When he'd awoken, Harvard had not recognized where he was, beyond the fogginess of the area. Every muscle in his body hurt and Harvard groaned upright. Not for the first time, he thought it must be nice to younger, just entering college. But he was entirely happy with who he was, and where he'd come and who he met along the way. Even if he bones did ache.

As he walked, the fog thinned, and he ended up exactly where he needed to be. The hospital loomed over him, perhaps more forbidding now that the fog was gone. Something called to him from his memories. Harvard ignored them. He needed... he needed to find her, as promised. She was his now more than ever. He had found her again and again. Harvard was not about to fail now.

With a desolate-sounding creak, he pushed the door open to the hospital. "Caroline?" If she wasn't here, he'd keep going. Back to the casino, that corner booth with the tablecloth that dipped down to the floor. Back to the university and the dark corners of his dorm room.

The absent spaces and idle static in her memories were easy to ignore when her days were largely comprised of repetition, finding patterns where there were none, keeping everyone alive and everything functioning to do it all over again. It was easy to fill one day's missing pieces with another, and until now, she always had.

She was staring into her empty hands, as if she thought she had just been holding what she had forgotten. She was trying, because the last moment that she could recall wasn't anything like all the rest. There was nothing to substitute in place of it.

The vacancy in her eyes, however, was filled with a spark of light at the sound of her name in his voice. Keeping the missing thing held safely in her cupped palms, she hurried towards the nearest door.

"Harvard? Where did you go?" She frowned, reconsidering. "Or...where did I go?"

He saw her and it was all he could do not to scoop her up into his arms. For some reason, it felt as thought they'd escaped death, somehow. Instead he reached out gently and cupped his hands around hers. "I think we both went somewhere far and did not tell other. Wasn't that rude? But I came back to find you." Harvard leaned forward and brushed his nose against hers in a rarely allowed display of affection. And this his lips found hers, but he pulled back shortly.

His thumbs stroked the backs of her hands. "Did you find something, too?"

That made sense, and she showed it in her smile, in the way her expression softened with acceptance for the answer she'd been given. Her eyes closed in satisfaction as he offered his affection, just as she did in return.

"That was very rude. I'm sorry. Good that you've found me again--I knew that you would." It was his touch, not his question, that drew her attention towards her empty hands, and she stared at it a moment longer before she shook her head once.

"I found something that I lost." With a tilt of her head, her gaze turned up towards him. "Couldn't have been you, of course. Haven't lost you. We're safe. Safe here together. But I don't remember. I don't--do you? Do you remember what is gone?"

He looked into her green eyes, searching them. A hand raised to cup her cheek, thumb stroking along her cheekbone. "Only you can remember what's gone, Caroline. But if it was gone and came back, then you surely will remember it. It's okay if it takes time." Harvard pulled her a little closer, both hands stealing around to press into the small of her back. He was careful, though, not to completely disrupt her cupped hands. If it was important to her, it was important to him.

"And you won't lose me, not when you carry a piece of me with you, Caroline Falls." There was a heady sense of satisfaction actually saying it. They'd been parted before, unable to speak the words. He kissed her again, more lingeringly, resisting the urge to make good use of that wall nearby.

"--oh!"

Her hands parted slowly, and she seemed to give them time to empty, despite holding nothing but apparent emptiness. The care and respect he provided towards the missing thing had not gone unnoticed, but now that she knew what it was, she knew just as well that it didn't need to be physically carried.

"You were right. That--that was it. It came back, and I've remembered." This was something she was audibly pleased with, the sound of it slipping into her voice. Then she paused to remember him saying it, repeatedly testing the memory, and she smiled into the kiss before her lips pressed more firmly against his.

Five letters couldn't account for all the rest of what she was missing, but she knew that must have been all, because it was so very important and here they already were again, right where they let off. Where they...no, there was still a strange feeling and she couldn't shake it.

"Harvard?" She tried to steady herself to look at him, but gave in without any protest when her body leaned right back against his. "Is there anything else you've lost, or do you think we've fixed it--set it all right again? I haven't had time enough to change the nines to make them right again, so...not sure what is and what isn't."

His hands tightened around her, startlingly forceful, just for a moment. How could she have forgotten that, of all things? "That's a very peculiar thing to forget," Harvard said softly, something glinting in his eyes. "And I think that maybe, later on, you might need a reminder." In his voice was a promise that sounded almost like a threat. He would make it so she never forgot who she was, not in that manner. Never forgot the pieces of him he'd given her and no one else. But for now, he gentled himself, relaxed his hands against her back. Harvard knew, for later, exactly how to make sure she remembered, too. It was going to be a very long, exacting process. He looked forward to it.

But her question once again forced himself to focus on the now of Caroline in his arms. It was a good now, so he didn't fight it. Instead, he hummed against her hair. "I think this is as right as it can be now. I've found the most important things and if anything else is missing, it will come in due time. There's a gap of time from the us before to the us now, but if it were important, I would know it." He kissed her temple. "But I do not, so it is not." It was so easy for Harvard to discard minor things as long as he held close the more important things. As long as he kept his promises.

"Have you lost something else, Caroline?"

A gasp leapt into her throat and half of it caught there, its sound fractured and incomplete, but not hurt or discontent in the slightest. She didn't dare move her eyes away from his, her mind busy determining if she should explain or not. There were reasons that seemed to make sense, answers that she could have offered, but she liked the way her pulse skipped and raced into motion at the look in his eyes. There was a danger in his words, and the risk of it thrilled her.

It couldn't frighten her, whatever his intention was. She still felt safe, and still felt that she had every reason to. She would have even if he hadn't lessened his hold on her or given the soft little kiss, but relished in it all the same.

"Yes," she agreed, nodding slowly as she processed that all was well. "Yes, you're right. Not important. If I don't know it, and you don't know it--yes, not important."

The nagging sensation that something was off hadn't gone away entirely, but it seemed to be on its way to doing so.

"I've lost a lot of things. Some I remember. Some I don't." Her smile started small, then broke into a grin. "But I think that I'm better without. I don't need more than what I've found."
