Kane knelt down by the human and inspected its pockets, honestly a little curious about what it was that humans kept with them. He found that only a shovel and some daggers were probably of any use; truly curious, he thought as he got back up after gripping the human by its ankles. He made a quick judgement call as soon as he first saw the human: it was bigger than him, and quite possibly heavier and would take up too much of his energy if he carried it.
So he quite literally just grabbed its ankle and started walking. He did at least try to avoid the bumpier spots on the ground...but otherwise, the human was probably fine. Probably.
It was a fairly long trek back but they arrived at the portal soon enough, and with a grunt he pushed the human through and followed, expecting to be met with cheers from some kind of a success party for their emergency mission...thing.

Only they didn't.
Instead they were just on another long stretch of human road, and when he glanced about to assess the new situation he noticed the vine-covered skyscraper and, again, all the human cars. Kane heaved a sigh and was about to continue dragging his human along to find what he hoped would be another portal he could use to head back to safety when it started rumbling all of a sudden.
He turned quickly to sse a massive horse-like creature barreling straight for him.
"Aw, nuts!" he grumbled and hefted the big human up onto his back, finding some difficulty in adjusting his gait for a while until the human was piggy-backed properly. From that point he started to run as fast as he could, toward the thickening fog wherein, much to his surprise, he felt his humanoid shape fall away. Now it was he who was barreling through the maze of cars, all black and completely skinless from nearly head to toe. He was like a shadow sprinting across the grey expanse, with a horse-vine creature on his tail. He felt its vines claw and slash at him but still he ran.
And ran, and ran...

It was likely just dumb luck that he ran straight into a windowless car, rusted over and decrepit and old. He fell right through the window, but as he recovered he saw there was a key in the ignition, and he remember that his father had a contraption just like it that he got to drive once! A brief memory of his family eased the tension in his shoulders for a moment, but only that singular moment. When he saw the vine-horse coming for them again he hopped into the driver's seat and tried to turn it on.
It sputtered and sputtered but eventually came to life, getting a triumphant sort of laugh out of Kane before he tried to speed away in the old thing.

Oh, they were moving alright. Slowly. Painfully slowly, even as he tried to floor it. He growled and banged on the steering wheel just as the creature caught up and rammed into the poor car, severely denting it and veered them off course. Kane recovered (by some kind of miracle, he wasn't entirely sure how it happened) and got them back on the right track, this time easing his foot down on the gas and hoping it was get them to the portal a little faster.
Just a little faster, if the rusted old junker could manage that.

And faster it went until finally he saw the portal. A rush overcame him and he hit the gas and caused the car to jump forward and move that much faster. He nearly gave a whoop, but before he could he realized that the brakes wouldn't work. Slowly they chugged past the portal at a speed that seemed impossible for the old jalopy, so with another growl he jumped to the back and abandoned his post as driver. As quickly as he could manage he opened the rear and door and shoved his passenger out, and followed suit, coming to a painful, rolling stop just in time to avoid crashing into a small pile-up several feet ahead.
It seemed these situations were never easy...
Still, he got up, a little more worse for wear than he expected to be, and grabbed hold of his victim's ankle again. He had no more energy to carry him, so he decided that dragging would be the best option. He went back to the portal now, speed significantly reduced due to the slight limp in his gate, but at last they made it. At last, to safety!

It took a whole lot longer than he thought it would and he figured they were nearly out of time, so when they finally got to the portal he sat up the human, who looked about a thousand times more banged up than when he found it, and started to push it towards the portal when its eyes shot open.
"What the ********!" it cried out and made a move to punch him right in the face!
"Whoa!" Kane managed to dodge the punch and it grazed his shoulder, and as another one was coming he rolled out of the way and got to his feet. The surprise on the human's face as it took in the sight of his natural form was amusing, and just the distraction he needed. Without hesitating, he swung the shovel with enough force to make a very loud thud and knocked out the human again.
Unfortunately, just as he was dragging the human back to the portal again, it disappeared before his very eyes.
He blinked toward it, mouth hanging open a little for a minute or two. He even dropped the human's ankle in his disbelief.
Was he...stranded?!
