After recovering in the mall for some hours, Megan was on the prowl again. She had an ear out for the telltale clop of that infernal horse, of course, but she had an itchy trigger finger. It was almost the end of the apocalypse, after all, and what good zombie apocalypse was complete without some shotgun action? The weapon had been pretty effective in the fight against that thing that had plunged into their bar.

Plus, she never did have an opportunity to make use of the chain Jeff had given her. Sure, she'd fumbled around with it and figured out what it did, but she never got to really use it.

So she wandered through Zone 1, up the road and past the ruined casino - good riddance - and out into the woods. Without the thick and disorienting fog, it was much easier to locate an undying and engage it.

She considered using the chain against the spiky, lumbering creature, but it seemed a slow opponent and resembled the one that she'd fought in Zone 1. The one she'd beaten right before...

Now wasn't the time to think about that. The sound of her moving through the brush alerted her target and she drew her shotgun as it came at her. It caught her weapon with an upswing, and threw off her aim. The shot grazed.

The hit had thrown her off balance, and she stumbled backward a few feet before she steadied herself and took aim again. The shot rang out into the surrounding woods, followed by the unholy roar of her target, now with a limb blown clean off. No more fooling around.

The creature swung its remaining arm at her, causing her to jump back before taking aim and firing again. Her target crumpled to the ground, defeated.

She stood over the carcass a while longer, aiming her gun at every sound, every nearby movement. Rebecca had died after they killed something like this. At the very least, Megan could try to shoot an ambushing shadow thing.

But nothing came. It was a few minutes more before she her nerves calmed enough to let her root around the area for anything of use.

At first she found nothing of real use, until she kicked at some of the underbrush and found a card underfoot.

Another eerie parallel to Rebecca's death. At least no one was chomped in half?
