Casimir Stark had been in Ashdown for an impressive 28 minutes. He'd arrived stateside a mere 24 hours ago, finally bidding farewell to his life as a Marine Raider for the last time. And here he was.

He should've gone to Rylan's house first. Rested. Put all his stuff down. Everything he owned was packed into a rucksack slung onto his back and a duffel hoisted onto one shoulder. But it was early. He'd managed tot alk his way onto an earlier flight, which had landed him in Boston and then Ashdown in the early afternoon, and now he was strolling through a park - Waite State Forest, he'd learned, looking for a boat club he'd vaguely read about.

It had been a few years since he'd been on the water with a crew, and he'd be lying if he said he didn't miss it. And Boston, well. Boston was cold, but it was also a solid place to row.

He's just wandering around, avoiding bikers, being a tourist

On a gently-wooded trail with glimpses of water through some of the distant branches he met a fellow pedestrian: a brunette with a supremely forgettable face, her hair in a messy topknot and heavy gauges in her ears, walking with one hand in her pocket and the other dangling a pair of ancient sandals. She was walking barefoot in the grass alongside the path, equipped with a light messenger bag and nothing else.

The chance encounter was there and gone--she smiled at him with an awkward little shoe-encumbered wave as they passed one another, and then perhaps thirty seconds later the slap-slap of bare feet on the trail approached him as she doubled back.

He was carrying a rucksack and that automatically made him interesting, and she was still stung by her failure to get anything useable, let alone a photo, out of the big-eared a*****e with the backpack several weeks back.

"I'm so sorry," she said, breaking the silence. "Can I ask you something? Or a few somethings," she added.

He'd spent about ten minutes weaving around bikers and other pedestrians, with no real interaction with any of them, until he came across the girl with the messy topknot and the shoes hooked in one hand. Cas acknowledged the little wave with a polite nod and a small smile of his own as she passed, but didn't pay her much attention until he heard the patter of her bare feet against the ground turn around and head back his way. He paused at her words and swiveled his upper body to face her.

"Of course," he said, curious expression cracking into a grin designed to say yes, I'm friendly as he lowered his duffel bag to the ground and extended his hand. "Cas. Stark."

She dropped her shoes and shoved her toes into them to extend a hand for a handshake that left something to be desired. She did not seem like the sort of person who often had an occasion to shake hands.

"Alacoque Kelly," she said promptly, if a bit flustered, as though she were also a person unaccustomed to formal introductions.

The grin helped, a little, although it wasn't returned. She had a serious sort of face, her oddly-shaped mouth set in a permanent expression of slightly sarcastic disapproval, whether she wanted it to be or not.

"I, uhm--" An awkward pause. When the words tumbled out, they sounded very much as though they'd been rehearsed and recited over and over. In truth the awkward pause was because this was where she normally said my name is Alacoque Kelly, and-- and she'd just realized she couldn't, thus totally short-circuiting the already-shaky script. "I have a--a blog, a sort of photojournalism project. I catalog Ashdown residents, and if you have a minute to spare I'd love it if you could let me snap a picture and talk to you a little bit about yourself." The words were coming smoothly now. "If you're not comfortable with having your photo taken I'm more than happy to just ask you a few questions instead." Definitely rehearsed.

He watched with almost uncharacteristic patience as she stumbled over her words, and allowed himself a quiet smirk. The fact that she was doing something that - he supposed - mattered to her was enough of a reason for him to take some time out of his day. That, and the fact that he had nowhere else to go for a few hours.

"Pleasure to meet you, Alacoque Kelly," he said, resisting the urge to say something a little more snarky like bless you or I'm sorry. Somehow, Alacoque Kelly didn't seem like the type who would appreciate that sort of sass - and she'd probably heard those jokes before. Her name was anything but common.

"This photojournalistic blog is the kind of thing people have been trying to keep me off for about ten years," he said, smirk widening into a smile. Right now, that fact alone was enough to make him think this was a great idea. "But who is there to stop me now? Ask away."

"Oh, good!" She reached into the patchwork bag to procure a notepad with a pen in the binding, and then her phone, thumbing across it before adding: "I'll record you if you don't mind. It makes it easier to transcribe."

The phone, now recording, was safely tucked into an outside pocket with the mic facing outwards, and she whipped open the notebook with a distinctly journalistic flair.

"What did you mean when you said people wanted to keep you off photojournalism projects?" she asked promptly. And then: "It's helpful if you use complete sentences so I don't have to stuff a bunch of brackets in. I don't think anyone's ever answered that way before."

"Go ahead," Cas nodded when she pulled out the phone. "And ah, well. Started in college. I was rowing for U-Dub, and athletics always wanted to make sure we didn't say stupid things to the media - not so much in that they were worried we'd say bad things about the school, more that they were worried we'd come across sounding like dumbasses. Which, they probably weren't entirely wrong."

The team had figured out rather quickly that Cas in particular was not prone to filtering his words or, necessarily, thinking hard before he spoke. Which made him doubly concerning for the athletics department.

"And after that, with the Marines, I assume it was a similar deal. It wasn't explicitly laid out, I don't think, but you got the same idea."

"Are you still in the Marines?" she prompted. And then: "Sorry--to be entirely honest I, uh. Have no idea how the armed forces work."

This seemed very likely, especially coming from a blogger with gauges who referred to what she was doing as "photojournalism."

"Not anymore," he said with a shake of his head. "First day in Ashdown as a civilian again, I guess."

The word sounded so strange on his tongue, felt almost heavy in the way it sounded from his lips. Part of him felt completely unprepared for a new way of life, but then... there was never a good time for major transitions like this.

"Oh, well. There are five branches in the military," he said. "Marines, Navy, Army, Air Force, Coast Guard. They all are responsible for a different area of combat. Marines, in particular, we do a lot of amphibious operations, which means we do a lot of work capturing beach heads which then allows for attacks from any direction."

sorry i am tag failure and didn't even realize you'd tagged

Cokie, who knew all this, realized with chagrin that she perhaps ought to have been more specific when she said she knew nothing about the military. She latched onto the word civilian, which answered the question she'd meant to ask anyway.

"I didn't know if it was--how long you stayed around in it, I guess? Like, how you return to civilian life, or whatever. Welcome back to it, by the way. And to Ashdown. How long did you do it? Did you do any deployments?"

"Oh," Cas answered with a grin that crinkled the edges of his eyes. "Six years. I started out Force Recon and then moved to special forces. I was in a lot of different places across Africa and the Middle East, most of which I'm probably not supposed to get into much detail with."

But it was clear from the look on his face - the way his gray eyes seemed to sharpen, the wild grin that made him look almost too eager - that he'd loved it. Still did, probably. But he was here and that was what mattered.

"As far as getting out, it's as simple as fulfilling your contract. But if you're asking about the actual transition back into civilian life, I couldn't say just yet." The whole thing was surreal still. "I'm pretty confident I'll be alright. Change has always been a big part of my life. I think I've learned to deal with it."
