Activities

None of these activities have strict end dates.

Students will be graded as they complete assignments and new
assignments will be rotated in after a number of participants
that has yet to be determined.

Freshlings:
Quote:
What's in a Number?
Open now!

"Good morning, freshlings," Sheffield says, clearly uncomfortable around so many pairs of wide eyes and grubby hands. "I know that each of you probably has a favorite number and a reason why it's your favorite, but today you're going to learn something a little more practical about it."

"Up here in the front I have a series of cards with numbers on one side and facts on the other. Find your favorite among them and and tell us all something about the number you chose."

He nods shallowly. "You may begin."

Rules:
  1. Choose any number that has a wikipedia entry. There are a few linked below, but if your freshling likes another, feel free to use it.
  2. Write a brief bit of RP (100 words) having your character explain a fact that they read on the back of the card they picked (aka from the wiki entry).
  3. If you wish to RP with another student while you work or finish your assignment in multiple posts, quote Smerdle at the end so she knows it's okay to grade! If you do it in one, don't worry about quoting.

1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9

Juniors:
Quote:
Dice Reading
Open now!

This class takes place far too early in the day, but when you learn of its subject matter, its time slot makes more sense.

"Today we will be determining the direction of your day. As you progress in the field of numerology, you will come to realize that it can be more powerful than any base form of magical scrying, simply because of its logical tether. The more you work with the numbers, the more you will be able to glean subtleties from them. A roll that seems ominous might turn out beneficial if you appreciate it and take steps to turn the tide."

"To start, I ask you to take a die and one of the cards that spells out the meanings of these numbers. Roll and contemplate your result."

Roll meanings:

Quote:
1:
Be kind to your family and the friends who are closer than blood. They may need you sooner than you think.

Quote:
2:
Things are not what they seem. Be cautious.

Quote:
3:
Surprises are in store. Pleasant ones.

Quote:
4:
Surprises are in store, but they will not be ones you appreciate.

Quote:
5:
You will make a new friend. Well thought out plans will come to fruition. A stranger will bring you happiness. A most fortuitous roll.

Quote:
6:
A friend will ask you a favor. Expect misfortune if you do not at least make an attempt to grant it.

Readings are from this site.

Rules:
  1. Roll a 1d6 in this thread.
  2. Edit your post with a brief bit of RP (100 words) where your character rolls a die of their own, checks the meaning of the roll, and contemplates their result in the context of their own life.
  3. If you wish to RP with another student while you work or finish your assignment in multiple posts, quote Smerdle at the end so she knows it's okay to grade! If you do it in one, don't worry about quoting.

Seniors/University Students:
Quote:
Find Your Expression Number
Open now!

Once everyone has taken a seat, Shef gestures toward the board where he has written a brief assignment in his blocky, neat handwriting.

Using the Fadic System, reduce your name to your Expression Number.
Write a brief paragraph on whether or not you feel you resonate with your number.

"The Expression Number is also known as the... Destiny Number, though I find that name a bit foolish. We make our own futures, the numbers do not dictate them. They simply show us the most pleasant path we might take and the challenges we face if we stray." He nods faintly. "Anyway. Begin."

Quote:
To find your Expression Number, take your character's full birth name and, using the chart below, list the numbers associated with each letter.

User Image

Then add those numbers together. Continue separating your sum and re-adding it until you are left with a single number. Once he has seen that you have finished, Shef will give you a slip of paper with the meaning of your Expression Number on it.

Example:
SHEFFIELD

S = 1
H = 8
E = 5
F = 6
F = 6
I = 9
E = 5
L = 3
D = 4

1 + 8 + 5 + 6 + 6 + 9 + 5 + 3 + 4 = 47

4 + 7 = 11

1 + 1 = 2

Sheffield's Expression Number is 2.

Expression Number sheets:

Quote:
1:
This Expression Number represents the pioneering spirit, the risk taker and someone who is willing to put him/herself "out there" and try new things. Extroverted (typically) and very self-confident, sometimes even a bit too self-centered. This card speaks of someone with the desire to win, who will work harder than most to reach his/her goals. Independent and competitive - always growing and striving.

Quote:
2:
The natural diplomat is represented with this destiny number. These people are well-balanced, able to bring people together and reach compromise. They are quite intuitive and can sense the feelings of others which leads to this innate ability for teamwork. Twos embody fairness and balance. They also tend to develop strong musical talents as well due to their natural sense of rhythm and harmony.

Quote:
3:
The 3 expression number speaks of someone who is very theatrical by nature - very expressive, outgoing, and a natural charmer. People with this number are often drawn towards writing, acting, or the arts - anywhere they can express themselves and share their views with others. Threes are capable of abstract thought and can paint pictures easily with words and communication. They have an innate ability to explain complex concepts in a way that is easy for everyone to grasp.

Quote:
4:
People with a 4 expression number are considered down to earth, practical, and orderly. Four people thrive in environments that are well-organized and they love structure and stability. They are often seen as "the rock" or pillar strength in their families and businesses because of their strong sense of duty and discipline.

Quote:
5:
The person with the 5 expression number is a natural adventurer, someone who thrives on new experiences and who is a life long seeker and learner through hands on methods. These people are often "jack of all trades" types who are self-taught in many areas and are always wanting to try something new. The 5 expression number is destined to travel, have a variety of experiences and break free of the societal mold that tells us to "do one thing" career wise etc. Fives change their minds often and when they give themselves the freedom to explore they lead very rich and interesting lives.

Quote:
6:
Six people are driven by a strong sense of duty and often put others ahead of themselves. They are called often to careers that allow them to help others - counselors, health care fields, teaching etc. People with a 6 expression number tend to measure their own sense of self-worth based on what they do for others. They need to be careful to not be too overprotective and to allow others the freedom to make their own choices in life.

Quote:
7:
People with a Seven expression number are very intuitive, intelligent - the seekers of truth and understanding. Seven people tend to be rather introverted and require a great deal of "personal space" in order to thrive. Seven people are motivated in life by a need for greater understanding and are often drawn to philosophical, spiritual, and/or metaphysical pursuits in their quest for deeper meaning.

Quote:
8:
People with an 8 expression number are incredibly competitive, ambitious, and hard working. Often destined for great successes in life, particularly in their career field. Eight people are excellent managers and builders who are very efficient and effective. They are able to balance strong ambitions with care and concern for others which allows them to create strong enterprises that serve their communities well.

Quote:
9:
People with a 9 destiny/expression number are the lofty idealists that inspire us to aim higher. Humanitarian by their very nature, nine people are typically called to lives of activism and social issues. They are driven by a need to be accepted and loved by others and often become very well known or famous for their efforts. People with a 9 expression number are typically highly artistic and creative and use those talents to promote a cause.

Expression Number meanings are from this site.

Rules:
  1. Find your character's Expression Number.
  2. Write a brief paragraph (100 words) from the character's point of view explaining whether or not they feel their Expression Number represents them.
  3. If you wish to RP with another student while you work or finish your assignment in multiple posts, quote Smerdle at the end so she knows it's okay to grade! If you do it in one, don't worry about quoting.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.After the green-haired chimera finished adding her numbers, she came to the result of "Five." She raised a hand to indicate to the teacher that she needed the explanations. When the hybrid gave her the slip of paper, red eyes immediately locked onto what her so-called Destiny Number was supposed to mean.

There was... some inaccuracy to it, she found. Yes, she certainly wasn't adverse to the idea of new experiences, though she understood the comforts of familiarity. And she did indeed learn best by doing despite whatever setbacks she experienced along the way. But the bit about changing her mind often?

Well, no, that didn't sound quite like her at all. She couldn't help but continue reading until she reached what getting a Six meant. Now that sounded more like her. So much so that she re-added up her name's numbers three more times. And she still kept getting Five.

In the end, she decided not to take it too much to heart. Her teacher certainly didn't so why should she. Satisfied with the rationalization of her result with her personal assessment of herself, Mytrax wrote down her thoughts. Even if the professor hadn't asked them to, it paid to be prepared.

A certain flight instructor had positioned herself in the veeeeeery back of the room and was grinning to an almost deranged extent, just barely keeping herself from crossing that line by keeping her silence. She wasn't going to disrupt Mister Sheffield's class (she hoped) but she couldn't help but try out his exercise as well.

When Amihan found that her name gave her the result of One, she felt pleased at first because Wooo~ Go Number One~ Then she remembered (back in her uni days) what that number meant and she was slightly disheartened by it. She didn't think she was competitive or self-centered. Perhaps she was and she didn't realize it! Oh no! That wouldn't do! Maybe she should ask Mister Sheffield or Aqua for confirmation about it.

Yes, that sounded like a plan! Once class was over, she would do just that!

Ami's just sitting in XDDDDD for moral support! Also she's a dork.

Taegan scrawled their name in large letters across the top of their paper as they figured out what their expression number was. Honestly they thought this whole thing was a bit silly, but that they needed to be more well-rounded. One could not get along on alchemy alone, as much as one might want to. Right. Expression number. They did the math and double-checked it to make sure they'd gotten it correct. Their end result was three, and they frowned at the description by the appropriate number. Taegan was not theatrical or dramatic by any stretch of the imagination. Nor were they a natural charmer. Though perhaps there was some kind of innate charm...they had managed to charm Vera, had they not? They had to smile as they thought of the adorable demon.

Still. Taegan thought their expression number had nothing to do with who they had become. They were far from interested in the finer arts and were much more interested in the sciences. This just gave them one more reason not to put much stock in any of this....

Lestari's name sprawled over the top line in curly, cursive writing. This class seemed pretty interesting, and she wondered what her expression number held in store for her. As she did the math, she made sure that she had done it right before coming to her conclusion. She ended up with three and smiled a bit as she read the description. It kinda fit her well, she thought! She might not be theatrical, or drawn to music or writing, but fashion could be considered an art, right? It was certainly how she expressed herself. Every day was another chance to put something wonderful together!

All in all, she was pretty happy with her number and the assignment.

Seray didn't mind waking up early he had always been an early riser that whole early bird gets the worm thing really resonated with him. So this classes time didn't bother him at all, he listened to todays activities and felt a content with what they were doing. It didn't seem hard nor did it seem too boring for him. He waited his turn then rolled his dice, '4' picking up the appropriate card he read it to himself. At first he thought it was pleasant card, a surprise would be a nice change from the dreariness that is everyday life. Then reading the end of the sentence her began to frown, unpleasant surprises were not to be appreciated. He had no real idea what that could mean, nothing to unpleasant ever really happened to him so it seemed strange that it would be predicted now. He had to set him self up to not believe this card because if he did he could then let something bad happen because his mind was predetermined to have something bad happen.

Citali yawned as she tried to understand all these meanings and cards and things. Maybe I'd better understand this if it wasn't so early in the morning. she thought as she yawned once again. Staying up most of the night to read was probably a bad idea on her part, especially having this class so early in the morning.

After rolling the dice, she looked up the meaning and she couldn't help but snort a little bit.

A friend will ask you a favor. Expect misfortune if you do not at least make an attempt to grant it.

Now she was really beginning to question just how legit this class was because she herself did not have any friends. Which made this fortune pretty useless. She couldn't expect misfortune if she didn't have any friends. At first she started to contemplate re-rolling the dice to see if it would give her a different number and a different meaning, but she decided against it. It wasn't in the instructions that they were allowed to roll multiple times if they didn't like the original response. At least the assignment was done, and maybe she could go back to bed. Normally she'd just pull out her book to read, but she was still even to tired to do that.

User Image Numerology, huh? Xochi blinked at the board and started to follow the instructions, add and figuring out which letters of her name corresponded with each digit. She got 32... Which made 5. "Five." Hmm, okay. Now time to find what 5 meant.

Xochi conidered what was written for the destiny number of 5. It didn't seem too farfetched. For starters, yes, she did want to be a life long learner and she wanted to experience new things. She was also more fond of trying things by hand than by obscure concepts. Hands on was the best way to learn. Now... A jack of all trades? She wasn't entirely sure, nor was she entirely sure about the part where she would not want to stick with one career. She was fairly certain she wanted to be a doctor and work in medicine, but perhaps her life would lead her down a new path? She didn't mind the idea of working in a different branch of science... She was particularly fond of botany and biology. Most of this worked then. It was actually surprising and refreshing. "I believe I agree with the assessment. Thank you, teacher, for giving us this interesting lesson."

Zenith didn't really know much of anything about numerology, but it certainly sounded fun. Definitely not math, anyway. Well. Some math, but not complicated math. She listened while Sheffield gave instructions on how to complete the assignment, then dutifully began adding up her own name...

Okay.. 37... which meant 10, which meant 1.. After looking up the definition for one, the hair stood up on the back of her neck. This was... eerily accurate. Too accurate. She went ahead and wrote down her assessment of the activity, still feeling a bit unnerved...

My expression number is 1. I wasn't really expecting anything out of this, but the description for 1 is really... eerily accurate to how I actually am! I am a pretty extroverted person, and I take on a lot of responsibilities at once, which pegs me as a fairly hard worker I'd say... And I do have good self-confidence. So on one hand that's pretty cool, but on the other I'm confused about how that worked so well... what's the secret? Is there some mysterious cosmic power behind names or something that I didn't know about?

Well, she'd completed his request for talking about how she felt about it, even if she had ended it with a question... Perhaps she'd have to look into this more... or get her friends to do it and see if it really was accurate. She signed and dated the paper, then turned it in to Sheffield when it was time.

Castus looked over his expression number, curious to see if he would be able to relate to it at all ...

But as soon as the boy began reading her burst out in to uproarious laughter. This was literally everything he wasn't. He was nothing like his number at all, and tears of hilarity were streaming down his face as he clutched his sides, not even bothering to cover up the sound of his hysterics.

Once the boy finally managed to calm down, he pulled out his pen and paper, setting his pen to the sheet and started writing his thoughts about how ridiculous the project had been. To think, for a moment, he had be so foolish as to believe that the numerology would line up with who he actually was. As if something like a series of numbers could actually define him.

... had it been true, though, he probably would have been freaked out. Laughing it off was probably the easier of the two options for him.

So okay Vanna was mostly here because he needed electives and he did like the more magical aspect of everyday life so it made sense that he would take more magic themed classes however as he looked at the number that was supposed to be his expression number, he had to frown. This was definitely not him.

I know that numerology is serious art and that for some people it is eerily accurate. However I also know that there are a lot of people that find the whole art a bit of hocus pocus. I can see why some times when you get an answer that so totally doesn’t reflect yourself. According to my number I should be introverted and require a great deal of personal space…. I have never been introverted in my life. Occasionally yes the hustle and bustle of everyday life does get a bit much and I might retreat to my room but this also happens to everyone. I am constantly surrounded by different people.
I guess I could be considered understanding and intelligent but I’m hardly a seeker of truth trying to find deeper meaning to the universe. I guess the number was a little disappointing but with so many different types of people in the world it makes sense that expression numbers wouldn’t accurately match up to everyone exactly.

Vanna put down the pen and figured this was enough for now.
