Running - This is a hobby Derek initially picked up from competing with his father for who will finish laps around park areas first as a kid. After his parents divorced and he moved away from Desinty City with his mother, he continued his habit of going on runs after school and would find such times to be opportunities to alternatingly and if not always leisurely, at least a little less tensely either think in depth or not think about experiences in his life, such as his mother's fatal car accident before he moved back to Destiny City and his father's sudden death not long after that's been linked to the terrorism in Destiny City.
Inline Skating - Derek considers inline skating not just a fun sport but also an effectively quick mode of commuting. Since long before moving away and back to Destiny City, he had started and has gotten years of practice in at honing his speed and tricks, definitely including while getting himself to school in the morning.

Virtues:

Collected -- Whether in relaxed or strained circumstances, Derek is one not to be easily distracted from his train of thoughts and actions geared toward any decided goal he has set his mind on.
Open-minded -- Derek is not adverse to any existence of differences in opinions and beliefs that he witnesses or encounters. And rather, it is not uncommon for him to civilly inquire about and listen to descriptions and explanations he is presented with about perspectives.

Flaws:

Competitive -- Derek is inclined to be an eye for an eye kind of guy and rise to challenges that may either suffice at being of interest to or provoking him. And with regards to possibly winning or losing, Derek prefers to win and does not have a reputation for being graceful about accepting any loss. Moreover, with the circumstances also factoring in, there is a notable likelihood given his track record of part-taking in not always sportsman-like events characteristically that he can come across as scornful to various extents at times if the satisfaction of winning escapes him.
Argumentative -- If he happens upon new or complex concepts he does not fully understand, chances are questions and considerations from Derek can be expected. And the amount and heft of queries and feedback he can dish out can certainly be capable of reaching levels deemed of very irritating or troublesome-to-deal-with extents.
