It was around mid-morning when the black-haired Hillworth boy strolled into the coffee shop wondering if there was anything else to drink there besides coffee. Besides the beverages, there was a good atmosphere for doing things like studying or drawing so he thought it would be a good place to hang out for a little while. When he went to stand in line, however, someone caught his eye.

A young lady at first glance appeared to have been studying, but upon closer inspection, one would see that she had a textbook on the table, a notebook in one hand, and a DS in the other. There was also what looked like an extra large order of black coffee taking up a corner of what table space was left.

Kit's grin slowly broadened and he passed the line for coffee to approach the woman instead. "What on Earth are you trying to do?" he had to ask, his smile and amusement audible in his tone as he peered over her work-space. "Trying to break some multi-tasking record?"

Amaris took a deep drag of her coffee, a pen stuffed in her hair haphazardly, and placed it back down with the precision and finality of a man closing his own coffin lid. Her notebook was filled with almost-gibberish, diagrams of molecules and hasty sketches of animals, and the textbook was no better: bookmarked with dogeared pages and -- well. You got the idea from one look of it.

When Kit came over, she heaved a sigh of relief, stretching out in her chair and absentmindedly twirling a stylus. "No, I'm like -- studying for finals, kind of? But the Streetpass rates are sweet as hell this time of day, people all heading around - I've got to keep checking." Amaris waved one hand in the air aimlessly. "Thank god you came along to actually ask, yanno? This pretty much all looks like gibberish at this point. Blah blah double bonds, blah blah cycles, blah blah kill me."

"Oh, 'studying' is it?" he chuckled. "Don't think I've heard the term 'sweet as hell' used before, but since I'm not really familiar with what streetpass rates are, I'll have to take your word for it." Without bothering to ask for permission, he sat himself down in the seat across from her grinning broader than ever.

"Riiiight, so you're at that point in your study session. Well before you decide to die, allow me to provide an intermission. Name's Kit," the young man said, offering a hand to shake. "And you are?"

"Oh my god," Amaris gasped, cartoonishly distraught. "Is this what our youth are coming to? No knowledge of Streetpass? We've gotta pack it in, folks! This game's over, restart, try again, there's no hope at this point!" She paused to take another long drag of her coffee, staring at the cup like it would reveal the secrets of the universe. ...or the secrets of a passing grade.

"Amaris-call-me-Ammy. Or, y'know, whatever you're good with?" She took Kit's extended hand, shaking it with a vigorous grip. "Pro tip: never go to college. It's awful. I think I'm literally dying."

Kit laughed lightly. "Nah, I'm just not much of a gamer, I guess. I prefer to immerse myself in the world around me rather than cut myself off from it for a virtual one." He nodded with a smile. "Nice to meet you, Ammy. Nice grip, too. Shame about that tip; I think it might be too late for me. Already enrolled to attend after graduating from high school at the end of this semester. Thanks for trying to warn me, though."

"Heh, what's so much worse about college than high school, anyway? Other than having to pay for it, of course, but I think tuition fees cause much slower deaths than the one you seem to currently be experiencing."

"Okay, so -" and her hands kept moving, abstractly gesturing - "tuition is awful, yeah, but there's like fifty times more responsibility in every class and I am just not cut out for that, right? Write a ten page essay, declare your major, all that shiznit: honestly, the whole 'you decide if you show up to class' is the big menacing point, but like...I was a pretty generic honors kid, and now literally every single one of us is the AP kid, you know the one; the one that's got like no time to breathe because you need those grades, son."

Amaris paused for a second to catch her breath. "Where're you graduatin' from? Sorry if that's rude, but I'm curious -- I was a Meadowview girl myself, which probably should have warned me I was about to be the stereotypical college student. DCU, I assume? And major?"

Kit grimaced sympathetically as Amaris spoke of the woes of being a college student. "Ugh, sounds like a real pain in the a**. Yeah, I get what you mean. And it sounds kind of late in the game to back out, especially with finals going on now, huh?" He shook his head. "No wonder people seek refuge in virtual worlds."

Chuckling at her apology, Kit waved it off. "Please. I just started talking to you as a total stranger and then sat myself down here and you think you're being rude? Anyway, I'm an open book; got nothing to hide." He paused to gesture down at his uniform. "Hillworth boy. As for major, I still have no clue. I was actually thinking of going to that SHP place I'd heard about before moving over to DCU, but I don't know if it'd be worth the trouble. You know anything about Soveriegn Heights?"

"I feel less bad about the essays I'm not writing if I can get my Streetpass count up by thirty in half an hour." Amaris said it with the utmost of gravity, as if decreed by a royal lord and master. "I can't drop out, yanno? My parents are paying for it, and they're fed up enough with me not declaring a major, so my internship keeps them off my back but god knows how long." She proceeded to chug the rest of her coffee, at that point, closing the DS and staring at the textbook like it would suddenly translate itself into the Cliff Notes version.

"Sovereign Heights? Never considered it, couldn't tell you -- my academic career is like, fifty percent dictated by my immediate family, and they never even thought about it. I mean, I'm sure it's good or whatever?? But I've never been there."

"Ahh...parents," he acknowledged somberly. "That's rough. How much longer until you can graduate? Can't just pick a major you can finish fast with your current credits? I hear most people these days end up getting jobs completely different from their majors anyway, so I wouldn't stress too much about that if I were you. Sounds like your parents just want you to graduate as soon as possible with something."

Smiling bitterly, Kit nodded in understanding as Amaris described her academic career being largely decided by her family. "Well at least you came from Meadowview so you're used to the co-ed environment and stuff. Plus you're already getting ahead of the game with your internship, so I can see why didn't think to consider SHP. Doesn't sound like you needed it."

He flourished a hand. "Us Hillworth boys, though...I guess people figure setting us loose in a college setting that suddenly has girls would be like setting a pack of wolves loose on a princess tea party. Especially where those Crystal Academy girls are concerned."

"You don't even know the half of it," Amaris groaned, plunking her face down into her newly-crossed arms. "No, they want me to get a major I enjoy and'll probably get a job in? But, like? The whole 'enjoying your major' concept is kind of freaky? I was never meant for college," she mumbled through her hair, letting her forehead contact the table with a thump.

"A lot of Crystal girls aren't as stuck up as you'd think, you know? Some of them, sure, but a lot of them are just badly socialized and don't know how to interact with people outside of their comfort zones. Say -" she perked up - "can I buy you a drink? I've been making you listen to me for the past something minutes, you deserve something in return. Friendship prostitution is a serious thing."

"Hahaha...I think I get what you mean. Like why can't there be a major in partying or playing video games all day?" He propped his elbow on the table and rested his chin on his palm. "Don't you still have time left to think about it, though? I'm sure you'll figure something out."

He grinned. "Yeah, I know better than to make assumptions based on stereotypes. It's the same way with the Hillworth boys. I just mean society in general seems to think it'd be better for them to attend SHP to get used to the environment before plunging head-long into the freedoms of usual co-ed college life. To be better socialized and all that."

Kit blinked as she offered to buy him a drink. "What? Ha, no way; I enjoyed listening to you. Besides, you did the same for me and I was the one who came over and disturbed you. You got everything backwards, first with your apology and now payment. If anyone owes anyone anything, I owe you." He snorted. "'Friendship prostitution', huh? You're gonna have to explain that one to me."

"I already took a gap year," Amaris mumbled even quieter, blowing a raspberry at the table. "They want me to pick up a major sophomore year so I don't ******** up my entire college career, and it's totally reasonable, I just don't like it because I'm basically five years old? And finals are real soon, so I have the time between now and September-or-whenever to figure out a major I actually care about, ughhhhhhh." At this point, her face was one with the tabletop, purple hair spiralling out in all directions.

"Friendship prostitution is a term I literally just made up, so I can't tell you what it means any more than you can, dude."

At the comment that she was basically five years old, Kit laughed aloud. "I'd say the fact that you're having a hard time with this and taking it so seriously already proves you're more mature than five. With your scholarship and self discipline with studying - " He gestured at the book she had on the table. " - even if you have to multi-task or play video games on the side to survive, it sounds like you're on the right track. I'm sure you'll be fine. Maybe just look at a catalog of majors and see if there's anything that catches your eye? At worst, you find out it's not for you and can change it. If it's something you like, you can switch over to something similar so you can use the same credits."

"That happened to a friend of mine," he continued. "Her parents wanted her to take a business major, so she tried that. Hated it. So she switched to graphic design, because she thought she might have liked that, but it turned out not being what she expected and it would have taken her longer to graduate.

"When that didn't work, her teacher suggested she take design management since that was still related to design which was what she thought she wanted to do. It ended up taking her much less time to graduate than her first choice because design management ended up using a lot of the business credits she had taken before.

"Graphic design had worried her because if you get a major in that, you're pretty much expected to be a graphic designer. With design management as a major, though, it was more vague so she had more options regarding what job she could get with it in the end."

Kit shrugged. "It took her a couple more years than the usual four to graduate, but I think everything worked out for the best. Anyway, my point is that it might take some searching looking and maybe some trial and error, but I'm sure there's a major out there for you that you'll end up happy with." Reaching out, he attempted to give her a light, encouraging pat on the shoulder.

"Hahaha, well I figured you must have had something in mind when you made it up. Unless you just meant that you feel like you're using me," he chuckled. "But if that's the case, don't worry about it. I enjoy listening and I’m happy you talked to me."

Amaris just grumbled loudly throughout most of Kit's speech - she was taking it in, that much was clear, but she had a job to do and that job was to wallow in her own cartoonish pit of self-flagellation and despair.

"Ughhhhh. The whole 'switching majors' makes me sound, like, super flaky, is my problem with that? I'm already as flaky as day-old croissants, I don't need it to get any worse. I might just tell an advisor 'I have no life skills beyond what high school and my parents taught me, how can I get a job where I don't flip burgers'." Her tone had lightened, though, clearly trying to both cheer herself up and agree with Kit without actually saying 'sure' to anything.

"Hehe. Who cares what it sounds like? You can't know what you want to do until you've tried out a few things. Unless you decide to settle for whatever you first choose, but that seems kinda boring."

He gestured with a hand. "Plenty of people who've just barely graduated high school have decent jobs that don't involve fast food. I'm sure you'll be fine. Just gotta fake it 'til you make it." He reached over to snatch up her DS. "And play video games."
