Attentive -- “I call it ‘paying attention’. You should try it.”
Kane is always paying attention, even when it seems like he isn’t. He just has a tendency to pick up small, trivial things that most people wouldn’t notice, and he’ll have no problem remembering someone as “that guy with the speck on his face and he didn’t notice so I wanted to punch him” or something to that effect. Of course, this doesn’t really mean he wants, or even means, to notice. He just...does. In fact, the only time he ever really wants to pay attention is if animal pelts are in the picture. If that’s the case, it’s guaranteed his eyes are fully on you.
Objective -- “I’m looking at all sides of the story, here.”
Kane is the sort to step back and look at everything from a more unbiased perspective, whether it’s a decision he’s making for himself or if he’s helping someone (which is, he would admit, very, very rare) deal with a situation. It just makes the most sense to him to weigh every side or option that’s on the table before he makes a suggestion or gives an opinion, and so he does. This does, however, mean that he may not simply side with you just because you’re “friends,” which may or may not rub some the wrong way. Not that he really...cares at all.
Meticulous -- “Uh, yeah, I do sweat the details. Problem?”
Every. Detail. Matters. Especially the finer ones, though Kane is generally pretty fussy about organization and things like that. His room could likely contend for cleanest or most organized, or even most alphabetized. Everything has designated spot, and his days, while not scheduled to the second, are usually well plotted beforehand so he at least has a general idea about what he’ll be spending a lot of time in during any given day. He’s likely borderline neurotic, and he tries to keep as much of his life in relative order as he can manage.
Private -- “Keep your nose or...whatever you’ve got... out of my business.”
Kane doesn’t appreciate nosy creeple. He just...doesn’t. End of story. His business is his, and if he wants to share he will, otherwise don’t bother. He doesn’t like being asked overly pushy, over-the-line questions about his past, and he won’t put up with it if he’s ever faced with such a situation. Not that he’d lash out, but it’s likely that he’ll just go out of his way to avoid whoever’s offended him. He’s the sort that also dishes that same respect for privacy with regard to others’ business, and so isn’t likely to ask any of those kinds of questions.
Tactless -- “Why, no, that is not a very flattering outfit.”
If you don’t want an honest answer, best not ask Kane for his opinion. He’ll give it without a second thought, pretty or not. Perhaps too often not, but the way he figures it at least he’s being honest. He doesn’t particularly care if he’s hurting someone’s feelings, and won’t bother filtering his thoughts if he’s in a talking mood (which isn’t all that often, really). Of course, if he’s told that he might have gone a bit too far he might consider apologizing, but he tends to just shrug off whatever guilt he’s meant to feel and move along.
Detached -- “Yeah, so, tell me again why I should care?”
Uncaring and indifferent are two words he’s come to associate himself with, and he believes others also see him as such. He’s found that such an attitude works as a sort of shield that he can throw up at his convenience, and it helps keeps the “feels” at bay, so he keeps a safe, likely none-too-healthy, distance from everyone around him. He also a sort of touch aversion and has a 2-foot radius “bubble” that he likes to maintain. He gets shifty and tense whenever anyone pops this bubble, never mind when they actually touch him.
Possessive -- “Do you mind? Stop jacking with my stuff!”
In his dorm it’s probably just better if one kept their hands to themselves. He gets absolutely finicky when people so much as look at his things with any kind of curiosity. He also has a bad habit of breathing down their neck should he let them actually touch the stuff. Kane’s very, very possessive, most especially with things he’s been gifted with, and doesn’t exactly like the idea of having to share anything, friends included. He might lash out at anyone trying to get close to someone he considers a friend, even more so if he considers them family.
History:
Kane was separated from his family when he was still very young. His kidnapper took him for the sake of researching a monster's ability to shapeshift into various forms. Skinwalkers are known for this ability, and so Kane was targeted as a young, still shadow-form child. Shapeshifting for his kind is physical bone and sinew transformation so being forced to transform into various forms almost on a daily basis was torturous for him. The rules for shapeshifting of his kind were stretched, bent, and very nearly broken over the course of numerous tests. He was caged and fed scraps, essentially treated like a lab rat, housed in what seemed to be a sizable shed of some kind. He was able to escape one night after he managed to keep the form of a ferret for much longer than he'd ever been able to before, and he squeezed out of his cage and through a hole in the wall.
He never looked back when he ran away, and he ran until he passed out from exhaustion. He was found and eventually adopted by an older couple, but despite the newfound comfort he was plagued with nightmares and would often wake up in a cold sweat and start running again, though he would always come home once he woke up. His parents never asked him any questions, but these nightmares made them want to shelter him and hide him away from the world all the more.
Race: Skinwalker
Natural Form:
Kane's natural form is a very solid, very tangible shadow version of an alive-and-well, albeit skinned, humanoid being from the neck down; the finer details like all the visible muscle tissue (among other more grotesque things) are, however, usually lost to most who see him in this state because it's shadowed out and hard to notice. Despite being perfectly solid, this form has a slightly wispy appearance, specifically around the edges and what should be his hair. Where his eyes should be are simply dark sockets with lingering dark, coal red pupil-sized orbs that give off a very weak afterglow. His feet are those of a canine and his hands are more claw-like, which are perhaps the only other things most anyone notices besides his "eyes." From the neck up his face looks "normal" enough (save for the eyes), though his features are, much like the rest of him, shadowed out and hard to notice unless one looked carefully.

Why are they enrolled in Amityville Academy?
His adoptive parents realized that they couldn’t keep him sheltered forever, and that, despite their good intentions in keeping him at home where he feels safest, he needed a proper education. They decided that it would also be good for him to go out and actually socialize with others, maybe find a good friend or two among his peers.
