It was a scary yet exciting time for Perenna. She was ready to start high school at Meadow View! Her parents had bought her the school uniform as well as a bunch of supplies. Part of the summer was spent organizing what she'd need and how much, but Perenna couldn't help but feel... Inadequate. What if she wasn't smart enough? What if no one liked her? Her parents had tried to comfort her but to no avail.
The school had sent her parents informational brochures of what was offered at the school, including clubs. They were excited to find out that there was a nature club and it would be holding a nature walk right before school started, for both returning and new students. Perenna was somewhat forced to sign up for it, but she didn't mind. At least she'd be around something she knew well.
Perenna had gotten up early that morning and packed her backpack. It had her bird book as well as a digital camera her parents had bought her. It wasn't anything fancy, but had decent zoom and she could see the birds she took pictures of. There wasn't too many people when she got there, but at least it would make her less nervous.
She approached an older looking student with cream-colored, wavy hair. "Excuse me," she said quietly. "Where do I check in for the nature walk?"

Alphonse was happy that the school had allowed him to help with the nature walk. It had always been a favorite event of his and he loved that he could share his passion with the newer students. He had arrived early to help with the set-up and was assigned one of the smaller groups for the walk. He wondered who would be in his group. There were so many new and transferring students this year. "The sign-up is right this way." Alphonse pointed as the younger student quietly asked. He smiled in a friendly manner as he walked to the table with the team lists and check-in forms. "What's your name? I can tell you what group you will be in for the nature walk."✪

"Thank you," she told the older student. Perenna followed him silently to the table. She was really excited to see everything, but was quite nervous about meeting new people. Overall, Perenna just enjoyed the company of birds to people. Sad, but true.
She looked down at the table to see all the lists of people. Hopefully, someone that was as enthusiastic about birds shared the same list as her. "Perenna. Perenna Lexington. I'll be starting school here in the fall so..."
Part of her questioned if she was even on a list? Was her parents mistaken when they thought she was welcome to this? Perenna panicked and rummaged through her bag. "I think my parents packed me the permission slip or something..."
Perenna pulled out her book, binoculars, and some snacks before she came out with the paperwork. "Does this help," she asked, handing him the paper.

Alphonse looked through the list for her name. There it was... ... it looked like she was one of the new students and was assigned to his group! "You are on my team for the walk." He smiled as he watched the girl rummage frantically through her bag. At least, he wasn't the only one who was nervous. Albeit for different reasons. It was the first time he was given responsibility for a team as a graduating senior. It was her first time here at all. "It looks like your permission slip is filled out too." He leaned down and handed her the paper back with a reassuring grin. "You'll be fine. Promise."✪

Perenna let out a sigh of relief. Meeting new people wasn't easy for her, and she was glad to have already met one person she'd be spending part of the day with. She blushed with nervousness as she spoke. "H-how many others will be in our group?"
She tried to peer at the list, but couldn't tell which was what. "Do you know what we'll be seeing today?" Perenna thought back to her bird book and pulled it out. "Are there rare birds here?" She flipped through the pages and showed them to her group leader. "I marked down a bunch of birds depending on what day and time I saw them and where."
Her excitement was spilling over and she paused, realizing she never got his name. "Uhm... I'm sorry." Perenna paused before speaking again. "I never caught your name."

"Luckily, birds are my specialty!" He blushed as he scratched his head and laughed. How fortunate that he would have someone in his group what enjoyed birds as much as he did! The older boy looked at Perenna's book and pointed out which birds he hoped they would see. Nothing too rare, but he knew of a few uncommon species if you knew just where to look. "My name is Alphonse, by the way."✪

"It's very nice to meet you, Alphonse." She flipped through her book again until she landed on a page with a picture of her bird, Beau. "Do you have a favorite species of bird?"
"I don't have a favorite species, but I do have my favorite bird!" Perenna held up the book against her chest and showed off her cinnamon pearl colored cockatiel. "His name is Beau and is the best bird. Do you have a favorite bird, if not species?"
Perenna knew there was a bunch of birds that people could follow online, but none of them can beat out hers. She just wasn't much for sharing him with the world.

"I couldn't possibly pick a favorite species." Alphonse really did like them all. He was happy the new student had something she was passionate about too. He looked at the picture of her little cinnamon pearl. She must like him very much to have a picture on hand. "Well, I do have a white homing pigeon." He nodded recalling the aviary he had built on the roof of the apartment. "His name is Fawkes."✪

Perenna let out a laugh. "I can understand that. I'm just horribly biased towards Beau." Her parents had surprised her a few years back and she's loved him ever since.
"A homing pigeon? Fawkes sounds amazing." Perenna was filled with questions. "How old is he? Did you train him? How far can he go? Do you have him deliver secret messages?"
She wanted to continue, but realized she may be over-excited and overwhelming. "I'm sorry," she said barely audible. "I just don't usually meet people that love birds..."

"He can get back to his roost as far out as Destiny Tower." He fondly recalled training him every week or two going farther and farther out for each release. "He can get distracted by other birds so I haven't tried too much further into the city."He nodded and smiled at her as she apologized for her enthusiasm. "I have had him since I was a bit younger than you. He's starting to not learn new routes as well now that he is getting older. I love talking about him. I wish everyone could see him fly."Alphonse's eyes got dreamy for a moment as he imagined releasing him from the top of Destiny Tower. ✪

She really couldn't help but laugh when Alphonse mentioned Fawkes getting distracted. It all just sounded amazing. Maybe she could convince her parents to get her another bird... Beau was very social after all, and she didn't think he'd mind.
"He sounds amazing," Perenna proclaimed. "I'm glad he can make it safely home! I'm not sure if Beau is that smart, but I'm not brave enough to risk it."
Perenna looked around as more people started to gather around. "Do you have the rest of your- I mean our group together? Do you know when we're going to start?"

A small group had started to gather as the two talked about their pet birds. "I think everyone is just about here." Alphonse checked each name off the list. He placed a final mark next to Perenna's name. "We are going to start now." He nodded and smiled as he tried to shield his eyes from the glare of the sun with his hand. "It was nice hearing about your bird, Perenna. I am going to lead the group starting in that clearing up ahead. Let me know if you have any questions, 'kay?"✪

Perenna had been so absorbed in their conversation that she hadn't noticed that there was a crowd going around them. It was nice to see that many people interested in the nature walk, but the amount of people made her a bit nervous as well.
She watched as Alphonse checked off her name and she nodded in agreement. "It was wonderful learning about you and Fawkes. Thank you for being our group leader!"
"And for sure!" Perenna knew she'd probably have loads of questions about the foliage, but would probably be distracted by the birds. She looked at the others that seemed to be in their group and there was a bit of excitement, but fear as well.
Hopefully, she'd be able to have some more friends before the start of the school year.Meighei (( I think this is the last post for me! Maybe one more for Alphonse? Thank you for RPing with me <333 ))
