Nate felt like a complete idiot running off into the zone after having sustained such trauma only a few hours earlier, but he knew it was either that or cowering on a cot and whimpering about his boo boo’s. Between the two possible death seemed like a much more appropriate option, lack of intelligence required. Whereas most everyone had been able to shoot of toward the danger in some way, he was left limping behind. Stopping to catch his breath and exchanging glances with the few who sustained similar, or worse, injuries to his own.
“Here we go..” He muttered, his confidence waning each time he had to lean against something in order to catch his breath.

Before long the crowd he had started out with had thinned almost entirely whit just a few sightings here or there as people spread out to eradicate the infected. If he hadn’t been losing heart before he certainly would be now, if he were to run into a mob the likelihood of anyone coming to his rescue was more than slim. Cracked ribs would make fighting or fleeing nearly impossible as his movements would be slowed down considerably, and breathing would be tough as had already been demonstrated by his constant wheezing and panting. Well, maybe he could illicit enough pity from the infected that they would simply surrender to him. Ha, what a thought.

After a time of lumbering clumsily about he began to wonder if those who had sustained lesser injuries had already defeated the infected lurking around these parts. Though, part of him knew this to be nothing more than the wishful thinking of damaged goods. Yet again he needed to stop in order to catch his breath so he leaned against a decrepit building for strength. “It would be nice…” He muttered, his dream about not having to enter into combat still lingering. It wasn’t that he was afraid to fight, but it seemed as though he was heading into battle with a handicap. At least before he stood a decent chance, but now he would likely be unable to dodge or even get around the suckers in time to land any punches.
As fate would have it, it was just at that moment that he began to hear that sound that kept him up at night. His uncle’s horrified face flashed before his eyes and he knew exactly what was coming for him.

The last time he had seen the infected was the night that the prison had been first attacked, and now he could clearly remember why he had been so afraid. Rotting flesh, bloody foam leaking from slack jaws, and eyes devoid of life fixed on him. He wanted to run, to flee like a little rabbit from a fox but he would not submit to such cowardly impulses. He had come out here to fight or die trying, and that is exactly what he would do.
Taking the stance he had learned in the Academy he waited for the right moment to strike, his heart pounding and his sides aching from the effort it took to breathe. He wasn’t sure whether he would land a punch before blacking out and becoming a meal or not, but as the mob grew closer he decided to take a chance.
The act of throwing a punch caused pain to radiate up his sides and throughout his entire body. Any oxygen he may have had stored in his lungs was sharply expelled as he felt every inch of his cracked ribs. Before he could do anything else one of the vile monsters took a swing at him, and even more pain flooded his neurons as it landed the hit.

Just as his sergeant had stated during one of their training exercises, adrenaline was an ally. Before long the pain began to lessen as his system was flooded with the potent chemical. Though he still had hindered movement he could at least dodge a little more effectively than at first. This time around his assault was successful as he raised his leg and sent it crashing into one of the infected. If the situation wasn’t as grave he may have taken a moment to gloat, but the victory would have to wait. Just as he was about to go in for another hit, he was blindsided. “Dammit!” He cried, bouncing away from his assailant as best he could.

The hit was exactly the fuel he needed to go for the one that seemed to be mocking him at the moment. Though it had no legible facial expression, there was something about it that told him it was boasting. Gritting his teeth against the urge to crumple to the ground and feebly attempt to catch his breath, he charged forward with a battle cry he had learned from his training days. It made him feel as though, in that moment, he was stronger than he actually was.
Interlacing his fingers he brought his clubbed hands down over the monsters head and watched as it almost seemed to cave in on itself. With a devilish howl the infected flailed a moment before going still. “That’s right!” Nate shouted. Yet again his moment was cut short as another took a swipe at him and caught his shoulder which caused him to jerk painfully in a highly uncomfortable direction.

The corkscrew motion had him reeling, and for a moment he thought he would be incapable of recovery. Even though he had taken out a few of the members, the greater portion of the mob still advanced on him. He wished now more than ever that he had his Glock strapped to his side; bullets would make this a much more equal fight. Again with the wishful thinking, nothing was that easy in a world as terrifying as this.
He waited, biding his time and gulping down valuable mouthfuls of air until the next snapper made its move. It flew at him with open maw, teeth chomping and fingers set to dig into any flesh it could find. Reaching out he snatched the things arm and used its momentum to fling it over his head and send it crashing down atop an upturned pipe. Thankfully the pipe was sharp enough to impale the monster. Maybe his luck was beginning to turn after all, but that maneuver cost him dearly as he was forced to take a knee.

At that moment all he could do was pull himself inward as much as possible so as to defend himself. Any attempt at standing was too much for him and he would find himself falling once more to the ground. Of course the enemy took this as the perfect time to strike and all he could do was to keep their teeth from meeting with his flesh, and bat their snatching hands away from his vitals. Every so often he would come up with just enough energy to push them off, and a few he even managed to inadvertently kill with his pushing but he was definitely taking more damage than he was dealing.

The stalemate continued as he managed to keep himself safe from their more violent attacks, but he was still unable to do any damage to end the battle. Pain was the only thing he could feel as the adrenaline began to wear off. This would be it, he would die after his first fight and all because of those stupid bandits and their itchy trigger fingers…

It was now or never, either he would die curled up in a little ball or he would fall a warrior. It took every ounce of strength he had but he hauled himself up off the ground and charged forth in a final assault. Crushing skulls, ripping and tearing at throats he became consumed by the frenzy and did whatever he could to bring this to an end. Everything he could damage, he aimed for.
He hardly even realized when he had gotten to the last one, and it took him a moment to calm down afterwards. With a sigh that hurt like hell and a laugh that pained him even more he fell back against a few metal barrels and shook his head. How he had managed to pull that one off he had no idea..
