapping Laqui's fin twice. The beast instantly laid down belly up. Abie smiled as he rubbed the beasts belly. "See...?"

Yet another giggle bubbled up from the youngling as Abie told him that he had gotten Laqui as a little baby.
"How small was he? Was he this big? Or this big? Or this?" Each size category was illustrated by the hybrid moving his hands different distances away from each other. The smallest of his options was no bigger than a mouse, while the biggest was... well, about as far out as he could stretch his arms. "Could you put him in your pocket? Could you put him on your head?"
Putting a snaptrotter -- even a baby one -- on your head was probably something only a child could appreciate. But Bahari was genuinely curious about this, having never seen a creature grow up like that. Of course, he hadn't really been around long enough to see anything grow all that much, period.
"How do you keep a... a dominance when an animal is bigger than you? Couldn't they just gobble you up if they get mad? Do you give them treats so they listen to you?"

Abie chuckled. "Yup. Through treats and training you..." he paused to think on it. "...condition. Its a term most animal handlers use. Conditioning a beast takes practice...and patience. Usually the end goal is to have a loyal, friendly beast...one who you know you can trust." he explained shifting to offer his hands to lift up the youngling. "Wanna sit on his stomach? He won't hurt you...I trained him really good." The youth knew Laqui would allow small things on his stomach provided that Abie stay near. A youngling of this size wouldn't be too harsh on him. Plus...all the other younglings were Oban...this one was his ilk. Laqui most likely liked the kid based on that...maybe...Abie hoped.

Bahari giggled and wriggled a little as he was lifted onto Laqui's stomach. The beast lifted his head a bit to study him -- maybe out of caution, or just curiosity. After a moment the snaptrotter relaxed and let his head fall back once more. Bahari followed the motion, lying down to put his ear to the animal's chest.
"I can hear his heart!" He giggled again, putting a hand over the part where he heard a clear thu-thump, thu-thump beat. "And he's warm, too."
Besides being warm, Laqui's belly was smooth and pleasant to the touch. It seemed quite muscular, too... but then again, that was true for the rest of the beast just as well. "I guess a belly like this is good for swimming in oceans. I mean, I've never seen any oceans but I saw some pictures in my books. I think I'll go see some when we're older. Do you take Laqui to go swimming?"
