Finally; the bell rang for lunch time. It was more than just about the food. For most high school students, lunch was the time to be social. Before school, most people were busy preparing for class or struggling to get there on time and after school it seemed most guys just wanted to go to their dorms to sleep. Lunch at Hillworth was always pretty lively, however. Take a bunch of rowdy boys and put them together during feeding time without the structure of a classroom and...well, it reminded Kit of wild animals fighting for food, territory, and dominance.
Yes, Hillworth was probably meant to 'correct' delinquent behavior and make the attending boys into men worthy of contributing to society. But it was hard to completely suppress natural instincts. The guys who went to this school generally enjoyed picking fights. That was often one of the main 'bad behaviors' they were sent there for in the first place and it was an outlet for feelings since, for males, other outlets were generally looked down upon among their gender.
Kit found the whole thing fascinating. He wasn't one to run from a fight himself and he would have been lying if he'd said he'd never instigated a few of his own. However, he wasn't usually one to throw punches. Take them, certainly, but not hit back. Rumor was he liked it, which creeped out a lot of other guys so bad that they didn't even bother going near him anymore. If he tried to provoke them, often they would just ignore him and act like he didn't exist. So, for entertainment, Kit was left to watch and (sometimes) draw fights that others had instead. Glancing about the room, he wondered what action might have been taking place today if any. Even if there wasn't, the guys at Hillworth were never too boring to observe.
