The teenager checked the time on his phone for the eighth time in the past ten minutes. He had tried to sit and take out his sketchpad to pass the time with drawing, but he didn't have the concentration to focus on drawing anything around him. His head was too full of questions and curiosity regarding the place his strange new costumed acquaintance had mentioned to him. Part of him couldn't help wondering if the guy had just been pulling his leg, but enough of him had enough faith to believe it was true.

"'Mirror space', huh?" he said aloud to no one in particular. What must it have looked like? A giant mirror maze? Being inside a reflective sphere? He grinned as each mental image he came up with seemed more ridiculous than the next. He supposed it didn't matter much if they were actually going to visit it and he could see it for himself, but he couldn't keep from trying to picture it anyway.

This place...maybe Kit wouldn't or shouldn't have found out about it, but since he'd already seen that winged man appear out of a mirror, that cat had technically already been let out of the bag. Kit wasn't the sort to second-guess himself, either; he'd known what he'd seen. Perhaps that was one reason he believed in the existence of this 'mirror space' - because he had already seen something happen that was unexplainable by any other logic or reasoning.

This single instance of something this unreal occurring right before his eyes had awoken something in him; a feeling that anything was possible and that maybe teachers in school didn't know all there was to know about the universe. Maybe the Tooth Fairy did exist. Perhaps Santa Claus really rewarded good children. If beings like the one he'd met tonight in this very alleyway were real, who was to say anything else wasn't? Maybe not on this plane of existence or this dimension, but if there were places like this mirror space, why not other places?

A childlike wonder filled Kit's mind and inspired him as he hadn't been inspired for a long, long time. Maybe life wasn't as predictable as everyone made it out to be. Maybe, at last, he'd been able to get a glimpse of something more.

While Kit as lost in his own thoughts, Remarque approached from behind him. He didn't know if he should e annoyed or relieved that the civilian actually had waited for him to show up, but he supposed that he should be happy to have a snack for Mirrorspace—or a new Dark Mirror Senshi.

If he'd be so lucky. At the very least, he could dream.

Remarque was quiet, though made no effort to approach silently. He liked his presence known, but Kit seemed in his own little world. He cleared his throat from behind the civilian.

"All right, you've been patient enough. You ready to head out?"

The teen sat up straighter at the sound of a throat being cleared. It was habit from his days at Hillworth. Looking back over his shoulder, however, he grinned and eagerly sprang up from his seat, stuffing his sketchpad and pencil into his pant pocket.

"You bet your sweet a** I am," he laughed, unable or perhaps not bothering to hide his obvious enthusiasm. "At the very least, I'd love to know how you pull off that 'walking through a mirror' trick. Haven't seen any magician pull off a stunt like that before you."

Remarque bit his tongue; it was a bit difficult to explain that he wasn't a magician, but it was magic. He nodded towards the alleyway he'd first come from. "Come on," he said before guiding him to the mirror. The teenager had waited so long for him, he was certain that he'd know to follow.

Hidden down the alley was a simple mirror, five feet tall and a little more than two feet wide. Remarque looked into it for a moment and then extended a hand. "You need to hold on or you won't be able to come through. And hold your breath. It'll feel like jumping into the pool, just for a second, and then we'll be out, on the ground, on the other side. Ready?"

He placed his other hand on the surface of the mirror and it began to ripple, either for effect or because Remarque was just that ready to go.

With a skip in his step, Kit followed after the other man to the mirror he'd watched him appear through earlier that evening. It was pretty large for something that seemed abandoned in an alleyway and the teen marveled at how no one had tried to graffiti, smash, or otherwise deface it somehow yet. At least not that it appeared. Maybe whatever magic that hid it kept it safe or no one bothered to look through the junk back in the alley to discover it.

He blinked at the hand offered to him before grinning broadly and accepting it with a strong grip. "Sounds good to me," he answered, not one to shy away from physical contact. The holding his breath part sounded dubious, but he nodded in acknowledgement just the same.
Kit's grin faded into a more serious expression as he watched the colorful stranger put his hand on the mirror's surface.

To his amazement, the mirror seemed to ripple. He said nothing about this, however, since it seemed perfectly normal to his companion. The likeness of the mirror's glass to water at that moment seemed to explain why what they were about to do would be like jumping into a pool. He reminded himself to hold his breath.

Remarque gave Kit a few seconds to prepare himself--and then walked with him through the mirror. For a moment, it did feel like they'd jumped through a cool pool of water--and then, suddenly, they were on solid land again.

The white walls of Mirrorspace could be jarring, especially when compared to the darkness they'd just come from. Remarque barely cringed, but he had known what to expect. Once they were steady on their feet, he released Kit's hand and decided it was probably best to let him get a look around before dragging him to the throne room.

The hall they were in looked like it might have belonged to a great castle; the ceiling was so far away that there wasn't really any chance of someone reaching it. The walls were white, swirling with a strange black mist. Mirrors peppered the room, and there were several doorways. Remarque paid the normal ones no mind—the important one was the towering frame of the doors leading into the throne room.

"This," he explained, "Is Mirrorspace. Sanctuary of the Dark Mirror Senshi, and a world unto its own. It has a mind, a consciousness, so don't wander off. You might end up somewhere unpleasant, and with no way out?"

He shrugged. "Not a very happy ending. But I'll take you to the throne room. I suppose since you've come all the way here, it would be a shame not to let you at least see the Black Mirror."

Before he'd even had time to fully register the water-like sensation that the mirror had given them, they already seemed to be back on solid ground. That didn't keep Kit from involuntarily shuddering anyway, however. Even if it wasn't real, he found the mere sensation of being wet to be unpleasant.

Soon he was too distracted by the new surroundings to dwell on that, though. He blinked and squinted at first, trying to adjust his eyes to the sudden change in scenery while attempting to take it in with the rest of his senses. When his hand was released by the other man, he used it to shield his eyes for a bit before he was able to see properly again without need for it.

What he saw made him wonder if his eyes weren't still trying to adjust, though. He no longer needed to squint, but everything appeared blurred like a dream. Upon closer inspection, he realized this was likely because a swirling black mist permeated the air about them and contrasted with the white walls of some grand hall. Kit craned his head up and around, getting as much of a view as he could of the ceiling and trying to register everything in his mind.

"Wow...is this what it looks like inside all mirrors?" the teen asked, reaching out to try to feel the black mist. He then noticed the mirrors all around the room and wondered if those were doorways out of this strange dimension. But then there were actual doorways and that made things even more puzzling. Where did those lead?

"...Dark Mirror Senshi?" he repeated, unfamiliar with what that could have possibly meant. "Is that some sort of gang or organization or cult or something?" This sure seemed like some shady hideout place for a group like that. But when the other man explained it as its own world with a consciousness, Kit became more wary. Just what kind of place had he been brought to?

"So is that why not everyone can just walk in here? It only lets some people in?" He gave a little half-smile. "Is that what happened to Alice when she went through the looking glass?" He wasn't sure if the other guy had much of a sense of humor, but he thought he'd get the reference, at least.

The way that the other man began to talk, like he was some honored guest who deserved to see the throne room, set Kit on edge. He continued to smile, but his body and movements became somewhat more tense and his gaze flitted about as if he expected people to pop out and ambush him at any moment. Or maybe that black smoke to reach out and curl thick, tangible tendrils about his limbs to trap him.

What bothered him was he knew very well that he had been invited to see this place on accident, not because he'd been expected. It felt weird to be treated like his guide meant for him to be here rather than just showing him the place to satisfy his curiosity and then kicking him out. And if the 'Black Mirror' didn't sound like an ominous name for an artifact in a creepily sentient place like this, Kit wasn't sure what did.

"Say, princess...call me paranoid, but why would you let me into a place like this, let alone see some special 'Black Mirror' of yours? I'm an outsider, not one of your 'Dark Mirror Sunshine' people. And if this base of yours has a mind, it's definitely gotta be aware of that." He tilted his head at his guide. "You don't even know my name. How do you know I won't trash this place or tell other people about it or run off with something valuable in here?" Kit raised his brows, his grin not quite reaching his eyes. "It's almost like you expect this place to eat me or something."

Remarque seemed a bit annoyed at being referred to as Princess and side eyed the man next to him with a cold look. He shrugged after a second though. "The truth is, you pose no threat to me, or Mirrorspace. Do you really think anyone would believe you if you went out and told them you saw a world between Mirrors? That some strange man slipped from one mirror and showed you around? You'd be lucky if they didn't lock you up."

Though there was a certain friendliness about Remarque, he was confident. The poised air about him never wavered.

"You could try to trash things, I suppose, but I doubt you'd make it very far. There's nothing valuable to steal, and—like I said. You can't leave unless I take you. So," his voice trailed off. "…Maybe you should refrain from calling me Princess and appreciate the fact that I've gone out of my way to show you something most people will never see."

He gave the man a second to let that sink in and continued forward, gesturing for Kit to follow him. "But I suppose you're not incorrect in assuming this is purely altruistic. I don't intend to hurt you, if that’s in any way reassuring. But the Black Mirror responds to those with potential. I want to see if you have potential."

Kit returned the cold look with a flirtatious wink. "There's always someone curious enough to investigate," he countered, though his tone was more playful than threatening. "Not everyone is so quick to dismiss what most might consider impossible."

He blinked. "Whoa, when you said 'no way out', I thought that just meant if you wound up getting lost. I didn't know you were my only ticket out of here." Come to think of it, though, if he tried to get back on his own, how would he have? It wasn't like he came through a door and even if there was some way for him on his own to be able to walk into the other mirrors around, who knew where they might have led him? Suddenly his situation seemed like something to be a lot more concerned about.

At the man's suggestion about calling him princess, though, Kit's grin turned sheepish. "Aw, were you offended? It wasn't meant as an insult. Take it as a compliment; a term of endearment or affection, even." He put up his palms. "But hey, if you don't want me to call you that, maybe you could give me something else to call you instead. I still don't know your name or anything else about who you are." He paused. "'Cept a Dark Mirror Sushi."

Continuing onward, he listened to the other guy talk and raised a brow. "Potential?" he repeated. "For what?"

"Remarque," the Dark Mirror Senshi said a moment later, wondering if he should be regretting his choice of company, "Is my name. It might be best to refer to me by that title."

At the end of the day, he supposed it didn't really matter what he was called—if this guy proved to have no potential, at least. But if he was going to join them…

Then they might need to work this out a little better.

Remarque didn't want to give a civilian too much information, so he tried to keep it vague. He made it through the throne room, pausing only when the Black Mirror was in plain sight.

It was a towering artifact, dark and eerie, with a strange, swirling appearance just beyond its glass surface. "Potential," he clarified, "Meaning more than just a human. Someone special, chosen."

He turned to Kit and gestured towards the Mirror. "If there's some hidden power inside of you, this mirror will bring it out. All you have to do is stand up to it—and try to step through. Like you and I just did, to get here. It's easy. Painless. If nothing happens, nothing happens. But if the Mirror accepts you…"

He shrugged once more. "Then it graces you with a set of powers—it gives you magic, and opportunity."

"Alright, Remarque," Kit acknoweldged, trying out the name. "Chosen by what to become special how? What do you mean by 'more than just a human'? Gonna make me into a werewolf? A vampire? A zombie?" His tone held a playful demeanor, but also underlying suspicion. At this point, the teen wouldn't have put anything past the magic stranger and this crazy mirror dimension.

The grin still on his face, the black-haired high-schooler raised a brow as he listened. Hidden power, huh? Well if all he had to do was stand in front of a mirror and try to step through - not get bitten or otherwise draw his blood - maybe this wouldn't be so bad. Not that he could let his guard down completely. Everything was still very unfamiliar and weird here and he had no idea what Remarque expected to happen.

"Well...we came this far. I guess I could give it a try," he said, not daring to ask what would happen if he failed to step through. Though Remarque made it sound like everything would be fine regardless, Kit remained wary of knowing things most people shouldn't have. Surely the other man wouldn't just let him go after that.

And yet if something did happen? What then? Was he duty-bound to join this group whether he wanted to or not? Would he even still be human enough to make his own decision, or would he be some slave of the mirror and its mirror-walkers? He clenched his teeth in a more determined grin. It was risks like these that reminded one how much life was worth living. What fun would it be if there wasn't a little danger now and then?

And for some reason, Kit felt this test would open the door to whole new kinds of danger than his daily, monotonous life could ever have held for him. Suddenly, he wanted the Black Mirror to swallow him; to accept him for who he was and what he had to offer. To recognize his 'potential' as Remarque had called it. Nevermind what for specifically; simply living life to its fullest.

"Well well. Sounds like I'd be a fool to turn down an oppertunity like this," he commented, studying the large object with its swirling surface. "No point in delaying," the teen added brightly, lifting a foot to step through. He was so focused on getting this over with quickly so as not to lose his nerve that he forgot to ask Remarque a very important question. What was he to do after he tried stepping through, especially if he did, indeed, make it past the glass surface?

Remarque nodded to himself, watching as the surface of the Mirror rippled. There was a pang of hope, that it was the Mirror's way of opening its gates, sharing its power. He had seen civilians approach and the Mirror did little more than reflect their appearance. It was a good sign that it was responding, but he was still holding his breath.

The Mirror had a strange pull to it, like it was trying to suck in the male in front of it. It wasn't an unpleasant sensation; the air twisted around him, in some eerie embrace. It was welcoming, encouraging.

Remarque had never seen the inside of the Mirror—not this one, at least. He'd awakened differently, and never gotten to experience the strange expanse within the Black Mirror. He had heard of what it was like—that the darkness spread in the Mirror. That it felt like there was a vast emptiness, and yet also an unseen path. That the mirror could whisper to you, that it could look into your soul. That it welcomed you, and whispered a name and a sphere, and then it guided you back through the Mirror—spit you out—and there you were.

Empowered, new.

As he watched, Remarque was quiet. He held his breath and waited.

Kit hesitated a second when he felt the pull of the Black Mirror trying to suck him in, but then he took a deep breath and stepped through all the way.

Inside he could see nothing but darkness, but he supposed that was to be expected from the place inside something called the 'Black Mirror'. Even without seeing, though, he felt his soul drawn to an invisible path that, as he walked it, seemed to welcome him.

Something stirred. The harder Kit listened, the more he thought he could make out something telling him something. He concentrated harder on whatever it was until he could finally understand. By the time he did, he must have reached the end of the path, because he was stepping back out through the Mirror he'd walked into.

The teenager gasped as he emerged, overwhelmed by the senses that came flooding back to him once the darkness was gone. He fell on his hands and knees, blinking weakly as he slowly began to make out the shape of his own arms in front of him. Something was different about them.

"Unh...was I...wearing those before...?" he murmured, attempting to sit up.

Remarque breathed a sigh of relief, silent, when Kit—or whatever moniker he wore now—emerged from the mirror.

"Nope," he replied, extending a hand to help the other man up. "That would be part of the 'magic' I was telling you about. But we've got time to go over all of that. While you were in there, did the Mirror whisper anything to you?" he asked. Sometimes it did, sometimes it didn't, it seemed. Or maybe some people were just more aware of its voice.

If the Mirror hadn't passed on this Senshi's name and sphere, he'd have to go find a cat. Not an impossibility, but certainly an inconvenience.

The newly-awakened senshi saw the hand offered to him and took it gratefully, grunting as he pulled himself up on his feet. He put his free hand to his head, wondering what had just happened, exactly. Had that been another sentient mirror? He was barely able to register Remarque's words as he tried to clear his mind so he could process everything.

"Whisper...?" he murmured, trying to think. "Uh...I did hear something..." He hadn't been sure if it'd just been in his head or if it'd been an actual voice, but now that the other man mentioned it, he tried to recall what it'd said, exactly.

"...Sailor Ptolemaeus..." he murmured at last. "...Senshi of Change..." His brows furrowed and he gave Remarque a quizzical look. "What does that mean?" The teen raised a hand to look at the mood rings on each of his five digits. "Is that...me?"
