It was actually kind of relaxing, just walking through a quiet spot for a bit of alone time. No one else was really around, and the only risk was running into the occasional undying. She had her sturdy fishing rod for that, though, which was currently slung over her shoulder and at the ready in case she did have such an unpleasant run-in.
Like the one she saw in plain sight as she rounded a corner...

She did the best she could and walloped it good until it finally disappeared, though she managed to take a good bit of injury for herself. She wasn't a trained fighter so there were guarantees that she'd get out of a fight without suffering some kind of injury, right?

When it disappeared Mel took a seat for a break and, after inspecting the ground that it was standing on she spotted a card, much like the first card she ever found on these things. Maybe they collected them? She sure was.
After pocketing the newest addition to her collection, Mel got up and continued with her stroll.

She strolled on, her thoughts wandering to her family's whereabouts yet again. Lately, with all of the commotion she found herself thinking about them more often. Each time she cried less and less, and right then, despite the slight blurriness in her vision from the tears that were welling up, she was holding it in pretty well...

She jumped when she suddenly heard something lurch and groan toward her left, and then quickly wiped the tears in her eyes away before she pulled her fishing rod out again to defend herself. Dang things were everywhere.

She did the best she could and whacked away at the undying, exchanging blow for blow. In the end she came out the victor though, and a little worse for wear than was ideal. Still, he was alright.

Another break and another ground inspection, but this time it turned up nothing. Mel moved on, a little more alert than she was earlier. That was two in succession, so it seemed like she might be moving toward a place where they were gathering. Which...wasn't safe. If she ran into just one more she'd kill it and turn back...

After a while there was still nothing, so Mel relaxed and continued with her stroll, her smile returning. She tried to keep her thoughts from going back to her family; no sense in starting another crying session, especially not while there was still a risk--maybe a low risk where she currently was, but still a risk--of running into an infected or undying.

So she let her thoughts wander to her old life, an average one at best. Mel never really strived to be anything special, she just wanted to get her degree and start living life. That was always the plan, and she never had a contingency plan for zombie apocalypse. Her friend Randy did, though; ahh, Randy. The man bought that book...the one they made a movie out of its sequel or something? She couldn't quite place the title, but the memory of her friend brought tears to her eyes as well.
"Damnit..." she muttered as she wiped them furiously away. More quickly replaced the ones she tried to get rid of, to the point where she just let them fall.
She missed her life, all of it. Her family. Her friends. School. Her teachers. Homework. Exams. All the little things she used to complain about or rant and rage about. Her average-ness, if that made any sense at all. What she would give to have it all back..

It was when she decided to take a seat to gather herself that an undying came about, and in a way it was a sort of relief. She had something to take out her frustrations on now, and whatever thing than the source of said frustration. These things ruined everything, and they were all suffering because these things existed. Whatever or whoever they used to be, right now they were just a target for Mel. Her grip on her fishing rod was particularly tight as she charged at this undying.

Mel was particularly violent with this one, not even caring that it was making hits as she quite literally whacked it into oblivion. Even after it dissipated she kept on hitting. All she could hear was the sound of her fishing rod making contact with the ground, and all she could see were her tears, which started falling freely as she kept right on hitting. She eventually fell to her knees, her rage now reduced to quiet sobs.

She didn't even care that there was nothing on the ground for her to find. Not this time. It took a while but eventually she was able to gather herself, her sobs having dwindled down to the occasional hiccup, and when she did she got up and made a beeline for Clearview Apartments.
