The fog hovered on the edges of everything. The hospital was there, looming in the darkness. Autumn had never really known anything to loom before, but now she fully understood what that word meant. "It's ominous." Really it was terrifying, but she didn't want to say that.
Autumn scratched at her arm. "I wonder if the sun plans on rising anytime soon?" She found herself slightly irritated that it was still dark. It seemed like it had been dark for ages. "What do you think? It can't stay dark forever, can it?"
The dark was when the infected were out... Everyone is infected. The voice was insistent on that fact.
OOC: Prompt 6 - Awakening
Scenario requirements: Your character wanders around outside, too scared to go into the hospital, too scared to go back to the fog. At some point the fog encroaches, and envelops them entirely. They begin to hear voices from all directions, and it directly shatters their psyche as they are no longer able to process or comprehend what or who they are. They wander the fog for hours, trapped in a state of non-living, as they begin to develop several personas, and talk to each persona of themselves to cope with the situation.
Eventually the effect subsides, and they escape the fog, feeling shaken. It feels like however, a switch has become undone, and they might become unstable again, to the point of even being taken over by the other personas.
If rping this event with multiple people, you only have to pick ONE person to get trapped by the fog, as the other people simply search for them. At the end as the fog recedes they can find them again!
When the event is over, add +10 infection to your character's infection meter Characters involved: Autumn and Joy Ann Extra effect: Something about flashlights. xD

Joy Ann was beginning to itch, and she had no idea why. Maybe it was the heebie jeebies that just looking at the hospital was giving her... Or maybe she was dying. She was probably infected and dying, or undying, as the case might be.
Regardless, she was wandering aimlessly in the grounds between the hospital and fog, trying to keep it together. She kept thinking that she was seeing faces or people that she knew, but if she looked closer it was all random nonsense instead. That combined with her earlier nose bleed---or hallucination of a nose bleed, she really couldn't tell what had actually happened and what hadn't at that point---was making her feel very, very angry when she wasn't feeling itchy.
Wait, was that Autumn..? Joy Ann stared and rubbed her eyes, sure that the sight of her friend was going to vanish in a moment just like all the other faces she'd seen. Why did everyone keep running away from her!? It was so frustrating!

Was it even possible for the fog to be thicker here? It seemed so. "It's funny that we call fog thick, isn't it?" Autumn put her foot right in a patch of it. The gray mist swirled and seemed envelope her limb, caress it almost. "We don't call water thick, and fog is just water." She scratched at her neck as she shrugged the idea away.
The talking was helping. It helped keep the voices quiet, helped keep the things following her away.
We're still here.Everyone is here. This way. This way.Everyone else is infected.
Another step into the fog. It was thicker here. "Of course it's thicker, dolt, it's like a horror movie. It's always thicker in horror movies." Autumn huffed at herself, and took another step.
"I--" She stopped as the voice whispered in her ear. Welcome. She froze, trying not to shake, trying not to turn and look. She didn't want to know what had just whispered in her ear. If she didn't look it wasn't there.
"That's not how it works." Her voice, though she didn't know if she'd spoken or not. "That's not how it works, silly." A laugh.
Three more steps, a pause. "What do you mean?" Welcome. Autumn shuddered.
"I mean don't be stupid. It's there, whether you look or not. Foolishness, childish." She scoffed.
Stay.
Autumn felt like crying, she felt like laughing. "But I can't see anything besides the fog. There is nothing but fog."
"Of course. It's what's in the fog you need to worry about."
Right here.
Autumn whirled, and the mist whirled, too.
"See. You looked, but it didn't change the fact that it's still there."
Where.
"Here."
"Alone."
Together.
She swirled, and sat.

It was Autumn, but that wasn’t going to stop Joy Ann from rubbing her eyes again as Autumn stepped into a patch of fog. This vision hadn’t vanished in the same way as the others, which meant that she had to be the actual Autumn and not another possible figment of Joy Ann’s imagination. Joy Ann pinched her arm out of habit, even though part of her knew that her brain telling her she was in pain wouldn’t stop this particular waking nightmare.
But if it really was Autumn... Man, was she angry at her for leaving her alone in this mess! How dare she go off into that fog all by herself! What was she thinking?! It was faction or no one at this point. Or friends… Or something… Why was she angry again?
Joy Ann shook her head, ignoring a voice that had popped up to tell her that she was the worst faction mate ever. No, no, she wasn’t, and she was going to march right into the fog after Autumn and figure out what the heck was going on.
“Autumn! Autumn ... Flint!” Joy Ann almost hadn’t remembered Autumn’s last name, but it was almost as if another voice had supplied it for her. “You come out of that fog right this minute!” Joy Ann stamped her foot, not sure if Autumn had heard her. “You’re supposed to help the rest of us! You can’t just run off on your own! That’s selfish!” If she had been a little less angry at the moment, she probably would have felt horrible for calling Autumn selfish, especially since she didn’t really deserve it, but… Well, she was angry. “How dare you!” So there!

"No, no." Autumn shook her head. "I'm alone." Thus, there could be no one calling her name. Are you? "Yes."
This voice sounded angry to Autumn, angrier than she had been with herself. "Well, if you'd just listen there would be no reason to be angry, Autumn, would there?"
"No, I suppose not."
"See, I'm always right."
"But you said there was nothing there."
Here.
"Where?"
Nowhere.
"Right there," Autumn said, turning. The mist swirled on the edge of her vision, and she could see Joy Ann there, not far away. "See. You were wrong."
She waited for a response, but there was none. It was there, on the tip of her tongue, but Autumn couldn't bring herself to say it. She shuddered, all but feeling the fog swirl and dissipate around her. She'd been talking to herself. Flat out talking to herself. For how long? She didn't know.
Slowly, she climbed to her feet.
"Joy Ann?" She called the name at the figure, and fully expected it to dissipate, too.
Alone.

Yes, it was definitely an actual Autumn and not another vision. Joy Ann blinked in confusion as her anger faded, not sure where that left her. "Yes..?" she responded to Autumn calling her name, almost forgetting what she had just said. Right, she was saving Autumn from the fog.
"It's me, I promise." At least I think it's me, a moment of self-doubt flashed in her mind as she reached a hand out for her friend's hand. "Let's go back to the yard, I think I saw someone building a bonfire." It wasn't the prison yard granted, but a bonfire meant no infected... Well, no infected other than themselves, if the voices were to be believed.
She rubbed her itchy nose with the back of her free hand and gave Autumn's hand a small squeeze. "Don't leave me, please, I think I'm seeing things." Or just plumb going crazy. It was kind of hard to tell.

Autumn was skeptical. No one was real out here.
I'm real.
Her skepticism is likely what led to her jumping at actual human contact. Joy Ann was real. "Okay. That sounds like a good idea." Fires were good and safe and warm.
"Don't worry. I'm not going to wander off." She glanced around at the fog sitting idly all around them. When she spoke next, her voice was a whisper. "I think there are things in there that talk to us. Best to stay out of the fog."
I'm here.
Autumn shuddered again.
