Freshmen Quest: Building Maintenance In light of the recent surprise infected mob, Corey has created a new duty for the University Faction: Building Maintenance. The goal of this quest is to patch up holes and create traps in an effort to protect the overall group.
Quest Notes - This quest can not be completed solo. There must be two or more people in your group. - Each person must do all the steps and dice rolls. No tag teaming! - Your group is given a rather heavy bag of equipment. It's clearly all items from the maintenance shed, and includes such items as a hammer, some nails, a screwdriver set, some fishing line, a measuring tape, etc. Building maintenance supplies. These do NOT count as materials, just aids to help you ICly. - This requires some imagination - after all, there is a very real chance you might be clogging a broken window with a bucket.
Step One - Material Gathering - Before you can begin the maintenance, you must gather some materials! - Roll a 5d12 in one post, and match your result to the materials below:
1: You break a couple desks, and now have TWO pieces of wood! 2: You find…a bucket? Well, alright. 3: There are a bunch of backpacks lying around. Three of them. Might as well bring them along. 4: You lucky deviant! You found the Janitor's cart. It only has a mop, some cleaning supplies (a bottle of windex, some bleach, and 4 unused garbage bags), and precisely three towels. One of the towels is a grease rag though, at least the other two are clean. 5: WILD CARD - You can find ONE item of your choice. It can be anything you think you would find in a university setting. Keep in mind that everyone has had a month to scavenge, so the pickings are slim! 6: You manage to pry down a dry erase board. It's got to be good for something. 7: You find a projector. Hurray? 8: WILD CARD - You can find TWO items of your choice. It can be anything you think you would find in a university setting. Keep in mind that everyone has had a month to scavenge, so the pickings are slim! 9: There are a bunch of bells in a box. Three of them. We're not sure why. But there they are. 10: You find a bottle of alka-seltzer near a bottle of coke… (This counts as one material) 11: WILD CARD - You can find ONE item of your choice. It can be anything you think you would find in a university setting. Keep in mind that everyone has had a month to scavenge, so the pickings are slim! 12: You find a stack of boring looking books. Three of them. Might as well put them to some use.
- Pool your resources. Make a master list of what was found, including how many of them there are. These will be the materials you get to work with as a group! - Continue on to Step Two.
Step One-Point-Five: Choose post order - This can be done however you want! You must go in post order for step two.
Step Two - Makeshift Maintenance - Hurray, you have materials! Now to put them to use. - Each person in the group rolls a 1d10 in turn, until there are no materials left to use. Pooled materials will be used on a first chosen-first used basis. - Match your rolls to the problems below, and do your best to fix them using the pooled materials your group rolled earlier! This means you get to be a little creative with how some of the items are used. - Once a material is used, it can not be used a second time. Once it's used, it's gone!
1: You find a small hole in the wall. (Requires 1 material to fix) 2: WILD CARD - You find something to fix. What it is, is your choice. (Requires 2 materials to fix) 3: There is a slightly broken window. (Requires 1 material to fix) 4: This window is very broken. (Requires 2 materials to fix) 5: WILD CARD - You find something to fix. What it is, is your choice. (Requires 1 material to fix) 6: Some of the flooring is compromised, and has a foot-shaped hole in it. (Requires 1 material to fix) 7: There is a large hole in the wall. (Requires 2 materials to fix) 8: This floor is a mess. A whole person could fit down there (Requires 4 materials to fix) 9: WILD CARD - You find something to fix. What it is, is your choice. (Requires 1 material to fix) 10: One of the vents is open. It's a large vent. Someone could fit through it, unless you fix it. (Requires 2 material to fix)
- If you don't have enough items to finish the last fix - don't worry about it. Really. As long as all your materials are gone, this quest is considered complete!
Course Credits - If you and your team mates complete this quest - meaning everyone has completed their dice rolls and has written at least 400 words - you all receive FIVE course credits. - This is all or nothing - meaning all of you have to meet the criteria to get the credits. If one person doesn't finish this quest/word count, nobody gets it! - Don't forget to link completed quests and earned credits in your journal!

Austin hadn't been able to hide from duty for long before it found him; Corey pointing him off to help patch up some of the damage that had been done by the attack on their washroom, fixing the breaches through which those creatures had come through. As much as he hated this kind of menial labor, in the last month he'd gotten used to it enough to understand its importance: taking his heavy bag of supplies with an equally heavy sigh and trying to see what all he could do with it.
The assignment wasn't solo, at least, for which he was grateful: someone, blurry, in the distance, approaching with their own bag of supplies as he settled in to sort through his own. He squinted behind his plastic frames, trying to figure out who, exactly, was coming to join him.

Austin's slim and a bit taller than average at 5'10' with sandy hair shorn short on the sides, longer and curly on the top. His eyes, behind a pair of thin wire thick plastic frames with the wrong prescription, are faded green and usually amused; his skin is fair, freckling in sun unless he's careful; his mouth is just a little too full, in a way that appeals to most people.
The someone in question was shorter, with broader shoulders and an athletic trim, though hidden beneath the combined layers if tee shirt, jersey, and frayed hoodie. He had sandy blonde hair that was considerably longer than he would have liked, shaggy and pushed back with a headband graciously loaned by one of the girls. He had his hands buried deep in his pockets, head turned as exams what must have been a more recent hole in the shoulder of his sweater.
So Liam didn't notice who his partner for the afternoon was until he had very nearly reached him. Looking up to offer a friendly smile, only for the expression to freeze half formed on his face, pace faltering slightly. Great.
"Uh, hey." He hadn't exactly been avoiding Austin, he hadn't needed to. The taller boy hadn't so much as acknowledged him since the start if this. Liam hadn't known how the respond to that, and so hadn't.

"Oh. You." Austin did recognize him, then: raising an eyebrow as Liam approached and offering a slow, teasing curl of a smile. It was a calculated gesture and one that didn't reflect any truth of what was going on inside his mind, what he was thinking or how he felt.
Liam looked a bit of a mess but in contrast [and obnoxiously] Austin actually looked...pretty good. His hair was mostly clean, half-hidden under a crooked hat that he managed to make look fashionable. His pants were a hair too big, not the carefully tailored trousers he'd favored in high school, but the jacket he was wearing was oddly-supple greenish leather, adorned in zippers and buttons. It looked expensive, and well kept.
Like it had only been found today. Probably because he had.
"Don't get distracted now." There was a drawl behind his voice, cutting through the false matter-of-fact attitude, as he stood and reached out to clap Liam on the shoulder. "We have a task to do."
And he didn't linger. He set to working with an odd amount of enthusiasm, cheerful enough. Showing off a touch as he tore desks to shreds and tossed supplies to one corner with his bag, shooting Liam only brief looks as he worked.

But there they are.
Oh, me. Liam didn't know to respond to that, both relieved and irrationally annoyed that Austin hadn't so much as looked in his general direction up til now. And irritated and irrationally relieved that he seemed to be warning to him again now. Liam suspected maybe the older boy just hadn't recognized him until now, and again, it resulted in conflicting reactions. He supposed there was a certain symmetry to that, given that Liam had always felt fairly conflicted about Austin.
He had the same smile. That infuriating, secretive smile that meant so many things, or nothing at all. Liam had both hated and loved, at alternating times. He wasn't much keen on it now, or so he told himself, as Austin got up and clapped him on the shoulder, already teasing. "Right." Shorter answers had always been better, providing less ammunition. (Or wasting less time.)
Clearing his throat, Liam followed the taller boy's example and got to work. They must have been in one of the old labs. He found an old projector and a bucket in a closet. A bunch of backpacks, and a random box of bells were inane around the desk, and a bottle each of coke and alka-seltzer in a supply cabinet. "How have these things been passed over until now?"

"Oh, I don't know. It's easy enough to ignore things you don't really feel like dealing with." There was a certain heat behind his expression as Austin said it, settling down beside a massive hole in the floor and considering just what they could do about it. There certainly weren't enough supplies to patch it up, to keep anyone from falling through to the floor below -- but, he thought maybe they could at least form some kind of warning.
He grabbed one of the pieces of wood and set to snapping it into smaller pieces, raising his eyebrows at Liam as he did. "Just avoid the area, and you never have to lay eyes on it."
A couple backpacks, as well; he tore them open, using three thin pieces of wood to create stakes and stringing the cloth between. It wouldn't actually stop anything from coming in, but it formed a tidy safety fence around the dangerous area.

Liam frowned. Had that been directed at him, or about him? Or had it had nothing to do with him? He'd never been very good at situations like this. Cryptic, sharp-tongued conversations where every comment had multiple meanings. He never won, and any rare kernels of wit he managed to deliver was subpar at best. He just wasn't equipped for these sorts of exchanges. Not smart enough.
Time hadn't improved things much. Where Austin had continued his education, Liam had taken a year off, aimless and goalless. Soccer scholarships didn't extend into universities. Not in this country.
He didn't say anything for a few minutes, focus seemingly absorbed by a rather large vent in the wall, and trying to rig up a way to seal it off. In the end he'd used a bucket and and the rest of the backpacks, cramming the bucket into place before packing it in with the bags on either side of it. Not pretty, but effective.
"Walking away from an inconvenient situation isn't going to fix it," he finally chimed in, a little belatedly. Not at all sure he should have said anything at all.

Austin had found a hole in the wall, small enough that a human couldn't go through but -- rats could. Rats could get in and get at their supplies. Or maybe a shadow could -- who knew what those could do? So it was a moment before he blinked up at Liam, like he was confused.
"Is there a time delay here? Do you need a hard reset so that it all syncs up again?" He grabbed one of the remaining backpacks and shoved it into the gap.

"No." A quick response this time, carrying just the edge of irritation. Liam had a temper, and who liked being made to feel like an idiot? No one, that's who.
Austin was just as needling as he ever was, with none of the redeeming aspects of their relationship back in high school. Aspects he tried not to think about often, or in detail. Ignoring him was probably the better way to ago about dealing with him, but he'd tried that as well, and it hadn't worked all that good back then, either.
Trying not to grind his teeth, he headed for a hole in the floor that looked as if someone and stepped right through it. It wasn't big enough to need a huge patch job, so instead he grabbed the projector and brought it over to cover it with. Not as fancy a warning as Austin's, but functional nonetheless.

"Then am I just in another time zone or something?" Austin's eyes flashed as he looked back to Liam. he'd found another open vent, but instead of shoving another backpack in there, he carefully stuck some bells in the opening. Sure, something might come in, but at least they'd have a warning sound.

Liam's fingers curled at his sides, a clear indicator of just how annoyed he was. Austin had a way of digging under the skin, and he'd dug under Liam's a long time ago and never been properly removed. "Or something." An awful retort, he knew it.
There was another hole in the floor, and they were running out of materials. He really didn't want to use the other piece of wood, it seemed a little overkill. With a resigned huff he went for the remaining bucket instead, covering the hole with it.

It didn't help, probably, that Austin flat out laughed at him -- leaning against the wall while he watched Liam work. It was probably appreciative, even as overgrown as the other man looked right now. Thoughtful, as well. Considering what Harvard had said to him --
"You try so hard." A thought struck Austin and he blinked, looking up all at once. Of course there was yet another open vent. He threw two more bells in, as a warning system.

his window is very broken. (Requires 2 materials to fix)
Laughter wasn't entirely unexpected, but that didn't mean Liam's shoulders didn't creep up with tension at the sound of it, loose fists tightening before slowly uncurling with Austin's amused comment. He shouldn't have turned to glance at him, should have just kept trying to ignore him, but it he did, and the look on the other man's face was enough to bring color in a warm rush to his face. Half anger, half something else entirely.
He turned away again, scrubbing his palms up over his face and into his hair as she searched the room for repairs that needed to be done. The sooner they were finished, the sooner he could remove himself from Austin's aggravating company.
The broken window provided an excellent momentary distraction. Liam grabbed the remaining piece of wood and the handful of bolts, anchoring the wood into the wall around the break.

WILD CARD - You find something to fix. What it is, is your choice. (Requires 2 materials to fix)
It seemed that Liam had stopped feeding him opportunities to dig in harder -- and so, for the time being, Austin just shook his head and set to work. Thoughtfully, he mulled over the coke and alka seltzer, and decided to use it creatively before Liam got the chance.
There was a rattlingly door out the back of one rooms that would prove a real security breach. He couldn't fix it, but he could trap it: bucket hanging just so, alka seltzer balanced precariously inside the bottle. One good knock on the door, opening it or trying to, would cause an eruption.
It'd be entertaining. And it was certainly creative.

This floor is a mess. A whole person could fit down there (Requires 4 materials to fix)
He was happy for the reprieve, however temporary it might have been. He'd even pause din his own work to watch, curiously, as Austin went about setting up a rather elaborate booby-trap over a door they didn't have the resources to fix.
By the time Austin was finished, Liam had returned to work. There was another giant hole in the floor, this one in the room across the hall. The scruffy blonde stood at the edge of it for a long moment, the bells and remaining bag in hand.
...He didn't have a clue how to fix this. There was a hammer, screw driver, a bit of fishing line and some nails in the supply bags back in the other room, but he didn't see how that was going to help much. They were out of resources.
