The weather forecast had predicted that today would be a beautiful day, but the clouds turmoiling in the distance made Flax's stomach uneasy. He always put so much time into plotting things out, putting together plans and carrying them out, he found it disheartening when something didn't go just so. But his hands gripped the basket handle he was holding even more tightly as he approached the spot he had asked Laurel to meet him, ten minutes from now.

It was a worn-down bench, the wood perhaps smoothed by thousands of boys waiting for their girlfriends past. He traced the faded graffiti under his claws and stared at their final destination. It was a warm, grassy patch underneath a tree in that courtyard over there. For a Saturday, he hadn't asked Laurel to meet him anywhere far from campus, and it wasn't like the spot was new. They had probably hung out there with a larger group of friends once or twice. Either way, it would be the first time the two of them would sit under that spot together.

The Nixie bounced his legs impatiently, even though he had been the one to show up early.

Laurel was feeling a bit flustered. Should she try to do something with her hair? But that might make her late, and then she'd have to rush and it would ruin whatever she might have done to her hair. She should at least run a brush through it though, make sure it was neat. Were her clothes okay? They felt a little plain, but it was just a picnic. No need for anything fancy that might get a grass stain, not that she owned anything fancy anyway.

"I'm being silly," Laurel announced to her mirror. She knew why she was so jittery. It didn't have anything to do with Flax and the fact that they were now boyfriend and girlfriend. Well, okay, maybe just a little. She was bad at reading people, as evidenced by now much she had missed in Flax's behavior towards her, and she didn't want to mess things up somehow. But that worry was only in a tiny part of her mind that she could easily dismiss. She and Flax had been friends for a while now, and if problems cropped up she was sure they could handle them. Surely being a couple didn't suddenly mean they couldn't get along as they always had.

Nope, what made Laurel nervous was a tiny little thing, resting in her pocket, that felt like it weighed a ton. She was starting to get an idea of how Flax had felt when he asked Laurel out!

Laurel took a deep breath, gave the mirror one last glance, then hurried out of her room. At least the weather looked nice, and that cold she'd had at the beginning of the week was more or less gone. Some sunlight would do her good, and the breeze felt nice. As soon as she spotted Flax sitting on the bench a smile lit up her face and she picked her pace up a bit. "Flax," she called out, waving a giant paw in greeting. She slowed as she neared the bench and plunked down next to the Nixie, leaning slightly against his shoulder in greeting. "Sorry I made you wait."

When he heard her call his name, Flax's breath caught in his throat. even though they'd been dating for a couple of weeks now, he still wasn't past the deep-seated feelings had had for Laurel. Perhaps he never would be.

The way her hair tumbled over her shoulders made him wonder if the Grimm had purposefully sculpted it that way. He felt his gills wiggle ever so slightly, his face perhaps flush a bit, as she grew nearer. Things felt so much more comfortable between them since they'd been dating. Flax hadn't needed to unnecessarily restrain his words or his actions, showing his affection freely.

And yet, it felt like every experience was brand new, experienced through sparkling, heart-shaped glasses. Even their walks between classes, little snippets of time stolen to lengthen their days together, felt laced with something exciting. Flax felt he was always somewhat on edge now, but in a way that enhanced the world around him. There was never a dull moment with his gorgeous girlfriend around.

The Nixie could hardly contain his toothy grin as she took a seat beside him, and he took Laurel's paw in his hand. "It's no problem" he said, a light chuckle dancing on his words. "I got here early, anyway. I hope your morning went well?"

OH NO I'm so excited to see what you've plotted!!! 3nodding

"Couldn't have been better," Laurel enthused. "That cold was short-lived, and it's gone completely, plus I passed the math and history quizzes yesterday. I got to go to bed happy, then wake up knowing we have the whole day off to spend time together!"

She fidgeted a little in place, wondering if now would be a good time. She had no real flair for romance since she was the type to just go full tilt towards whatever she was aiming at. She probably could have waited for a more strategic moment, but then she'd spend the rest of the day until then fretting, which would probably worry Flax. He was as quick at picking up emotions as Laurel was slow. There was no point in fretting herself to pieces and making Flax worry when they could be spending their time enjoying each other's company!

"I, ah, I got you something. At Hunter's Jubilee. Besides the plushie," she clarified. She'd given that to Flax the same day, but she'd held back the other token she'd gotten for him. Looking back on it she probably should have given it to Flax then, but she'd been worried he might upset him some how by having gone down to the festival without him and didn't want to flood him with gifts and make him feel bad. Since that worry was still there, she probably would have done better to have heaped everything on him all at once.

From out of her pocket Laurel pulled out a small, purple, heart-decorated ring. She blushed a bright crimson as she offered it to Flax. "I have the necklace you gave me, but I never got you anything. I thought you might not like to wear pink all the time, so I picked purple cause it's kind of close to the color of my fur." She had to fight to keep from fidgeting in place. What if it was too corny or common of a gift? They'd been handing them out all over the place, after all, but Laurel hadn't really thought of that at the time. Oh, but what if Flax didn't like it, but pretended to like it so he wouldn't hurt her feelings. Laurel's ears flattened a little on her head and she wished she'd thought things through better beforehand, instead of them all rushing to her now when it was too late to back out.

XD It's only a tiny to moderate plot, but you wouldn't believe how much Laurel was fussing in my head. Also here's the [link] to the winning post, just so it's all on board that I'm giving you the ring and where it came from. Oh, did you see the quote with the plushie in it that Laurel also won for Flax?

And another bit of rambling, if you're wondering about the cold I mentioned, it started up when I was doing Laurels classes XD She gets them pretty frequently, but thought I'd mention in case it came a bit out of nowhere!

Flax couldn't help but smile a bit as she gushed about how much better she felt. He thought for a moment about how sniffly and miserable she'd been just a few days ago, but also how her positivity and enthusiasm never faded. It was certainly one of the things he loved about her.

But he did notice her fidget, the small glances about. Laurel was nervous about something. He was just about to ask if everything was okay when she pulled a small trinket out of her pocket, a ring with little hearts engraved into it. Flax's gills fluttered and his grin spread wider as he accepted the gift. "This is so sweet of you!" he said with a little chuckle. Laurel wasn't typically the one to make an overdramatic romantic move, but the fact that she had thought of this and planned it out - even after giving him the plushie! - just to pull off this romantic moment.

Flax slid the ring on his finger, amazed that it fit perfectly, and leaned over to give Laurel a kiss on the cheek. He pulled away slightly, looking into her eyes. "It's perfect. Thank you." The Nixie wished he didn't make his girlfriend quite so nervous when she tried to make a move, but he supposed that would be something that changed as time went on. After all, he was still nervous when presenting her with things!

With his new ring on his finger, he took Laurel's hand and stood up, clutching the handle of the basket with his other hand. "Shall we begin?" he said in a joking tone of voice. HIs spirits always lifted so much when the Grimm was around, and he wondered if she noticed, and if she felt the same. It was as if he were walking on clouds.

The took the few steps over to the area under the tree, and as the leaves rustled overhead Flax couldn't help but feel excited for this simple but charming date. He removed a large blanket from the top of the basket, just like they did in books and movies. "Would you help me spread this?" he asked gently, offering an edge to Laurel.

Jinxgirl5
AHHH it's so cute though!!! Thank you! And yes, I did see the plushie thing c: I'll put them in my journal after posting this, Laurel is so cute <3 And you're fine about the cold! I noticed it when I was doing my posting for classes, too haha ^__^

Laurel blushed a brilliant crimson, which only deepened when Flax kissed her, but it was a blush of pleasure. She was so glad he liked the gift! In a way that cold had been a blessing, since keeping track of her health had helped to distract her from worrying if Fla would like the ring or not and how to go about presenting it. She grinned broadly, features full of relief and happiness as she stood and moved over to the tree with Flax, giving his hand a soft squeeze and running her thumb over the back of his knuckles. "I'm really glad you liked the ring!"

As they reached the tree Laurel took a deep breath, savoring the scents on the soft breeze. It still smelled like winter, but there were the hints of warmth and growth to come. She turned at Flax's request for help and carefully took a corner of the blanket. "Got it," she said, letting it spill out and unfold while she kept hold of her corner, bending down to grab a second corner once the blanket was more open and spreading it out over the grass.

One of the nice things about this spot was there were no inconvenient stones to torment would-be loungers, so they didn't have to worry about that. To keep a stray breeze from carrying off the blanket before they could set up though, Laurel settled on the most likely corner to take off and stretched her legs in front of her to pin down a second corner. Once Flax and the basket joined her, there should be plenty of weight to keep the blanket in place.

"So how was your morning," Laurel asked, eyes following Flax as he set up.

Similar to Laurel, Flax set himself on a corner, and the basket on another. "My morning was good!" The Nixie knelt in his spot, reaching over to the basket and pulling out the meal. "I went and retook that math test I flunked last week. I did much better this time." He didn't mention that it was Laurel's incredible amounts of help that pushed him through, but he gave her a grateful glance. No Nightmare has ever been luckier, he thought to himself, a soft blush dancing once more across his cheeks.

Carrots and a pink-colored dip, some cubed fruit, and a pitcher of lemonade was strewn on the blanket. The highlight of the meal came last - a couple of sandwiches, painstakingly cut into heart shapes. "I'm no chef, but I hope you like it," Flax said with a self-deprecating chuckle.

Next out of the worn, thrift-store basket came the plates and utensils. The plates were a little chipped, but they functioned well. He set up a little bit of the food on the plate and handed it to Laurel before proceeding to work on his own. "It's just peanut butter and jelly," he said sheepishly. "I wasn't sure what sort of meats you liked, so I just played it safe." It was amazing to Flax, the amount of things he had to learn about Laurel now, even now that they were dating. And still, he wanted to learn every bit.

"Ham and turkey, though if I had too pick one I would say I like ham a little bit better," Laurel promptly replied. "You could have just asked," she added with a little giggle, "though I like peanut butter and jelly too. Oh, I like pretty much all kinds of jam, but grape's my favorite flavor." She picked up the sandwich daintily and admired the shape for a moment then took a bite. The fruit helped to wash the peanut butter down slightly, while a sip of lemonaid was able to vanish it entirely. She ate her food in this pattern, occasionally pausing to eat a carrot with some of the dip.

"It's all super tasty," Laurel declared. It might have been simple fair to most, but Laurel saw all the care Flax had put into the meal and that just made it all the better to her.

"What do you want to do when we're done with the meal," Laurel asked after another bite of her sandwich. "Not that I'm in any hurry to move. We could even do some cloud-watching if you'd like. There's some nice places to go walking as well if we feel like moving around a bit. We could probably even wander around town and check out some of the shops since there's no classes today. Also great job with the math test! I knew you could do it," she added, beaming proudly. She had been more than happy to help Flax study after he flunked it the first time, and she'd been quite confident he'd do well on the retake.

Flax grinned, his blush growing ever deeper as Laurel teased him for not asking her. "I think I like ham, too," he said after a moment. He would have said turkey on impulse, but when he thought about it, ham tended to have a sweeter flavor he enjoyed. "As far as jam, I like less conventional flavors," he admitted, grinning. "I like... apricot, I think." He watched Laurel eat her food in a methodical order while he chewed on his sandwich, moving like clockwork through her various flavors. He loved every movement, and he loved how it differed from his own regimen. Flax was more about compartmentalizing, eating one thing at a time. He didn't want to overexcite his palate.

He almost choked on his crust at Laurel's compliment. "Thank you!" he said, beaming through a small coughing fit. "I'm so glad you like it." The way they were laid out on the blanket was a bit awkward for any cuddling position, but he reached out and gingerly touched her ankle. A mere hint at his desire to be closer to her.

The Nixie looked around as Laurel suggested their post-meal activities. "I wouldn't mind walking around the shops," he admitted. It might be strange, but he loved to window-shop. Plus, after Laurel had given him these nice gifts, he thought it might be his turn to present her with a new trinket. Then he glanced at his hand on her ankle, then removed it to grab a carrot. "But I wouldn't mind just cloud-watching first. That sounds very nice. Would you be okay with that?"

"Sure," Laurel agreed. She had mostly finished her food, sandwich and fruit gone and the last few carrots quickly vanishing as well. She was sipping slowly on her lemonade, and was feeling very contentedly lazy as her food settled. "It'll give us a chance to relax after eating, though we should be careful not to fall asleep what with the nice weather and all," she added with a laugh. It was always a real possibility; even though she didn't feel tired right now, one's body usually couldn't help drifting off when the stomach was full and the weather was pleasant.

In response to Flax taking his hand away from her ankle Lauel extended her leg so that it was pressed lightly against his side, the other still crossed beneath her. It was a casual touch, but her grin said she was just as happy to have the contact as he was. "Whenever you're done we can move the blanket. The tree is nice for eating under, but not so nice for cloud watching under."

Flax laughed as well at Laurel's comment about sleeping. He could practically feel his eyes drooping already as his stomach adjusted to the food he had eaten, and the weather was really nice today. Just warm enough that he didn't have to wear a light jacket, but not quite too warm. The clouds from earlier even had seemed to recede, probably chased away by the brightness of Laurel's smile. He reveled for a moment in the feeling of their bodies touching, even if just barely. The Nixie was comforted by the idea that his girlfriend wanted to be close to him, too.

"I think I'm done," he admitted, popping one last carrot into his mouth. They had really depleted the food. Pride bubbled up in Flax's stomach as he realized that Laurel must have really liked the lunch he put together. He pushed through his growing lethargy, quickly packing up the plates and silverware into the basket. He stretched before offering a hand to Laurel to help her up. They would only have to move the blanket a handful of feet to get out of the tree leaves.

Did you see the slime I had Flax catch for laurel? :3c
PostPosted: Sun Apr 17, 2016 11:57 pm

Laurel accepted Flax's hand, ever mindful of her claws, and pulled herself to her feet with his assistance, giving him a bright smile of thanks. She picked up the basket so that Flax could get the blanket, though since they weren't going very far she placed it by the base of the tree where it would be out of the way.

"That was an awesome lunch, thanks," she said, leaning over to give Flax a peck on the cheek before helping him with moving the blanket. It was much easier to spread to two people, even if the breeze today was pretty light. She settled down, already admiring the much more open view of the sky, and patted the spot next to her in invitation for Flax to sit close before she flopped down on her back, silvery curls going in multiple directions. "I used to cloud watch a lot when I was a freshling, but it's like when you get older the less you think about that kind of stuff," she commented, wondering when the last time she had cloud-watched was. Not for a while.

smolderingskies
Yes, yes I did :3 Much thanks! If you want to do a swap Laurel already caught one pretty early on, but regardless both slimes will probably ICly love to pester both for attention XD Also I have another thing for Flax. The thing isn't here yet, but it is in the works >D

Also sorry if I rushed the scene. I figured it would be quicker and keep the pace moving instead of a post with filler, but I wasn't sure if that was high-handed of me > ->

Flax moved the blanket while Laurel helped with the basket, and he tried to smooth it out before she came to help. He felt his face grow warm on contact with his girlfriend's lips, and he put an ashen hand to his cheek. They settled on the blanket together, and he laid back with his head touching hers. The Nixie felt like he was absolutely in heaven. He laced his fingers through her clawed, more furry ones, trying to hold her hand as tightly as possible.

"I never did it much at home," he admitted, thinking about how he stayed inside and scribbled on sketchbook after sketchbook all day long. The memory of his parents yelling at him to go outside and do something caused him to smile. Flax often went out and kicked stones around for a few minutes, before going right back in, like a boomerang. Then he thought about what Laurel meant by her statement, and realized he agreed with it. Clouds or coloring, he was much more of a perfectionist now. He was more worried about getting the job done than enjoying it. "Yeah."

Red eyes searched the sky, before the junior pointed with his free hand. "See that one? It's just like you. Beautiful."

Jinxgirl5
Nahhhh that's fine!! Flax is in love with his skyfish. And yes, they will definitely pester both!!! And AWW YISSS they're so cute giving each other presents!!!

And nah it's fine!! I wanted to push it along, but I wasn't sure if I was going to be heavyhanded so it's totally cool haha. Thank you!
PostPosted: Fri Apr 22, 2016 7:13 pm

Laurel giggled. "I was going to say fluffy," she said. She didn't have anything on Imps and since she didn't have a ruff she wasn't quite as fluffy as a Grimm could be, but she still had plenty of fur. She didn't have Flax's way with words, so she wasn't sure how to compare him to a cloud. He wasn't fluffy, nor was he blue or white. She certainly thought he was good-looking, though she couldn't spot any clouds she could call handsome. After all, if she was going to compare him to a cloud she wanted to make sure it was the right cloud.

That train of thought took her to qualities about the skies, and weather in general. "Do you think Skyfish ever swim in clouds," she wondered aloud. She was sure they could get up that high, but would they ever do so? Was it too cold up there for them, or would the lack of prey be a deterrent? She was sure there was lots of space and very few predators to worry about, but honestly she'd never thought about it until now.

Flax laughed with his girlfriend, his gaze sparkling toward hers. She was fluffy, but he felt that she was more soft than anything else. And he didn't mind that she didn't return the compliment. After all, he was more of a support than a soft, feathery cloud. Or at least, Flax liked to think he was very supportive. Grounding, even.

"Well, I know Novo has never flown up in the clouds. I'm not sure I'd want him to," the Nixie laughed, albeit a bit nervously. He loved that little skyfish so much, he'd hate to think of losing him. "But I bet... probably wild schools do. They're called skyfish for a reason, right?" Maybe they just did it for fun. Flax imagined that above the clouds, it probably looked just like an ocean. The way they swam through the air, he wouldn't be surprised if they loved reveling in the coolness of the evaporated water.

"I bet it's refreshing for them," he said decidedly, and wiggled a little closer to Laurel. Flax leaned over a bit, giving her a soft kiss on the cheek, breathing in a bit of her scent while he did so. She smelled sweet and powdery, like candy. The Nixie kept his face close to hers, a content smile on his face.
